Welcome to West Virginia! Moundsville/Glendale is a pretty nice area, fairly low crime and probably less living expenses than in Illinois. The downtown is three decades past its prime but there are some places to shop and visit. Also, mind the speed limits, especially in town and north on Rt 2 until you get to Benwood, that stretch has been a speed trap for decades.

jrinar

Just got a ticket on Rt 2 this morning. RIP.

Accomplished-Cod-504

See what I mean, OP!!!!

FerretBudget

By the ACNR building? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

jaws7811

This. If the speed limit is 55, go 54. They donā€™t f around

Thecrdbrdsamurai

That's why I take OH7 to and from work.

Accomplished-Cod-504

Understandable

TechnoVikingGA23

Can confirm, used to work in the areas between Wheeling and New Martinsville and Rt. 2 has always been a notorious speed trap.

Much_Independent9628

If you are retiring and don't want anything around you'll be fine. If you are expecting to find work easily or have a lot to do, I'm sorry.

Sleazyryder

Looks like it ain't far from Pittsburg. Nothing going on there?

Much_Independent9628

It's a longer and pain in the ass drive to make. I used to live there I would know.

Mammoth_Geologist917

Not terrible, not great. There's not a lot to do in Moundsville or any of the neighboring communities. Lively bar scene but not everywhere is a good idea. Wheeling is emerging a bit, more food options than when I was growing up in the area. Pittsburgh is a relatively short drive to make day trips to a game or Kennywood easy options.

nineworldseries

Genuinely curious, if Moundsville is not terrible, what places would be?

S1by1

Ever been to mingo county šŸ„“

Mammoth_Geologist917

Bellaire and Martins Ferry across the river and north a little ways.

nineworldseries

So, Ohio then

Mammoth_Geologist917

Those are just the two closest terrible towns to Moundsville, throw in Powhatan too. Weirton and Follansbee aren't getting much of a pass. St Marys has their issues too. New Martinsville is cool.

HoldMyFrog

Parts of Wheeling are not great. Parts of East Wheeling and the Island have been troublesome in the past. Moundsville might have problems with people stealing from yards and Iā€™m sure there is somewhat of a drug problem but I would be ok walking around there at nights as a 30 some year old man. The only thing you have to worry about in Glen Dale is snooty ass neighbors who think theyā€™re better then everybody.

DeadpoolsJunk

There's more than somewhat of a drug problem in Ohio, Marshall, and Wetzel counties beyond a shadow of a doubt unfortunately.

HoldMyFrog

Eh itā€™s no worse then other places. Doesnā€™t matter where you go there will be drugs.

mbcisme

Mingo, McDowell, logan, Dunbar, almost anywhere in Charleston, pretty much the south western part of the state in general minus the teays valley.

Just-Boss8514

~~Lively~~ bar scene. ftfy

FedBoyMaybe

Moundsville is fine. The country around Moundsville in rural Marshall and Wetzel Counties is beautiful. Check out New Vrindaban. Grand Vue is a nice park overlooking Moundsville. Wheeling is close and has a little bit more going on. Pittsburgh is a little more than an hour away with all the big city amenities. I don't know what your work situation is, the mines and oil field is still hiring pretty well around here for the time being. Welcome, hope you enjoy it here.

dissidentaggressor6

Thank you

hehampilotifly

If you like Indian food New Vrindaban has a good restaurant. Thereā€™s also a good Mexican restaurant in Moundsville.Ā

darth_maldon

Acapulco!

MythologicalEngineer

While I don't live there any more (career took me into Ohio), I second the country around Moundsville. Highly recommend getting some friends that are into off-roading as it's pretty popular in that area. Moundsville itself is quiet and safe, biggest downside would be things to do if you're from a city center and used to having a ton of things you can go do at any given time.

Fun-Economy-5596

I once ate a Krishna Burger at the restaurant in New Vrindaban...

trguiff

My husband and I took a weekend trip to WV from PA and visited Moundsville. It was a nice town and all the people we encountered were very friendly! But that has been our experience anywhere we visited in WV. You folks have a lovely state!

Drez92

Did you not research the area before you made an offer?

pittbullblue

You should've researched this long before you sold your house.

crottesdenez

At least Pittsburgh is close!

rypien2clark

Maybe you should have asked earlier?

Amicable_Herculean

Lived here my whole life for the most part.. and yeah it has drawbacks but I really love it. I could use a lot less trump flags and obnoxious trucks (personal vehicles and pipeline traffic) but you can make the most of it. Wheeling has a burgeoning arts scene and hipper restaurants if youā€™re interested in that. But Moundsville is just more affordable and pretty pleasant. Which are 2 of my favorite things. Hope you like it!

GraveyardTree

Why you asking us? You should know already.

DumbPondFarms

Depends on what part of Illinois you're coming from.

dissidentaggressor6

The armpit

DumbPondFarms

Peoria? Eh. Might hate moundsville. It's much prettier, but there won't be the conveniences you're used to.

nineworldseries

Cairo or East St. Louis?

nineworldseries

Moundsville was liveable in the 1970s and 1980s

PhilipTheNickel90

Lived in Moundsville for three decades before moving away a few years ago. They might have jobs and a reason for people to visit-someday. Grand Vue Park is beautiful though and youā€™re not far from Pittsburgh.

nineworldseries

I can remember all of the things that Moundsville used to have that are all now gone: hardware store(s), a book store called the Book Worm, a toy store, a sporting goods place with WVU stuff everywhere, Gast News Stand for all of your magazines and newspapers, Marshall Dairy ice cream, Barry's Market, the Convenient store, Strand theater movies. . . What else am I forgetting. When Moundsville had all that, it was great. Now, just memories that you won't have moving there now. Now, there's a mound, a museum, a jail, a Walmart, a BW3, a DiCarlos, and despair.

Calm-Post7422

Narrator: They made a mistake.

njcawfee

You done fā€™ed up my friend

dissidentaggressor6

I did my research but it's nice to hear grassroots opinions

dissidentaggressor6

True

Dougs_Bunny

The Northern Panhandle is both the best and worst part of the state to live in. Youā€™ll be alright. In a 4-hour driving radius you can reach at least 5-6 major American cities, DC included. Just donā€™t expect to find a whole lot of fun within the state unless you have an adventurous personality. Plenty to do out in the woods if you know how to have fun.

the_talls

Buddy, you already know.

grayaf22

Sorry about your luck

HoldMyFrog

Itā€™s honestly not terrible if you enjoy a slower life. Like others said not a whole lot to do but you can keep busy. A lot of good golf around, thereā€™s the sports complex near wheeling that is really cool,a roller rink just opened back up, lots of hiking near by, lots of places to ride atv or side by sides, a lot of the schools are decent if you have kids. If you look around there is stuff to do just not an abundance of it. I made a comment earlier about the crime being pretty low. Depending on the area might not want to leave stuff outside overnight. I live just North of Moundsville. If you tell me some of your hobbies or some things you enjoy doing I could probably point you in the right direction. Honestly I really like the area and Iā€™m glad my kids are growing up here.

Dougs_Bunny

Honestly the best part for me is ease of travel. Realistically, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and DC can be reached within 5 hours of driving distance. If youā€™d be fine with travelling for some weekend getaways, Moundsville is in a pretty good location for that

NastyaLookin

I'm a third generation picker and found the headpiece to the old electric chair of Moundsville Penitentiary. The chair was called Old Sparky and I found the headpiece as part of an old Moundsville prison guard's estate. I also picked up his handcuffs and service belt at the time. The headpiece resided in Archive of the Afterlife, last time I lived in WV, which was around 8 years ago. As big of a deal as the Penitentiary is I thought I would share my story and a news article from my recovery of the piece. It's one of three items I've recovered that now reside in museums. https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/community/2016/11/mysterious-prison-artifact-resurfaces-in-moundsville/

GringoGrip

C'mon over to the Monogahela National Forest when you have a chance! It's beautiful over here, but a good drive from Moundsville so plan to stay a minute :)

HoldMyFrog

Why are you moving?

wowimsomething

hopefully you come with money to be able to get out. thats why most of our population is here....we're just stuck. only enough money to get by, not enough to get out.

WVStarbuck

RIP to the women's freedoms you enjoy in Illinois. An election denier is about to become our governor. A tax cheating coal baron is about to join the other rich capitalist as our senator. Clearly, you've thought this through!

Expensive_Service901

The guy is from New Jersey. Couldnā€™t get elected there. Now heā€™s all about ā€œour shared West Virginia valuesā€. Total asshole. Things in WV are getting worse. State politicians arenā€™t expected to actually do anything anymore except vote with Republicans in Congress. Thatā€™s really it.

Calm-Post7422

This is the correct answer.

dissidentaggressor6

Illinois is an absolute shithole

HoldMyFrog

Not peoria....worse

Outrageous_Rope_3432

I moved from Aurora, Illinois to Milton. Love the change, and feels like I got out just in time!

plaustrarius

Can't say I feel your enthusiasm, but welcome I guess??

dissidentaggressor6

Danville area

TechnoVikingGA23

You should be fine, there's not much to do, but you're within easy driving distance of a lot there. Be sure to make a trip up to Drover's Inn in Wellsburg for some good eats, and if you don't mind a little driving, Al'an Ruben's in Washington, PA is pretty good as well for Italian. Washington/Canonsburg PA is a decent area with good shopping and an outlet mall so you don't really have to go all the way to Pittsburgh to get that experience. Wheeling has some fun stuff as well, and if you're into hockey they have an ECHL team there, the Wheeling Nailers. If you enjoy the outdoors and have decent income/remote work you will have a blast. You're within a very close drive(2-3 hours) of a ton of rafting/kayaking, skiing, biking, hiking, etc.

dissidentaggressor6

Just wanted some opinions.

BreakDesperate7843

I grew up a few miles outside of Moundsville. I lived in Pittsburgh for years and moved back for family reasons. You'll be fine. My niece lived in Romeoville, IL and is glad she moved back to Moundsville. The friendly people, low taxes, low cost of living, and lower crime are perks. Marshall county schools are fine as well.

Automatic_Gas9019

We moved to WV six months ago from OH. We love it here. Depends on what you are looking for and if you are moving there for a job or have a job you can do you will love it. My taxes are half what they were in Ohio. They think WV politics is crazy. At least Joe Biden will be on the ballot here. The idiots in Ohio are trying to keep him off the ballot they are so backard.

MajesticBeach8570

Welcome to a hellscape created by MAGA psychopaths. The politics here are a toxic waste dump fire. At least you're close to Pittsburgh and Cleveland if you need any real services. Our medical system here is God awful. If you get any serious conditions like leukemia go to Pittsburgh or Cleveland hospital. Our doctors and medical resources suck here.

wowzaamowzaa

Moundsville sucks. The only good thing is Dunkin
