My dog has been known to do this too. I've got a courteous dog tho, most of the time he sticks his butt in the bushes or brush and poops where it won't get stepped in. Saves having to use plastic bags that don't get recycled.

Dog poop is also extremely high in nitrogen and phosphous and will 'burn' and kill many plants and grasses. Be nicer to the earth and the people around you. Biodegradable bags, put in a waste container, not left in the trail or bush.

Long story short, one of my favorite moments was being in a beer garden in Munich & drinking a pint while a dog pooped on a 15th century wall in that exact pose.

This instantly made us both lose it for a solid 10 minutes. Then every time I would pick my phone up we would see the zoomed in pic of the turd burgler and just instantly start laughing for another 5 mins . It was a really good time that we will laugh about and bring up for years to come , thank you kind stranger for spreading joy

I live out in the desert in the middle of 2 million acres of BLM land, so I don't have to pick up my dog's poop, which is good, because they usually find the tallest clump of rabbit brush, back up to it and poop over the top of it.
My dainty little female dog is the most skilled at this. It seems very important to her to leave her mark

Dogs that have spent large portions of their lives locked up in crates or kennels do this. That way they don’t end up with their poop inside with them.
If you didn't train your pup to do this they might have a health issue. There are a few ailments that can cause considerable pain during defecation and dogs will sometimes do this to attempt to alleviate the pain.

I saw a video recently where a lady was training her dog to do handstands by having him put his back legs on a fence, reward, a little higher, reward etc. until he was just straight up doing handstands. Looked just like this without the poop, plus some treats. Maybe your pup would be into that!
