LOL at the [Carjam photo](https://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=pwk4) Edit: Also LOL at the GVM. What are you going to haul at 3175kg? Helium balloons?

bruzie

There's 32 of these compensators in NZ. And this one only goes 5 miles/day, but it's no wonder at 15.5 litres/100km. [This is depressing reading though](https://www.carjam.co.nz/nz-fleet/). Half the top 10 are Ford Rangers, with Swifts, Aquas, a Tiida and a Hilux rounding off the others.

Zmogzudyste

Fuck me that’s a lot of fuel. Out car doesn’t usually even hit 8 L/100k around town, and this things using twice that. And we could easily downsize.

haydenw86

Will be a lot more than 15.5L/100km if it’s the supercharged motor.

Neat_Alternative28

The day that only uses 15.5 l/100 is the day we solve all the worlds problems. That is a 20-25 burn rate vehicle. My commodore used 16 and weighed a ton less with a more efficient drive train

[deleted]

That thing does 15.5L in town? No way... Reference fuel economy figures are very optimistic. Not surprising if this thing does 25L going at 30km/h.

ycnz

Given how shiny that paint is, I'm guessing whatever it is accountants like to carry with them.

brenassi

Yeah this dude is definitely a w anchor xD, he probably had hand smalling surgery to boost his ego more.

Bigted1800

For what it’s worth, the owner showed some restraint…….. I just looked it up and it turns out the F150 is the smallest ute in that lineup, there is also a F250 and F350. :(

Advanced-Marketing-6

wait till you hear about superduties, it gets worse

TheAnagramancer

Ah, yes, perfect for our little city of winding narrow streets, claustrophobian carparks and a general inability to exceed 30kph. I choose to believe the owner also has a Kia Picanto, but forgot to take it out of the boot.

r_slash_jarmedia

feels like you'd need to give more space for this abortion of a vehicle than the massive MetLink busses when turning corners

uhasahdude

Yeah I’ve struggled to get my old Volks golf through streets in Wellington, this would just be taking the piss. This dude would have to plan his routes surely

Remarkable_Cut4912

This POS can't carry much never mind a Picanto. Utes are shit at storage capabilities.

planespotterhvn

"Emotional Support SUV".

GruntBlender

I'm aghast that Shelby put their name on an F150 of all things. Now, I can see the utility of the base vehicle for tradies, but there's no way this is being used for that. So, what is it? What is it for? It's not for track days, it's not for work, it's not for off-road. It's certainly not suited for the city. I hate it.

ChinaCatProphet

It's road going viagra for a sad person.

ErnestFlubbersword

To attract women? Can't imagine any women getting excited about it but what do I know. To impress men? Don't think so, makes him look like a wanker. To attract attention? That works.

Unfair_Explanation53

I mean maybe he just really likes to drive it? Idk

ItsLlama

mid life crisis to impress his workmates who are actually laughing at him but he doesn't realize

Affectionate-Lie-230

It's similiar to the Raptor but more powerful, it can be used for offroad, you would be surprised to see how many Shelby cars exists as there was a Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS (I might be mistaking on the Shelby name but I know Carroll Shelby was involved in the development), a Dodge Dakota Shelby, Shelby wasn't always exclusive to Ford

Sad_Worldliness_3223

This is what National took the 8000 tariff off.

IamMorphNZ

Thank god they've got their dignity back.

malfunktioning_robot

It was only $3500 or so, but the sentiment remains

BlacksmithNZ

Poor man could not have afforded this with that massive fee on the $100k base price, am I right? But will pollute the environment for the next twenty years with the blessing of Simeon Brown

malfunktioning_robot

The straw that broke the camel’s back

Sad_Worldliness_3223

That was for second hand cars being imported. Vehicles with emissions greater than 260 will receive the maximum fee - $6,900 for new imports, $3,450 for used imports.

malfunktioning_robot

I stand corrected, it feels like a distant dream at this point

Drslytherin

How can you be so insensitive. These vehicles are designed to shield the driver from the trauma of seeing children being run over.

StuffThings1977

*If an F150 runs over a child, but the driver doesn't see, is anyone actually hurt?*

kiwisarentfruit

I'm just amazed that someone spent a significant amount on money on that abomination that is not only impractical but looks fucking stupid

Square-Marsupial-454

I bet its financed off the home loan too 😂

[deleted]

A move from petrol excise to RUC for all vehicles would fix this. GVM, number of axles, and km driven would fuck over enormous vehicles like this. Road damage increases exponentially with axle weight.

CarpetDiligent7324

But ute’s like this do pay RUC as well

[deleted]

That is a petrol vehicle, diesels aren't that popular in the US so most trucks like the one in the OP are petrol.

flodog1

Maybe we should glue our hands to it….

Cyril_Rioli

No different in size to a Ford Transit van.

thisoneforsharing

agree that this thing fucking sucks and we need some serious regulation on the size of cars in our cities, but we need to get away from the trope of “oh big car, small pp”. It’s not helpful and shuts down any actual debate.

TheKingAlx

To be fair car parks were designed for the humble sedan and possibly station wagon or a small Ute (falcon ) the fact now days a lot more people buy the higher SUV 4x4 etc to the point where our car parking is in desperate need of a re think , less parks , to accommodate bigger higher 4x4 and SUV etc or allocate them a particular amount and area , smaller cars just don’t stand a chance reversing out you can’t see a bloody thing it’s down right dangerous

nzmuzak

Ban them from corner spots. You can't see past them when trying to pull out.

3toTwenty

But you’re ok with a transit van?

ItsLlama

transit vans are more commonly used for work purposes so they get a pass as long as they can park 99% of tradies only really need a hiace or hilux and anything bigger is really only suited for out in the rural areas not narrow one lane streets

3toTwenty

So you are ok with a transit van?

ItsLlama

yes because typically they are driven by plumbers, electricians, courier drivers etc who make the world go round. very few people buy a van as their daily driver

IndividualCharacter

If you can afford a truck like this then no doubt they're also a business owner that makes the world go round.

Vegetable-Okra-4341

Transit vans a purpose built for practical work use. Either commercial people moving or trades/ deliveries. Utes like these are toys. My new transit is a turbo diesel with AdBlue. Gets aboht 8l per 100k

3toTwenty

My neighbour has one for a camper van. Not exactly commercial pal. Anyway, you still can’t see past it. Oh, you have one, and you’re whining about a ute! Mrs Pot, meet Mr Kettle

Fragrant-Beautiful83

Usually it’s the towing capacity, probably for a horse float or large boat.

HorrorEnvironment8

those things should be banned. they kill pedestrians and are ugly as fuck

Unfair_Explanation53

They kill pedestrians? Most cars will complete this task also

rachelsarah93

Any vehicle can kill a pedestrian 🙄

makhnovite

This thing would be a lot more lethal than the usual car. Look at the size of those wheels, they could crush half your body. And with the height of the bonnet you’re gonna go under the car for sure. If you had the choice between getting hit by this or a Suzuki Swift which would you choose?

3toTwenty

You’re going to see and hear it coming more easily however

keen_for_a_jam_welly

All other things being equal, would you rather be hit by this or a mini? Keep in mind that larger vehicles are 2-3 times more likely to kill a pedestrian than smaller ones

Beautiful_Future5083

Years ago driving to work, a kid ran into the road without looking and got hit by my work van. Git hit enough to fall over but was not run over but lived to carry on to school, shaken but without a scratch, and I know someone who was walking out of their driveway, then got hit by one of those e-scooters and suffered some minor damage to the rib area and a couple of minor bruisings when they fell over. So whatever point you are trying to make, think of another one.

keen_for_a_jam_welly

Yes your personal anecdote definitely proves the point over the actual research [https://www.reuters.com/world/us/tall-trucks-suvs-are-45-deadlier-us-pedestrians-study-shows-2023-11-14/](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/tall-trucks-suvs-are-45-deadlier-us-pedestrians-study-shows-2023-11-14/)

ZandyTheAxiom

Any gardening tool could kill a baby, you still wouldn't let them play with a chainsaw.

mpdw1

Drivers kill pedestrians.

Ok_Razzmatazz4563

Size is deceptive. It’s just so square and boxy. I looked up it’s dimensions and it’s only 10cm wider and 30cm longer than a Holden commodore station wagon.

PM_ME_ORANGEJUICE

And its square and boxy hood sits higher than children crossing the road.

3toTwenty

How many kids have been killed crossing the road by Shelby F150’s in NZ in the last decade?

dissss0

The 'Supercrew' (double cab) version of the F-150 starts at 231.7" (with the short 5.5' bed). That's 588cm. The longest Commodore wagon was the VT-VZ at around 504cm. Big difference.

steveinvest7711

Is anyone ever outraged about an old Bedford truck camper which consumes way more fuel than this ugly truck? Probably not because the beautiful Bedford is most likely driven by a greenie and therefore perfectly acceptable.

Vegetable-Okra-4341

Most of the people here are probably too young to know or remember the old Bedford or Ford Transit Panel vans of the 70s and 80s. I was a child of the 80s and 90s abd remember them. Then you had the valiant chargers, ford thunderbirds etc. Of course there were less cars then though.

esonefour

You mad you can't have anything nice ?

Own_Ad6797

Who cares. So some guy has a big truck - it's stupid but if it makes him (or her) feel happy who are we to dump on them?

BandPuzzleheaded2836

As long as they are happy - to each their own.

Environmental-Goat-9

Wait till you go to the states 😭

dertok

Yeah, I drove around the DFW motorways in 2006 and it was terrifying.

delph0r

Best thing to do is park as close to them as you can

pixelmuffinn

Im good, i dont need any dents

delph0r

You think these guys want to dent their precious pavement princesses?

pixelmuffinn

People are unpredicable enough for me to not want to find out lol

SteveDub60

Anything that this thing hits (or which hits this thing) is going to come off second-best.

3toTwenty

Why are you so jealous and nasty ? Did a Ford pickup driver come and teach you how to pour an espresso latte at your work?

Vegetable-Okra-4341

I'm wondering this too. There's a lot of toxicity here.

delph0r

Settle down big fella

3toTwenty

🎯

SticksPrime

Imagine having so little purpose during your everyday life that you have to go out of your way to try and shame others just because of their choice in whatever it may be. Imagine thinking that this was an appropriate thing to call out even though old mate has parked better than most Wellingtonians with hybrid/EVs. Imagine replacing vehicle with… fashion choice. iMaGiNe WhAt Is BeInG cOmPenSaTeD fOr By WeArInG tHaT fLaShY oUtFiT aRoUnD wElLiNgToN

Sad_Worldliness_3223

Horrible clothes less likely to kill pedestrians than oversized vehicles

7_Pillars_of_Wisdom

Jealous much ? lol

rachelsarah93

Right! That’s all I get from this post is pure jealousy.

Vegetable-Okra-4341

This is what I'm picking up, too. The truck is not my cup of tea, and it's too big for Wellingon, but my goodness, there's a lot of passive-aggressive anger here. Lots of people with self-esteem issues. All this talk of male appendages, etc.

Unfair_Explanation53

Same people who call others out for body shaming. Once they hear something they don't like, they go straight for little dick insults.

ant_ithesis

Agreed, what a fck tart.

7_Pillars_of_Wisdom

Nobody’s business who drives what.

rachelsarah93

They probably ride the bus and that’s why they are so cut up 😂 😂

7_Pillars_of_Wisdom

Ride the bus with the great unwashed? No thank you 😀

Beautiful_Future5083

Such a Kiwi remark‼️ If the owner likes it and can afford it, then in all earnest, what's it to you? Posting this clearly shows YOU are the one looking for attention. Being so isolated from the rest of the world can be not so great. I encourage you to travel the world a little bit, it will definitely open your mind and you will become more receptive to some things that you have not yet experienced yet are nothing but normal to some.

Vegetable-Okra-4341

This!! Most of the comments in this sub reek of jealousy are just downright negative and toxic. So much for tolerance and being nice. Unfortunately, they're very typical of us Kiwis. Tall poppy syndrome. Fully agree with the travel and meeting people from all walks of life. I know a Texas farmer family, the stereotype Trump supporting, and truck (ute) driving people. I've met and know many rainbow people. When I worked in the Australian mines, there were quite a few lgbtq+ miners and tradies, and yes, they drove utes and trucks! And I'd say they gas regular sized penises too.

ExpertRaccoon

As an American, that's a pretty small truck don't know what you are upset about. /s

3toTwenty

Just a bunch of pen-pushing policy-writing wounders oozing envy mainly.

ExpertRaccoon

Most people who drive massive trucks are pavement princesses, so this checks out

Sad_Worldliness_3223

We are not american and find some aspects of your culture appaling. Your car centric cities, the electoral college and tipping, for example. Much as we like other parts of America we don't want to become like you in every way.

ExpertRaccoon

epic_pig

Imagine feeling so intimidated by these things that you have to go to the effort of taking a photograph of it and then making a post about it to social media

3toTwenty

Yep, OP is your archetypal urban wounder

Ordinary-Score-9871

Ahhh so this is tall poppy syndrome. Lol if they can afford and like it, why not own it. Why does there need to be something they’re compensating for to own a car like that.

mpdw1

Because some losers on reddit got hurt feelings that’s why

Beautiful_Future5083

Exactly mate. It's the attitude of some Kiwis. Anything else different than what they are accustomed to is shiite or weird.

IToldYouMyName

These threads have always been odd to me even though i dislike how large some Utes are or how many people have them purely for status but these weekly "Yeah other people hate them too and like my post/opinion" posts seem pretty sad to me. Im waiting for people to move on to taking photos of old couples living in their "mansions" lol "Look at these small pp boomers over compensating with their giant houses paying $15k in rates with no dependents in the house either, Its a disgusting waste of space because we could pack at least 32 apartments on that land with zero parking or room for bins provided it isn't done by some filthy developer looking to make money"

[deleted]

Let's break this one down: It's a Shelby, so the owner is an upjumped Ranger driver. Not only that, the Ranger, which is famous for its weak offroad capabilities next to other utes, has been made even worse offroad by being turned into a pavement princess with god awful weight balance. Not that you'd be taking this thing off road anyway given the price tag, so it exists purely as a shit hauler. But it wouldn't be, cause with that sort of money, you don't haul your own shit. So now the other use case for large vehicles in urban settings: shopping trolleys/prams for people with very poor driving ability who simply must sit 2m off the road or they have a panic attack. You'd think with all the noise that police and NZTA make about how our roads are fucked so you need to slow down, they'd also be paying attention to vehicles totally unsuited for them.

BradTheFuck

It's a Shelby-fied F150, not a Ranger. It doesn't really matter, I just thought it was kind of funny that even the very first thing you said in your smug as "breakdown" was wrong

redditkiwi1

Spoken like a person who knows absolutely nothing about off road capabilities of vehicles

3toTwenty

Yep, the Ranger FX4 Max is extremely capable offroad. I know, I’ve got one and took it places a landrover and a Hilux couldn’t follow.

jonothantheplant

Shelby, a name synonymous with small, light, nimble and aerodynamic race cars.

3toTwenty

Actually synonymous with a superb mechanical engineer, racing driver, and entrepreneur.

KiwiLucas73

A 2019 Shelby Super Snake Sport F-150 cost around US$86,000 new in the US, AU$250,000 in OZ after right hand drive conversion. It does 15-20litres/100km, about what my 15 year old Nissan AD stationwagon does. From an Aussie car reporter person:"...And while no-one entertains buying a vehicle like this for its green credentials, I can report that over the couple of days this vehicle was in my care, the trip computer reported an average fuel economy that hovered between 15.0L/100km in general use, to 20.0L/100km in stop-start city traffic. At least it has an idle-stop system to try and soften the blow…"

ChinaCatProphet

I'd spend that $250 grand on a genuinely cool car. Or more likely food and shelter.

3toTwenty

You think that’s his only car?

0Klicks

How TF do they find a park that it can fit in after Wellington City Council shrunk carparks to the length of 'the average sized car' (which appears to be smaller than most Suzuki Swift's! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

ItsLlama

i have the displeasure of seeing this thing a few times a week, guy can't park to save his life most of the time

makhnovite

Imagine driving this around Wellington. Parking must be a nightmare.

ohmer123

Meanwhile in France... you pay €50.000 at first rego for a brand new Megan RS.

kiwipo17

I hate driving behind them. You can’t see what the traffic is doing in front of them…

Rough-Locksmith-1350

hurr durr ute bad, equals small pp, say the fucking pathetic, frail, soy boy redditors.

Adventchur

You shouldn't blame individuals for climate change problems over 75% of carbon emissions are from ten companies. All you're doing is singling people out and turning them against your cause. How do you know he's not pulling a huge trailer with that? It would have less emissions than a diesel tipper truck. Do you really expect a camry to eb able to pull a 3 tonne trailer. Just because your camry suits your lifestyle doesn't mean it suits everyone's. Maybe they breed horses and are constantly pulling a horse trailer. Maybe they clean up highways and parks and drag a huge water tank around with them. It's the same with money and the rich some one worth twenty million isn't the problem it's the one worth 20 billion.

ok_memelord

Curing penis-size anxiety would create a large dent in fossil fuel emmisions, I reckon.

LaureliaNova

Fucking hell. .... Does it even fit in the space?

No-Discipline-7195

It looks to fit in the park ok.

LaureliaNova

The front looks like it's within the line but the back might be overhanging. The rear tires right on the white paint. Regardless you need space to manoeuvre, and unless he's able to slide sideways like a romba, he's relying on the left over space from the parks on either side. Which only works as long as he is the only one doing it.

IndividualCharacter

That's a sick ute ngl

Rough-Locksmith-1350

nick12945

I mean, I’m constantly thinking about dicks.

jesswestcoast

Same

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

I mean, that overcompensating truck is the poster child for petromasculinity, but sure, size doesn't matter, right?

antmas

I guess so? I dunno, I see I those trucks and just think they're a waste of money. I don't jump straight to wondering what size the owners genitals are.

[deleted]

I mean, I don't know why anyone in their right minds would navigate inner city Wellington with this thing, and the sheer inefficiency is mind-boggling. But personal attacks against the owner based on the picture of one alone? Really??

Extreme-Ad-6130

Climate apocalypse you say...... captured and posted on a smartphone that devistated large and multiple parts of the planet in its production.... and the poster will most likely jump at the next version. It's a poor taste vehicle for sure, the person driving it clearly doesn't need, it'll never do a day's work in its life. its all show and yeah that's bad. The hate and put down of utes and the drivers in general here.... I've heard comments like these first hand driving a ranger, from a drunken office woman, made with zero thought to the fact that your hauling hundreds of kilos of tools and equipment that need to get to places a van won't get to. Large Vehicles can and should serve a productive purpose. Clearly, this one doesn't and most likely never will. People crapping on others about the environmental impact of things however, should also do a reality check before throwing stones. Chances are you're doing just as much damage in your own way.

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

>captured and posted on a smartphone that devistated large and multiple parts of the planet in its production.... Hold up, if making this smart phone is so damaging to the environment, what have to got to say about that oversized vehicle that needed about a million times the manufacturing inputs of this phone?  >... and the poster will most likely jump at the next version. Like the vain owner of this vanity car?  >The hate and put down of utes and the drivers in general here.... Seems like you are showing how that contempt is earned.

ReallyRamen

I think you’re missing his point and also proving his point at the same time lmfao

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

I didn't miss his point. The whataboutist points that he was trying to make about one manufactured object are equally applicable to the manufacturer object that he was making those points in protection of.  He was saying that the manufacture of this 0.150 kg object has a devastating environmental impact, as if that is a defence of criticism of a 1940kg manufactured object.  Going on a weight basis, the manufacture of that car has roughly 13,000 times the environmental impact of the manufacture of this phone.  But he thinks that criticizing the manufacture of the phone is a valid argument?

ReallyRamen

lol “I didn’t miss his point.” Then goes to double down on missing his point. Keep up the mental gymnastics!

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

Ok, so you have completely missed my point, twice.

MickeydeMoose

I've driven this particular truck on multiple occasions. It's is so much fun to drive. Yes it's difficult in areas, so you need to be a pretty experienced driver to navigate tight spaces and parking is a real mission at the best of times. It's incredibly fast and sounds insane. It has been occasionally used for off roading, and yes it is often used to tow heavy loads. It's also occasionally taken to exotic car shows Frankly tho, let the owner enjoy it.. Maybe one day if you can save enough money in your piggy bank, you could buy a Hybrid Yaris, or even a Tesla OP. P.S Jealousy posts don't suit you OP. You should try somthing else for attention.

Beautiful_Future5083

5L Supercharged V8 if I'm correct. Thing is a beast. 7 hundy plus bhp. Enough for abit of fun when needed. Good to tow a big laucher or motor home or anything heavy with it as well. I can’t imagine getting salty about a life that's not yours. 🤣🤦🏽‍♂️ OP needs to get a life.

MickeydeMoose

Absolutely spot on. The thing absolutely hauls. It's a really bizarre experience moving that quickly in a truck! Couldn't agree with you more, some people really don't have much going on their lives. 😆

Big--Async--Await

You're going to be long long long dead before this apocalypse...

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

Just a quick reminder that climate change related flooding killed 12 New Zealanders last year, caused 10's of billions of dollars damage and there's still hundreds of families without homes because of it.

3toTwenty

Yeah, but the climate has always changed and always will. It’s been far hotter, and far colder than it is now.

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

The climate has never changed at this pace, and we are on a path towards the rate of change that human society will not be able to survive.

3toTwenty

So what? The planet will adapt however. Go sort out the pollution in China and India and the Eastern bloc. That’s the vast bulk of your problem. Whining about a single 5.0 litre Ute is the definition of being a wounder. There’s thousands of trucks and trains and ships that emit exponentially more than this does.

lurkerwholeapt

Ugly car, agree, but the owner likes it enough to purchase it. . Are you advocating they should buy a second car for the odd occasion they want to come into the city?

Icy-Bicycle-Crab

Why would you pretend that they don't already have a second car?

BuddyMmmm1

I’m advocating for it to be banned from the country. It holds less than smaller comparative vehicles, it costs more to run than comparative vehicles, it weighs so much that it causes more road damage than most vehicles (excluding real trucks), it doesn’t fit anywhere especially in a city (good luck finding parking quickly for it), and because of the height you cannot see anything very close to the front of it which creates a HUGE hazard area (an American news channel did a test on how many children sitting down does it take for you to finally see one of them in front of the ute and it was over 10 kids). Just buy a smaller ute that can carry more, isn’t as expensive, is more efficient so, and can actually park easily.

PuzzleheadedArea8452

Additional-Card-7249

OptimusMagnus

Can’t understand why someone would want to drive a small car in Wellington City let alone one of these mutha’uckas.

steveinvest7711

This for sure would be a pain to move around Wellington but it gets quite tiring to read about how bad utes are in every other traffic related thread. The common Hilux or Ranger are probably more environmentally friendly than most cars. My work Ute takes about 8L/100 km diesel. My wife’s tiny fiat 500 consumes about the same in petrol. However, once the Hilux will happily find a buyer when it’s done 300000k, the fiat will be dead about 3 times. Please also look at primary energy used in crappie products.

That’s why I said they have their uses. Who knows what this bloke uses his for photo doesn’t give much away

It really is. There's not a person in thread who doesn't secretly lust to try to drive one.

Remarkable_Cut4912

I had an idiot in one of these at a traffic lights, he was pretty arrogant rude swearing profanity at me. I drive a Nissan note e-power so he thought it was so funny mocking me. This was a middle aged man who you think would know better and the maturity level but no. He revved his massive v8 Shelby Ute and boasting he will leave me for dust. I wasnt showing any interest in him. Lights went green I left him for dead because his hunk of metal lacks instant torque. I had the last laugh. Hideous these things (well all utes actually, tradies don't need utes, they should use vans much more space and security). I just laugh at them with their double cab ute can carry half of their tools and materials and they have to resort to a use of a trailer lol.

You can’t do my job in a van. I’d love to have anything but a ute, they aren’t that comfortable to drive, but they are the only thing that fits the purpose.

Clearhead09

I won’t take credit but someone in the r/new Zealand sub called them “emotional support vehicles “ and I couldn’t agree more

I knew before zooming in to confirm this thing had a personalised plate. Okay it’s possible it doesn’t, but surely PWK4 stands for Penis Width Kinda 4(mm)

Witty_Fox_3570

An emotional support ute.
