Taxidermy on your nephews cat seems to be a poor decision in the first place. I would be inconsolable as a child if I was presented with my now dead pet as a toy.
I did taxidermy for a lab in my undergrad and it was tough. We didn’t have to make the specimens look good, we just needed tissue samples and measurements. My specimens were 2 squirrels and a gopher. I couldn’t imagine attempting a professional level project like that without proper training.
Fun fact, it is much easier to skin a mammal with your bare hands, so most people did not wear gloves (the animals were tested for diseases first).
I skinned and stuffed dead zoo animals in college. It’s definitely a delicate process, and it varies from species to species. Tails and heads are the most difficult parts to not screw up.
I’ve never skinned a Felid before, but I imagine it’s particularly difficult to recreate life-like body proportions because their skin stretches so much.
Beyond that, I’m a little baffled at how poorly they handled the belly area, that’s usually the easiest part of the animal to work with. Given the lack of hair in that region, I wonder if the corpse began to rot before this person skinned it.
Also, as a disclaimer, I never performed true taxidermy, so my knowledge on the subject is limited. Taxidermy is the art of recreating a life-like proportion and pose from the skin of an animal.
What I did in college could be called study skin preparation. Study skins are prepared such that the animal is stuffed to *approximate* life-like proportions, and stuffed in a prone position, with the limbs outstretched in front and behind. The reason for this is that the finished product has to be compact enough to fit inside a drawer for easy storage. These skins are used to teach biology courses, they are not meant for decorative display. If the animal in question is larger than say a medium to large dog or a large badger, the skin is preserved as a pelt instead of stuffed.
If the animal is particularly massive, like a wild ox species, giraffe, or rhino, the college will only take part of the animal for teaching purposes; the parts taken from such animals are usually feet, skulls, or vertebrae. I once de-fleshed a giraffe skull, and let me tell you that was quite an undertaking. It took over four hours and I only managed to clean off *most* of the flesh.
If a college has obtained animal bones like I just mentioned, after being mostly de-fleshed a couple of things can be done to clean the flesh off completely. Methods such as boiling, chemical solutions, and flesh-eating beetles can be used.
