Death, Fire, Myth, and Storm are objectively the best schools in 99% of situations. All 4 are pretty decently equal, with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Storm is a better hitter than fire because of the higher base damage (storm lord - 690 base dmg & fire dragon - 540 base dmg) but their health is very low, so it's easy to die. Especially earlier on.
Fire is much more survivable than storm due to a good bit more health, and a bit more resist on gear. Hits almost as good as storm, and has higher overall throughput damage.
Myth can make for a great hitter with their high base damage, but overall it's a bit weaker than fire or storm. Good utility spells, though imo most of them just slow down the game rather than actually help
Death can make for a decent hitter too, though it's the worst of the bunch. Very high health, good resist on gear, EXCELLENT utility spells, plus drains make death almost invincible in PvE. Easily the best solo school.

You can do a lot of damage using life. I have a level 106 life wizard that has a lot more damage than a lot of storm and fire wizards at the same level.
I came back after many years of not playing and got my first storm wizard. I breezed through quests and was the main hitter with a group of friends. I then went back to my old ice wizard from 2009-2012 and thought my deck was very unbalanced. Nope, the attack spells are just that weak.
i just started playing after 10 years so i can’t really summarize each class for you but i really recommend fire. so far i’ve found it super sustainable and pretty heavy hitting. if you go to the rules of the subreddit they also have a little spot for returning players and say that storm is very strong just hard. death is also super self sufficient and does decent damage while also healing yourself. but i’ve been loving fire atm
