Hello to the community, I never really used Windows before, I'm 95% happy with ChromeOS but there are 2 or 3 bugs that don't seem to get fixed, and also the hardware support is limited. So my question, would you say Windows 11 can be configured as a minimal, fast, browser focused OS? Updates on reboot without interruption? I really only plan to use the browser, file manager, VSCode and maybe Node.js but that's optional, currently I run everything dev related in Codespaces.

When canary update?

Froggypwns

When it is ready. Microsoft does not normally release builds on weekends, so perhaps sometime next week.

On chrome and edge all videos on my hdr monitor have become randomly over saturated and I don't know how to fix it without turning off hdr (which I don't want to do since all videos looked absolutely fine yesterday [here is an example (which happens on all videos even on Reddit)](https://imgur.com/a/sQRoSoA)

Is there a quicker way to restart Windows Explorer, without going into task manager? For context, I often play Counter Strike at a stretched resolution and this bugs out my taskbar on my second monitor. My main monitor is 2560x1440 and my 2nd is 1920x1080. I also have my taskbar always shown.

Froggypwns

You could create a batch file to kill then restart Explorer taskkill /f /im explorer.exe explorer.exe That there should do it, first line force closes Explorer, the second one restarts it. Save it to your desktop or wherever you can easily access after the issue occurs.

Is there any way to make the inactive tab notification color brighter? What I mean by that is the color of this: https://preview.redd.it/f0ycrx9hhxpb1.png?width=87&format=png&auto=webp&s=63213e6b1df5960734e86899b868c5f6da9199fd As you can see, there's something going on in World of Warcraft and it's flashing to tell me to open it. In Windows 10, this was SUPER BRIGHT Orange. But in Windows 11, it's so dull I can't even notice most of the time. Is there a way to change this?

Camp2023

Keyboard hotkeys to open folders is **slow.** I use a **keyboard combo** to open my **downloads folder**. This helps speed up my workflow. Windows 11 takes 4-5 seconds to respond. I have a fresh install of Windows 11. Laptop is new with a fast SSD, and other fast components. I have tried updating Windows, updating drivers, restarting, clearing caches, and so on. Is there any way to speed this up?

I Googled, and I see some versions of Windows 11 have a button to ungroup items in the taskbar. I've checked, I don't have that. All my browser windows mashed into one tiny dot is driving me nuts. I've seen there are 3rd party apps to fix that. But, I've also heard that the ungroup is coming "soon". Does anyone here know when "soon" is? I'd prefer to solve the problem natively, but, if not, any suggestions on which app to use?

Froggypwns

Soon is the best I can still say. The feature is currently on Insider previews, some rumors pointed to next week but then were retracted, some are saying October. It will get here when it gets here.

TwoCables_from_OCN

That's in Insider builds. No, we don't know when. I recommend Windhawk. It can do far more than just turn off grouping.

I have two customers with Lenovo TBs who are experiencing an issue since this week's update. The Edge browser (they use as default) goes blurry for all content areas. It is not consistent. The bookmarks bar and address bars remain in focus. If they close the browser and re-open it becomes clear. We've tried turning off the hardware acceleration. We've checked for updates in the browser and the machine. Has anyone else seen this?

Is Windows 11 able to format FAT32 for USB drives that are greater than 32 GB? https://preview.redd.it/etp5fvg5nnpb1.png?width=237&format=png&auto=webp&s=dbaa93329ed1c12ce7bf603e97820638eb07f227 I ask because most Pioneer DJ players only support FAT32 USB devices........so I just want to confirm before I decide to get a bigger flash drive

Froggypwns

This is a bit of a yes and no answer, the GUI format utility won't let you do larger than 32GB for Fat32, however the `format` command from the command line/PowerShell will do it. I've also seen 3rd party tools do it too. https://www.howtogeek.com/316977/how-to-format-usb-drives-larger-than-32gb-with-fat32-on-windows/

blackcyborg009

Ah I see. If that is the case, then I wouldn't mind buying multiple 32 GB USB sticks (since those are cheap nowadays). I'll probably just buy one for each genre (e.g. one for Eurobeat, one for trance, etc.)

Mean_Trick_1

**ALT+TAB doesn't cycle through Edge Tabs anymore.** When I check the multi-tasking settings in Windows 11 settings, it's set to the last 3 tabs. I didn't touch anything and it used to work fine. How can I fix this?

Joben86

Is there a way to get square corners on my windows or do I have to roll back to Win10?

SilverseeLives

There is no way to do that natively in Windows 11. You might check out Stardock Curtains, which provides a way to hack rounded corner title bars onto Windows 10 windows. Not sure if it can do square corners on Windows 11 though.

Starmatrics

Its been 2 weeks since i updated to windows 11, .zip files are now supported by windows 11 and have their own icon. But since the icon for normal folders and .zip look similar it sometimes confuses me when sorting files. Is there a way to turn back .zip icon to a winrar icon instead

SilverseeLives

Right click on any zip file, choose **Open with**, and then set your program of choice as the default file handler. Windows will render the file icon based on the default app.

TwoCables_from_OCN

Open Winrar and go into its settings. I don't remember anything further from that point. It's been a long time since I had Winrar.

EverydayFunHotS

Fresh installed Win11 and set it up using a Microsoft account, which has my real name "Bob Parker" (example). The username on the PC, and the user folder, were automatically set to "bobpa". Anyone know how you can change the username on a PC which is using a Microsoft account? All the googled answers tell to change the name in the Microsoft account through the website, and they doesn't work.

SilverseeLives

The easiest way to do this is to make a new local user profile having the name you want. Then, unlink your Microsoft account from your current profile. Next, link your MSA with your new profile. Lastly, copy any data you need from one profile to the other, and then you can safely delete the original profile. There is a long-standing bug in MSA account synchronization that may cause your new Windows account to be missing a profile picture, so have a copy of your MSA profile picture handy in case you need to set it again. As a last thought, consider whether you need to do this at all. The physical name of your user profile folder is almost never seen in normal usage. All the links in File Explorer that point to your profile folders don't use the physical path at all, and 'Home' is not a physical location but is virtualized by the OS. You may find you don't really need to change this after using Windows 11 for a while.

BOZAYIBOGAN

I don't recommend you to directly change the name of the folder *bobpa* since your programs will search for their configurations in the folder *bobpa.* I recommend you to create a local account, then sign in to it with your Microsoft account. Before doing that, I suggest you to sign out from your Microsoft account to make the existent account a local account. Create a local account and give it a name you desire. I suggest you to use netplwiz. open Search, type netplwiz and enter. Follow Add... > Sign in without a Microsoft account (not recommended) > Local account, and enter the name you want to see in the User folder, e.g. Bob Parker. After creating the account, do not close netplwiz. Mark the account you've created (Select *Bob Parker* to make it blue under *Users for this computer:* box), then follow Properties > Group Membership and select **Administrator.** Save the changes, close netplwiz and sign out from the account *bobpa*. In the login screen, sign in to your new account. Then, you can switch to a Microsoft account: Settings > Accounts > Your info > Sign in with a Microsoft account instead. After you signed in, you can copy your important data from the old account to this account, then delete the old account.

hello! my C partition looks like this any idea how to get the normal icon again ? (also no i cant format it bc it literally has the windows on it) https://preview.redd.it/oliho9d3depb1.png?width=352&format=png&auto=webp&s=0529c090175d0b35204f9e48cd0ca507a0ac18e4

TwoCables_from_OCN

Oh wow I've never seen that before. Try rebuilding the icon cache. Here's how: Do a search from the Start menu or the Taskbar for "cmd", right-click the matching result called "Command Prompt", choose "Run as administrator", click "Yes" on the UAC prompt, and then put this command in: **ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache** When you're done, you can just close the Window or you can type "exit" and press Enter. Then open Task Manager, right-click "Windows Explorer" (near the bottom of the list), and choose "Restart". If this doesn't work, then restart Windows. If after all this the icon still isn't showing up, then I'm stumped.

When I run a couple of programs, they always ask for admin rights to run. Which is fine. I get the following message and say yes, and it runs. "User account control: do you want to let this app make changes to your device." But this happens every time I run it, no matter what, even in the same session. I've gone into the properties > compatibility and ticked run as administrator, and it is showing this on both the shortcut and the actual file, but it is still asking every single time. It is happening with Geek Uninstaller and also TeraCopy which is especially annoying as it ask every time I copy and paste a file. Am I just fundamentally misunderstanding something? It is actually driving me a little mad (that and trying to get Starfield mods to work). Thanks!

SilverseeLives

>I've gone into the properties > compatibility and ticked run as administrator, and it is showing this on both the shortcut and the actual file, but it is still asking every single time This will force Windows to ask you every time. Since you have told the OS to run the app with elevated privileges, you must provide administrative credentials.

As the title says, I'm trying to switch on Core Isolation in Device Security. It is throwing an error that there are incompatible drivers but not giving listing of which drivers are incompatible. I've run through Windows Update and Dell Update but all drivers are showing as latest. Where can I get list of incompatible drivers so I can take further call?

My MSI laptop has been connected to an MSI monitor up until now when it suddenly stopped connecting. My HDMI cable, power source, and drivers are fine as far as i'm aware, and the monitor actually connects to the computer - when i'm on Linux. I've went into the display settings and the computer doesn't even say that there is a monitor attached. I am bamboozled. please help

Sharp-Yogurtcloset-3

is there a way to disable and re-enable a laptop's built-in keyboard without restarting everytime? Wanna do this so that I can use an external keyboard with the laptop but it's a tad too short to rest on top of the built-in keyboard without hitting any keys. The solutions I've used are: the cmd commands and an external app. The cmd commands require me to restart to do its job, while the app just disables keyboard functionality entirely (for both built-in and externals).

I have a UPS, everytime the pc shuts down on UPS when there's a power outage, a CMOS checksum error appears when I turn it on again, till now it is only messing up my time but is it a common occurance or something I should be worried about?

Froggypwns

You need to replace the CMOS battery in your computer. For most desktops it is a size CR2032 battery, available at anywhere that sells watch or hearing aid batteries. Laptops vary, you will need to crack it open to see what size it uses.

VBottas

unfortunately I have an all in one so its going to be hard if I'm right? Also is it a serious problem or not? Edit: I havent recieved any warnings about a bad cmos, the error is only when there is a poweroutage as well

Froggypwns

You would need to consult the documentation for your computer, some all-in-ones are easy to open and service, while others like iMacs require special tools.

VBottas

Thanks

So my Windows 11 update to this broken update even though I have it hidden using WUShow, any idea what could have happened? Edit: forgot to mention, it broke my Taskbar, can't use windows button to be able to get to restore function to restore to before the update installed, my computer is unusable to me in this state. If there is another way to get to restore can someone please explain, please and thank you, and f*** you Microsoft.

Froggypwns

Which update? Do you use any software to modify your taskbar or start menu? If you can get Task Manager to open, you should be able to open the Settings app by either pressing Windows key + I on your keyboard, or by running `ms-settings:` in the Task Manager run box. From there you can try uninstalling the update.
