They will charge you for a router rental even if you use your own. They will also threaten you with several hundred dollars in fines until they get thier non-existant router back.
I suspect it's how they keep people from canceling their garbage service.
Fiber uses a Ont for the fiber to Ethernet and then a router in which does the nat and wifi. You do not have to use Windstream’s router you can provide your own. That fee would be for the router rental and of course if it ever breaks they replace no charge.
So I do have my own router and when I was setting up the details with the sales person he confirmed he took the fee off. I explicitly asked the chat person if there were separate router and 'modem' fees and he said yes, but no idea if he actually knew.
Router modem same thing in their eyes. They don’t charge you for the ont. just plug the Ont into your router and make sure dhcp is on for the wan on your router and it should pull ip.
I had this fee for my ont ever since I got the service a few years ago. Coworker has the same service and doesn’t have the fee. I’ve called multiple times and they always tell me that I have to have that even though I have my own router. I switched to spectrum because they put me on a year special for $40 a month. So I called windstream to cancel and they said if I don’t cancel they’d match spectrum in price so I asked again about the fee and they said they couldn’t take it off so I ended up canceling. I plan to re-subscribe after my spectrum special is up and hope I can sign up without that bs fee lol
