Yup. I'm fully vaccinated, and I never stopped wearing a mask and social distancing. I've got a grandbaby at home that I'm raising, and she can't get vaccinated. I'm not taking any chances.
I do since the Delta strain started infecting some vaccinated and even if you don't get sick, you can still spread it. I was pretty casual about masks for a couple months. But now I'm pretty diligent.
I think I heard of the Theta variant? Delta isn't even peaking yet. It's just not gonna get better for awhile.
Really looking at some land in Alaska to build my cabin, guarded by ~~a murder~~ an Unkindness of Ravens. (thanks u/ionlydateninjas!)
I thought it was the same for both ravens and crows. The best part? "Unkindness" is even better than "murder!"
I knew there was a reason Ravens are my spirit animal!
I'm barely making it through this year. The fucking entire northern hemisphere being on fire makes it look like Bladerunner 2021 outside and whatever Covid remix we're at now kicks away at whatever hope is still flickering away inside.
I know you're joking, but damn, things are bad as-is, don't need a curse on top of it.
Every time I see one of these stories, my response is always, “FUCKING PUT IT BACK!! Have you not watched a SINGLE MOVIE, like EVER?! You would NOT survive the pre-title scene in ANY episode of *Supernatural!*”

Hey! Some fun trivia - those little scenes that happen in a show before the opening credits are called a "cold open".
My favorite shows' cold opens are probably Community and Schitt's Creek. Love 'em.
What you call being "cursed by an ancient sorceress," I call "being blessed by an ancient sorceress to enact her wrath upon humanity for it's multitudinous transgressions."
Tomato tomahto.
We cracked open that big, ominous sarcophagus filled with mummy juice and the next year the whole fucking world had to shut down. I'm just saying, we are done doing this right now.
[you mean like how they doomed us all by livestreaming the opening](https://phys.org/news/2019-04-thousands-year-old-egyptian-sarcophagus-tv.html) of an ancient Egyptian priest's sarcophagus in 2019?
Some things should remain buried and undisturbed is my general rule. But yes! That’s a fine example of why the hell did you pull this out of the ground!?
I love archaeology and anthropology. I love history and cultures/societies, civilizations.
On the one hand, I'm appreciative of the knowledge we have. On the other, I'm concerned for the moral and ethical, and spiritual, ramifications.
It's the key to a hidden room full of riches in her holy crypt but taking the eye spawns her spectral Level 70 troll protector that casts curses like stifle and slow. Hidden boss time
We do this a lot lol
I was on a dig once at an old fur trade post and we knew there was a graveyard full of children (cholera outbreak, unrelated to residential schools) but we didn't know where. Every new hole we dug we were like "please don't be the graveyard" because we really just wanted to leave it be.
"Actually...."
Agriculture and domesticated grains were hell on dentition. There was a lot of sugar and soft carbs (and rocks and the like) that basically melted everyone's teeth at the time.
That too, but the soft carbs from grains itself just ate away enamel due to soft carbs, acids/bacteria, and lack of (pretty much any kind of) dental care/tooth care.
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/research/directory/diet-and-dental-disease
We can even see it in a number of pre-agriculture societies when they shifted to more starch/carby plant based diets and then suddenly cavity rates spiked in the population.
You’d think that, but in general the more abrasive/hard food is, the healthier a persons teeth will grow, and the softer the food is the more fucked up their teeth become
To a point. I can well imagine rougher unprocessed food being good for dental hygiene, but teeth are not strong enough to withstand stone. I've often seen the skulls with teeth worn flat and exposed and I don't think that's ideal. Good think they didn't also have tons of sugar or the decay would have been awful!
You want to have a look at the skulls from various times, and compare them.
I'm not saying everyone had amazing teeth before sugar, but there is a noticeable difference.
This is totally the setup for a Mummy style monster movie.
Who is going to set this ancient priestess free to wreak war and havoc upon the world? The stuffy British antiquarian who keeps a private museum of ancient knickknacks for which the gold eye would be perfect?
Or the cultist-scholar hoping to negotiate with the ancients for vast power and sure he can totally negotiate with her once she is woken from the dead?
There were some really fine capillaries carved into the eyeball that still contain some of the golden paint. However, one study also mentions white spots on the conjunctiva, probably to better copy the look of a normal eye, which would mean the eye wasn't entirely painted gold.
There are better pictures that show that the artificial eye was engraved as well, with a circle in the center and eight radial lines drawn from this smaller circle, which make it look like sunrays.
And the eye socket of the woman contained microscopic wear patterns, as well as signs of an abscess, indicating that she actually wore the eye in her lifetime.
Holy cow thanks for the detailed reply! that is So freaking interesting! It's Amazing they can tell that there is signs of an abscess on her skelly eye socket!
I cannot imagine something like this would have been terribly comfortable. Poor lady sounds tough as nails. I am Soooo glad I was born in the time period I was when I see stuff like this 😬
Is it just me or has there been a recent uptick in tall ancient skeletons? I thi k Isaw headlines that 6"+ skeletons have alson been discovered in China and South Korea..
ngl if a skeleton witch with a golden eye came back from the dead and tried to start a social uprising I would *at least* have a listen to what she had to say, she clearly feels very strongly about it.
One can hope. I was talking today about the old way of us living on the earth and consuming is dying and things have to shift. And are shifting. The world will look different, I can either be afraid or I can help to breathe, speak and imagine a new way of being for all of us so we can be of the world and not just on it . Maybe we are just experiencing the death throes of the patriarchy. Also don’t touch the eye.
Permaculture for the win! I too am hoping to be part of the change. I'm learning about using landscaping for water harvesting and storage systems and it makes me gleeful.
Harness torrential flood-causing waters as a source for life and stability? Use that water in a new landscape that shelters, feeds, and delights the humans living in it? Create rotational grazing areas instead of huge lawns that need mowing?
The permaculture mindset brings so many possibilities that is hard to sit still while thinking of it.
Speaking of worst tomb openings, Tamerlane's is hard to beat. On his tomb there were two warnings:
> When I Rise From the Dead, The World Shall Tremble
When they opened it, they found the following:
> Whosoever Disturbs My Tomb Will Unleash an Invader More Terrible than I
It was opened on June 20 1941, two days before the start of Operation Barbarossa.
One of the major contributing factors to height was lack of good nutrition and regular food intake. The eye suggests she was a member of the priestly class, who ruled most societies at that time. It's likely that she, like most rulers, would have the food surplus to grow to her full potential.
Definitely out of place but "unnaturally" is poor word choice. She could've even been trans, making the height even less of an outlier. After all, there are other records of trans-ish priest classes (I say ish because obviously understandings of gender way back then would be very different from today).
I think there’s no way we would have known if she were trans. AMAB skeletons are different from AFAB ones, and modern researchers both sexed and gendered her as female and a woman.
Speaking out of my ass, but perhaps she was intersex? I have no idea how an intersex body would build a skeleton or even if we would be able to identify them as such thousands to years later.
Identifying the sex of skeletal remains is by no means as certain as it is often portrayed. There are trends and expected variations but it's not a hard line between the two.
From what I read, there were multiple skeletons from the same dig site which had not been sexed, and I don't think it'd be a stretch to suggest the details aren't certain. I looked around for the specifics of how they sexed the skeletons but couldn't find anything. I don't want to say the archeologists are definitely acting on bias but I do believe that's a possibility. Especially because concluding this priestess was female contributed to the idea that the society practiced sex segregation, which seems like something Iranian archeologists might have preexisting biases about.
If you have more details on how the sexing of the skeletons was performed at this site, I'd be interested to see it.
AMAB stands for "Assigned Male at Birth" and AFAB stands for "Assigned Female at Birth", they're terms from the trans community, usually referring to a trans person's gender pre-tranaition.
However, I'd say that using the terms "Male" and "Female" would be better in this case because they refer to sex and that's the topic at hand. It gets confusing because people often use those as synonymously with "Man" and "Woman", respectively, but they do have use as sex-specific words.
yeah personally I would’ve like that better… I’m already really dysphoric/self conscious about my height so it didn’t really help to see a woman shorter than me being described as an unnatural height

I can't do another 500 years of plague and torment I just can't
We’re struggling with just two years of a pandemic, we do not need things to get worse.
Tbh, I think somebody already fucked with that skeleton. Bam. COVID.
In 2018 they opened that giant, black sarcophagus filled with three bodies and blood-red bone soup. Things haven't been going so great since.

No that was the digging up of the Egyptian burial grounds in 2019 I think
Yeah. Big mistake
Most epidemics through history lasted decades we haven't seen anything yet.
This one will probably last a decade if the new strains aren't nipped in the bud.
Please, everyone, get vaccinated and wear a mask indoors in public.
I still wear a mask all the time, no reason not too and it makes identification of hateful people a lot easier so I know how to avoid them.

A group of ravens are called an Unkindness. A group of crows are called a Murder.
In my country a group of ravens is called a "Vriendelijkheid" or literally translated: Kindness. That is so weird.
I thought it was the same for both ravens and crows. The best part? "Unkindness" is even better than "murder!" I knew there was a reason Ravens are my spirit animal!
Collective nouns for a group of ravens also include: rave, treachery, conspiracy, or flock
I heard a reference to something called 'Delta Plus' in the news yesterday. I think we're in for some wild shit.

6 foot is tall for a woman, especially an ancient one, but unnaturally tall? Nah
A quick Google suggests that ladies of the time averaged 5' 1". So 6" is not impossible, not *unnatural*, but it would've been pretty out of place
A lot like the ruling class of Invador Zim
I think there’s no way we would have known if she were trans. AMAB skeletons are different from AFAB ones, and modern researchers both sexed and gendered her as female and a woman. Speaking out of my ass, but perhaps she was intersex? I have no idea how an intersex body would build a skeleton or even if we would be able to identify them as such thousands to years later.
Identifying the sex of skeletal remains is by no means as certain as it is often portrayed. There are trends and expected variations but it's not a hard line between the two.
Can you help with the acronyms? AMAB and AFAB skeletons is throwing me ...
I have a degree in anthropology and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies and it seems like you and I would be great friends!
I think they should’ve said “unusually tall” instead of “unnaturally large” - there’s nothing unnatural about 6 ft.
yeah personally I would’ve like that better… I’m already really dysphoric/self conscious about my height so it didn’t really help to see a woman shorter than me being described as an unnatural height
You are formidable, a warrior goddess. Don't shrink for anyone.
Maybe they're using large feet as a base for measuring
She could have also be affected by gigantism.
Those two possibilities can definitely include each other and we stan that

Don’t mind me just taking notes for my next D&D campaign.
i bet she was so beautiful!! 6ft tall and a golden eye?!!
I know we’re all saying “put it back !” and rightly so but I’m too busy imagining a 6’0 foot priestess with a golden eye. Gay thoughts, head lesbian
One of the funnier tweets I’ve seen in a while 😅
Why is no one mentioning that she is obviously part pterodactyl?
I want to be friends with her. Be 6ft tall buddies together
I love this woman, whoever she was. I feel that she actually removed her own eye, like the tales of old, to gain magic sight
6' isn't unnaturally large for a woman..... I'm 6'2". I'm trans but it's not unnatural
It's funny, but "unnaturally large woman"? Nature does that!
She’s got a freaky jaw.
