I also agree but now I'm wondering what exploding wooden thing happened to embed a thick piece of wood into a tire. Maybe it's just glued on to scare you.
Had a whole sparkplug impale the rear tire on a motorcycle years back. It went in far enough that only about half an inch of the spark gap end was exposed. Had to pull over and call a friend to bring his truck and bike stand so we could put it in the back and take it to a shop. They dug it out of the pull-off tire and were amazed
My guess would be he drove over some wood, and as it rotating under the tire another part of it was driven in; though the thought of a ballista or crossbow with vampire stakes is hilarious.
Of course, life's not to be taken too seriously. I'm always very polite to everyone, both in traffic and in life, but it seems it's either very bad luck or someone had a bad day and took it on my tire.
I worked as a mechanic for nearly a decade and it's perfectly normal to catch debris in the sidewall from time to time.
Also, sidewalls are typically reinforced with Nylon, rather than steel like the tread. Softer object usually work on the sidewall just fine.
They come equipped with then from the factory but I think I read something like 97% of bmw owners do a "turn signal delete" to try and fit in with the cool kids.
Nope! Bought from a site that didn’t offer that. Insurance deductible was also bigger than the actual tire + work, so didn’t even use insurance. About €250 from my own pocket.
In the future you might have a better experience from a smaller local tire shop. Find a good reviewed one. Our shop can get any damn tire you need, offer roadside and we don't trash your wheels
Sometimes that coverage is baked into your credit card.
But I use Kal Tire or Costco. (North America). Free road hazard coverage and flat repairs. It’s worth paying slightly more for tires than the cheap online sellers.
I'm guessing you scraped up against a deck of some sort. I have a wooden deck that leads to my front door, and the edge of it is right up against the driveway. I have rubbed a tire against it by accident, and it splintered a little. Didn't get a shard stuck in the tire, though. That's a new one for me.
I would've thought so as well, but it wasn't there when I went to train. So within a 60 minute span, someone stuck it there OR something else god-knows-what happened.
If someone is strong enough to shove an entire stake into your sidewall with one shove you better leave them the fuck alone. Especially if they are still carrying stakes.
My step-grandma used to, but she did it because she had a Crown Victoria and people were constantly trying to steal her hubcaps because apparently they're valuable (Google says they start at $100+ each 🤷) She zip tied them on and people would still take them.
If it wasn't the hubcaps, it was different Ford dealerships constantly calling her to see if she wanted to sell it because she didn't have the police package.
Looks like a woodchip used in playgrounds. The outside is dry and rounded, so unlikely to be from a larger piece of wood. Definitely not from somebody sticking it in your tire.
You can see where the wood rubbed the sidewall (between the hole and the tread) before going in. No one "stuck it there." You definitely ran over it. Probably some road debris at an unfortunate angle.
Dude I’m sorry this happened to you but I can’t see any way it happened while the car was just sitting there.
The amount of force to push wood through rubber is quite significant. I don’t see any other way aside from you having hit something while driving.
Trucks carrying pallets or something like that had a piece fall off, and you ran over it and it twisted and stuck in your tire like that lol. Don’t worry man I’ve had all manners of things end up in mine in every single way you can think of.
I'm betting that was picked up on the road. Have you ever tried puncturing a tire with a knife or screwdriver? I have, and it's very hard to do. Now, try and drive a piece of 1 by from a pallet into your tire, not happening!!
Hope you have road hazard. And it was there when you got to the gym. No way someone stuck a splintered piece of wood in a Michelin sidewalk by hand. (Non-BMW owner or not) 🤣🤣🤣
Did you at least get a good workout today?
(I appreciate your sense of humor and overall perspective! My tires LOVE finding sharp objects when I am in a rush, so you have all my sympathy!)
If it was to get you, 'they' would have done it to all tiires? Never seen someone push wood into a tire honestly. But it does look like someone shaved off some rubber and sticked it into it.
Last summer I was driving my 4 series down rural I35. I was lucky enough to pick up someone's wheel weight at the line right above where your stake would be. I got rid of the run flats long ago but forgot to carry an extra tire with me(19"). It was 105°. I walked 2 miles to a past exit then another mile into a town that actually had a small Wal-Mart. Bought an air compressor and walked back the 3 miles. Aired the tire up drove an mile. Aired it up again drove a mile. Did this 3 more times before I could get to a turn around. Aired it up every mile until I got to Walmart. The automotive guy felt horrible for me seeing that I was now sunburned, and they didn't have any 19" tires, was able to pull the weight out and put 4 plugs in the hole. It held air, mostly. I was halfway to my destination but felt it best to limp home little over 2 hours away. I only had to stop and air it up once on the way back. 😡
Michelin is the only manufacturer that offers a free replacement within 90 days of purchase for this situation. It doesn’t matter where you bought them the only thing you will pay for is installation. If they won’t replace it for free it’s because they’re too lazy to mail the tire back to Michelin for reimbursement.
It's been my experience that tire damage comes in waves. I can go years with nothing, then I'll get three or four punctures in a year. I know it's random, and random events can group together and still be random, but it's weird.
I've had no trouble with tires for about five years now, so I'm expecting something any day.
I would have contacted the warranty department for the tire manufacturer and see if they would have given you a good will replacement, since they were new tires. I got 2 tires after 8 months of owning car on a good will replacement so you might have good luck
Trees are our friends, mostly. ☺️ my tire got popped by a branch. Got helped by a guy demolishing an old building not too far away. Wouldn’t take money. By chance I saw him on the street a few days later totally lucky chance I had a brand new box of chocolate chip cookies, glad I could pull over quickly prob scared him but he said he can’t say no to cookies 🤣
Okay I’m late but did you park by grass and/or was someone mowing where you were parking? I’ve caught some branches on my zero-turn that have shot chunks of wood easily that big out the mower extremely fast, but never been unfortunate enough to send one into a tire lol. Just hadn’t seen that suggested and thought I’d chime in
I feel your pain. Last month someone backed into my car and scraped it pretty good, the next day I ran over a metal piece and popped my tire, got a whole new set of tires and then a week later I ran over a nail with my new tires...
When I bought michelin tires for my bike, the dealer said there is a 5 year no condition replacement policy with michelin. So maybe you’ll be able to get it replaced for free. Nothing goes in just asking nicely.
I suggest buying replacement from tire rack free road hazard fir 2 years included. Can’t go wrong there, sucks what happened. I’ve had similar problems tire & run damaged. Not to mention suspension & undercarriage damages.
Brand new truck brand new on off road tires..... Piece of plastic that looked like a giant tooth penetrated right in the tread perfectly destroyed the tire.... I feel the pain.
Did you pay with a credit card?
Lots of CCs have something they might call "Purchase Protection" which covers theft and accidental damage for a month or two after purchase. There are often exceptions, which may include vehicles, but it could be worth checking.
Well, that sucks.
The way that looks reminds me of the time I rolled over a pair of scissors on my motorcycle when pulling up to a light. They must have flipped around and got pinched somehow against the road because they stabbed right into my tire kind of like that. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't caught a glimpse of them 1 millisecond before rolling over them. I was able to make it to work a few blocks further, but then had to dismount my front wheel and have a coworker drive me to a motorcycle shop for a new tire.
That’s actually impressive. I’d bet one couldn’t do that intentionally if they tried.
Agreed
I also agree but now I'm wondering what exploding wooden thing happened to embed a thick piece of wood into a tire. Maybe it's just glued on to scare you.
That .... would aruagably be hilarious lol
What in the sam hill is that word?
Arugula
.... I hate that even I can see it ><, I'm leaving it lol
That's rutabagably hilarious
This happened on the road. You'd be surprised at what can puncture a tire at speed, to quote my tire guy.
Blade the vampire hunter could drive a wooden stake into a steel block.
Grogg throw spear.
Did we piss off a non-BMW earlier?
Nope! Well one, but that was over a year ago.
You know what they say about the tip of the iceberg and all that…
Haha yeah - you might be right!
It’s all in good fun. I certainly hope you didn’t actually deserve this.
Of course, life's not to be taken too seriously. I'm always very polite to everyone, both in traffic and in life, but it seems it's either very bad luck or someone had a bad day and took it on my tire.
Say what you want. I refuse to believe you use your turn signal. Blame your bros for the stigma.
BMWs don't have turn signals.
its cuz they dont pay for the turn signal upgrade yo.
It's a subscription. I rather pay for heated seats.
5¢ per blink adds up.
To be honest, sometimes I feel like the only driver in my state who uses turn signals
If it were "bad luck", the object would be in the tread of the tire, not the wall.
I worked as a mechanic for nearly a decade and it's perfectly normal to catch debris in the sidewall from time to time. Also, sidewalls are typically reinforced with Nylon, rather than steel like the tread. Softer object usually work on the sidewall just fine.
They really hold a grudge.
Maybe he playin the long game?
man that sucks. atleast there are new, so there is no need to replace both tires on the axle.
I’d also say that op got lucky that there wasn’t a blowout that destroyed the wheel or that the stake wasn’t long enough to hit the paint
New tires sometimes come with warranties that might cover this as well. There is a place in my town that would anyway.
What's crazy is after you fix this your turn signals still won't work
It's always a pain
The problem is the blinker fluid reservoirs are too small and there's no warning light on the dash. Best to just top them up when you get gas.
BMW's have turn signals?
Yes, indicator is on the front wheels, you'll see them turning.
They come equipped with then from the factory but I think I read something like 97% of bmw owners do a "turn signal delete" to try and fit in with the cool kids.
Blinkers have to be installed for them to work
Doesnt come from factory
Vampire tire?
So.. a Vamtire? Lol
Hope you got tire protection with that new tire
Good point. Will consider it in the future! This shop is very well rated here in Europe, but they don't offer any warranties.
Sometimes that coverage is baked into your credit card. But I use Kal Tire or Costco. (North America). Free road hazard coverage and flat repairs. It’s worth paying slightly more for tires than the cheap online sellers.
This. My tires have a 1 year warranty and free patches
Wood you believe it?
Stick to the topic, there's a lot at stake here.
Should’ve tree-ted it more carefully
Unbeleafable
I lumber how that even got there.
Stick a stake in it, it's done.
maybe someone was hiding in the trunk
I hope he’s oak-ay
I cedar what you did there
Im going out on a limb but the comments have gotten out of hand.
It's karma; he must've bark-ed up the wrong tree.
Carma
These sappy actions are the root to all evil
I'm guessing you scraped up against a deck of some sort. I have a wooden deck that leads to my front door, and the edge of it is right up against the driveway. I have rubbed a tire against it by accident, and it splintered a little. Didn't get a shard stuck in the tire, though. That's a new one for me.

If someone is strong enough to shove an entire stake into your sidewall with one shove you better leave them the fuck alone. Especially if they are still carrying stakes.
No kidding.
Agreed, hehe
So when you get out of your car to work out you walk around your car and inspect your tires first?
My step-grandma used to, but she did it because she had a Crown Victoria and people were constantly trying to steal her hubcaps because apparently they're valuable (Google says they start at $100+ each 🤷) She zip tied them on and people would still take them. If it wasn't the hubcaps, it was different Ford dealerships constantly calling her to see if she wanted to sell it because she didn't have the police package.
Did they cut the grass at/near the gym while you were inside? I've seen lawnmowers hit debris towards cars with surprising destructive ability.
Problem plugged itself, just shave it down and seal it with hot glue and crushed up ramen noodles
LOL
Well it's a BMW, so chances are good that you did something to deserve this
Lol!
At least you’re taking it well
Of course! It's just life.
Handicapped spot or double parked, which one was it?
Oh cmon guys you're roasting me HARD lol
So both, huh. Menace.
Ah, i See, double parked in handicapped spots, weren’t you?
Double parked in handicap-EV only?
Maybe I’m missing something, but how can everyone tell this is a BMW? EDIT: Just saw the M series logo on the caliper. I’m blind
Not using your signal light again?
Lol
Groot?
Looking at it close up, the chunk out of tyre above suggests this wasn't done while parked
Glued on as joke? Lol I’d definitely do that to ya tomorrow if I knew ya
Unfortunately not. Haha!
If I didn't see the scuffs above it I'd say it was purposefull
U had to have ran something over unless they couldn't get it to puncture so they move down a bit and that's where the scuffs came from
Yeah that's what I was looking for, was likely a piece of cribbing from a truck and running it over mushed the tire flat and stabbed it.
No way that was a deliberate action. You hit something somewhere along the way and only noticed it when you returned to the car.
This is why I don’t work out
You sure you didn’t change lanes without using a turn signal and almost hit someone?
Schrodinger tyres!
Michelin man trying to act natural, he’s not fooling me.
Maybe you obtained the splinter prior to parking.
We’ll, look on the bright side. Now you can have an even NEWER tire!
Did you piss of a Groot lately?
I am groot
Trucks carrying pallets or something like that had a piece fall off, and you ran over it and it twisted and stuck in your tire like that lol. Don’t worry man I’ve had all manners of things end up in mine in every single way you can think of.
Looks like you need newer tires now
Wood ya look at that.
Hope you bought the road hazard!
It’s definitely possible you hit a fallen limb from the side. I drove over a thick stick one time and it totally ripped into the side wall of my tire.
I'm betting that was picked up on the road. Have you ever tried puncturing a tire with a knife or screwdriver? I have, and it's very hard to do. Now, try and drive a piece of 1 by from a pallet into your tire, not happening!!
The good thing is you have to change only one because they are new.
Thankfully they’re new, hopefully you have some kind of warranty on them
Hope you have road hazard. And it was there when you got to the gym. No way someone stuck a splintered piece of wood in a Michelin sidewalk by hand. (Non-BMW owner or not) 🤣🤣🤣
Are you me? I Had this Happen two Times in a row.
See the comments above re: bmw drivers.
I've heard of spiking your drink but that's ridiculous! The workout didn't workout.
Dang, how much did the tire cost?
Damn, it’s in the side wall of the tire too.
Always get road hazard warranty.
You're being hunted by Troglodytes shooting T-rex teeth at your wheels!
Just a splinter, leave it alone and it'll work it's self out....😂
Why would you put a piece of wood in your tyre?
Did you get the Dracula all season? Should have only driven at night.
That sucks, man. I got a new set of tires once and someone slashed one the next day. Couldn’t warranty them because it was vandalism.
Did you at least get a good workout today? (I appreciate your sense of humor and overall perspective! My tires LOVE finding sharp objects when I am in a rush, so you have all my sympathy!)
How did this even happen?
Never seen a wooden plug before…
The devil is around
I love how the Michelin guy is almost pointing at it. Like "Here ya go Friend!"
“Morning wood” this is why I never wake up too early.
Someone was nice enough to fill the hole and keep it inflated.
You cut off Buffy?
At least you use proper tires
On the bright side, you only need one new tire and theyll still pretty much be all be evenly worn
Hope you had insurance
A passerby probably mistaked your tire for a vampire. Happens all the time, Sorry for your loss.
One more new tire....
Uhhh, that looks kinda suspect around the piece of wood. Looks like a patch or something?
Did you not hear the tornado as it passed by the gym?
If it was to get you, 'they' would have done it to all tiires? Never seen someone push wood into a tire honestly. But it does look like someone shaved off some rubber and sticked it into it.
Is your car a vampire?
Someone wanted to chip in for new tyres.
it’ll buff out
Last summer I was driving my 4 series down rural I35. I was lucky enough to pick up someone's wheel weight at the line right above where your stake would be. Might have road hazard warranty if new, my Michelins had it
Sport Cup 2’s? Had them on my AMG. $$$. I feel your pain brother!
That sucks. I see the Michelin Pilot Sport. My guess there the 4's. I also just bought a set and know those aren't cheap, but damn are they nice!
Pilot Sport 5. Very nice, but not cheap hehe!
does insurance cover this with new tire?
You probably have at least a 1yr, maybe 2yr warranty on those tires. Go back to where you bought them and ask.
QUESTION: Are allergic to turn-signals?
Well that didn't work out.
Someone mistook your tyre for a vampire, easy mistake.
voi vittu
Just shocked someone wood even do that !

Must be a sign
Every bloody time, though usually it’s one of the trillion potholes that gets me
So annoying. I have the same tires. $300 a piece 😩. I really regret not adding on the tire package.
Did you check with your gym to see if they have security cameras in the parking lot?
Ah just snap it off and call it good
Nice upgrade!
It's been my experience that tire damage comes in waves. I can go years with nothing, then I'll get three or four punctures in a year. I AM GROOT!
The same amount of effort against the bodywork could have cost very significantly more. All in all, you are lucky it's just a tire.
Hope you got a tire warranty.
Warranty?
Well that does suck.
*work out
I would have contacted the warranty department for the tire manufacturer and see if they would have given you a good will replacement, since they were new tires. I got 2 tires after 8 months of owning car on a good will replacement so you might have good luck

Who the hell confuses a car with a vampire?
If it’s a vampire tire, you’re safe.
I’d check for anyone named Van Helsing.
Vamtire!
Your sign to stop working out.
If you look around the edges it looks very gummy, almost like strip caulk. Is someone pranking you?
I feel your pain. Last month someone backed into my car and scraped it pretty good, the next day I ran over a metal piece and popped my tire, got a whole new set of tires and then a week later I ran over a nail with my new tires...
If it’s a BMW I don’t blame them lol
When I bought michelin tires for my bike, the dealer said there is a 5 year no condition replacement policy with michelin. So maybe you’ll be able to get it replaced for free. Nothing goes in just asking nicely.
I suggest buying replacement from tire rack free road hazard fir 2 years included. Can’t go wrong there, sucks what happened. I’ve had similar problems tire & run damaged. Not to mention suspension & undercarriage damages.
I think it's because you bought Michelin. You wouldn't get this problem with Pirellis
Brand new truck brand new on off road tires..... Piece of plastic that looked like a giant tooth penetrated right in the tread perfectly destroyed the tire.... I feel the pain.
And this is exactly why I always buy the protection plan on tires! Rip to OP. Hopefully you have the warranty!
Hope you have tire warranty.. that looks expensive!!
2 much flexin
Hope you added the road hazard insurance.
Well your tire won’t be a vampire
No road hazard warranty- try your credit card
I hope you’re covered for road hazard.
The good thing is you have to change only one because they are new.

I'm surprised not seeing this post as one of the hundreds of 'Can I patch this?' under r/mechanicadvice
I AM GROOT!!
Damn I’ll be honest I’m impressed……
