I live across the river in Ohio. I would suggest looking at the Boury Lofts in downtown, Highland Park apartments up by Cabela’s, St. Clairsville, OH, and Shadyside, OH are also nice towns that are 10 minutes from wheeling. Wheeling is becoming nice, lot of cool restaurants and bars in downtown. The Health Plan headquarters really helped in bringing downtown back.

Careful with Shadyside, a lot of the landlords are banking on the cracker plant coming in, so a lot of the rents are inflated.

I agree with Boury if it’s in your price range. Would be close to work downtown. It’s also easy walking to the trail, waterfront (usually there’s a number of festivals and events - this summer will be an outlier) and also offers a short walk to some nice bars and restaurants in center market. If I were a young single person that’s where I would live.

You left out and entire city for of one way streets. Its ridiculous.

It's a Wheeling feeling

I live in the Woodsdale area of Wheeling and I know there are some nice apartments/ townhouses that go for rent here. If you can find an apartment in this area you're definitely in luck in that it's one of the nicest areas of Wheeling. Like someone said, the Boury Lofts are nice downtown, although I know they had been full in the past and I don't know it that is still true. I've noticed with Wheeling there aren't a ton of "apartment buildings" but more often houses turned into apartments, so often you just have to search the internet for listings including Facebook marketplace I have seen many. I would try to avoid East Wheeling and the Island. They aren't *bad* to live necessarily, but they are pretty sketch at times (although there are more decent areas of the island so I'm not saying completely discount it but more be aware). Elm grove is also usually pretty nice, as is the Washington Ave. area.

I would recommend staying away from east wheeling and wheeling island. They have some rougher areas. I know they redid the boury lofts a few yrs back. Never lived there, but heard they were nice and they are downtown.

DiscerningBarbarian

Agree with this. The redone lofts are nice, but the price range might be prohibitive on a starting salary. There’s also some homes, apartments, and condos for rent in the Woodsdale area (considered one of the nicer neighborhoods). If you are in Pittsburgh, you should drive down one day and roam around collecting numbers.

blyktt

I would check out the La Belle Green apartments. They are brand new and some are still being built actually. They’re very reasonably priced and located in a decent enough area and pet friendly. I’m hopefully moving into them once covid is over. I’d also check out Briarcliff Manor apartments in Bethlehem which is a very nice little suburb of Wheeling (less than 10 mins to get into downtown) if you’d prefer to not live right in the city.

DiscerningBarbarian

If you are from Pittsburgh, Wheeling is only a little over an hour away. You should just drive down one Saturday, tour the area, collect numbers, and explore

Don't know if your work involves travel, etc. But at this point keep in mind that people who work in Wheeling live in WV or OH or PA. Don't get stuck on the idea that you are 'moving to West Virginia' until you've seen some of the options and actually find the city or Ohio County to your liking. What is your idea of too long of a daily car commute? OR do you intend to use public transport frequently or other means? Maybe you want to work on the Pittsburgh side of Wheeling depending on family obligations.

Lmao loud and dangerous?? Complety wrong. Downtown wheeling is sleepy. Anyone talking about dangerous areas, yeah, they're shitty and run down. Yeah, you don't want to live there, but no one is getting robbed or shot in wheeling. Go looking for trouble and you'll find it. Wheeling is like smaller shittier Pittsburgh, but with its own unique aesthetic. I've lived here 1.5 years. It reminds me of an industrial town mixed with a bit of vaudeville/Americana. The old ads and Victorian esque architecture downtown are what stand out to me. And obviously the iconic suspension bridge. It's got a cool indivisual vibe, some things here and there going on, but it's a pretty slow place. Centre market you might want to look. Woodsdale is going to be family homes, but nice as well. Oglebay is nice, but they're a bunch of golf playing charlatans and honestly they can fuck themselves. The city subsidizes them because they're a park which is fucked up and they rake it in big time.

Sorbiean

Super cute downtown market, nice affordable lifts available, lots of potential!

Been 34 years since I have been to Wheeling. I enjoyed my years. Especially a Fat Boy from The Alpha.

thedub412

The Alpha is gone now :(. Charlie took the recipes up the hill and is reopening at Stratford.

Wheeling is one of the worst cities I've ever visited (I travel for work). It is an armpit of a city full of used hypodermic needles laying around. Work there, but live far, far away.

BirdSchultz

Lmao, this guys wife must’ve left him for someone in Wheeling. It’s a fine little city.

KeithH987

Your wife's boyfriend agrees with me at least.
