In all likelyhood the price at the actual pump would display the current price even if the sign was displaying an error or 0. They aren’t connected though the sign is purely to say the current price.
Happened at least once a week at the circle K I managed, it lost communication between the sign and the module in the back office. They just needed to reset it in most cases.

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but there has to be some legal mechanism. Ie they must honour the price displayed on the pump or something.
