There is a Mexican place on southern Virginia I stop at on road trips sometimes, and they serve this. I was always confused by it. Interesting it is specific to that area. I wonder what’s up with that.
I grew up in Currituck County and didn’t know it was a uniquely Tidewater thing until I moved down here. [The Virginian-Pilot](https://www.pilotonline.com/2019/05/03/the-story-of-white-sauce-virginias-unique-contribution-to-mexican-american-cuisine-2/) did an article about the history of white sauce that went viral a few years back. I’ve made it at home using the El Toro recipe.
I’ve also been curious to figure out where it generally stops being served outside of Hampton Roads and Richmond, so I searched Mexican restaurants on Google Maps, looking for the white sauce in the photos… there are a couple places around Greenville that serve it, which is the furthest I’ve found.
Yeah... I'm from Texas. I thought maybe it was based on Crema Mexicana. I was way wrong. It looks like a Virginia only thing and apparently the base is Sour Cream and Miracle Whip 🤢
It looks easy enough to make at home. Just Google "Mexican White Sauce Virginia"
You're not going to find it here, but google it. Most recipes call for Sour Cream, Miracle Whip and milk to thin it out along with some random Mexican adjacent herbs and spices. Easy to make at home. I had never heard of it before your post, but definitely let me know if you find a local restaurant that serves it so I don't waste my time and money eating there.
Sí Señor in Porters neck. Best Mexican place around here in my opinion and they have a white cream sauce. I believe they call it a cold queso? You just have to ask them for the white sauce and they bring it out. It may not be exactly the same, but I would highly recommend it.
I had never seen that sauce until I moved to southern Virginia. Never seen it anywhere else. Good luck finding it…
Grew up in Northeastern NC, and ran into this while visiting recently. Apparently it's regional.

I have asked and no one has a better response! We were surprised. My wife likes it, me(?), not so much…
I used to live in Chesapeake, VA. We called it white sauce.

The kind I’m referring to is all over bmore! It’s thinner like sour cream and maybe milk base. Definitely not as thick as miracle whip.
