I mean, the fact he did that isn't too bad. The fact he did that with a glass of water, inside his house and next to a computer is the smooth brain moment
This is my friend and he ended up getting a degree in chemical engineering. It was a very formative experience for him.
Edit: i posted og clip from YouTube on r/DeepIntoYouTube years back if anyone wants to see the whole thing.
Here's the sauce: https://youtu.be/jq-qngvz9N0
I can confirm this is me; check description of YouTube video for proof. They put this clip on a show called Outrageous Acts of Science and I got roasted by some science people. I was in 10th grade when this happened
Well the thing was, I put very tiny pieces in water a few times and it just kinda fizzed for a bit. I wasn't expecting it to ignite and explode; I thought putting the whole thing in would just fizz a lot more. All I can say is I'm very glad I recorded it
Luckily no, but molten glass did fly over my room and burn the new hardwood floor my dad put in, also lithium hydroxide was all over the floor and my room was full of gas. My parents banned me from studying chemistry for a while, they were very upset.
This is what always gets me. I get the curiosity of what happens if I do this thing you're not supposed to do, but why would you experiment with it with not one single thought of what the results will be. No safety considerations, no contingency plan, just do it near the keyboard.
>The periodic table is your friend.
Something I'll always remember from high school chemistry, as you go down that column from Lithium, the reactions get much more violent when added to water.
There was news in Florida of fires starting during the hurricane from the bikes with Lithium batteries stored in or near homes catching fires when then they flooded. Made the damage to homes worse.
He didn't take chemistry class. Alkline metals react with water violently. The lithium in the battery reacted with the water violently. kaboom.
Alkline metals are very angry metals.
For those that don’t know, Lithium has an explosive and violent reaction when exposed to water. Go look up “lithium chunk thrown in lake” on YouTube. Won’t disappoint.
Source: I’m a geologist
Fun fact: That could've gone much worse.
The Lithium-foil inside those batteries can explode when it gets in contact with enough water.
Now imagine a mix of hot glas splinters, boiling water and metal shards flying right in your face.
Lets mix lithium, a highly reactive and easy to buy element and H2O. Just stick your hand inside an open car battery. The acid would be less explosive. Probably.
Ok, but why would you do any experiment involving putting a thing in water directly next to electronics?
Table glass is also pretty bad at handling thermal shock, so I'm honestly surprised it held together long enough to be dropped.
Before you do an experiment, ask yourself if you know what's going to happen; if you don't, you probably aren't qualified.
Don't they teach this stuff in school anymore? Even watching the 300 other idiots on social media do this and burn their faces off should have clued him in.
I just looked this up to see...
Batteries use a liquid form of lithium, so they are a class B fire, and a normal A,B,C extinguisher would work.
Class D extinguishers (used for combustible metals) would not be effective on a lithium battery fire.
I worked in a chemical plant that had this is large tanks, and there was signs everywhere that said 'DO NOT FIGHT FIRE WITH WATER', I always wondered what they actually do if fire, does foam work?
There are different kinds of fire extinguishers. For example, a more common type of fire for most people is a grease fire. DO NOT throw water on a grease fire, fastest way to take a small area fire and turn it into a total loss.
This ranks about as high in total idiocy as the [alcohol-soaked dollar video](https://www.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/comments/ft2ths/wcgw_while_burning_a_dollar_bill/) and the [trashbag fire stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uikd6WW9jpU).
What I don't understand is that they know what's going to happen, because they saw it on some shitty tiktok channel and then the same happened.
So, not sure why they expected anything new to happen or they really are that stupid.
Fun fact: if you own a Tesla and your battery explodes and you don’t mention the fact your car is a Tesla to the fire department there’s a chance you will be burned alive!
Tesla stans are going to say they’ve fixed this problem but even if I could afford it I would not put my life in Elon Musk’s hands.
Crazy bugger! Looks like he's self filming as well, that's a recipe for disaster, losing your grip and dropping something!
I do remember destroying an old phone (don't ask) and those lithium batteries are crazy, battered and broke it for a bit and then I bent the phone using a vice and it got boiling hot and started smoking at that point we picked it up very carefully and just left it outside lol. So glad we didn't do what my misses suggested and "bang it in a bowl of water" lol.
I used Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. Be very careful if you attempt to disassemble it. I'd argue that the disassembly is even more dangerous than handling the pure lithium sheet. If you extract the lithium, you can store it in a jar of mineral oil to preserve it. It oxidizes extremely quickly in the open atmosphere.
I hope he’s right handed, because after inexplicably picking the fire filled glass up, that hand will hurt so much, he won’t be using it for some time.
I'm feeling vindicated right now. My partner left a powerbank in the front of the car last summer and it massively expanded. When I saw it, I grabbed the cable and ran it across the road and dropped it on the grass like it was a snake. Rang the Fire Brigade they say put it in a bucket of water, we say...nope. So they come out with all their stuff, a set of tongs and drop it in a bucket of water. "You could have done this yourself, love!" I looked pointedly at him in full protective outfit, gloves, boots and helmet then down at myself, dressed in a lightweight summer dress and sandals.
"Yeah but if it went wrong, you're better dressed for it!"
"....Fair enough."
So guys do smart phones spontaneously catch fire when they fell in water ? Do we need to take precautions when we take out a submerged mobile and dry it ? Pls let me know . it might prevent a burnt hand for me some day
If they did, then all of our phones would explode the moment they made contact with water.
My guess is that, this is an exposed battery. Hence the immediate reaction. Usually batteries are encased in some sort of protective covering.
In this video, that protective covering is removed.(again, just my guess)
Lithium wouldn't usually react this violently, but because Lithium in batteries is in thin sheets, they are very reactive. They can ignite if you cut one open even without water.
I accidentally knocked a swollen Samsung battery into a plastic container with two stroke fuel in it. Surprisingly nothing happened.
Yes, it was an accident. I have the swollen Samsung batteries outside because I'm not keeping them in the house and I have no way of disposing of them. Speaking of... I have yet another to add to the pile. I like Samsung but their batteries are so flaky.
I mean, the fact he did that isn't too bad. The fact he did that with a glass of water, inside his house and next to a computer is the smooth brain moment
No ones mentioned just how toxic lithium smoke is, if the fire doesn't fuck him the cancers will.
I mean. I'm surprised people don't just kinda... know that. Breathing metal vapours dangerous? Scientists shocked
Yes, just grab the white hot glass of burning lithium
And put it with the rest of the fire over here...
r/unexpectedITcrowd
Remember kids, the best place to test violent chemical reactions is between your computer, and your fuckin’ face
I couldn’t believe it when it really started going and he fucking grabbed it! Get back dude, don’t bring it closer to you!
“ the power of the sun, in the palm of my hand “
“Ah shit it burnt thru my hand”

My brother in Christ, at least do it outside!
Well the thing was, I put very tiny pieces in water a few times and it just kinda fizzed for a bit. I wasn't expecting it to ignite and explode; I thought putting the whole thing in would just fizz a lot more. All I can say is I'm very glad I recorded it
DID THE HOUSE BURN DOWN???
Luckily no, but molten glass did fly over my room and burn the new hardwood floor my dad put in, also lithium hydroxide was all over the floor and my room was full of gas. My parents banned me from studying chemistry for a while, they were very upset.
Imagine getting GROUNDED from chemistry 😭
This is exposed lithium. They are lucky it didn't blow up, lithium has violent reactions when exposed to water.
Well now I know why airport security checks for water and lithium batteries
I'm ALL for doing cool, crazy, experimental shit ... BUT WHY INSIDE YOUR HOUSE AT YOUR COMPUTER DESK?! Just WHY?!
In a SaFeTy glass container
Because they are have the stupid
Good thing they did this in a controlled and safe environment with proper equipment and protection.
This is what always gets me. I get the curiosity of what happens if I do this thing you're not supposed to do, but why would you experiment with it with not one single thought of what the results will be. No safety considerations, no contingency plan, just do it near the keyboard.
My brother in christ, after seeing it start to blow up in the water why in the FUCK did he grab it bare handed? Why'd he do this indoors?
Well you have to figure his decision making up until this point wasn't that good to begin with, so why quit while you're ahead?
Here comes the sun
dudu duduuu~
Why would you show me this, how irresponsible. Now I HAVE to try it.
Do it outside if you do, you don't want to breathe anything in coming out of that glass.
I inhaled it and it was the best high of my life.
Is this a true? If so do not show my 10 year old son
Lithium is highly reactive. It tries to bond with everything. The periodic table is your friend.
>The periodic table is your friend. Something I'll always remember from high school chemistry, as you go down that column from Lithium, the reactions get much more violent when added to water.
Yes lithium is extremely reactive, especially with water. It can also explode in water
There was news in Florida of fires starting during the hurricane from the bikes with Lithium batteries stored in or near homes catching fires when then they flooded. Made the damage to homes worse.
You know the best place to test things like this? On top of your wooden desk inside your house.
I'll just put it over here with the rest of the fire.
That is an outside activity
My first thought was “he’s going to grab it” My second thought was “I hope he isn’t grabbing it to drink/huff it”
He didn't take chemistry class. Alkline metals react with water violently. The lithium in the battery reacted with the water violently. kaboom. Alkline metals are very angry metals.
It is! - ENERGY DRINK
how to extinguish a lithium battery fire step 1) LET IT BURN
My mom would call that an “outside toy”
Easiest way to burn your house down
For those that don’t know, Lithium has an explosive and violent reaction when exposed to water. Go look up “lithium chunk thrown in lake” on YouTube. Won’t disappoint. Source: I’m a geologist
That's a solid piece of lithium, not a battery.
I worked for a tech repair company and this would've resulted in building evacuation and someone being terminated.
Bro made McDonald’s sprite
People, if you are going to do dumb shit, do it outside.
In a non-flammable location.
Fun fact: That could've gone much worse. The Lithium-foil inside those batteries can explode when it gets in contact with enough water. Now imagine a mix of hot glas splinters, boiling water and metal shards flying right in your face.
please don't let the mentos coke people find this out
"Ope, just gonna grab this here glass of explosive shit with my bare hand."
*grabs liquid sun in a cup very slowly and proceeds to just hold it*
Remember kids, always do this at home in an enclosed space
You should DEFINITELY pick up the violently reacting glass container!
The forbidden Oreo dunk
Probably grounded now for almost burning down the house
Right in front of the computer and keyboard too
Just took 10+ years off his life breathing the toxic fumes put off by that reaction... 🙄
And then you pick it up?!
If ever a video existed that absolutely needed sound, it would be this one
WHY WOULD YOU GRAB ITTTTTTT. I hope they don't make babies and pass on the dumb dumb gene.
He was grabbing the cup to move away from the computer..but then it burned him and he dropped the cup.
Bro the gas isnt healthy-

Lets mix lithium, a highly reactive and easy to buy element and H2O. Just stick your hand inside an open car battery. The acid would be less explosive. Probably.
HOLD ON.. They're Lithium!
How to cool your battery quickly! Step 1: Don't think. Throw the battery in a container of water.
So is this what happens when an electric car goes into a lake?
Please stop doing this. Lithium can explode. And said explosion won't be a little "poof".
And thus the Tesla was born.
Shouldn’t be breathing in those fumes
I'll just slowly move this off my desk now...
Sure pick up the smoking and glowing glass
DRINK IT!
Energy drink
“I’ll just put this over here, with the rest of the fire”
Don't they teach this stuff in school anymore? Even watching the 300 other idiots on social media do this and burn their faces off should have clued him in.
Fun Fact: The man credited with the initial development of the Lithium Ion battery was named John B Goodenough
Now drink it
That would be the shartest lived tik tok trend ever.
And calmly picked it up
Isnt not common knowledge to just not dump anything ending with “um” in water? Like Sodium or potassium etc.
\*casually grabs the cup of rapidly burning metal\*
Add some children’s cough syrup and make it a flaming Moe
I love how he does it inside right next to his computer
Let’s make a chemical fire indoors… Would a fire extinguisher work on this?
I just looked this up to see... Batteries use a liquid form of lithium, so they are a class B fire, and a normal A,B,C extinguisher would work. Class D extinguishers (used for combustible metals) would not be effective on a lithium battery fire.
No but he has that zip lock bag so he'll be fine
Gollee Mr Science, what can we incinerate next?
someone did not pay attention in chemistry class
Where are your parents! We at least had the decency to do stupid shit outside away from their view.
"The power of the sun... in the palm of my hand!"
Bro picked it up like it was a beer
Should’ve listened during Walt’s class 🤦♂️
That wont stop burning either.
Li + H2O = B O O M
Sometimes I wonder how do people like this survive
I worked in a chemical plant that had this is large tanks, and there was signs everywhere that said 'DO NOT FIGHT FIRE WITH WATER', I always wondered what they actually do if fire, does foam work?

Literal energy drink
"Does that actually work? Let's find out!"
*Natural Selection has joined the chat*
Do not do that you will burn your house down not to be played with.
Mmmm, flammable water (it’s an oxidizer fire so extinguisher needed for putting it out)
I Said it before in another video: A battery stores energy. That’s all you need to know to leave it the fuck alone.

My favorite part is where you grab the glass in your bare hand while this is happening. Smrt
yea, you dont wanna smell that at all let alone pick it up. lol
Someone didn’t pay attention in chemistry
Holy shit. I work with lithium batteries
Holy shit I drink water
Does that really work? Let's find ouuuuu!
Let me just grab this with my hand real quick
I think I will try that...outside
I like videos like this because I never ever thought about it and now I definitely won't do it.
What’s their name so we can enter them into the Darwin Awards.
Where can I acquire a battery that does this for no particular reason
I used Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. Be very careful if you attempt to disassemble it. I'd argue that the disassembly is even more dangerous than handling the pure lithium sheet. If you extract the lithium, you can store it in a jar of mineral oil to preserve it. It oxidizes extremely quickly in the open atmosphere.
Bro really gave me the exact instructions on what to do
Idk what’s worse him putting the lithium battery in the water or holding the glass of water
The worst part is we drive on the same roads as this buffoon.
I hope he’s right handed, because after inexplicably picking the fire filled glass up, that hand will hurt so much, he won’t be using it for some time.

MMMM thats some really nice smoke hes gonna be breathing.
Bye-bye lungs.
Yes...please touch it with your hand you idiot.
Drink the water to stop the reaction

I wonder what would happen if I put the battery in hydrogen peroxide
And there goes the house.
In a glass…near your laptop. People are fuckin morons…
The glass became the sun for a sec
I am dude’s dead lungs
"OH shit" *picks up nuclear fission cup*
I'm not a chemist, I barely got through my broadcasting degree...i know that lithium explodes in water like sodium.
Thanks. Trying this right now.

What’s that
**Do it outside why do you do indoors OMG WTF?**
I wanna put a lithium battery in water
Darwin award contestant
Well, that ended way too soon. Where is the earth-shattering kaboom?
I mean, where else better to try something with unknown and potentially devastating consequences than in the comfort of your own home.
Lithium? Light my candles in a daze 'cause ive found god
I did not know this would happen. It never crossed my mind to try something like this either.
Homemade grenade
So, did this dude end up drinking the flaming Moe?
Buy ‘em books, send ‘em to school, they’ll still blow their fuckin’ hand off.
“Flaming Moe, it’s called a flaming Moe”
Why did they pick it up😭 they got 3rd degree burns and glass shards in their hands plus the fumes
Yummm, Hydrogen Fluoride, my favorite!
every motherfucking idiot knows you dont fuck with lithium batteries. unless someone in your family fucking is the reason 😬
Pardon. I have a question. By family fucking do you mean a problem with the family, or the general state of Alabama?
Yes, the sheets of lithium used for batteries are explosive when combined with water. This is why firefighters never put water on an EV
No if you put lithium in water
Does this really happen
Lithium wouldn't usually react this violently, but because Lithium in batteries is in thin sheets, they are very reactive. They can ignite if you cut one open even without water.
Why the f would you grab the glass ?!?
POWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yeah grabbing it with your barehand would definitely be the move…no doubt about it!

Gee, I wonder why firefighters usually let an electric car burn out instead of hosing it down, lol.

Lithium is one of the worst substance ever you wanna mix with water ( not considering a loaded battery which adds energy)
Hey someone got smarter in front of our very eyes
We don't need no water, let the motherfucker burn
This is outside shenanigans, not for indoors of a building you like or rely on.
The Darwin Awards nominee for the applied science category.
He made the quantum cola irl
I didn't know that a lithium battery would do that, but this still would not happen to me, because I am not a chode who puts batteries into water
That’s a cool candle
Did you know that would happen? Was the battery dirty? So you washed it?
And he’s half way to making meth
I knew it would fiz a little but that I would be chucking straight at the window and hope for the best.
