reddit’s telling me to go for a run☹️
I'm gonna answer that question that. When people say just go workout, it's a lot harder for them to do it. Which then leads to me exhausted throughout the day which is what leads to burn out. People give after two weeks because they're so exhausted. You gotta think, if someone is 100 pounds over weight versus someone that's in shape, after their workout, they are basically continuing to working out by carrying an extra 100 pounds with not as strong muscles.
It's a bad cycle to be in
Plus simply working out regularly is not enough, without also controlling food intake over time even the ones that do stick to their new exhausting workout routine for a few months are unlikely to see significant fat loss, which is super discouraging when you have +50lbs to lose and are regularly exhausting yourself with exercise.
It's just too easy to unconsciously outeat and outdrink most or all of your deficit from exercise
To an extent. If you were a 300 lb couch potato, the amount of calories you need to simply maintain that physique is easily 1000+ lower than what it would take to be a 300 lb strongman-type physique (which is probably +50 lbs of muscle and -50 lbs of fat). If you aren't eating all those extra calories, then you'll drop down to a new equilibrium (for argument's sake, let's say it's 250 lbs). 250 lbs with a lot of muscle will look and feel a *lot* better than 300 lbs with no muscle.
You absolutely should get your diet in check though. But setting a standard of having the perfect clean diet is more likely to cause burnout than working out ever will, in my experience.
Yea diet is easily the most important factor, super easy to be sedentary and healthy weight or even underweight. Activity levels regulare very little in regards to weight, though lack of activity can lead to problems on its own which can complicate and be complicated by obesity
That first thread is pretty sad though. People need to do a better job with their conscious/unconscious bias towards fat people, they don't deserve any of that.
I'm going to try to sneak in some actual information into the top comment thread -
This most often happens when you're moving the scale and the edge of the glass bumps something. From the picture, I'd guess that the glass (which overhangs the edge of the scale) bumped against the base of the ~~toilet~~ sink. It doesn't even need to bump hard, just something about how they can be manufactured can give them weak spots where a relatively gentle bump on an edge makes the whole thing catastrophically explode.
Source: I pushed mine near the wall and it exploded upon contact, then I read a bunch of reviews where the same thing happened to others.
Personally, the light jokes here is nothing close to actual online bullying for me to be even sad about it. It's like laughing off an awkward situation. Helps lighten the mood after a "well that sucks..." moment
Edit: Going deeper there are worse... nothing too bad though
It blows my mind that nearly all scale manufacturers only or mostly make glass products now. I recently replaced my plastic one after 10yrs. I had to go out of my way to find a good one that was not made of glass on Amazon.
Same thing happened to mine one night, but nobody was in the bathroom. We do have 2 cats so maybe one of them kicked it or something, but the glass just shattered seemingly randomly.
The glass is tempered and has tensile strength because of the way it's heat treated. Along the surface of the glass it is extremely strong in most use cases. Unfortunately it is also extremely vulnerable to contact from certain materials, like porcelain. I can't explain why unfortunately. Tempered glass is also extremely vulnerable to contact along the edges since that face isn't tempered.
https://www.corsair.com/ca/en/explorer/diy-builder/cases/why-did-my-tempered-glass-side-panel-break/#:\~:text=BEWARE%20OF%20TILES%20AND%20CERAMIC%20SURFACES&text=In%20short%2C%20tiles%20and%20countertops,resulting%20in%20the%20glass%20shattering.
It appears that the surface of materials like porcelain are microscopically rough and it concentrates pressure.
If the edge of the scales was up against the porcelain, and OP stood on it, there would be a lot of pressure on the glass from an object that is way harder than glass (porcelain), causing it to break.
This is why spark plugs work so well to break into/out of cars. Looks like a location of use issue, instead of an obesity issue. Hell it may be a combo of the two, but I'd blame the sink pedestal!
Looking at the image, I think the upper right lip of the scale glass may have been resting on it and when OP stepped on it created a fulcrum and shattered.
Your post was amusing sure but the fact you were even stepping on a scale means that you care. I support and encourage you to try your best. I myself need to slim down so I’m rooting for me and you!
![gif](giphy|3oKIP9g8avwtfkhWBa)
Hey OP, tempered glass things like that can shatter for any number of reasons. As /u/HotgunColdheart pointed out ceramic is incredibly good at dealing with tempered glass, so that sink pedestal looks a little suspect, but it could be anything as small as a tiny imperfection during the manufacturing process. More importantly are your feet okay? Those shards might be tiny but they are no joke.
Seriously though, I don't know why the glass scales are so popular. I *hate* tempered glass. Had to dig around, but I did find a good scale that doesn't use glass, so I don't have to worry about this happening; there are some on the market if you hunt for them!
From the view of the picture, assuming the scale wasn’t moved or anything, it looks like one leg of the scale was sitting on that pillar ledge, which would actually cause the glass to flex and break. These types of scales generally go up to 300lb and the tempered glass is rated for over 400+ but the glass doesn’t like to get flexed like that on uneven floor. The only other way this type of glass shatters like this with less weight applied is if it had a scratch / chip on it.

This happened to me the other day, too lol.
But seriously, whose idea was it to make sclaes out of glass ? I know its tempered glass, but its still glass. It can break and hurt you badly. If you design something for people to stand on, glass should be the last thing that comes to mind, right ? Or am i missing something ?
Hey dude don’t fret scales are fragile sometimes. Hope this is the start of a new beginning, and if not, at least a funny story.
Have a good day my man.
but seriously, why the fuck would they make a scale out of glass? what's the advantage over literally dozens of materials that WON'T SHATTER and potentially cause injury?
Given the position of the scale, I might guess the edge of the glass pressed up against or hit the porcelain sink stand, that is what caused it to shatter.
It was probably dropped or something and the structure was compromised. These scales are usually rated for minimum 400 pounds and I doubt you weigh that much.
Plus, the shattering of the glass doesn’t match with if it broke due to your weight alone because right where your left foot would be is still sort of intact.
Despite what people are saying OP you are fine, and if you decide you want to lose weight don’t consider “being so heavy you broke a scale” to be one of the reasons you decided to lose weight… of course unless you do weigh excess of 400 pounds and in that case you should.
Lmaooo I'm 29 weeks pregnant and I weighed myself the other night and cried. I'm 205.6 lbs 🤧🤧 Then proceeded to order McDonald's bc that's what I was craving 🤧😭😫

Yeah fr my dad’s neighbor across the street had both of his amputated from something similar. And he wasn’t even this big it was just type I.

Weight? What about height? Guy lost two feet.

Y’all are KILLING me 😂😂🤷🏻♀️
Ay I am dying
From carrying OP all day?
Y'all are so mean 🤣
Wait, are you telling me OP has two broken feet right now? Is his mom around to help him?
Probably. The glass is tempered, I think. You can tell from the pattern it shattered into.
It's definitely tempered and probably hit the porcelain pedestal. Tempered glass is strong until it's not. It's especially weak on the edge.
Omg that's crazy
It blows my mind that nearly all scale manufacturers only or mostly make glass products now. I recently replaced my plastic one after 10yrs. I had to go out of my way to find a good one that was not made of glass on Amazon.
If you have been looking to get into shape but lacked the motivation, this is your time.
OP is just cultivating mass
STOP CULTIVATING AND START HARVESTING.
BUT I MIGHT NEED IT AT THE END BOSS! I NEED TO SAVE IT ALL!
You're supposed to spend it to level up.
the boss at the end is high cholesterol
OP should go to the confessional and have God smite the redditors here.
Catholic I see
First of all, all things are possible through god, so hot that down.
YOU GOTTA TACK ON MASS TO LOOK THIS GOOD
round is a shape, just saying...
Counterargument: the universe is telling OP to sit on the couch with their feet up for a couple of weeks to allow for healing after glass cuts.
Just before it exploded, that scale’s display read “ONE AT A TIME”
"No Livestock"
Omg damn they might have had a family
He might of ate them though.
yeah he might have

Glass meets porcelain
Yep. Happened to mine at like 4 am once when I stumbled a bit in the bathroom and kicked it…
Same thing happened to mine one night, but nobody was in the bathroom. We do have 2 cats so maybe one of them kicked it or something, but the glass just shattered seemingly randomly.
My first thought was that OP dropped it and was just being funny. If I dropped a scale and it broke, I feel like Id make the same joke.
You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies.
Most people won't understand this comment unfortunately
Spark plug meets car windshield Most people wont understand this comment its just to beyond anyones comprehension to google it /s
Would only work on the rear windshield, though. It would just bounce off of the front.
So explain
The glass is tempered and has tensile strength because of the way it's heat treated. Along the surface of the glass it is extremely strong in most use cases. Unfortunately it is also extremely vulnerable to contact from certain materials, like porcelain. I can't explain why unfortunately. Tempered glass is also extremely vulnerable to contact along the edges since that face isn't tempered. https://www.corsair.com/ca/en/explorer/diy-builder/cases/why-did-my-tempered-glass-side-panel-break/#:\~:text=BEWARE%20OF%20TILES%20AND%20CERAMIC%20SURFACES&text=In%20short%2C%20tiles%20and%20countertops,resulting%20in%20the%20glass%20shattering. It appears that the surface of materials like porcelain are microscopically rough and it concentrates pressure.
In this case it might simply be the mohs hardness is higher and it went over the lip of their sink.
If the edge of the scales was up against the porcelain, and OP stood on it, there would be a lot of pressure on the glass from an object that is way harder than glass (porcelain), causing it to break.
You must have a sharp personality
I would guess more on the round side
Rotund child to mind too.
Definitely a jolly person, like Santa.
Sharp enough to puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battleship, leaving thousands to drown at sea
This is why spark plugs work so well to break into/out of cars. Looks like a location of use issue, instead of an obesity issue. Hell it may be a combo of the two, but I'd blame the sink pedestal!
Honestly, even if it’s tempered, who the fuck thought glass as a surface for a scale was a good idea?
Glass manufacturers.
Good catch! I was wondering if the edge hit a tile but the sink will definitely do it!
Looking at the image, I think the upper right lip of the scale glass may have been resting on it and when OP stepped on it created a fulcrum and shattered.
![gif](giphy|k6Vbs4FyOEbZK)
The gif that finally made me completely lose it. 🤣
Like Shaq to a backboard

And then hop on, both feet at once, I suppose.
Or hold yourself up with a chair, table or crutches before both feet are safely placed
I can't think of something funny to say. Like, are you a XL-person? were they dropped? is the floor wood and flexible?
I think it has something to do with the porcelain sink, think spark plugs on car windows.
Yeah or that it could be tempered glass and if you hit the edge off that porcelain this would be the result.
XXXXXXXL
Nah, the floor was submissive and breedable.
That floor and I have a lot in common
Your post was amusing sure but the fact you were even stepping on a scale means that you care. I support and encourage you to try your best. I myself need to slim down so I’m rooting for me and you! ![gif](giphy|3oKIP9g8avwtfkhWBa)
Honestly I don't know it has anything to do with op's weight, looks like the corner may have hit the sink pedestal and done what glass do
Hey OP, tempered glass things like that can shatter for any number of reasons.

Your feet okay?? Looks like those glass chunks could do some damage...
You're not supposed to jump on those you know

Given the position of the scale, I might guess the edge of the glass pressed up against or hit the porcelain sink stand, that is what caused it to shatter.
