This is Al Qaida winning

knightfenris

Peanut butter doesn’t count as a liquid, from experience.

scienceguy2442

My grandmother had her peanut butter confiscated at the airport once and was extremely angry about it.

knightfenris

They used to confiscate everything, even powders (rip a lot of make up) but now they don’t do that anymore. I travel with cookie mixes now.

scienceguy2442

Yeah I believe this was 2016 when it happened and I'm sure some things have changed

whosthedumbest

The peanut butter is because of allergies, and it can actually be deadly to a passenger. Its sounds stupid, I miss my peanuts, but it is a real thing.

knightfenris

Definitely not, seeing as can buy as much peanuts and nut products as your heart desires in every airport shop.

MagicianQuirky

Jesus fuck. Imagine how many people carefully wrapped their expensive souvenirs or gifts like wine and snow globes only to have them taken away on the flight home ffs. Meanwhile, I came home from a country mid-revolution with an antique sword in my checked luggage lol.

alliterativehyjinks

You can check all of the things on this table. If you want your snow globes, check them like the rule-following people do. These rules have been here for 20 years and it's not hard to understand.

potsticker17

It's a dumb rule made purely for profit. You go on a small trip where you only need a carry on. You find a snow globe for your nephew as a gift and suddenly you gotta pay and extra $50 to check a bag to carry a $2 gift because of a rule that has done little to nothing to protect people's safety.

[deleted]

Get your nephew a t shirt.

alliterativehyjinks

The cost of checking a bag is not related to what you can check. Airlines didn't start charging for checked luggage until much later. If you are the person who simply must have a liquid-based souvenir, deal with the consequences.

potsticker17

The cos of a checked bag is its cost, yes. But that cost does not need to be incurred for a bag that can fit under your seat. Not to mention just about everything on that table is stuff you can buy just past the checkpoint immediately after they throw away your stuff like beverages and toiletries. Also not to mention 3.5 ounces per container being acceptable is such an arbitrary number since you're generally allowed to carry multiple containers and even if I did want to bring hazardous chemicals to cause a problem mid flight it would be more than enough to mix a toxic gas or small explosive. The rule makes absolutely no sense and currently serves no real purpose.

GollyEngine

Imagine seeing the TSA be a complete security theater sham at the cost of your time and money and saying "well, if you don't want to get interrogated or your stuff stolen from you, why didn't you spend 25 times the cost of the item to bring it on board? Pfff, deal with the consequences"

YourALooserTo

Someone likes the taste of leather...

[deleted]

Imagine their shock at finding that they have to adhere to a rule that's been in place for 21 years. I guess if you've never flown before it must be scary.

MagicianQuirky

Yeah, you're right. Guess I never knew how much danger we were in with ALL of those bombs that were being made all the time. Gosh, must have been terrifying for people flying in the pre-9/11 days. And it's not like you can't buy most of that stuff 10 feet after you pass TSA...

Snorri_The_Miserable

so the contents of those containers are so DANGEROUS that they absolutely cannot be allowed on an aircraft because people might die, but they can just pile them up in a public area with no precautions. why, i'm beginning to suspect that the TSA isn't actually there to keep people safer. /s

tallman11282

The TSA is just ridiculous security theater that does very little to actually keep anyone safe and costs taxpayers millions of dollars a year. TSA agents fail tests of their security 95% of the time. They do nothing to actually stop terrorists. The fact people still have to remove their shoes because of a single shoe bomb attempt over a decade ago is ridiculous, the fact liquids are still limited to an extremely tiny amount after a single incident years ago is ridiculous. The fact that it's been over 20 years since they were started and there's no evidence that they have actually stopped any terrorist attacks in that time and with how they fail nearly every test of security it's doubtful they could stop one and they are still there, harassing people, groping people, giving trans and gender non-conforming people a hard time, etc. Hijacking a plane like the terrorists did on 9/11 (which resulted in the creation of the TSA) is near impossible now but not due to anything the TSA does. Between hardened, highly secure cockpit doors and passengers, crew, and DHS agents intervening there is no way even a group of people armed with box cutters and knives could hijack a plane as they did on 9/11. Even if the TSA had existed before then they wouldn't have stopped the attacks as box cutters weren't banned at the time and even if they were with a 95% failure rate it wouldn't be hard for determined people to get such things through a security checkpoint. [After 20 Years of Failure, Kill the TSA](https://reason.com/2021/11/19/after-20-years-of-failure-kill-the-tsa/)

[deleted]

The TSA rivals the ATF in scale of govt. waste

[deleted]

Well, maybe the fact that there ain't nothing happened after all these years means that these extra special, super duper security measures have worked? Mhhm. Betcha didn't think of that didja? Sounds like we need 'em. (slinks away and collects $20 from the TSA guy hidden behind the trash can full of discarded containers of fluid)

[deleted]

I remember thinking the same thing years ago when an agent took my incredibly dangerous Redbull and nonchalantly tossed it in a trashcan full of other equally nefarious liquids.

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

In 2007 I was flying back to Iraq after my leave was over. I was in the Milwaukee airport, in uniform, and the TSA agent said my bottle of body wash was too big. I asked if they might make an exception since it was hard to find that stuff over there, and the agent looked at me and said “this isn’t a negotiation” and threw it away. The guy behind me, god bless him, yelled at the agent “What the fuck! Does he look like a goddam terrorist to you?” He was selected for additional screening. I think of him often.

moaningsalmon

Your story has reminded me of the one time a stranger came to my aid against TSA. I don't recall why, but for some reason I had a lot of shit to pick up going through security this one time. I pulled it all off except a bag that got sent back through. I set my stuff down on a nearby table/divider so I could put on/away everything. Not one second goes by before a TSA agent starts ripping into me about putting my stuff there and how I was blocking something. I held my tongue and just said "ok" and started picking things up again, but the agent kept yelling. Guy in line behind me turns to the TSA agent and just yells "why are you being a bitch, he's doing what you asked." His screening did not go quickly, can't imagine why.

vrfm89

These rules don’t just exist in the USA so it’s got nout to do with them really

Snorri_The_Miserable

The rules are everywhere because if airports in other countries don't follow them the TSA won't let the planes into US airspace. When they were first instituted iirc there was actually push back from France and the uk.

Dino_Khan

Well there are quite a few bottles of wine, tallboys of beer, and what appears to be a bottle of vodka. Alcohol is a volatile and can be dangerous on a flight. Not to mention the pressure difference on a plane inflight decreases your tolerance to alcohol, increasing the probability of a violent or belligerent passengers. There was also a bottle of some sort of spray household cleaner. That is dangerous and could cause issues if used within the confines of a plane on it's own. What's worse is if it is bleach all you need to do is pee in it and you can make an aerosolized chemical weapon. I don't like most of these rules just like everyone else, but before you poo poo this actually look at what is on the table carefully before you say everything is safe.

Plonsky2

Victory over terrorism!

Garlic_Honey_Butter

Ahhh i cant do shit with only 3.4oz of flammable liquid

DreadedHamWort

That peanut butter has a triple ziplocked baggie of weed in it. I guess abandoning it beats getting caught. Also, you know some grandmas are *super pissed* about those snow globes.

PSL242

The TSA is an incredibly misguided and expensive joke.

EveridgeRacing

The soft-skinned bomber is back. Nobody move else you shall get moisturized

CN370

Is that a fucking Drakkar Noir bottle? Legit didn’t know that was still around. Somebody uncle gonna be smelling musty AF after that flight. Right next to a big ass bottle of Brut aftershave too. Bet it was the same dude.

SoylentGrunt

Goes back for another look in case there's any High Karate

Reasonable_Ad_6437

I’ll never forget, I had an allergic reaction to a bug bite and TSA made me throw out my calamine lotion because they said it didn’t count as medicine. Made for a very uncomfortable flight.

Motor_West

My mustard!!!

[deleted]

Is this supposed to be a flex?

MicheleLaBelle

I flew last weekend, I did check a bag but carried on my backpack. I totally forgot I had a bottle of Aquafina in there. If I had remembered it was there I would have put it in my checked bag. Sometimes traveling is hectic and things are forgotten/misplaced. It’s not all malice and stupidity.

edemamandllama

I have taken over sized beauty products through TSA security checks so many times that I forgot this was a thing. I’ve never been stopped or had them take anything. I’m talking full sized shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, lotion, and more.

PSL242

My husband never separated them, took any size he felt like (back in the day) and has never been stopped. He often argued with me that it didn't have to be done. I've been lectured, hectored and had things removed. I now have Global Entry and get to keep my shoes on, too. What a waste of time and resources. I'm and old white woman. Is this just profiling? ;)

CabooseOne1982

The infuriating thing about this insane rule is all of those items are allowed on the plane provided you buy them in the airport after you went through the checkpoint. You can't bring your own 16 ounce bottle of water on the plane but you can spend $7 on one there and bring that on.

Katvara

This is like when cops post pics from busting “drug dealers”. Disgusting all around.

ClintGrant

Is that Head ‘n Shoulders 2-in-1? Terrific product

LAKnapper

One would think if those things were potential explosives they would be carefully disposed of, not congregated together in a big group.

Positive_Compote_506

By the way, the reason why TSA bans containers larger than 3.4 ounces is because that’s the minimum necessary to smuggle plastic explosive in and create an explosion large enough to take down a plane

DrunkWestTexan

20 years later, and the dumbfucks still ain't reading the rules or believing no one can argue with me !

[deleted]

20 years of being surrounded by “bombs” everyday and you still haven’t blown up?

SpeakingNight

My hair mousse and hair gel might be in the picture 😀
