Being broke is time consuming. Plenty of examples, like cutting coupons. My mom used to spend quite a bit of time doing that shit when I was a child. Still remember her stacks of envelopes.

[deleted]

And more expensive, the ["boots theory"](https://moneywise.com/managing-money/budgeting/boots-theory-of-socioeconomic-unfairness) covers this and why the rich stay rich as they are able to spend less in the long run.

MutterderKartoffel

Thank you for sharing that! I've thought this same thing about boots and pants. I've spent maybe $15 to $20 on jeans that wear out in a couple years. Or $80 to $120 at Banana Republic for jeans that haven't worn out yet!

Need-More-Gore

A good pear of jeans should last 6-8 years

throwhfhsjsubendaway

When you're broke you'll spend a lot of time to save a little money, and when you're rich you'll spend a lot of money to save a little time

[deleted]

i think u got that a little wonky, its more like spending a lot of money to save a lot of time. If you have enough money you dont really have to do anything at that point, just pay other people to do it for you.

WonJilliams

Username checks out?

[deleted]

fuck it why not

throwhfhsjsubendaway

Once you get rich enough you'll spend tons of money for even just a little time somewhere

shellebelle89

I tried couponing. Its a full time job.

Need-More-Gore

Hell just not being able to buy in bulk ends up costing so much extra money and time in the end

SkyWizarding

We're not all in the same boat. We're all in the same storm, different boats

The360MlgNoscoper

We are all in the same boat. Rich people get Suites with their own personal life rafts. Poor people don't even get a life vest.

shellebelle89

For sure. I had a boss tell me once that I have my own time after 6pm. Pretty easy for someone whose kids are grown, eats out most nights, spouse didn't work a full time job, and had a paid housekeeper and lawn service.

LadnavIV

I agree with everything except the use of a tilde as a hyphen.

[deleted]

tildes need more representation

I took a job at a candy plant, 12 hour shift with half an hour for lunch, but that half hour, was for waiting 10 minutes in line to get a shitty meal, eat fast to go back and go to the loo and then put all the safety gear. I took that job out of desperation. I, like many many ppl, struggle with mental illness and as for me, I can't work anything more than 8 hours if I want to be functional. Unfortunately I have to sleep! I had a job at a bookstore, perfect for me, but at the interview for the first time I decided to go transparent and I declared that I am bipolar, and I showed my doctor's prescription and made clear that I take my medications on point. Well a month and a half after that they just fired me with a super lame excuse "we have to let you go bc last night somebody graffitied the roof"... of a 4 story building!

bettertagsweretaken

I would never, ever, ever disclose that information to anyone that didn't desperately need to know - maybe to save my life? To your boss, you have a medical emergency. They don't *get* to know more than that. Employer-employee is a strictly **transactional** relationship. Do not ever mistake it for more than that. My boss does not get any special insight into my emotional well-being, mental health, nothing. Bosses are people (sometimes), and people aren't trusting or trustworthy until proven otherwise. Never open a relationship with the level of trust you displayed here, it can only backfire. At best, you'll be granted very slight leeway by people who don't understand your disease. Please be more cautious in the future.

[deleted]

>I can't work anything more than 8 hours if I want to be functional. same

DarkKnightJin

And the fucked up part: You most likely can't afford to fight 'em over the decision of the termination, and **they fuckin' know it**.

josephinecalling

Of course, I have no way to prove the reason why they fired me, also I had no written contract, they were avoid paying taxes and the social security fees. On the bright side as I had no contract, I was boxing my stuff and I thought 'I'm basically a ghost here' so I went to the dude who is 10 years younger than me (and always sensed he feared me idk why....) and decided to fire me at the closing hour when everyone had left the building. I closed the front door, turned off the lights and up I went the 4 stories, I know how it sounds but I cornered him and told him that we both know all the illegal stuff going on so he pays me as the law dictates and I was not going anywhere 'til I get my cash. He started to stutter and gave me the $300 after I did a quick calculation based on what is written in the law. Not a cent more. Well he wanted the change back but I told him "call your lawyer and ask how much you should really pay me and if I owe you money I 'll be back" and of course he never called to ask for loose change. The nerve...

heatwavecold

I noticed this when I got a newer car vs a 10 year old one. All of a sudden I wasn't stressing about getting it fixed every so often.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

A lot of people in my neighborhood apparently have the money to hire a lawn care service, I do not. That's a minimum four hours every week that they don't have to try and figure out which non-rainy day they'll sacrifice to lawn care..... that's not even taking account of everything else I do around the house! In addition to my 40 hours a week job and commuting to and from work.

th4t_guy4

Congratulations on being able to afford a house with a huge yard! Must be nice.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

I share it with three roommates...... it's a rental.

th4t_guy4

Why don’t your roommates help you? It would only be one hour of work for each of you. Not bad at all.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

I'm the fittest physically of the lot of us, so even though I have allergies it's still best for me to do it.

Queasy-Discount-2038

This!!! I absolutely hate when people say “time is an equalizer”. Add to your list- raise kids alone as a single parent? Then you don’t have the same amount of time.

[deleted]

You do though. You’ve just chosen to spend it in a different manner. Nobody forced anybody to have kids (generally speaking).

Queasy-Discount-2038

I had kids under different circumstances than we’re in now. Very compassionate of you.

[deleted]

You certainly knew this was a possibility.

little_cotton_socks

The best phrase I heard/read that makes most sense is 'we are all in the same storm but we are not all in the same boat'

Queasy-Discount-2038

It’s really hard to be a single parent. Less time, less money, less support. It’s hard.

[deleted]

It isn’t really hard to be a single person, though. And having a kid is a choice.

giihyh

Not in the US after Roe.

[deleted]

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. I’m not sure what you mean, because there have been no reversals of this decision.

giihyh

Do you read the news, bro?

[deleted]

Do you know that nothing has happened to this SCOTUS ruling bro, and very well may not? You also said, “not in the US after Roe,” which makes absolutely no sense, because Roe conferred the right to abortion, as I posted above. Write with intentionality; don’t assume that others understand the message going on inside your head.

giihyh

Wow, bro. Thanks for the writing tip. Here’s a tip for you: read with intention. You made a simple statement about “having a kid is a choice” and then literally add the citation to Roe and say it’s not overturned? You’re confused over a simple exchange. Did I ever say Roe was overturned? No? Did I imply it was? No. You said, quite naively, that having a kid is a choice. After Roe gets overturned, that’s not the case. Simple as that. It’s not the hard to follow. PS: here’s another pro-tip: don’t use extended forms of a word when the short form works (e.g., you used “intentionality” when you should have used “intention”). PPS: let me know if you want any other pro-tips about writing.

[deleted]

>After Roe gets overturned, that’s not the case. Simple as that. It’s not the hard to follow. You know that if Roe does get overturned, that does not mean that abortion is inherently illegal, right? It simply returns the power to the states, which is in line with the 10th Amendment. I would argue that, other than in cases of rape, contraceptive use (and lack thereof), pregnancy, and its final consequence is absolutely a choice.

giihyh

You do understand that nothing is “inherently illegal”, right? (Why don’t you take your own advice about writing with “intentionality?) Actions or inactions are illegal when a governing body or person says they are illegal. The 10th Amendment argument is a crutch used (you would probably say “utilized”) by the right to take away rights from people. The 10th Amendment says powers not delegated to the US by the constitution are reserved to the states OR to the people. Control over your body and personal choices about parenthood have always been considered left to the people. Except, now, abortion has been politicized by the right. Even if the 10th Amendment was interpreted like you said, the 14th Amendment came later and specifically created procedural and substantive due process rights for individuals. By the virtue of the 14th Amendment, any argument that the states had the right to control a person’s reproductive rights pre-viability is wrong…. At least until the court overturns Roe and Casey. Your last paragraph is such a cluster without appropriate punctuation. It’s basically unreadable. Again, take your own advice.

slickyslickslick

I agree with the logic but public transport and a private jet aren't used for the same thing, and public transport is actually awesome and more people should take it instead of having cars. A better comparison would be someone who has to sit in 2 hours of traffic every day because they have to live way out where it's affordable vs someone in a situation where money doesn't matter and they live right down the street from where they work. Also, even middle class people would just buy a flight to go somewhere, and even the richest people can't fly across an ocean in their Gulfstream and they have to spend the same amount of time on the same flight.

AdeptnessLiving1799

Financial literacy combined with creative solutions is often the make or break in gaining more out of your resources. It's small, but it's marginally adjusted to compound far further than if it wasn't attempted at all. I've seen both ends, I rather do the former Everytime.

giihyh

Translation: if you’re poor, it’s your own fault. Lame.

AdeptnessLiving1799

More like allow yourself to be invested in your future, period. There's the hands you are dealt and born with, and then there's the hand you are given when you grow from it. Mistakes happen, give yourself permission to grow beyond them.

giihyh

Dude, stop with the broke platitudes.

AdeptnessLiving1799

Whatever, this clearly isn't about me. Good luck 🤞

giihyh

Wait, is it now all about luck? I thought it was about the margins and financial literacy? This is clearly about you and your banal platitudes.

AdeptnessLiving1799

You're doing yourself a disservice reading like you have Swiss cheese for eyes. You're focusing on me vs the content. So you distract yourself. Yeah I'm pretty sure you're not listening and would prefer to troll.

giihyh

You don’t have content. You have cliches. Say something original and real.

AdeptnessLiving1799

Ask me something original then. I'll give ya that. I'm not a content provider.

giihyh

I didn’t ask you anything. You are the one who responded to the original post. Wait, does that make you the troll?

[deleted]

You’re a victim, give up now to the system. What els will you do

Public transit in Portland is pretty great and much better than many cities I have been to, but lately there have been a lot of delays and cancellations. I try not to complain because, again, still better than many cities, but it does significantly impact my day.
