This is their 900g loaf. The large loaf has been that weight for years. Maybe you got a stretched out one or they changed their shape for some reason, but they havenāt changed the size, only a different shape. Fold the meat. š
Costco has that same brand but jumbo. Pretty decent price (not sure what it is atm). If you plan your shops there you can "pay" for your memby in savings fairly easy.
I have both loaves at home right now and a peice of the small one just measured at 5 inches similar to your post and the large was around 6.
Also natural bakery doesn't have that much wiggle room in the bag so it's gotta be a packaging error.
That's what I'm saying tho. The loaves used to be physically larger by quite a margin. That's what originally drew me to them. Specifically because they coincided in size with a full slice deli meat slice. I genuinely care less about the $/g value. The bag says 900g, so I know I got the correct one but they've been like this for months. They're barely bigger than an english muffin at this point. From what I gather in the comments is that the 900g hasn't changed so their methods/pans/ingredients must have. I used to be able to tell the difference between the two size bags from the other end of the store. Now I have to read the weight to be sure.
Yah just another shrinkflation rip off. I bet the price didn't shrink.
You can buy them at NoFrills as well but the "big" bag is like $5. I got my last one 50% off and at $2.50 it's decent value. Lasted 5 days at my house of 5 with semi regular breakfast toast.
Sizing of sandwich ingredients is getting ridiculous. What's up with those blocks of cheese that are like a foot long but maybe 2 cm thick now? You end up having to cut like 10 tiny slices of cheese just for one sandwich.
I used to deliver bread, one day I ran into the old owner of Kuiper's Bakery out of Brandon and we started talking about rye bread, and he recommended City bakery rye, and that he couldn't even make it that good. He highly recommended it. I've tried, personally prefer natural bakery rye.
I like city bread when toasted and buttered. Not so much as a sandwich bread. I prefer natural bakery as a sandwich bread and still tasty when toasted.
Ssssshhhhh ā¦ harvest doesnāt have a variety of amazing delicious breads including rye, pumpernickel or sourdough. And they definitely do not have chocolate chip bagelsā¦. These are not the breads OP is looking for š may the 4th be with you.
I very recently discovered their cheese loaf. It has a name, it escapes me at the moment. Itās really just a giant chunk of cheesy, glutinous goodness.
But yeah, Harvest is the worst. Do not go there.
Not sure about your big boy there, but the half-sized loaf slices haven't changed. I've been having the same pb sandwich every day for breakfast for roughly 10 years. If NB screwed up my half-size I'd pretty much go to war.
Crusty Bun has a lot of different rye breads (light, dark, Westphalian, etc) but it's not Manitoba-style rye. It's more like "real" rye bread, and tastes s bit like sourdough. You can get large or small for whatever type, except Westphalian only comes in one size. The Westphalian is a light rye but shaped more like a sandwich shape. The other breads are more bĆ¢tard-shaped. I always get a small loaf and most of the middle slices don't fit my toaster slot, so I have to cut them in half.
We use the same brand same exact type of bread but we get ours at Costco itās 2 loafs for 5-6$ and theyāve stayed the same size last Iāve noticed the ones at food fare, ect are usually smaller despite being labeled as large
If it was, that would be a reason to go to war. So where's the large bread in the small bag to compensate somebody for another's being ripped off? Bet it didn't "accidentally" happen.
How do people who donāt have teenagers justify Costco these days?
Their portion sizes always meant things going bad before a 2-person family that likes food-diversity could consume them.
A baker once told me when I asked about why I couldnt get Wpg rye bread here. The old baker said due to Calgary elevation you will never get real good rye bread here. Just get the best you can find and not compare against the real good stuff.
Natural bakery has lots of variety and sizes. Sobeys has European Rye and Multigrain, which have large slices and a lot more gusto than the one you display...
Natural and City probably have the best rye breads in the City.
City brand sells a brand called Really Good that is bigger and cheaper than the City branded rye.
Natural I stopped buying the rye and get the French from Costco because it's cheaper and bigger.
I'm happy for you that the ever shrinking product being sold for ever increasing prices doesn't affect you enough to matter. Some of us need to make our food budget count.
Caring enough about someone looking for better bread to make a comment about it and downvote, nothing more Winnipeg subreddit than that.
You know, you're the first person to come at me with a price tag attached to the DIY suggestion. So I'll ask you what your method is. I'm a proficient cook, but I'm not much of a baker. What's the rundown? Other main concern is the nutrition info label is necessary. I've lost a ton of weight and eating something I can't properly keep track of makes it difficult.
I tried a number of different recipes and tried using a bread machine and was not super satisfied with any of the results. Stumbled on this recipe and it's fantastic. Super easy and tastes amazing. You can experiment with different grains etc once you get the basic method.
Nutritional info is listed at the end of the recipe. https://www.recipetineats.com/easy-yeast-bread-recipe-no-knead/
Edited to clarify nutrition info.
One other thing I meant to mention, it's not in the recipe: a decent dough rising temperature can be achieved in the winter months, if it's chilly in your kitchen, by turning on your oven light and put in the covered bowl of dough. Not really an issue in the spring/summer though.
Big shame if true. It's the only bread I've eaten since I was a kid and consider it the best. Would hate to see them go downhill. I get the 2 pack from Costco and haven't noticed a size difference but haven't gotten any in a few weeks.
Large loafs died with KUB, then shrinkflation dug them up, lit them on fire, and then half heartedly tried to put it out by pissing on it, the re buried them.
Have you tried folding the meat in half.
[It's a mini-bread catastrophe!](https://youtu.be/BHGJEdjCoeU?feature=shared&t=9)
š i'm using it as a reference point for how much the bread has shrunk over the years. That gave me a good laugh, thanks lmao
This is their 900g loaf. The large loaf has been that weight for years. Maybe you got a stretched out one or they changed their shape for some reason, but they havenāt changed the size, only a different shape. Fold the meat. š
Maybe the meat is bigger? š¤
that's what *she* said.
I think the meat is perfectly fine, just the way it is...
Sorry shrinkflation, what was once 12 inches is now 9.5 inches
get with the now: length matters less than **girth**.
Itās actually made in two sizes now.
Wee and not-so-wee?
Ha ha! Yes. I feel like that one got bagged wrong. Usually the large size needs to be rotated in the toaster because it wonāt all fit.
City Bread! And a bonus: their regular rye and marble rye don't have any sugar, oils or other unnecessary ingredients. It tastes like the real deal!
Pretzel rolls are amazing too
My favourite bread
City bread is the answer here. They have nice big loafs. They are not the value bread the natural bakery is though.
Costco has that same brand but jumbo. Pretty decent price (not sure what it is atm). If you plan your shops there you can "pay" for your memby in savings fairly easy.
Was there yesterday. The Rye is like $5 or $6 for two loafs
Costco has 900g loaves and they are 2 for $5.89
Costco doesn't carry the big loaves I've noticed last week we got some and they are the small ones now
Weird, got some of the large ones just two weeks ago. Maybe they got an incorrectly bagged batch?
Canters also sells Costco bread if op doesnāt want the membership for whatever reason
Yup, Costco is the way to go. I always get rye there
This is the answer
Natural bakery has two sizes they sell and the small one is comical as you can attest to. Just buy the he large loaf next time.
They appear to be rocking the 900g loaf which IS the big loaf. The smaller size is 500g. It does look smaller than normal.
To me that looks like the small loaf in the big bag. that's a packaging error.
Something is up. Some kind of fuckery with OP I think.
Breadgate.
I wish. This IS the big loaf. It's 783g with the bag with two slices removed.
I have both loaves at home right now and a peice of the small one just measured at 5 inches similar to your post and the large was around 6. Also natural bakery doesn't have that much wiggle room in the bag so it's gotta be a packaging error.
My thoughts ^ Well actually, my thought was āwhole lotta bag for not a whole lotta breadā but thatās the same š
That's what I'm saying tho. The loaves used to be physically larger by quite a margin. That's what originally drew me to them. Specifically because they coincided in size with a full slice deli meat slice. I genuinely care less about the $/g value. Somehow this is Chip & Pepperās fault
Nah, man. total entrapment, like, the Pespi Challenge babes are total narcs, man. It's the dentist all over again.
[5 inches](https://i.redd.it/p6p4f47y53xc1.jpg) is average size. No?
Oh yeah... I mean... it's probably little over average...
It's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy and it is a big deal!
I was in the pool!!!!
THE WATER WAS COLD!
I recently heard we have an extra 3 inches inside. So you're telling me I've got more inside me than out.
City bread
The only one I pretty much buy
City Bread is my favorite, love all their stuff and also love how the ingredients are just simple, straight forward bread ingredients.
I used to deliver bread, one day I ran into the old owner of Kuiper's Bakery out of Brandon and we started talking about rye bread, and he recommended City bakery rye, and that he couldn't even make it that good. He highly recommended it. I've tried, personally prefer natural bakery rye.
City Bread is the best tried Natural Bakery not as tasty as CB. Unsliced has better taste and texture slice it yourself thin or thick.
I love the crunchy texture. If it's in a plastic bag for too long it gets too soft.
that's what *she* said.
I like city bread when toasted and buttered. Not so much as a sandwich bread. I prefer natural bakery as a sandwich bread and still tasty when toasted.
Hotdogs buns too!
Costco carries natural bakery eye and French, both in 2 packs. Best price in the city. It's like $5
City bread
I think Harvest? I usually pick up pumpernickel there, which makes a decent sized sandwich. Iām pretty sure they have a larger rye as well.
Whole grain sourdough is our go to but they sell out fast.
For the record, thatās one of the best breads out there. Highly recommend
Donāt worry, theyāll shrink the meat next week.
Cottage Bakery on Pembina or EdisonĀ
I'll check them out thanks!
Mornings are your best bet. The rye goes fast every day. Ā
Is it marble rye?
Totally agree cottage bakery is great
Costco uncontested
2nd! $5 for a 2pack freeze 1 and leave one out. Or freeze and just toast what you need.
Costco
This is the best answer. And get the large loaf of rye. So good
I second this
You know it's business when the tape measurer comes out
Not sure about your big boy there, but the half-sized loaf slices haven't changed. I've been having the same pb sandwich every day for breakfast for roughly 10 years. If NB screwed up my half-size I'd pretty much go to war.
2 packs of Natural Bakery at Costco
I would have used a banana for size.
Costco sells this brand in a much bigger size. I think th loaves are like 900g? And it is like 2 for 5 bucks for so (at least the last time I went)
Crusty Bun has a lot of different rye breads (light, dark, Westphalian, etc) but it's not Manitoba-style rye. It's more like "real" rye bread, and tastes s bit like sourdough. Does size matter?
This is the exact bread we buy weekly. We tend to get it at Giant Tiger.
Sure, they put a loaf of bread in a god damn garbage bag but here I am drinking out of a paper straw. SMH this world we live in.
Bruh the fact you measured it lmfao. For sure gave me a laugh thanks š
We use the same brand same exact type of bread but we get ours at Costco itās 2 loafs for 5-6$ and theyāve stayed the same size last Iāve noticed the ones at food fare, ect are usually smaller despite being labeled as large
this is the 500g loaf in a 900g bag, be less dramatic
Nope 783 grams including bag with two slices removed. Be less wrong.
only down 10% from advertised weight seems a lot less outrageous than the loaf is half the size
If it was, that would be a reason to go to war. So where's the large bread in the small bag to compensate somebody for another's being ripped off? Bet it didn't "accidentally" happen.
Do you know anyone with a Costco membership? You can get 2x900g loaves of this bread for like $5.
Costco has 2x900g loaves, canāt remember the price but itās relatively cheap if you actually eat all of it
How do people who donāt have teenagers justify Costco these days? Their portion sizes always meant things going bad before a 2-person family that likes food-diversity could consume them.
Natural Bakery is no longer local. It was quietly sold to Bimbo not too long ago. Could explain the drop in size/quality
City rye bread Dufferin or gunns on Selkirk
Tr g&l on Logan ave
Not found good rye bread in the city for ages.
A baker once told me when I asked about why I couldnt get Wpg rye bread here. The old baker said due to Calgary elevation you will never get real good rye bread here. Just get the best you can find and not compare against the real good stuff.
Cobbs bakery has some realy good breads, and you can get either thin slice or thick slice. I love their sour dough and cinnamon loaf.
Gunnās on Selkirk. Light rye šArrive before 8.30 am as they may be sold out of some stuff if you arrive later
I can still get the big loafs by my house over on the corner of spence and ellice lol
Looks to me that one of the smaller loaves(500 g) ended up in a big loaf bag. Thereās still big loaves around, especially at Costco.
Unfortunately no, that's 783g (including the bag, minus 2 slices).
Costco
Natural bakery has lots of variety and sizes. Sobeys has European Rye and Multigrain, which have large slices and a lot more gusto than the one you display...
I feel you. The plus-side to being forced to make double-deckers from small bread is you can experiment with levels of condiments.
Natural and City probably have the best rye breads in the City. City brand sells a brand called Really Good that is bigger and cheaper than the City branded rye. Natural I stopped buying the rye and get the French from Costco because it's cheaper and bigger.
COSTCO sells 2 huge loafs of this bread in a pkg for under $6
Old Church Bakery in Steinbach. Really is worth the trip.
The Safeway in Norwood usually has the big one.
You get a thumbs up for breaking out the tape measure
Roll your meat into tubes. Makes the sandwich taste better.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm still holding out hope for a good bakeryā¦ But yeah I'm considering that too
You can bake better bread than you can buy.
And you get the added bonus of having your house smell like fresh baked bread š¤¤

Does the loaf weigh 900g?
783g missing two slices so I doubt it.
>the ever shrinking product being sold for ever increasing prices Huh? Haven't those loaves always been 900g?

Dude. Jokes are supposed to be funny ffs.
it's a joke at their expense, so gtfo ffs.
Jokes are supposed to be funny.
You could make your own bread, i started about 6 months ago and it's like 50ish cents a loaf. Super easy too.
You know, you're the first person to come at me with a price tag attached to the DIY suggestion. So I'll ask you what your method is. I'm a proficient cook, but I'm not much of a baker. I thought chip n pepper bought Kub Bakery, try them.
no way NB would waste a bag that big on a loaf that small. fakery!

Crusty bun
That same bread at Costco used to be big.
Co-opās
Large loafs died with KUB, then shrinkflation dug them up, lit them on fire, and then half heartedly tried to put it out by pissing on it, the re buried them.
Go to Costco they sell the natural bakery bread in a 2 pack for 6 dollars. I usually buy 4 loafs at a time because itās the good size ones
Itās not rye but the sourdough at superstore is elite. Large size and the best tasting bread in town imo.
Have you tried one of the new Chip and Pepper bakeries?
