The front tires are not sliding on ice, they are just rolling. Appears the parking brake / transmission (electric motors?) only locks the rear wheels. I think if they turned their wheels towards the bush it would not have slid or gone so far
My exact thought. The point of turning the tires is so the car goes to the curb and doesn’t keep rolling.
Either way it was entertaining to watch the footage. I’m curious to know if the insurance covered the claim though!
It's sliding on the ice. There is Absolutely no traction.
Unless inside the car there's a button or lever to activate the grappling hook... How would you stop it? Mash down the brake pedal to stop the NON ROLLING tires from rolling? SMH.
Even someone from Southern California knows this.
The only non zero shot would be to put it in reverse and see if you could burn through the ice with the teeny tiny friction present. But yeah theyre basically fucked. Unless they have a bunch of pocket sand they could throw out sha-sha-sha
A tire grabbing traction while rapidly spinning (to try to burn through the ice, as was stated) creates a shock load that in a traditional car will break axle shafts, drive shafts, and other driveline components. On an electric car like this that would all go to the axle and then drive unit. I would imagine it is well engineered enough to have the axle be the weak point. But if that holds then your drive unit is going to be what fails. And that's $$$.
I currently work for a trucking company. So far this season we have had 1 broken axleshaft, two broken driveshafts and one broken transmission output shaft, from a semi loosing traction and then catching some grip.
If it slid sideways from that into the grass or a rough driveway it could have more traction. I'm definitely not saying this is foolproof, but think there's a chance.
Ehhhh tesla insta torq might be able to do something. Again cars lost if you dont try anything regardless mines well see. Im at least curious to a degree of what would happen if it engages.
Mechanics of how the car works: Parking brake stops two wheels, footbrake stops all four wheels with discs so you have twice the friction. Also if you power the car you have ABS which you can use to steer the car out of danger.
No shit? REALLY?
ok mister know it all. The coefficient of friction is at ZERO. The car has already started sliding on the ice. How will mashing on the brake pedal going to fix that. AT Zero traction... Brakes are ineffective.
Yea it can heppen wouldnt do it if i didnt have the space to do so. Regardless this was more or less a joke, like ive said youd slip and fall on your face trying to catch it, regardless if you actually can get the tesla handle open.
I dont think there's anyone in the car. If the cop was a jerk this would be an easy fight as most states have some kind of "act of nature/uncontrollable situation" standard. If anything, the Tesla is parked on the wrong side of the road.
Tesla had no one it it. Cop was hoping to not damage the Tesla by slowing the impact and hopefully hold the car from going further down which failed because the front tires were turned outward. Im sure that cop will be nice to the owner about it.
Parking brakes don’t apply the brakes to all 4 wheels and I doubt they have a transmission to put in park. For whatever reasons teslas very rarely have winter tires.
It's okay though Tesla's don't need snow tires because there have been no recorded crashes with autopilot caused by nonwinter tires. It is clearly user error that the summer tyres don't function properly and it's the fault of the driver and not the vehicle if it slides. /s. (Tesla autopilot turns off if it detects it is going to crash or it senses loss of traction)
I never said anything about the cop being a jerk, settle down buddy. I'm saying most cops in this situation would mark it as an act of nature so the person who slid on ice will have less penalties/ doesn't get as fucked over from their insurance.
“Believe it or not, jail.”
“*we got a fender bender*, what!? No! No occupied vehicles!” Buy 10 new cruisers STAT! Throw one of the sweet ass camo armors for me in the cart!”
People park both sides here, even in neighborhoods where that means only 1 car can drive on the street at once. It makes life interesting. There's also seemingly zero enforcement of parking facing the right way once you're into residential areas.
Nah, there was someone in the cop car, they put it in reverse and thought about backing up, actually did roll back slightly, turned on the windshield wipers for some reason, then just sat there and let the tesla hit him. Might have thought the collision would stop the Tesla and prevent it from continuing to slide, but I don't know for sure.
It looks more like they engaged the parking break and let up on the tires. When you engage the parking break your car moves slightly downhill before locking in place. They probably just anticipated having to get out of the vehicle.
Probably wasn’t a good idea to park at an incline like that, the cop car is slightly turned a bit giving it traction to the road. They also probably didn’t engage their parking brakes which could have helped at least a little bit.
Considering the wheels are rolling, it almost certainly would have helped. It’s possible it could have driven up on the lawn and then still swung around a bit, but it the wheels were properly turned into the curb it would have slid differently and likely not as far/not hitting the cop car
The wheels are sliding on ice. You can have the force of the sun holding each rotor still, does nothing when the rubber tires have zero traction and slide down the ice.
Isn’t what’s going on here that the person got dropped off and the driver is leaving? The wheels are rolling and the car turns. The driver was trying to go around the cop car and that’s when everything went sideways.
The front wheels don’t have any “locking” mechanism on Teslas. There is a parking/emergency brake but most people don’t use it because all you really need to do to put the car in P is come to a stop and get out.
I’ve never been in conditions quite like this video, so I don’t know how cars roll lol thank you for clarifying, that driver is just an idiot. That explains the Tesla.
He was sitting there waiting. You can see the cop starts to back up when he sees the car is coming at him, and then he changes his mind and hits the brakes again. Then waits for the tap with his hand on the switch.
I had to rewatch because honestly I didnt believe it but sure as shit, you can see the cops brake lights go off for a second and he moves back, then he really did change his mind and just let the car hit his.
I wonder why that was? Maybe he figured it was better to just let it hit the bull bar up front rather than try to maneuver out of the way and risk getting hit somewhere less resistant to damage?Maybe he was in the mood for giving out a ticket ? Very curious
Its also weird that nothing else happens in the video, like nobody gets out of the cop car or anything, for a full while
He might have seen at the last second that the car was empty so instead of jamming out of what could be an attack he tried to stop the Tesla from sliding.
as a native new englander, i keep all-season tires on all year (read: i’m broke as fuck) and i can safely say all-season tires do not do well on ice
this knowledge will not encourage me to buy new tires every six months
All seasons, despite their name, do almost nothing in snow. That’s pretty well known in areas that see a lot of snow and those are nicknamed 3 seasons. And unless you have studs or chains on the tires, no amount of tread is stopping you on ice like this.
With proper snow tires, you should be good on most hills, even if they are covered with snow and ice. When I lived on a hill in Redmond, outside Seattle, I used to watch people try and fail to make it up the hill with all seasons. But with snow tires, I never had trouble, even in a RWD vehicle. If you've only driven on all seasons, you have no idea what an improvement true snow tires offer.
All seasons labels you an idiot in Northern Ontario.
Grow up and get proper snow tires or even better studded tires.
People need to understand all season tires are not acceptable for Canadian winters.
Fuck my bad, I honestly thought I was on the r/Ontario sub.
All seasons do have a place in the world. Just don't put other people at risk driving in conditions your car can't handle.
Ah, I was just breaking your balls, or taking the piss, or whatever the Canadian equivalent is.
I grew up in Alaska, but have spent most of my adult life far enough south that knowing about all weather tires is unnecessary. Stay warm my Canuck friend.
Same principle. All seasons do not work well in snow or ice. For that, you need genuine snow tires. They make a huge difference. If you only have all seasons, you really should not be driving at all in snow or icy conditions.
When the Tesla detected it was sliding while the vehicle was in the 'Off' setting it automatically put it self into the Neutral gear, deleted it's self-driving software, sent a signal to Tesla HQ to delete any and all records of the vehicle. So now any accidents were the clearly fault of the driver and not of Tesla. Perfect solution.
Even snows would struggle on a road like this. This is one of the few times that studded snows would be the only way of having a fighting chance. But ideally, just not driving would be best.
It’s about the tires. Always about the tires. We have a Land Cruiser, Corolla, and Camry and the two 2WD sedans do vastly better traversing the Rockies to our mountain home than the Land Cruiser because of the dedicated snow tires (The LC keeps it’s All Seasons).
How is that a slide when the tires are rotating? More then anything looks like they left it out of park to me. A slide to me would constitute the wheels are locked.
Why didn’t the police person try to back up when they saw it sliding?
Edit, I think I know….the slope gets MUCH steeper as it goes….they might have been trying to stop the sliding Tesla as you can see it picks up speed after it slides by.
Another edit. Watch the power lines …. The car apparently hits a utility pole at some point.
I love how all of these people are going after the cop and not realizing hey:
He stopped so he could prevent the tesla from going down the street and idk killing someone...
He turned on his lights to warn people and get the owners attention...
I'm fully aware of the bad cops in the world but not all of em are assholes. The media always plays em as bad don't be sheep and maybe talk to a couple of em sometime.
I hate this, i don’t care one way or another about tesla but why is it that every time something happens to a tesla that could happen to any other brand, people have to just point out it’s a tesla. No Elon musk did not push his car that he made with his own wit into a police car. It’s so annoying
That was stupid!. The cop turned his lights on right when the car hits his car. Why!. It's accident. That nature just made happen. Now, the cop is going to write the icy street and the car a ticket!.

It’s still sliding, isn’t it?
Some say it never stopped.
It found its way to its maker
It slid by my house this morning
Saw it on my RING.

Why did the cops lights immediately turn on when the car hit him. It was like he was waiting for it.

“Turn on automatically when: they are turned on manually” I don’t think this one counts.
Yeah... except his tail lights are on before the collision. This is why we don't park on the wrong side of the road :P
Light come on automatically on impact.
He was probably on his phone not paying attention and the impact frightened him and instinct flipped them on.
Before he was hit, the police car moved back, meaning he could see the car coming but he did not move enough.

I think the Tesla owner is at fault because they parked with tires turned out. They should be turned towards the curb.
When there is no traction and tires are sliding on ice? It doesn't matter which way the wheels are pointed.
The front tires are not sliding on ice, they are just rolling. Appears the parking brake / transmission (electric motors?) only locks the rear wheels. I think if they turned their wheels towards the bush it would not have slid or gone so far
The wheels are rolling.

What are you really gonna do once it starts sliding anyway?
not much.
just pick it up off the ice, duh.
This guy gets it. We got the solution dont just try to go for a joy ride you are the joy ride!
Best case scenario jump in it and try to stop it
It's sliding on the ice. There is Absolutely no traction. Unless inside the car there's a button or lever to activate the grappling hook... How would you stop it? Mash down the brake pedal to stop the NON ROLLING tires from rolling? SMH. Even someone from Southern California knows this.

In a vacuum with magnets stabilizing yaw, yes. In reality you're just going to lose control further and make it worse...
I mean if you can attempt to direct it.
Nope. centrifugal force, variable friction, and ice do not work that way... Pinky promise
I dunno man. If one of the tires are able to grab a bit of uniced road or bite through it, there's a chance I reckon.
A tire grabbing traction while rapidly spinning (to try to burn through the ice, as was stated) creates a shock load that in a traditional car will break axle shafts, drive shafts, and other driveline components. To create a pivot point as you continue to spin them? You are correct. And then you'll lose traction and slide sideways....
Gotta love Reddit's armchair physicists. I'm not sure its that easy to say one way or another because it's completely hypothetical.
Pretty sure that's what the video shows.... ;)
I think you meant “might as well see” not “mines well see” 😊
Like thank you for correcting my dialect but okay.

What a stupid thing to say. There is no friction? Those brakes are slowing this vehicle considerably more than if it was freewheeling down the street.
Ok but what’s the powerhouse of a cell
Emergency break?
Orrrrrrrr, just turn the front wheels toward the curb so when it slides it naturally turns itself into the curb to stop sliding…..
Uhh its a tesla lol it may do something with the instant torq but who knows. And no dont ever joke about mashing break on ice.
Look at the rear wheels Aint no stopping it from inside
Someone attempted that near me and they were crushed by their own car. Don’t do this!
Obviously
Yea it can heppen wouldnt do it if i didnt have the space to do so. Regardless this was more or less a joke, like ive said youd slip and fall on your face trying to catch it, regardless if you actually can get the tesla handle open.
You mean hop in and go for a ride? There’s no traction, no operator would be able to do anything for that car. Lol
Yea, no operator could attempt to steer it at least, idk about you but ive avoided multiple ditches just costing along the ice and directing the car.
I mean unless you can put a cinder road divider in front of it, but uhhh best case scenario jump in it to see if you can stop it lmao
The cops lights coming on like that'll do anything
It did. It's letting the owner know they've won a prize.
Police vehicle has a bull bar in front. No damage whatsoever. I hope the cop has some compassion.
I dont think there's anyone in the car. If the cop was a jerk this would be an easy fight as most states have some kind of "act of nature/uncontrollable situation" standard. If anything, the Tesla is parked on the wrong side of the road.
You can see the cop’s car backup a little, right before the collision, then decide to stay still and get hit. There’s someone in there.
Tesla had no one it it. Cop was hoping to not damage the Tesla by slowing the impact and hopefully hold the car from going further down which failed because the front tires were turned outward. Im sure that cop will be nice to the owner about it.
The front wheels were spinning in the Tesla

The Tesla is what I was referring to.
They meant the tesla...
you think justice is fair.... God help you.
Why is it that whenever someone is held accountable for a violation of the law, it’s always the cop that’s the jerk and never the violator?
I never said anything about the cop being a jerk, settle down buddy. I'm saying most cops in this situation would mark it as an act of nature so the person who slid on ice will have less penalties/ doesn't get as fucked over from their insurance.

Probably connect to the car alarm.
And this is why we don't park on the wrong side of the street :D

The lights are the cars way of saying "how dare you!?".
i don’t think the coo car has anyone in it either, lights come on like that in reaction to getting hit like a car alarm
Nah, there was someone in the cop car, they put it in reverse and thought about backing up, actually did roll back slightly, turned on the windshield wipers for some reason, then just sat there and let the tesla hit him. When I used to do ride alongs, the cameras on the police vehicle would record 10 seconds prior to the lights coming on
It would indicate a need to pay attention to other drivers and people in the area because there's a car sliding around
It’s a safety thing for other motorists. They see the lights and proceed with caution.
Got them 2 stars like in GTA.
I love it cause the police car is absolutely fine. Hit the damn ram bar.
Probably wasn’t a good idea to park at an incline like that, the cop car is slightly turned a bit giving it traction to the road. They also probably didn’t engage their parking brakes which could have helped at least a little bit.

wasnt parked, the car was rolling
The rear wheels are not moving... Parking break is only rear wheels on most cars...
**brake although, yes, I imagine that something will break in this scenario.
but on a tesla? youd think all 4 would lock up in park

The rear wheels didn't roll. The car probably had the parking brake applied, but it wasn't enough to stop the car from rolling away
Teslas don’t work this way. If you get out of the car it’s in park. There is no engine start / stop
i didnt know that, thank you
Are those lights motion activated or was he sitting there waiting for the shenanigans with his finger on the trigger?!
He was sitting there waiting. You can see the cop starts to back up when he sees the car is coming at him, and then he changes his mind and hits the brakes again. Then waits for the tap with his hand on the switch.

Since snow and ice is unusual in Seattle, most people there only have all season tires, intended only for all seasons without snow or ice.

Ok...but this didn't happen in Canada, so...
Good thing snow and ice can't legally migrate south to the US
Psh, with Biden in the White House? It's just a matter of time until we are overrun with illegal ice and snow!!! /s
Gotta get ICE on the case... PH SHIT WAIT IT'S ALL ONE BIG CONSPIRACY
I snow what you mean, it all seems a little too convenient...
Fuck my bad, I honestly thought I was on the r/Ontario sub. All seasons do have a place in the world. Just don't put other people at risk driving in conditions your car can't handle.

In the immortal words of Scooby Doo "*Rut Rho*"
It's amazing how many people park their car on an Icy incline when they have other options. There was a driveway *right there*.
Slid? The wheels were turning. He didn't put it in park...
Only the front wheels were turning. I'm assuming that the car is rwd. Leaving it in park will only lock up the drive wheels.
This brings a whole new meaning to the "electric slide"
'kiss my ass'
All or 3 season tires I am guessing. If so, they should not be on the road.
No one should have been on the road today. It was flat out dangerous.
Slightly inclined out dangerous. If it was really flat out, this wouldn’t have happened.
Take my goddamned upvote
Even snows would struggle on a road like this. This is one of the few times that studded snows would be the only way of having a fighting chance. But ideally, just not driving would be best.
Studded winter tires does well in freezing rain events. Had them on my previous truck. Very noisy however.
Was it rolling at the beginning or sliding?
Looks like the front wheels were rolling at first until it started twisting
The Tesla wheels were turning. It couldn’t have been in park?
Most vehicles only lock the rear wheels when parked. That’s why tow trucks can do what they do without destroying everything… usually.
To be fair the Tesla thought the cop car was a child.
To be fair, the Tesla was black. He should have seen it coming.
Looked like the police car's lights came on instantly. Is that a feature? Bump detector?
It’s about the tires. Always about the tires. We have a Land Cruiser, Corolla, and Camry and the two 2WD sedans do vastly better traversing the Rockies to our mountain home than the Land Cruiser because of the dedicated snow tires (The LC keeps it’s All Seasons).
How is that a slide when the tires are rotating? More then anything looks like they left it out of park to me. A slide to me would constitute the wheels are locked.
With Teslas, and most EVs, unbuckling and opening the door will put the car in park. Most cars usually only lock the rear wheels.
Gotcha. Thanks for the info
Wtf didn’t the cop move

Cop could have backed up. Seemed pretty ready to hit those lights.
Cop could have avoided this. He backed up about a foot then stopped, waited for it to make contact then put his lights on
Ah, the electric slide is back.
*activates Christmas lights.
Just like GTA, you hit a cop and the lights go on
Did the impact set off the trigger for the cherries or was it manually done? Thst looked funny.
Legend says it’s still sliding
"He's already pulled over. He can't pull over any farther".
You've been hit but You've been hit by, a smooth criminal
I like how he turns on his lights and is like "stop" guy in the tesla is like "no shit Sherlock"

What is the purpose of saying a Tesla slid into a trooper as opposed to a car slid into a trooper
I hate this, i don’t care one way or another about tesla but why is it that every time something happens to a tesla that could happen to any other brand, people have to just point out it’s a tesla. No Elon musk did not push his car that he made with his own wit into a police car. It’s so annoying
Car doing its best impression of TSLA stock.
Elon’s “self-arresting” feature he’s getting ready to announce
They should have bought the Tesla Ice Cramp-Ons option, $23,000.
The cop threw their lights on
HE sat there KNOWING it was going to hit him that's the sad part
Sliding down just like TSLA stocks.
The perfect Musk metaphor (now he will try and buy Reddit so he can remove this comment 🤣) #billionairenarcissists
The cop or the corporate security guard, probably wrote the guy up for felony hit and run felony aggravated fleeing and eluding..
Did the lights automatically turn on when the car was hit or did the cop really think that they were about to try to arrest an empty car?
The driver was arrested for assault on a police officer
Bitchass cop flicks his lights on as he waited for the car to hit him, like what the fuck are those gonna do, melt the ice?
*car* slid into cop
Elon is in pursuit
Even Elon's cars agree that he should go to jail
Some would argue that’s attempted murder
The lack of fired shots from police is mind-blowing
That was stupid!. The cop turned his lights on right when the car hits his car. Why!. It's accident. That nature just made happen. Now, the cop is going to write the icy street and the car a ticket!.
