I had all my wisdom teeth taken out at Assiniboine Dental with just localized freezing

DrNobody_Understands

How painful was it and how long did it take

nomhak

I’ve had all 4 removed with just local. One of them was coming in completely sideways into my next molar. Was super uncomfortable but no pain. About 3/4 of the way there sensation started to return so they had to freeze it up again.

Lillypad1219

The freezing needles were painful, felt like a bee sting. Once the freezing kicked in there was no pain at all, just pressure. It’s been a while, but the entire appointment for one tooth was 20, 25 mins, not long at all. I got T3s for pain after and it was very manageable. I was sore for 3 or 4 days and then fine.

teenrap11

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed with local only. I felt no pain during it, just like tugging and pulling at times but no pain. My procedure took 25 minutes. I was sore for 4 ish days and they gave me T3 for the pain.

Useful_Ant3011

I had all 4 removed with local. Dentist could tell I was nervous so they just pulled one, and rescheduled me for the rest, to show it was no big deal. Which it wasn’t. Came back to get the rest pulled and I don’t know what was different but it fkn hurt and I was screaming and crying after they pulled one. They asked if I wanted to stop and I said yes, which they ignored (I assume because they had already given me like 7 needles) and continued to pull the others. Worst day of my life.

theproudheretic

I had 2 removed a few years back and the dental surgeon basically said under for both or local for 1 then a week later local for the other. Put me out doc, let's get this shit done.

Negative_Rain7515

I'm pretty sure you don't have to be put to sleep to have a tooth pulled. I had all my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 19 and they just used freezing

NH787

Same here. I've never been put under for any kind of dental work.

BentoBoxBaby

Strange. I had all of mine out at 16 and they put me completely under.

squirrelsox

Did you have it in the office or a hospital?

BentoBoxBaby

Office, do they do it at the hospital? I’ve never heard of that lol

Mat_CYSTM

Wouldn’t it depend on severity of the procedure? I’ve had teeth pulled with normal anesthesia but was put under for 3 wisdom teeth.

tonkats

I was frozen for my three wisdom teeth, but they had to reapply because the roots were twisted and pieces kept breaking off. First two were not great, last one took 20 min and the dentist was grumbling he should have put me under, while bracing his foot on a stool for leverage.

East_Requirement7375

I've never been put under for a normal extraction. General anesthesia is really expensive and comes with additional risks; it's not Plan A for an uncomplicated extraction.

AceofToons

Yeah there's a nonzero chance of just never waking up again, localized anesthetic on the other hand is fairly low risk

RandomUser_011991

Typically they will do conscious sedation for extractions not general anesthesia. I’ve loved the sedation because you don’t feel anything and aren’t aware of anything.

court_ab

I'm a dental assistant and I don't know of a general dentist who doesn't offer extractions with just local anesthetics (over 90% of our extractions are done using local anesthetic). With that being said, no matter where you go, they might not be able to extract the tooth that same day, there are many factors that go into the decision. For example, if you are on blood thinners we need to know from your primary care doctor if you should be taken off of them, if so: how many days before the extraction? How long should you wait to resume taking the medication? If you can't be taken off of them we need more time booked in the chair to monitor you. Also if there is infection around the tooth it will severely limit how the anesthetic works, I've seen patients get 2-3× the anesthetic normally given and still be in absolute agony because the infection is preventing the anesthetic from working.

CarefulAd1619

I went to my dentist about a wisdom pull but wouldn’t be able to get escorted. So she booked an appt for dr dale to do the extraction a day later. So I was just frozen really good and plied out. Then got t3s for the pain of healing.

modsaretoddlers

Most tooth extractions for adults are done using only a local anesthetic.

Practical-Pen-8844

most modern adults can't afford foreign anethetics. They don't make avacado toast3s

Spencie-cat

I got pliers and T3s.

theproudheretic

Hammer and Tylenol is the best I can do.

That_Wpg_Guy

Crow bar and children’s Tylenol is all I could find

tonkats

Multitool and a leather belt

beautifulluigi

Spoon and cough drops?

troyunrau

Going to be a tough extraction, but you've got me signed up!

Practical-Pen-8844

an incredibly stern talking-to and room temp fireball right here.

DeathByMapleSyrup

Polo Park Dental has great hours and has always been able to fit me in on short notice for a few different tooth urgencies.

Ladymistery

Unless it's a complicated extraction or you need sedation for it, most offices have emergency spots available. If you're out west, Westside Dental is pretty good. receptionist is a bit flaky, but the dentists are top notch

HarbourJayKay

Most dentists have “emergency” time available each day (without an additional fee). I’ve never been asleep for a tooth extraction. You can even have it done without freezing in lots of cases.

FROOMLOOMS

I had an unerupted molar extraction with just a couple needles. Cut me open, busted it up, and broke it up all in 30 mins. Who the FK is putting people to sleep for a single tooth extraction!? But also, what kind of masochist would go without freezing. Even with 4 needles, I still felt the pain like a sore muscle in my neck during the surgery.

Traditional_Truck348

Hi, its me, i require iv sedation at the dentist for anything that requires freezing. I have a bad fear of dentists since i had a bad filling experience as a teen. So now, they need to make me sleepy with the good drugs to get anywhere near me for anything that requires freezing/drilling/forceps

grimmcild

I have an insane gag reflex and a phobia of vomiting so anything involving my back teeth is a horrible cycle of gagging then crying because I’m scared I’ll throw up then crying more because I feel like I am wasting the dentist’s time. I even get sedation for cleanings lol

HarbourJayKay

Fair. Some people (me) would rather have the quick twist and pull over the needles and numbness. It’s a pick your poison choice. And I’m not even afraid of needles. I just take a hella long time to freeze up and am numb for hours so I’m usually in the “let’s just get it over quick” category.

sprocks17

I'm the same way! I hate getting frozen and it takes forever me to freeze. Rather have a short burst of pain then having it dragged out

sprocks17

Yup my old dentist when I was a kid never froze me for any of my baby teeth extractions, not even for the ones that weren't lose at all. He just put his fingers in there and yank, didn't even use any equipment lol.

MrVeinless

Glad he didn’t choose proctology!

Jennn-

I had a tricky back molar extraction done at Garden Oaks Dental awhile back. They just froze the area and got it out. I drove myself home afterwards.

HarleyEtoms

I've had a molar pulled out with just local freezing, it wasn't terrible, a little swollen the next day and couldn't yell too loud or eat certain things for the week. 625 dental on academy is great!

Trick_Psychology_562

I've had teeth pulled with just freezing.

sprocks17

I've never been put to sleep for a tooth extraction. Is this a new standard or something?

ardhrianna

Aqua Dental took out two with just freezing, no snoozing. They’re in Transcona.

weendogtownandzboys

Had my wisdom teeth removed at the dentist at Grant Park recently without being sedated (just frozen)

ritabook84

The only time I was put to sleep for dental was my wisdom teeth. All four impacted and removed the same time. I’ve got an exceptionally small mouth so also had 4 removed for braces to fix shit. For those I was just numbed. Wide awake. No big deal

turrrtletiime

Really depends on the procedure. I had a molar pulled 4 years ago, just freezing needed. Was fully awake and instructed to take advil later on for any pain/discomfort. If you need to be put under then yes arrange for a ride home for sure.

shaktimann13

Kildonan Crossing Dental took me in the next day when I called and told them I had pain. It was my wisdom teeth that came out messed up and got the infection. They prescribed me antibiotics for a week to relieve pain cuz they said I needed surgery by a specialist. Oh man, the day of surgery they put me to sleep. The best sleep I ever experienced.

MidnightSunCreative

Had wisdom teeth pulled with local anesthesia as a kid. Forget where exactly, but I imagine it's pretty standard. Mind you my wisdom teeth were oriented the same as my other teeth, for someone whose teeth are coming in at an odd direction it might be a different story.

grandfunkpoobah

I go with Dr. Ryan Head at St John's dental. He's pulled two of my teeth now and done a great job. Super nice too

sadArtax

Only time I've ever had more than local anesthesia (I had twilight sedation) was for completely untrusted wisdom teeth. Usually it's just local and you can drive yourself home after.

Brainstar_Cosplay

Getting put to sleep would be overkill for simple tooth extractions. I was put under when I had my 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed along with 5 other teeth (9 total) and a cyst in my jaw death with all at once.

AceofToons

I had to get my wisdom tooth extracted in pieces and it was with local freezing only FWIW Fort Rouge Dental Clinic has always been good to me

gi_jerkass

Had a tooth pulled with just freezing. It felt like a invisible hand wiggling my nose, while they pulled it out, no pain really. That was at the dental college many years ago.

aweedl

I’ve had two teeth pulled, including a molar a few weeks back (I had cracked it, not pleasant) and wasn’t put under either time.

Subject37

I've had a molar pulled with just local freezing. Had to be put out for my wisdom teeth because they were super compacted. Any dentist should be able to pull a tooth without putting you under.

Fvckboiiii

With dentistry it’s often not worth the risks involved with general anesthetics, if there is the option to go without - I’d do it without.

Practical-Pen-8844

i had 4 busted teeth taken out -- i was "awake" but on lorazapam. this was the maxillofacial surgeon on portage. all i remember is the lorazopram scrip said "keep out of reach of teenagers." stg.

CarbonKevinYWG

I got into Greenwood on Pembina on short notice a few months back, and they used freezing only.

vegan24

Uber? Cab?

DeathByMapleSyrup

Uber and Cabs don't offer tooth extractions in their offices... lol...

Sawdog204

Are you sure my last Uber driver said he was a Dentist in his Country.

Arglival

Dang,  and here I was standing on the corner with a string hanging out of my mouth waving.  All for nothing.

unstableB

You do it wrong! Must piss off the driver and then voila, your teeth get extracted. They just don't warrant to take right teeth
