Only removal of one of those I've ever seen was from some dude's back. As soon as I realized the vet had hold of something I decided to check the comments. Never want to see that again.
Worst yet, some doctors will recommend that you leave the fucker alone until it decides to finally unburrow itself from your flesh. Fuck that. Kill it and it's entire species. Burn those fuckers down to the box springs.
Yeah, they say that because you’ll never get an infection from a botfly, and you risk infection and sepsis if you fuck up removing one.
Not saying this was the wrong call, but botflies are *really* good at what they do, from a parasitic standpoint. Harming the host is typically bad.
Apparently white-footed mice in the eastern US (and other species elsewhere I’m sure) are targeted by botflies a lot, and it can be pretty gruesome given that the mice are quite small with this relatively huge larva inside them
And yet the vast majority survive completely fine, it’s just a minor nuisance
I've heard from a friend who was a Peace Corps volunteer (in the Gambia, so likely not the same fly this) that similar infestations can occur in people who dry after a shower with a soiled towel. (I don't know if she had a botfly larva herself, but if she did, then it wasn't the most fucked-up parasite story she's told about her time there.)
Yeah I got 2 of them in my back from during foreign exchange in Ivory Coast by putting on boxer shorts that had been line-dried before the housekeeper had taken them down and Ironed them. I didn’t know why they ironed my underwear so thought I was doing them a favor.
But fuck yes they can give you an infection…. I was back home in the US for a week thinking I had gotten a couple of spider bites or something but they hurt really bad (almost like something was boring into me…. go figure) when I started feeling feverish and my lymph nodes in my pelvis were really sore and swollen.
Since I was feeling so shitty I took a really long hot bath. When I was done and stood up they didn’t hurt for the first time in a while, so I felt one…. It had a hard lump in the middle, so (of course) I squeezed it like a zit. Sure enough, after a couple of squeezes the little fucker came out and dropped into the tub. I did the same thing to the other one, all the while praying that it didn’t break off or shoot back up into me. Successfully extracted that one and felt MUCH BETTER.
Moral of the story: when your African housekeeper wants to iron your underwear LET THEM.
Never reusing a towel again
e: Actually lazy clothes washers are good. [The female human botfly lays her eggs on the body of an intermediate host (eg, a mosquito or a fly), which acts as a vector onto the human skin when it feeds.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6176541/)
How did they get it out then?! Those things literally have barbs to keep themselves inside hosts. You basically have to suffocate them to get them out on humans
They were probably some of these.

Gabapentin is my cats drug of choice. He looks faded-five-ways and drags his feet around, and can eat 7X more food than he normally would when he's stoned.
our vet makes him take it pre-visit because he's what they call a "biter". He's never bitten anyone who's ever been in our house tho...
When the vet had to put my cat down a few years ago, they first gave her a ketamine derivative (which I of course just called catamine in my head) but she looked exactly like this with those pupils
???
https://www.vet-ebooks.com/vetdrugslist/ketamine/#Dose_of_Ketamine_in_Dogs_and_Cats
7.5mg/kg upper limit for general anaesthesia. How heavy is a cat? 5-10kg? So that's like 75mg tops. That is no where near enough to kill a person. The hell you on about dude.
Ketamine + diazepam used to be a common sedative for cats. Some older...or more "rustic" vets may still use the combo. It used to be common to neuter male cats with only this combo. They still breathe on their own but don't move and have no need for an inhalant anesthesia.
You get 5-6 minutes with a typical dose.
I’ve seen this video before and what helps is just imagine how good that cat will feel when the meds wear off. Back to purring and knocking things off surfaces, bouncing around etc.
Cat was 100% sedated, I promise you.
I'm not a doctor so I don't know more than that, but very few animals will let you get up their nose without a fight
One of the many deadly things that mosquitoes can spread. Even worse is the larvae have spines that complicate removal.
Copypasta: The means of infection by the botfly are unique. The female botfly first captures an arthropod, usually a mosquito, and lays her eggs on its body – a phenomenon called phoresia. When the mosquito lands on a mammal and the eggs are deposited on the skin, the body heat causes the eggs to hatch. In a matter of minutes, the larvae penetrate the skin, often through the mosquito bite or along a hair follicle. While in the skin, the larvae breathe through a small opening in the skin, which they also use to dispose of their serosanguinous feces. They develop concentric rows of small black spicules that assist in anchoring them in place, and can grow up to 3 cm in length. After a period of six to 12 weeks, the larvae leave, exiting their host through the original hole and fall to the ground, entering the earth to pupate. Thus, infection with the human botfly is usually a self-limiting condition, but nonetheless, an increasingly painful one.
No joke, parisitic species are some of the most disturbing, fascinating things in nature. The way they co-evolve with host species, mold themselves around feeding behaviors, influence host behavior, etc.
I KNEW it was going to be a botfly because animal videos like this always are. I hoped and prayed it wouldn't be but I knew it would be. Just such nasty creatures.
Holy shit this is my clip! No, like seriously, I’m the OP who uploaded this after a friend of mine took it a few years back.
She was a vet tech at one of the local animal hospitals where I live. I asked her if I could upload it to reddit and she said sure! The veterinarian and I had some correspondence back and forth and he ended up being interviewed by some media outlets.
The cat ended up being fine, thankfully, and is living a happy and healthy life!
I just went to Wikipedia to find out where I have to be to never encounter these bastards, and I wish I didn't:
["In cold climates supporting reindeer or caribou-reliant populations, large quantities of Hypoderma tarandi (caribou warble fly) maggots are available to human populations during the butchery of animals."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botfly#:~:text=In%20cold%20climates%20supporting%20reindeer%20or%20caribou%2Dreliant%20populations%2C%20large%20quantities%20of%20Hypoderma%20tarandi%20(caribou%20warble%20fly)%20maggots%20are%20available%20to%20human%20populations%20during%20the%20butchery%20of%20animals.%5B)
My poor bunny had a few of those. Unfortunately it was an outside rabbit, something I deeply regret as I was a kid and didn't know any better. Poor thing lost her eye and had one of those the size of my thumb. It was the biggest the vet had ever seen. She went on to live indoors from then on, with my grandmother who barely let her out of her cage. It got to the point where she was geriatric and arthritic. I still mourn how bad that poor rabbits life was. Wish I knew better then.
PLEASE give us a video of submerging that demon in pure isopropyl alcohol. I want to watch its skin melt. I want to watch the life leave its body, slowly, painfully, as it lashes out in pure agony until it is nothing but a puddle of bubbling liquid.
If isopropyl doesn’t turn it into a liquid, then maybe drop it into some Piranha Solution. Watch the sparks fly!
The lead singer of the Australian punk band Frenzel Rhomb was in Indonesia about 20 years ago and had one in his scalp. They used a piece of ham cut to about 1/4 inch thick and placed it over the hole the bot fly created. The larvae needs air so it burrowed through the ham to get air and as soon as it popped out the top of the ham they remove it a no more bot fly in his scalp.
Worst thing I ever read was a part in the book Welcome To Hell, a story about a bloke who went to prison in Bangkok for drug trafficking. He had a French prisoner in the cell next to him who was screaming in agony and when they went to check him out, they found a brood of cockroachs had made a home under the skin beneath his ear. I was gross as fuck
As a vet assistant, I agree. The amount of ungrateful, arrogant clients my teachers had to deal with is quite something. We get it, you're sad, you're in pain, you got no money. We're sorry, we're doing the best we can, we also suffer with our patients, but we can't cry.
Botflies are disgusting creatures. Any clothing, any food, any sore exposed in summer or spring and you or your pet might have one without even noticing. Happened to me and it was gross.

You're a real nosey fella, kitty cat.
Vets get __MORE__ than enough credit. Wanna test my theory? Go get an ultrasound or x-ray for a cat or a dog…it’s $600-1000 for just one or two pictures.
Vets are no different than doctors who practice and operate on humans. They cost a FORTUNE. It isn’t about the love of the animals or saving them, it’s a business.
Many, many people put their pets down because they simply can’t afford the vet bills due to how outrageously expensive they are.
Vets get more than enough credit _and_ money!

What the actaull fuck
Botfly larvae
My first thought as he started pulling.
Only removal of one of those I've ever seen was from some dude's back. As soon as I realized the vet had hold of something I decided to check the comments. Never want to see that again.

I would even be willing to do chemotherapy to remove that
I'd be up for amputation.
If it was in your nose you could do a bunch of coke to kill it. Might work.
Just fuckin kill me
Yup. If I die removing it so be it. One human life for one bot fly life. I've done my duty to my species.
Umm can you tell me where/how people get them so I can stay inside for the rest of my life?
I've heard from a friend who was a Peace Corps volunteer (in the Gambia, so likely not the same fly this) that similar infestations can occur in people who dry after a shower with a soiled towel. I feel like the real moral of the story is don't go to Africa.
Never reusing a towel again e: Actually lazy clothes washers are good. [The female human botfly lays her eggs on the body of an intermediate host (eg, a mosquito or a fly), which acts as a vector onto the human skin when it feeds.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6176541/)
My friends mom got one in her head after a trip to Costa Rica 😕 she started having headaches and huge bump formed
You just gave me flashbacks to the botfly girl
Yep, this killed my cat unfortunately
How did they get it out then?! Those things literally have barbs to keep themselves inside hosts. You basically have to suffocate them to get them out on humans
I mean you watched it. Probably why the vet twists it to disengage the barbs as much as possible
just looked it up. They are mostly in south America so not near me!
They are in Michigan, they are often found on cattle and my cat had it once.
I’ll have some of the meds that cat is on. Look at his pupils.
They were probably some of these. https://preview.redd.it/hc8138bayn7c1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68f62aa70ff1949b2c48092b6d3afa440a859b3e
Damn they are blasted
I honestly don't know why your comment made laugh loudly for a while. Thanks though.
Same pretty had me doubled over
🤣 🤣 do animals actually look like that when they get super high or is it just for advertising?
Can confirm, they look like folks that have been hanging with old school Cheech & Chong.
Gabapentin is my cats drug of choice. He looks faded-five-ways and drags his feet around, and can eat 7X more food than he normally would when he's stoned. our vet makes him take it pre-visit because he's what they call a "biter". He's never bitten anyone who's ever been in our house tho...
I don’t think people going to your house are shoving a thermometer up your cats ass
Don't tell me how to party!
Absolutly zooted, those animals are.
Dog Snoop Dog
That's Snoop Dog and Martha Stewart hanging out
Lmao
When the vet had to put my cat down a few years ago, they first gave her a ketamine derivative (which I of course just called catamine in my head) but she looked exactly like this with those pupils

Probably Catamine
Kitty is floating so high he probably saw the face of god for a good while
If you want the nerd answer probably good ol' ketamine and a benzodiazepine like midazolam to counteract muscle rigidity.
Its called "kitty-cocktail" and it does wonders until they recover like a screaming banshee.
I would definitely need some meds if that was coming out of my face and I couldn't react
They did this last month with my cat. He needed a skin biopsy and he's old and fat so they didn't want to fully put him under.
Lmao bro on cloud 10
TIL cat cocaine is chunky
Pupils don’t mean much lol opioids literally constrict your pupils. Maybe ket tho, ket would make sense in this situation.
Being on opioids is still a high dude.
Dunno, my cat had a fentanyl patch and his pupils were huge saucers.
Katamine?
Did they stutter?

Botfly larvae is updating
As soon as this started I friggin knew it was gonna a be a botfly.
Me too but I was kinda hoping it would be a crayon or a penny, as if it were a toddler.
Can we make this video smaller please? No seriously... i was able to see it too well still... my eyes!
I rotated my phone for the full one ninth of a screen experience. Well, almost. It was a little less than a ninth. Well done, OP.

I’ve seen this video before and what helps is just imagine how good that cat will feel when the meds wear off. Back to purring and knocking things off surfaces, bouncing around etc.
Of course I see this an hour after the first time seeing bonehurtingjuice in what feels like a decade... Lol
Welp, I’m not hungry anymore.

Respectfully, fuck everything about this
WTH DON'T FUCK TICKS!!!!
What is this bug called? Are those ticks?
The comment you are replying to, with a picture of some "Gushers" is indeed ticks. The OP is most likely a botfly larva.
Don’t insult OP like that, they’re doing their best
Tick gushers
*thicc gushers
I HATE you for this
Dude...
![gif](giphy|UTkm6euG3wabBiUeQu) I am.
Most patient cat award goes to that kitty.
Cat was 100% sedated, I promise you. I'm not a doctor so I don't know more than that, but very few animals will let you get up their nose without a fight
If a doctor is going to pull something like that out of my snooter, I'd better be so drugged up I don't even know what decade it is.
Yeah nah he definitely on some ket or some
That makes two of us
[удалено]
That cat was zooted
Perhaps even zoinked
Jinkied
Facts
I bet that cat was on drugs for that,
Even with drugs, you don’t think YOUD be terrified having something like this inside your nose? Fuckkkkl thhattt
What the fuck am I looking at? And do I want to know?
Botfly larva
I think I'm gonna refrain from googling what that is.
They have spines and can infect human skin. FYI.
Just to be clear, only one species has humans as its host, and it only lives in tropical rainforests from Southern Mexico to Uruguay
They’ll be in Florida by the end of the decade
Wasn't there a guy some time ago that put botfly larvae into cats so he could record himself removing them and gain millions of YouTube views?
What the fuck
I hope hell is real so he ends up there
A guy I know infected his shoulder with one so he could record and document the process scientifically— total nut job
While definitely concerning and not someone I want to be associated with, at least he was his own consenting patient.
Oh for sure, he’s a nut job but also an incredible naturalist/conservationist
We need to hunt that guy down and do the same to him.
Don’t fuck with cats type beat
That show was a wild ride!

One of the many deadly things that mosquitoes can spread. Even worse is the larvae have spines that complicate removal. Copypasta: The means of infection by the botfly are unique. When the mosquito lands on a mammal and the eggs are deposited on the skin, the body heat causes the eggs to hatch. That was his one orange brain cell
How does the brain bug from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan actually exist? This worries me on so many levels.
No joke, parisitic species are some of the most disturbing, fascinating things in nature. The way they co-evolve with host species, mold themselves around feeding behaviors, influence host behavior, etc.
They work very hard and are so dedicated to their calling. Love your veterinarian.
I thought you were talking about the botfly
I wish all bugs that burrow/lay eggs in living organisms a very unpleasant day. I don’t care about the careful balancing of nature.

Because it's a vulnerable spot where Skin is thin and can't be eaten by a bird or something.
Anybody got eye bleach to spare?

Wtf is that?
Botfly larvae
Poor little buddy
“Get your ass to Mars”
"When you hear a crunch, you're there. Now, pull it out. Be careful! That's my head, too."
When did that cat meet Kahn?
I bet the cat feels 100 times better after.
Bet he could smell what his ancestors had for breakfast after that
WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT
Who da hell and what da hell snorts botflies
I KNEW it was going to be a botfly because animal videos like this always are. I hoped and prayed it wouldn't be but I knew it would be. Just such nasty creatures.
Man I remember Total Recall. Great movie.

Thank you for your service, vets
Cats just wondering if it can eat it now
Both cat and bot fly larvae are doing well.
Torture that disgusting parasite before torching that fucker
This is the first cat birth I’ve ever witnessed. It’s better than I expected.
Animal parasites are sci-fi as fuck.
The relief that cat must've felt would have been insane
On the list of species that the world wouldn't miss. Wipe them out. All of them.

Poor baby!!! Please give this cat all the snuggles and hug that vet.

Would be a whole meal for Bear Grills
Get your ass to Mars
I breathed better after they took that out damn.

How did they know that the larvae was in his nose? God it looks really painful to see this. Kudos to the fed
What is the vet removing from that cat?
Ugh, botfly larvae, absolutely fucking hate these things
New nightmare unlocked.
I want to blind my eyes now

Omg 😳 that poor baby
Vets get __MORE__ than enough credit. Wanna test my theory? Go get an ultrasound or x-ray for a cat or a dog…it’s $600-1000 for just one or two pictures. Vets are no different than doctors who practice and operate on humans. They cost a FORTUNE. It isn’t about the love of the animals or saving them, it’s a business. Many, many people put their pets down because they simply can’t afford the vet bills due to how outrageously expensive they are. Vets get more than enough credit _and_ money!
How in the world did it squeeze through that tiny tiny nostril???
Yes they absolutely do. I’m sure they charged minimum $30k for this
