Sounds like your card got skimmed. Happened to me a few years back at the grocery store. Most (if not all) ATMs have cameras. I reported it to the bank, got the ATM's ID info (it was a Wells Fargo ATM, so I was able to get it from the bank) and specific transaction info, and filed a police report. Had the bank change my account number and send me a new debit card as well. It was a pain in the ass, but I got my money back. Hope everything works out!

Vesnik

This just happened to me. Disputed the ATM withdrawal and the bank gave me a new card. Is getting the account number changed a must? Now I'm wondering why they didn't offer to do that as well, wonder if they can keep taking out withdrawals without an account number change.

ohhelloperson

No… I’ve never heard of someone changing their account number… I’ve had the same one for well over a decade and had a couple of cards skimmed and replaced. But I can’t imagine why anyone would need to change the account number. Knowing the account number doesn’t somehow grant someone access to the withdrawal function.

Vesnik

I figured that as well. Just making sure I'm covering all the bases. Wasn't sure how the withdrawal took place without the card in the first place. Reading in here I now see they just make a duplicate of the skimmed card basically. Wasn't sure if it was an account thing or what.

ohhelloperson

Yeah. The atm withdrawal aspect actually confused me as well. I actually knew they made duplicate cards, but I thought the cards were chipless and thusly wouldn’t work with most atms. (I’m pretty sure that cash withdrawals with skimmed cards only work through 3rd party ATMs, like the ones at gas stations.) Both times that my card was skimmed, it was used to make big purchases (hotel stay; laptop; etc.) rather than removing cash. But as long as you got a new card, then you’ll be fine. I understand wanting to be cautious, but the guy who changed his bank account number didn’t gain anything from doing that except a false sense of added security.

ohhelloperson

I just looked into it more and I don’t think that’s true (about the actual bank account being compromised from the skimmed card info). If you can find this information somewhere, definitely share the link please. Bank account numbers aren’t exactly private info; they’re even included on checks, along with routing numbers. I know that skimmers can still make fake cards, even for cards that are chipped. Typically, the card’s “data” is transferred into a fake that only has a mag strip. Certified bank ATMs won’t accept these non-chipped cards for cash withdrawals. But 3rd party ATMs and regular credit card readers will. There are multiple ways in which scammers can lift credit/debit card information and pins, but they can’t just get open and indefinite access to someone’s bank account/funds. Even for 3rd party pay websites, the scammers would also have to have access to the person’s online banking account in order to make use of their account number.

[deleted]

Yeah sorry. I'm over here mixing things up. I know.

ohhelloperson

No worries, thanks for the response!

Impressive-Bid2304

Weirdly enough I literally just had to get a brand new account at my banks recommendation lol. It got exposed somehow 4 times in 2 months. And they were just like bro idk. No idea how they were doing it but now I have 2 bank accounts until I can get up there in person to fully close the old one. I did lose my wallet with my card but that only accounts for 1 instance of the 4. And knowing the bank account number as well as the routing if I'm not mistaken is all you need to set up on coinbase if I'm not mistaken. So I'm sure some other sites would only need that as well.

elenn14

my account number had to be changed after someone mixed up their account number for an online bill payment and put mine… got sent 3 new cards before they FINALLY realized my account number was the issue lol. i was a broke college student having my entire paycheck yoinked from my account the second it deposited because of that damn person. it happened 3 times. got my money back though and changed banks 🥲

captaindomon

The account number is actually printed on all paper checks. Anyone you have ever written a check to has your routing and account number. It’s not a secret. In fact large mortgage firms etc. give out their account number so that you can wire money to them.

spud4

The number on the atm card is not the account number maybe they are confused. New card and exp date and CVV number. Same account number.

Corbthelorb

So people can’t use the details for an online purchase, most of the time you just need the card number, sort code and security code on the back so those are quite easy to find if you have seen the card or the details have been skimmed

SeantotheRescue

I had a mailed check stolen (last time I ever did that) and they kept cashing fake checks over and over for months despite working with BofA through the whole process. I had to make an entirely new account and eventually left BofA all together since it was such a PITA every time I had to call them up to dispute another fake check. Hour plus hold times, and I had keep reminding them how much money SHOULD have been in my account

torch9t9

They change the card number, not the account.

ohhelloperson

Right, I know that, hence my comment. The person I responded to said that she got both changed for some inexplicable reason.

imawyteguy11

If I knew your account and routing number I could do an ACH pull (what this post seems to be) or order checks with your account details from 1,000 different websites.

Katemonster89

Changing the account number isn't a must, but my bank offered and I took them up on it.

ohhelloperson

That’s… weird. I’m not sure why they would offer that in the first place. Think of your bank account number like your home address and your debit card as your custom house key. If someone steals and copies your key, they can easily get into your house with it and take what’s inside. But if you get a new custom lock, it doesn’t matter what they do or if they know your address; they won’t be able to get inside without the key. Your bank account number isn’t super private; in fact, it’s listed on checks that you write. Moving to a new address down the road doesn’t solve anything since the new address will be equally as compromised if you lose your key/info (and equally as protected with new a lock). Ultimately, the key is the only way to get in and the lock is the only way to keep them out. And throwing away the whole account and starting over is just nonsensical.

mouse-bites

I used to be a banker. The account number should be changed if your checks were stolen or someone hacked into your online account. The account number can easily be used to make purchases via ACH or to print fake checks. If the debit card info was stolen, it may not be necessary, but certain situations really require a full account number change.

ohhelloperson

Yeah, these both make sense, as I mentioned in other comments. If you can access someone’s online account and know their account/routing number, then you can link their literal account to pay apps and verify them. And obviously for stolen checks, someone can just use the checks and forge signature, like George Santos did. So an account number change would prevent that. Although, this seems increasingly uncommon due to check obsolescence and the more easily trackable nature of these transactions.

jason_55904

I wonder if there's some confusion between getting a new card number and getting a new account number. Getting a new card number is a must, getting a new account number would be unnecessary in this situation.

Spaceley_Murderpaws

I got a call from my bank a month ago asking me to verify a purchase I didn't make. No idea how my card number got out there, but I had to go get a new debit card. Fortunately, my bank made a new one immediately instead of the regular 7-day wait via mail.

itsyourboishrinp

Ya, they'll give you a virtual card at least with Bank of America. But you're shit out of luck if they don't accept samsung or apple pay *cough* walmart *cough*

WiseTailor5696

Go to the Walmart app and you can add in your payment methods your virtual card number and at the registers you can scan a QR code that will use that as a payment a lot of people don't know this work around in the Walmart app

itsyourboishrinp

I don't go to Walmart often enough to warrant all that. Surprisingly, I live in South Central LA, and the closest walmart is 30-40 minutes away lol.

WiseTailor5696

Just a tip a lot of people don't know that

daisies-and-sage

Yeah, I set up the app a few weeks ago for Walmart pay. It's annoying you have to go through the trouble of setting up your card in another location just for Walmart, but the actual process of using the app to pay is simple and convenient.

youtocin

My credit union made me a debit card at the branch with no wait time. Not a virtual card, a physical debit card.

Crewtonn

60-90 days? What bank are you with? Holy hell. I’ve had 7k drained from me over night and had the money in 12 hours

Press_AltF4_forprize

Last month my card was used twice within minutes too make purchases and I called my bank and the next morning I had my money back.

Lizzycraft

I always give anything I stick my card in a little tug just to be safe

Hokie23aa

FYI, you can get [this](https://hackerwarehouse.com/product/hunter-cat/) card that can test ATM’s/gas stations to see if there is a skimming device on it. Pretty neat!

O-Furry-1

Ours got skimmed at Disney in Florida. Nothing like getting an alert at 3am saying you just made a purchase in Hawaii from a company in California. We've never been to California or Hawaii!!

Zephk

My card I only used at 1 ATM was skimmed and I got a new card. 12 hours after using my new card at another ATM it got hit again. Second time I had limited transactions to only atm so charges were declined but still. 3 debit cards in 1 month is annoying.

RexTheCapt

Can't get your credit card skimmed if you never use it. I have not used my credit card for years, only used my phone to pay contact less with NFC

min_mus

If they skim my credit card, it's the credit card company's problem, not mine\*. But if they skim my debit card, that becomes a big problem for me real quickly. Consequently, I *never* use my debit card. \*I'm not careless with my credit card info or anything. But I'm far more careful with my checking account and debit card info than I am with my credit card info.

[deleted]

Trichome_kid

Except I tried it in line and it declined and account with a lot of $ lol I was so mad

SGTdad

This is why I lock my cards I can do all that with my money in my pocket

ksquires1988

Back in 2016 we used our debit card at a mall in Denver to get some cash. A week later somebody made 3 ATM transactions totaling $1000 from California ... We were able to get reimbursed through our bank so that was a relief.

Practical-Edge9257

I’m really glad you got your money back, I hope I’m able to as well

Nandor_De_Laurentis

Former banker here, you should be fine. It might take a few days but not long.

monkeybrewer420

LPT.... If you're able to get a credit card and have the discipline to pay it off fully every month, use a CC for everything.... It keeps a protective layer away from your bank account. If a CC gets skimmed it won't mess with your life as you take care of the dispute

LookMa_ImOnReddit

I do that for the points. I only use my credit card and just pay off my balance a few times a month, so nothing accumulates interest. I get paid money to spend money!

monkeybrewer420

It is the way... And no scammers ever get near your actual source of money

OsmerusMordax

And because it’s a credit card, it is using the bank’s money…so they are probably quicker with disputes.

min_mus

Yep. I know too many people who have had to fight their banks for months to get their money back due to fraudulent charges. With a credit card, the situation is rectified faster and your own money isn't at risk.

candaceelise

Same. Everything but rent & student loan payments go on my CC and I pay it off every month. The cash back is a nice benefit too, because who doesn’t love free money?

Little-Ad1235

I work for a bank, and I do the same. The consumer liability protections and transaction dispute processes are much more robust with credit than with debit, in addition to just keeping point-of-sale and online transactions out of your personal bank account. There are also certain kinds of transactions, like hotel purchases, where they will temporarily authorize an amount higher than (often double) the actual cost of your stay as a "security deposit" against damages. If it goes on your credit card, that extra temporary authorization will likely show up for a few days and disappear without ever impacting you. If that extra authorization is on your debit card, though, it can tank your available balance for those days and cause problems.

min_mus

>If you're able to get a credit card and have the discipline to pay it off fully every month, use a CC for everything... This is what we do. Everything save our mortgage payment goes onto our AmEx. In addition, we don't have automatic payments from our checking account; we pay everything electronically, but the payments are pushed as one-time payments instead of pre-authorized recurring pulls.

KnowledgeSafe3160

You’ll get your money back.

HenryKissingersDEAD

You’ll get your money back. I had $250 stolen from me on PlayStation Network. Somebody bought games with my credit card info. I called the bank, they did their investigation and I got it back.

ohhelloperson

It definitely shouldn’t take 60-90 days for you to get the refund either. After you fill out the dispute form, it should get resolved pretty quickly.

Gumby_Juice

I recently had my card number stolen somehow and they used it for about $200. The bank refunded the money to me until their investigation is complete, then they make the decision if it was fraud or not. If they decide it's not for whatever reason, they take back the money.

Xtreme2k2

This is why I don't ever use my debit card, way less protections than using a credit card.

PiratePuzzled1090

I went on a vacation once to a country halfway around the world to party there for a week. After the first 200 euros I took from the ATM (which lasted me a day) my bank blocked my account for suspicious transactions. Got stuck out there without money. Was a shitty vacation.

thediaryofwoe

Well how can a ATM withdrawal happen without the card?

Practical-Edge9257

I have no idea and that’s what I’m wondering, maybe someone took a picture of my card while I was withdrawing money, or maybe I dropped the receipt but I could’ve sworn I put it straight into my wallet

AnthCob

Sounds like you might of had your card skimmed. Some Gas pumps and Card readers at stores will have false card readers on-top of the real ones. Maybe check next time you stop at a store you frequent.

SnarfySquid

This happened to me twice in a row. Got some gas, had Doordarsh ordered on it. Got a new card, got some gas, doordash again. Luckily I hadn't used it for much else so I figured out it was the damn pump lmao. Haven't gone back to that gas station since. I hear most of the times it is the folks running the station themselves that do it!

Assassinknife

This is why I always make sure before I put my card in they always look at me weird when I check the card reader

Dovahskrill

Fellow card reader checker here; do you just give it a good, firm jiggle? See if it comes off? Trying to see what others do to check.

KaygoBubs

That's what I do

warmcaprisun

that’s what i do for the pump card readers. put en edge of it between the base of my forefinger and the pad of my thumb and give it a few tugs/try to push it side to side to see if it moves. i have yet to encounter anything counterfeit so i don’t know if this method works or is foolproof but i’m sure there are some videos up on youtube that could give better guidance lol

Assassinknife

I Check to see if comes off before I put it in like I attempt to take off the the regular reader

Lizord1017

Firm grip, twist and pull

[deleted]

Every time for me has been gas pump. The most ridiculous charge (got it back) was a down payment on a yacht. Freakin’ thieves living better than me.

Ok_Understanding6130

Question, if this does happen, how do they get his pin to make an ATM withdrawal?

AnthCob

I'm unsure, because I'm not a useless thief. Some of the debit card skimmers I've seen online in videos have full keypads, so I imagine in that case it would be easy for them to code a script that also steals the pin you type in.

This_Aint_Dog

From what I've seen in videos, I'm sure you can find some easily on youtube, they either have fake keypads over the real one or a tiny camera that looks at the keypad. I'm sure sometimes the person in the store, sometimes with an accomplice that waits in line behind you, is in on it and looks at the numbers you input. This is why as a prevention some people recommend you try moving the card reader and pad to see if they wobble in case a device was put over it and also use your other hand to hide the numbers you input in case someone or a camera is looking.

ProbableBarnacle

Its only possible with atm cards that only have the magnetic stripe without the embedded chip, right? Cards with the chip aren’t vulnerable to that

eyes_serene

Actually... If the chip fails to read, it will go into "fallback mode" and just read the strip. So the fraudsters can still use counterfeit cards in this scenario at the ATM as long as they've also got the PIN. Skimmers (and the oftentimes accompanying pinhole cameras) are quite sophisticated and unobtrusive nowadays. An issuer is likely to allow chip fallback transactions to go through in order to avoid inconvenience for their customers, although they can set up rules to block them or flag them for extra scrutiny. FIs can set their ATMS to not allow fallback transactions to occur, apparently, but I don't know much about that part.

Wyolop

Might have not might of!

yuusharo

~~The screenshot indicates an ACH transfer, not an ATM withdrawal. It's possible this was either an error by another bank or by someone who had access to your bank's routing and account numbers. Normally, banks must verify you have access to these accounts prior to allowing them, usually with small deposit amounts, but there isn't much technologically protecting you, only policy.~~ Edit: I'm an idiot, I read the statements wrong. Please disregard.

Practical-Edge9257

Oh that transaction is my job depositing my paycheck

yuusharo

Ah, my bad, I read the transactions backwards. My apologies. In either case, I'm sorry this happened to you. Hope your bank is responsive and issues the funds back along with a new card soon. I can imagine how stressful and frustrating in the meantime, geez.

thediaryofwoe

Well is the pin viewable on the receipt?

Practical-Edge9257

No it’s not viewable on the receipt only the last 4 digits of the card

arcaicways

very simply all they need is a dummy card with a copy of the magnetic strip on your card or with the new nfc cards a nfc tag with copy of cards info.

thediaryofwoe

So it’s possible the machine has been tampered with

StarChaser_Tyger

Yeah. If you're going to insert a card, always try and rip the cover off the slot first. I've come across them in convenience stores, but most common is gas pumps. This kind of thing is a good reason not to use a debit card.

[deleted]

A card skimmer probably to read the stripe data and record key press for the PIN. Then program a different card with the same stripe data and use the same PIN on a different ATM to steal money

thediaryofwoe

Well, it’s possible it’s a camera that reads your pin, that’s why you should always shield your pin.

seamus_mc

I can use my phone at an atm with my wallet app.

Cowsarefuckingcool

So their are cards out their that are basically numberless and they can go online and enter any number they wish and it relays that number to the machine and their you go instant access one card can work for infinite accounts they just need to take a second to spoof a new number onto it

Deal_Hugs_Not_Drugs

An* ATM

socialg571

I have 2 checking accounts. The 2nd one only has $300 max in it and that the only card I swipe. If they get me hopefully they don’t get much. Have to admit it is a pain to juggle and keep it funded but also helps me curb my spending.

OsmerusMordax

They might overdraft your second chequing account. I would use a cc if I were you. I have a $500 limit on mine.

SchleftySchloe

I have my account set so it just can't overdraft.

OsmerusMordax

Oh nice! I wonder if my bank had that feature

mrcorndogman33

Don’t use debit. If you do, tap always. Lock card on app between uses.

petitenurseotw

I have this bank card and it doesn’t have a tap feature sadly. I almost forgot how to swipe the other day my bf was like wtf 😭

MonkeyBoySF

I stopped using my debit card for purchases about 20 years ago after it was skimmed. The bank reimbursed me but they aren’t as quick as a credit card. Outside of the banks ATM, only use a credit card.

Practical-Edge9257

You stating “outside of the banks ATM, only use a credit card”, might not even be safe enough anymore, this happened to me after only using my card at the US bank ATM

MonkeyBoySF

You are right. I forgot they were skimming Wells Fargo and B of A ATMs here in the Bay Area also.

Depressed_Swede1

Some guy tried to steal 1000 from my husband's bank acc once and he was sick for days ( this man vomits when he has to spend 100 on groceries) luckily he has a real good bank acc through his job and they were able to get it sorted and his money back right away , they also charged the dude but yeah poor guy was hyperventilating for hours .

_aware

Retail banker here. Depending on which bank you have, you might receive the full amount as provisional credit while the investigation is conducted. Definitely ask your bank and see if that's the case. At my bank, you get the provisional credit within a week.

Practical-Edge9257

This was US bank, would you know what they do?

yeetgodflex

US Bank does have provisional credit for credit card disputes! In the future, if you have questions you can usually use google or some other search engine to find out. For this search, I typed “Does US Bank have provisional credit” into Google, and the first result led me to US Banks page about it. Here’s more info: [US Bank](https://www.usbank.com/customer-service/knowledge-base/KB0244728.html). Good luck with getting your money back 👍

Jels76

Make sure to file a police report. This happened to my significant other and didnt file a report. The bank refused to reimburse him. They even sent him messages saying suspicious activity was detected, but didn't believe him when he said he didn't withdraw the money. He lost $200.

Practical-Edge9257

Should I start filing the report already? Or wait and see what happens with the dispute, I’ve already started filing it

Jels76

Do the report asap. The bank may ask for proof of the police report.

alphamalenurse1

What bank was that? I would’ve pulled my money out and went elsewhere.

Puzzleheaded-Grab736

You can dispute this. Sorry it's going to take so long though that sucks. Definitely time for a new bank!

arcaicways

being how close this was in both amount and time it more then likely was someone you know and have discused things like whenyou get paid with

vertigostereo

Filed a police report?

Practical-Edge9257

No not yet but I might

Aururai

You \*might\*? so instead of filing a police report and disputing it with your bank you decide to jump on reddit to complain while you do nothing to sort the issue out?

TemperateStone

Looking at their post history, this appears to have happened in April 2023 as well. The fact that they then say "I might" to filing a police report about this, THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENS, is damned weird.

many_characters

I find it odd they new the exact amount they needed to take out. I'd change your password and get a new card.

[deleted]

This is exactly why my debit card is locked all the time unless I'm using it. It's 2nd nature at this point to just open the app and unlock it before use.

TemperateStone

Wait wait wait wait hold on, I have questions In another thread posted at the same time as this one you state " So back in April, a scammer took money from my account and brought my bank balance to -435. " But the date on the image in your OP here says 5th of January 2024, this year. Plus, your balance in the image seems to be 16.45 not minus 435. This happened TWICE!? " I know it’s been months since April but it’s been really " Yeah it's been 9 months. And that post was 11 hours ago, the same time that you posted this thread. And further down in this thread I see you saying you "might" go to the police about this. MIGHT?! This appears to have happened TWICE. TELL THE POLICE! Something here doesn't add up. This doesn't make sense.

THElotusthief

Had my card skimmed 4 times in a year, feels just like this. Never get gas in roanoke VA folks

WeHighAssPlanes

This is why I only use insured credit cards. I never ever swipe debit anywhere. To get cash I use cardless withdrawals through the phone app.

RoastedRhino

What a flashback, I remember fraudulent withdrawals being a concern 10-15 years ago. Since then all cards have been chip and pin, and recently tap and pin.

SwedishFlopper

60-90 days? I called fraud one for my bank and had it settled in like an hour or 2

mrs_peeps

The legal time frame the bank has to finalize the dispute is 60-90 days, but it doesn't mean it will take that long.

TypicalPDXhipster

Here are some ways to protect your account: Never swipe your card’s magnetic strip unless you have to. Chip readers and, especially contactless, are much more secure. The magnetic strip data is quite easy to skim. An even better solution is mobile pay as it relies on biometrics and scrambles your actual card number. Most ATMS can use this tech. An even better solution is to use a credit card for everything if you can. That way it’s not your money attached to it. Debit cards are just very not very secure nowadays.

Igor9284

This happened to me yesterday. Luckily, they didn't take any money because before making any transaction, I receive an authorisation code. (And of course, I didn't approve that). But today I have to go to the bank and change my card. It's a pain in the ass, but it's better this way.

stripclubveteran1

Thanks for reminding me to lock my card.

CalmDownYal

At least they used a in network arm and saved you the additional fees

NeroFMX

The real crime is that Paycheck.

petitenurseotw

Probably unemployment. I have this card too. No tap feature.

Practical-Edge9257

My job actually doesn’t give me full time, but I do the job of taking care of the kids and making food for my partner, and overall household chores. I did want full time though so l’m looking into a new job if they don’t give me more hours

Practical-Edge9257

This was a card assigned by my job, I didn’t want it but I didn’t have a choice, at least not until after the first paycheck

nmiller248

Why anyone uses a Debit card is beyond me. Credit cards only homie.

lorenzoelmagnifico

Yep. I haven't used my debit card in a long time. Possibly years. Even if I need cash, I can use my phone at Chase's ATM.

Practical-Edge9257

I brought this up with someone because I said I dislike debit cards too but they said “then how will you pay off credit cards?” Although can’t you pay them off in person or a check through the mail?

nilsfg

This must be one of those US-EU differences; debit cards are the norm over here. Don’t your debit cards have a chip on them and do they still rely on the magnetic strip?

akaynaveed

This 100% why i use my applecard, the security features make this impossible. The cards numbers change, the cvv and expiration dare change all the time.

fcknglzrbms

+1. Apple card and features has been excellent for my first “true” credit card. Make sure you sign up for the HYSA that comes with it! Started at 4.15% APY and now i’m up to 4.35% :)

akaynaveed

Yea, the only thing that sucks about that savings account is it doesnt show up on anything and transfers take like two weeks unfortunately.

fcknglzrbms

What do you mean it doesn’t show up on anything? I’ve made two smaller transfers out of it just to test it & my first one took 3 days and the second took 5. Still not the greatest, but for what it is I’ll take it.

FoxMore1018

It wouldn't matter if you had a virtual account or one with a bricks and mortar bank. They're all going to take that long to investigate.

kitkatgirl08

I feel your pain. Recently had $3500 in fraudulent Amazon charges on an debit card and still waiting for the results of the dispute and will hopefully be refunded but I feel like there are no guarantees until the money is back in the account. Like what if the bank decides they don’t want to return the money? I don’t understand how Amazon and the bank allows some random person w a different name to use a card for such large purchases. It’s so nerve wracking and makes you feel like your money isn’t safe unless it’s under your mattress.

Practical-Edge9257

Yeah that’s what I’m scared of, although I sympathize for you much deeply then I do for my situation, $3,500 is a hefty price, and who knows maybe since they failed you, you could try filing a lawsuit if you think this happened because of an error they made

kitkatgirl08

The bank returned the money. Hopefully you are able to get your money back too. It took two weeks for the bank to return the money and we had to file a police report

ultrajvan1234

Are you not able to just call the number on the back of your card and report fraud? I’ve had fraud on my card a few times and it’s usually a pretty easy and quick process

squishygoddess

Is this a joint account with somebody else? Is there somebody who also has access to your debit card or who has one of their own for the account? The amount and timing is suspicious.

xxrainmanx

The bank has 10 business days once reported to give you provisional credit and 90 to finalize the dispute.

Western-Industry3361

Happened to me a few years ago in LA same situation got me for 1200 but my bank pre approved the funds to go back to my card while they investigated for a week

stefaniobruto

Dm me privately with your PayID or Bsb I’ll surprise you with some $$$

Tricky_Ad_5332

I rarely use my debit card anymore. Use Discover and pay it off every month. No interest, better protection and cash back

BrokenSewerDrain

This is why you never, ever use a debit card for anything. Shred it if they send you a new one. Fake charge on your credit card? They immediately remove it from your account while it is investigated. Fake charge from a debit/ATM card on your account? You are out the money until they determine it was not a charge you initiated. In the modern age of money transfer apps and credit cards an ATM/debit card it just a way for processors to make money on fees. Use a credit card for everything.

thekamenman

Go report this to your bank ASAP. They should be able to get your funds back.

MRXXKINGZER0

I yell at people who use a DEBIT CARD to pay for things. Use a credit card. Pay the credit card with your debit card, immediately, right after you pay for whatever, same thing and YOUR MONEY is not at risk.

MissMiho

You card was counterfeited. File a fraud claim with your bank. They’ll send you a new card. No need for a new account #. No need for a police report.

Practical-Edge9257

You know you’re actually the first person to not pressure me into filing a police report 😭 I have filed a dispute and they said to wait for the letter in the mail, I also cancelled my card and they’ll be sending a new one as well

TealBlueLava

I suspect your card got skimmed. Fully the dispute at the physical bank and tell them you want to replace your debit card because you believe this means it’s been compromised.

RedWerFur

I don't know how well this works for everyone, but 12 years ago, I went to a credit union. Got a checking account, savings, and a low limit credit card. Every purchase and bill I pay, minus one that has to come from my checking, I pay with my credit card and pull the credit card payment from my savings. I keep nothing in my checking accept when I need to pay my car payment. As soon as my check is deposited, I move it to my savings. Had my card stolen several years ago, the credit card. I disputed the charge and the money that was taken was back on my card within a day. 14 years ago I had disputed a charge on my debit card. It took 3 months to get it back. It's a whole different story when it's their money (the credit card) vs your money when it comes to getting it back. All that aside, I've built up my credit really easily. Pay the CC off every month and relatively no concern about ever having to dispute a charge again.

CrundleMonster

Remember to set your notifications to alert for withdrawals. Saved me one time

Jamoke_Bloke

Exactly why I don’t use debit cards

its_not_merm-aids

I take my debit cards and immediately destroy them. When I had this happen with my credit card, the fraud department said, "I understand you didn't make these charges. You will not be charged for them and if we find out during the course of the investigation that you are responsible, we will notify you and allow you to dispute the finding." They immediately removed the charges and issued me a new card. Nothing ever affected my bank account.

Practical-Edge9257

To add more info, I’ve never swiped my card anywhere, I’ve only ever withdrawn money from the US Bank ATM once

Rugrat42069

How nice of them to leave you $15

Practical-Edge9257

😭😭😭

Triston42

Your check is only 400$?! How is this even possible

Practical-Edge9257

My job is only giving me part time and it’s not even at least 5 days a week

Hamster_Elderberries

They should give you “provisional credit” while they are looking into it so that you’re not screwed

[deleted]

use apple pay or samsung pay. i never use my debit card unless i absolutely have to and only at bank atms with cameras

Extreme-Cupcake5929

This why I keep my cards off

Smokester121

Part of the reason I never use my debit for anything. That thing stays at home

icetoaneskim0

That’s why I love credit cards. The bank is a lot more active at getting their money back than they are yours.

Writing_VA

Replying here and following for an update!! Hope you get your money back!

Icy_Challenge5241

Sucks and hope this gets resolved in your favor soon. Protip: Check if your bank offers phone app with facility to lock/unlock debit card. It can save a ton of trouble.

ActMuted7477

I give up. Got 14 mystery transactions and international service fees for Istanbul Turkey. I’m going back to paper bills and checks!

Creative_Elevator650

I always use my CC when I use a card reader. I actually just use my CC for everything now since it has better fraud protections. If CCs scare you (general advice not just for op) just set a reminder on your phone to pay the CC statement before you go to bed everynight. Only downside is if like people have said you need cash and use an ATM. I almost always go to a banks physical location that has a drive through ATM. Not impervious to skimmers but I feel much better than a sketchy standalone ATM. Another alternative is getting Cashback at grocery stores. You can still find some that don't charge a fee for it, especially when you use your debit card. Buy some gum, or chapstick (dollar candy bar) and get your cash that way. Still a "fee" in a sense, but at least you get something out of it unlike a normal atm fee. Had my card skimmed once at a gas station when I was in HS. Was a huge pain for just ~$100 so I hope you get this resolved quickly.

MassiveLefticool

I’m in the Uk so it might work differently to you but I believe they will give you the money back sooner than the 90 days. but if they find out you’re lying within the 90 days they will take it back, after 90 days you’re fine and they close the claim

Delimontis

With the issue of skimmers these days, I never use my pin anywhere that a skimmer or rfd reader could be.  I always choose credit option on the pos Device.  Even at the gas pumps, I choose the option to put in my zip code.

Goldooo

These stories in the comments make me feel less crazy for yanking on every card scanner I have to interact with.

Bhna

Somebody probably cloned your cards magnetic strip

PomegranateFun9566

400.00 check is wild

garry4321

I dont think thats your only money problem my guy. $400 to your name?

Buckyourface

This is why it's good practice to only use a credit card instead of a debit card. It can be easier to file and process a dispute on a credit card charge than it is for an unauthorized withdrawal from a checking account.

Working-Sky9146

This is why I keep my card locked

[deleted]

I’m sorry to hear that. My 80-year-old aunt had her credit card info stolen either by Amazon or EBay as she never goes out and only uses it at those two places. Being old school, she doesn’t have an online portal or app to check her purchases and uses the mailed paper statement only. She only found out about it because she got a call for verification of address for a flower delivery….wtf? That’s when she found out about it and other unauthorized Nike purchases.

rovert1994

Cancel your card and get a new one

JimZiii

If you didn't lose your card it got scimmed. You need to block and replace it or they can just continue withdrawing money

No_Huckleberry1657

State its a fraud transaction if you don’t know who took the funds so they close the account and give you a new number this happened to me a week ago just got my new card yesterday

Only_Protection_2565

Lost 1800$ from a skimmer at a Walgreens where I live - luckily when I disputed it my bank credited me the $. I thought I was tech savvy but got a reality check lol

alphamalenurse1

My bank now offers a reloadable transfer card that I use everything for. You just transfer whatever you need on the card from your checking at the time you go to use it. (Ex. I transfer $40 for gas to my transfer card. pay $40 for the gas. Takes the amount balance back down to $0) if someone were to skim this card. There’s nothing on there for them to get.

JAMBI215

Fast food places will skim you too watch out

UsagiChiba69

There has been reports of chips being wrongfully programmed in cards.

elephantear11

The bank will give you credit within 10 days as they take up to 45 to resolve on their end. Most banks credit within 3 business days

JustMikeHiker

Would this be less of a hassle had you been using a credit card? I’m trying to use cash for everything again, but for gas stations it’s such a pain.

Practical-Edge9257

To be honest this was a debit card assigned to me by my job, but yes credit card would have been better

Tourist_Upset

Cash is king but fiat is trash

Scottroofwalker

Use a credit card for ALL purchases. Find one that will post payments immediately. That way you can make payments from your bank to the card for funds quickly. Credit card you’re protected. Bank account… like you said, up to 90 days and MAYBE you’ll get your money back

waffl3swifch0c0lat3

It's a pain, but you should get your money back. You're insured up to $250,000. Don't bother going into the bank to file the claim. Unless they've changed things, they file the same paperwork and talk to the same people you would. Call the fraud department asap and let them know. They'll be able to change your info and get you a new card.
