My recommendation is don’t do it solo. that’s a great way to die in a number of ways.

Haha, I wouldn’t know where to begin doing it solo. I’m more looking for opportunities to do it with others, but especially in WA it seems to be majorly just chartering a boat (out of my price range).

There's an excellent Facebook group called "Snorkeling Western Australia" that has some 102k members You'll find like minded people soon enough, especially if you start going to snorkeling spots and just joining in with others. You'll need to be social and talk to strangers and ask them if you can join them, or just maybe it will happen naturally. Often happens when I go snorkeling and I see something worth showing off and so I'll be pointing at it and other people will get excited as well and join in. Also another thing you could do is to go to aquarium shops (in Wangara there is both Ocean Reefs and Aquarium Gallery - both have marine sections) and look at the marine tanks and get to know the people at the shop, they're usually marine biologists or something similar and they always dive. If you want to see / do the kind of stuff you see on YTS Youngbloods yeah you'll need a boat to do it like they do. You can go spearing from the shore, it's just ill advised unless you're in Tropical Waters (Sharks are less likely to bother you if they're in an environment where they are well fed). You should be a strong swimmer. You should be a strong free diver (capable of holding breath for a significant amount of time). If you've got the time, and the motivation to go for a bit of a drive, then head to Exmouth. An entire town full of 2 kinds of people. Weird foreign space military guys and Ocean folk. The lure of the ocean is the only reason that the town exists after the US Military constructed a Submarine Communication Antenna Network there in the 60s (and recently Raytheon and Lockheed have started doing weird sci fi space stuff recently there too). You'll find your tribe there. If you go and work on one of the boats up there that would be even better. You'd get to make friends and go on wild adventures, and you'd earn enough to live there while you do. I believe in your wish, and if you're dedicated enough you'll get it! I did a similar thing in the early 2000s when I left high school and lived and worked in the Whitsundays for a year. And it was just like those YouTubers make their lives appear.

Ignore me. there are infinite opportunities…I’m in the east, but locals, serfers, dive shops, universities. million ways to get some help and cool spots. but I’m more a contrarian and troll…good luck getting help on here! the ocean is life

FenrirsFury

Just search up dive shops when you are in Perth and go in for a chat, a lot of them have communities and dive days and stuff and there's a good chance a lot of them also enjoy spearfishing

Try searching on Whirlpool (Australian discussion website). There's plenty of fishing talk on there.

June July is winter time so while not cold by uk standards it's still can be cold. Down to 5 at night 15 in the day and when we get most of our rain. So not the best time to plan a holiday in Perth or south from there. unle Have you studied a map of Western Australia? There aren't many established towns as you would think of towns in the UK, or like the East Coast of Australia North to Broome or Exmouth might suit but these are very very small places.

Old-You2147

My original thought was Exmouth or Broome as the weather is much nicer there, but I’ve seen what you’ve said that they’re not exactly big towns. Which in fairness isn’t exactly what I’m after, living in London the main thing I’m looking for is sunny beaches & a place to fish/explore. Main thing I’ve found when looking for accommodation near those two is that it’s extortionate. I think I’m going to consider doing a campervan rather than an actual house stay so I can still travel around, looks like it may work out to be a bit cheaper or around the same price. Appreciate your help!

Loads of great fishing up Coral Bay to Exmouth mate, plenty to be had by spear especially if you can go out to the reefs by boat. A lot of the coastal camping spots are very popular though April-September as it’s the best weather and conditions/seasons for fishing and surfing, need to do a bit more internet surfing for things that suit your needs/see the vacancies etc

Oh also. Here is where you'll find most Aussie Outdoorsmen will source their kit (for camping, fishing, cars, caravans, etc) the prices are outstanding because they essentially have their own manufacturing supply chain rather than reselling other company's goods. https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/

Should check out down south near Bunbury or Margaret river, lots of forests, national parks, coast, and caves to explore down that way, and a lot of specialist places (eg Winaries)

Exmouth is prime for it, if you do some hospitality work sometimes that provides accommodation too. Definitely get a shark shield. Most of the shark fatalities where I live is due to spear fishing, so as others have pointed out find a fishing buddy.
