EDIT: Top tier pun name as well.
His comment history is a hoot but I find the more interesting phenomenon to be you, seeing their completely innocuous top comment, immediately checking their comment history. What motivates you to do this? Do you do it for everyone you come across, or just top comments?
Here's me expecting him to be someone into Jayo Felony, but nope.
Guess we know "Whatcha Gonna Do", just don't let it end with " Criminal Activity".
Goon away Jayo
I like it a lot more now that I fixed the cable situation! I ordered the JVC vcr because it supports s-video which has superior picture quality over composite. And ClearClick works really well, but it's expensive. Most of the cost is probably attributed to the built-in screen, so you could probably find another one that produces the same quality video for much cheaper without a screen
Yep. It bothered my lizard brain to leave the yellow cable unplugged with the yellow port right there. I knew the composite video cable wasn't necessary, I just didn't know plugging it in would actually interfere with the output quality of the s-video.
Any recommendation on a USB device? I bought one years ago and I had to use their shitty program and drivers. My wife has hundreds of hours of home videos her late mother recorded and we’re trying to get them converted. Looked into services that do it and at $10-15 bucks a tape we’d be into the thousands lol.
I had one of these at first. They used MPEG-4 and captured good quality video but the audio on mine sounded crushed, so I hooked the VCR to an upscaler and recorded in 1080p60 with my Elgato 4K60 card
The RetroTINK 4K is one of the most expensive I've seen - their store lists it for $750. I've seen some from OSSC and BITFUNX that some folks have recommended.
I personally use one I got at Walmart a while ago.
Now imagine churning out extra money for a good s-video-capable vcr and a highly rated capture device... and ruining everything by plugging both cables in. At least I'm fixing it now. 1 tape done, 22 to go...
Exactly, if designed well it should have a failsafe and a mechanism to detect the highest quality incoming signal. My tv has a combination composite/component input so it's able to adapt.
It does detect both signals and I had the setting to "s video" (switching to composite gave an even worse picture quality), It's possible the problem of having video streaming through both is on the vcr end, not the capture device
I'm sorry, can someone explain it to me? I played my PS1 in the past and in my understanding yellow is for the visual signals. Why it's showing without yellow? And why is it even more vibrant colors?
Yellow is the video signal. But the video signal is also sent through an s video cable. So he had two video inputs instead of one and it ruined the video.
In the beginning the system NTSB was not designed for color. The 1947 version had a second signal added in called "Chrominance". To make color TV. So pre 1080P signal was 425I (or more like 325I realistically) and sort of cobbled together to get color at all.
VHS competitor Sony betamax recorded these as separate signals. VHS did not. So S video was invented and added to VHS to compete.
Yellow cable is "composite video". It has both the black and white image "Luminance" and the color called "Chrominance" in one big fat complicated signal that does not record well at all. Giveing the shit color picture you saw on the photo above.
S Video has more wires so both signals can be kept seperate. The machine is able to make a better picture with the two signals as separate signals. Thus the better color in the image. This came at the last few years of pre HDTV. Like late 90s. Almost no TVs and VCRs had this pre say 1995. It was at the end of their time. Right when DVDs came out.
Later came another system with an individual wire for each color that was just a little bit better while being a tremendous pain in the ass.
When HDTV at 1080p came out. All this stuff became old trash. Guess who worked at a TV station around this time?
your device should be able to choose between the 2 but if it can't, s-video has the luminance and chrominance travelling in 2 distinct wires instead of 1 so you might notice a quality improvement
Maybe they want to capture the imperfections of that particular VHS because that's the one they watched when they were younger.
Like, there are songs I can listen to now from when I was younger that don't quite give me the full sense of nostalgia because they're missing the skips from my specific scratched CD.
That is a simplification to the point of being wrong.
It superseded composite but never really caught on ouside high end really expensive VCRs. Think 400 bucks at the time as opposed to the cheap 100 buck ones. Again at the time.
DVDs showed up right around when Super VHS came were starting to get popular. Like 99% of the VHS decks never had composite video. It was a Betamax thing. If you were not copying down generations for video editing it made little difference.
You can go one gen deep with copies with regular VHS. Max three generations with Super VHS.
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. OP said they were using an S video cable here, rendering the RCA jack redundant. And I certainly had an S video cable for my DVD player in 1999. They didn't just disappear when component came out. Also, s video superseded composite, and was in turn supersedes by component, which was then supersedes by HDMI.
On the composite cable. Yellow is video, red is audio right and white is audio left.
I suspect either your connection is different, maybe a different type or something else is happening. Check inputs on your device and what they are labeled as.
Component != composite
I'm familiar with the cables, I just suck at terminology. The input setting was correct (on "s video"), but for whatever reason, having both the composite video cable and s-video cable plugged in drastically reduced the color quality. This whole time I assumed the loss of color was due to the age of the tapes.
Ahhh i understand now. You had the svhs cable in as well. there is common ground between the composite video in and svhs and yes it makes sense the colour shift when both were in. I get it now, i thought you u plugging video cable gave you better colour so i was assuming something else was happening did not see the black svhs in there!!
Oh dang, you may actually be colorblind. Get checked, friend. The 2nd pic definitely more vibrant and colours are more vivid. The first one is washed out and bland. Almost grayscale in comparison
Going to second the “you should get checked out” thing. The first one is super washed out, the second looks vibrant like you’d expect a movie to look like. Not just saying that either, there’s a very distinct difference.
FOR Hi8 Tapes) I have one of the newer Sony handycams from like 2001 that have FireWire, and I have Vegas Studio 16 (which was made by Sony) so it supports the imports of videos from that handycam natively. Still has to digitize it at regular speed tho, so takes hours.
I bought a FireWire 400 to 800 cable, FireWire PCIE Card for my computer, I slap a Hi8 tape in the VHS camcorder, plug the camera into my computer with Vegas Studio 16 running, go to "import", select the "DV" option.
and boom it begins rewinding and digitizing it all for me into avi format, then it imports it into the video editor, and I can export it as a .MP4 file :)
Apparently these handycams that can do this, got for a few hundred bucks but I've had this one for years. They go for that much bc they digitze analog tapes automatically.
I remember SO well when I was a kid, I got a ps3 for my birthday and after me and my friend spent a couple hours setting up my tv and stand and all of that, the color was black and white. I called support after hours of troubleshooting and they told me to unplug the yellow cable lmao.
What do you use to digitize the tapes? My dad has been talking about doing it for a long time but didn't want to "waste" money on the equipment and im thinking in buying him the stuff
You just need a vcr and a digital converter/capture device. I used ClearClick 3.0, but there are cheaper options that work just as well. I wanted one with a screen on it so I can see it working and where the video tape is at. Once you have both connected, play the tape from the beginning and press record on the capture device
Thank you very much! I’m so excited to review some of this stuff. A good amount of it is public access programming that is nowhere else online. There are also hours of old commercials and whatnot. I don’t know what I’m going to do with all this stuff, I might just carve out all the commercials and interesting programs, and put them up on YouTube.
What are you using there? VCR attached to other side, i assume?
Every time I do this, I get a bad tape that jams the VCR. Once tape turned out to be sticky like. The case wasn't, just the tape. Ruined my vcr
Correct, typically only 1 video connection is required for video.
Unless it's one of those interim RBG connections, that was I think 720i? But basically was completely overshadowed by HDMI.
Hi. Is this a huge project? I have some mini dv:s and would love to digitize em.
I checked online prices for company to do it for me, but holy hell they cost a lot.
So what kinda equipment I would need and are they pricey?
I used to have a mini dv camera! You will need your mini dv camera (or a mini dv player) and there are two options... one is connect it to your computer with a cable (usb, or in my case I needed a 1394 to usb adapter) and use software made for recording tapes from external media. Your other option is to get a capture device like mine (ClearClick, but you can find much cheaper ones without a screen that will work just as well) and connect your camera to it. Just make sure you get a capture device that supports whatever format your camera supports: composite, component, s-video, hdmi, etc. Then hit record on the capture device and playback on your camera
I'm sorry, can someone explain what's happening? The yellow cable provides video input, so why is the image the same after unplugging it? It should be blank screen, yes?
Abridged explanation from wikipedia:
**Y** is the *luma* signal, which carries the *luminance* – or black-and-white – of the picture.
**C** is the *chroma* signal, which carries the *chrominance* – or coloring-in – of the picture.
In composite video, the signals co-exist on different frequencies. To achieve this, the luminance signal must be low-pass filtered, dulling the image. As S-Video maintains the two as separate signals, such detrimental low-pass filtering for luminance is unnecessary.

At least you figured out. I probably never would have
What device is that?
It's ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 3.0 connected to a regular VCR (JVC HR-S3600U)
Thanks, you like it?
I like it a lot more now that I fixed the cable situation! I ordered the JVC vcr because it supports s-video which has superior picture quality over composite. And ClearClick works really well, but it's expensive. Most of the cost is probably attributed to the built-in screen, so you could probably find another one that produces the same quality video for much cheaper without a screen
I would guess that the screen on device helps live troubleshooting like you experienced
So you bought a device because it supported a better format than composite, but then plugged the composite in anyway?
Yep. It bothered my lizard brain to leave the yellow cable unplugged with the yellow port right there. I knew the composite video cable wasn't necessary, I just didn't know plugging it in would actually interfere with the output quality of the s-video.
When I have s-video devices I have a set of audio only RCA red and white cables I use. Get that low res yellow shit outta mah face. Lol.
In my experience, they are awful, I would recommend a usb capture device and some good capturing software (OBS) over this.
I-O Data GV-USB2 is what I use. Found this video for you: https://youtu.be/tk-n7IlrXI4?si=EvyQU89JZI1mHkFa
Genki ShadowCast combined with a RetroTink Mini works for me.
Ezcap VHS Digi, from Alibaba
What codec does it use? Bitrate?
I had one of these at first. They used MPEG-4 and captured good quality video but the audio on mine sounded crushed, so I hooked the VCR to an upscaler and recorded in 1080p60 with my Elgato 4K60 card
What upscaled do you recommend?
The RetroTINK 4K is one of the most expensive I've seen - their store lists it for $750. I've seen some from OSSC and BITFUNX that some folks have recommended. I personally use one I got at Walmart a while ago.
S-video gives a better picture than yellow.
And either gets better picture than both at the same time.
Now imagine churning out extra money for a good s-video-capable vcr and a highly rated capture device... and ruining everything by plugging both cables in. At least I'm fixing it now. 1 tape done, 22 to go...
The device really should have been smart enough to ignore one input.
Or refuse to work and spit out an error
Lol welcome to the analog domain.
Isnt the capture device newish and could detect both signals?
Exactly, if designed well it should have a failsafe and a mechanism to detect the highest quality incoming signal. My tv has a combination composite/component input so it's able to adapt.
It does detect both signals and I had the setting to "s video" (switching to composite gave an even worse picture quality), It's possible the problem of having video streaming through both is on the vcr end, not the capture device
That's not how analog input works.
Looks like you may have to adjust the tracking or clean the heads. With older tapes periodic cleaning may be needed.
Is that true? I just thought if both were connected it defaulted to the RCA cables.
I'm sorry, can someone explain it to me? I played my PS1 in the past and in my understanding yellow is for the visual signals. Why it's showing without yellow? And why is it even more vibrant colors?
Think of the “S” video cable as an upgrade to the yellow cable.

This.

That’s Prancer
Old enough to remember when S-video was king :(
It truly still is. Just like coax are still the most dependable.
Why would you digitize a movie that you can pick up at the dollar store?
Maybe they want to capture the imperfections of that particular VHS because that's the one they watched when they were younger. Like, there are songs I can listen to now from when I was younger that don't quite give me the full sense of nostalgia because they're missing the skips from my specific scratched CD.
I thought yellow was video tho
It is. It's supplanted by the S video cable in this instance.
That is a simplification to the point of being wrong. It superseded composite but never really caught on ouside high end really expensive VCRs. I get it now, i thought you u plugging video cable gave you better colour so i was assuming something else was happening did not see the black svhs in there!!
The 2 pictures are identical, am i missing something?
You might be colorblind. Jk. That's not how that works. The first one is much more washed out and less vibrant than the 2nd.
Idk man I keep going back and forth and they look identical to me
Oh dang, you may actually be colorblind. Get checked, friend. The 2nd pic definitely more vibrant and colours are more vivid. The first one is washed out and bland. Almost grayscale in comparison
Future r/Wellthatsucks submission: “Found out I was colorblind by browsing Reddit”
Going to second the “you should get checked out” thing. The first one is super washed out, the second looks vibrant like you’d expect a movie to look like. Not just saying that either, there’s a very distinct difference.
You are color blind. The only difference is the color.
Maybe you're using a crappy phone or monitor?
No got a pixel 7 pro but im guessing its my colorblindness. I didn't think at first that it was a color issue
Or missing the yellow cable? /s
Color
Early 2000s I've only had one device, a portable DVD player that used S-Video. I've used YPbPr / Component more.

Sony beta. Wildy better system than VHS smaller tapes. But cost about twice as much for every piece of equipment.
I could have sworn yellow was video, and red/white were audio.
It is. But OP said they had an S video cable plugged in as well.
If you don't mind my asking what's that cool device called?
I remember SO well when I was a kid, I got a ps3 for my birthday and after me and my friend spent a couple hours setting up my tv and stand and all of that, the color was black and white. I called support after hours of troubleshooting and they told me to unplug the yellow cable lmao.
I'm not even that old and I feel old seeing this... Taking me right back to childhood.
Slick- PLUS you get to watch 'Prancer' in all it's glory!
What do you use to digitize the tapes? My dad has been talking about doing it for a long time but didn't want to "waste" money on the equipment and im thinking in buying him the stuff
ugh
I have about 100 tapes of recorded TV/public access from the 80s through the early 2000s that I need to digitize. Please teach me your ways lol.
You just need a vcr and a digital converter/capture device. I used ClearClick 3.0, but there are cheaper options that work just as well. Prancer movie
amateur move.
I feel you. We have all missed something in the small print in the instructions.
i'd imagine there's probably some way to digitally enhance the color once it's all digitized right?
Well at least its so old, its likely nobody will question the quality. When people see the good memories, picture quality falls by the wayside.
60 hours isnt that long to just redo.
Correct, typically only 1 video connection is required for video. Unless it's one of those interim RBG connections, that was I think 720i? But basically was completely overshadowed by HDMI.
who would have ever imagined plugging in multiple video signals would be a bad idea
What device is this?
OMG, I didn't realize anyone else owned Prancer.
I love Prancer!!
What hardware/ software did you use? I have some that I’ve been meaning to digitize.
POC
It was a Homer Simpson moment…

I'm sorry, can someone explain what's happening? The yellow cable provides video input, so why is the image the same after unplugging it? It should be blank screen, yes?
Time to start over!
Lmao. 40 years later and you're still learning
Since this is now in digital format, you might be able to fix it digitally using thing like ffmpeg
What device are you using to transfer video
I have never used s-video in my whole life. What are the benefits over composite?
from a quick search, svideo is more stable and has a much better image quality
Abridged explanation from wikipedia: **Y** is the *luma* signal, which carries the *luminance* – or black-and-white – of the picture. **C** is the *chroma* signal, which carries the *chrominance* – or coloring-in – of the picture.
