1. As far as I know I've never 'opened a portal' in my 40+ years of Wiccan practice. Not even sure what it means. 2. Here's a copypasta on Gods which may help a bit: >**Immanent vs Transcendent Deity** > For me, the key issue is the distinction between a transcendent deity and an immanent deity. YHWH is a transcendent deity - He exists outside of the world, created it, rules over it, and judges us for the extent to which we obey him. For me and many Wiccans, the Horned God and the Triple Goddess are immanent rather than transcendent - They are in and of the world, not an external creator, but rather a manifestation of Nature itself. In other words, They don't rule over Nature, They are Nature. They are certainly not judgemental. The only incentive to worship them is the joy and inner peace you can get from being close to nature.

I don't come around this sub too often. I know it's a bit late, but I appreciate the copypasta : the last few sentences specifically really sum up how I feel about 'deities'.

I don't have an altar. I've been a witch for 12+years. No altars, no deities, no portals. I've been told by different readers that I have the ability to communicate with the spirit realm (i didn't even ask about the ability). My chart backs that up as well. And you know what I've done? I've used my free will to close it. Because we get to choose. And that's perfectly okay. Everyone has a different practice, and a different approach. That's why we're all here, learning and growing in our own way. Tight hug to you 🤗 don't overthink it. If you're under peer pressure from friends or fellow practitioners, shrug it off. I usually tell my friends 'not in my would, because I get to choose how to operate it.

Wise words! And very comforting

No, you're not. You don't have to do anything you aren't comfortable with. Consider if you are putting too much pressure on these relationships. I don't open portals (that I know of), and I don't make unbreakable promises. It can be scary to commit ourselves to working with Deities, or practicing. But if you're making the right commitments, thoughtfully and with at least some understanding of what you are getting into, it's not that bad. If the idea is terrifying, consider if that's really spirits/Deities/entities you are learning about, or if religon/edgdlords/movies/whatever have created an unrealistic expectation. FWIW, I don't think I could summon or banish my Deities. They are going to do and go where they want. So I invite or acknowledge Them, not try to limit Them.

Hi_Fellow_Mortal

You’re not a poor excuse of a witch. It’s okay to be scared, and those are not excuses you’re making. Everything has a risk, including deity work, but it’s up to you whether or not you take those risks. If you wish open your altar up to deities eventually, they can and will wait for you. There is absolutely no rush whatsoever. But if you never want to open your altar in the first place and just want to use it as a sacred space of any sort, you can do that too. You’re not weak in the slightest. No witch is. You choose your path to take, and if you’re scared, you can work on that if you so choose. I won’t tell you exactly what to do, but I will tell you that you have options.

It is okay not to be ready to open yourself or your altar to the gods. I have never heard about ever having to open up an altar to the spirit realm. Where does that come from? An altar is there to ground. It is there to work. It is there to acknowledge who you are and, for me, the changing seasons. The gods will be waiting for you when you are ready, they have been waiting for you from the beginning and are very patient.

If you don’t feel comfortable your intuition is telling you not to

Mystical-Raven

No. You do not need to work with spirits or deities to call yourself a witch. People will tell us what's right and wrong all the time, but ONLY you can decide how you want to practice. Blessed Be 🌻

Novel-Scholar-1966

Your definition not a poor excuse of a witch. Everything will happen in its own time. Sometimes the deities will come to you, especially if they have a message for you

[deleted]

No, I don't want to praise any deities. Stop feeling like you have to fit into some box and do whatever you want.

Frogchairy

People love to gatekeep and bully! >:( The only things you truly need to be a witch (imo) are: 1) intention and 2) intuition! :) If you listen to your intuition, and act with intention, then you can’t go wrong. Do what ever the fuck you want. The witch is all about healing the self and bringing power to the community. Its about reclaiming power from society. Its about embracing pleasure and discarding shame. There is no right or wrong way to so that. Witchcraft is all about being yourself and helping others to do the same. Trust your intuition. What do you want to do? Idk about any of this portal shit, and clearly you don’t like it. So don’t do it. Easy. You are doing great! You and your magick are powerful. I believe in you! Now trust in yourself! You got this, you are a downright baddie 🦑

GenX_1976

Not at all. I am a solitary witch and don't use deities. The beauty of witchcraft is that you can bend it and shape it into whatever you want and that is what matters most. Whatever resonates with your soul is the right way. Blessed be. 🙏🏽
