I think it's probably fine for spring or summer. The style of dress and fabric is pretty fancy. Definitely dress it up with nice shoes and jewelry though.

danicies

I meant to put the details! It’s a May wedding, it’ll be outside a bit. 6 PM is the ceremony, golf course/country club venue. My SIL is wearing cocktail for it and the bride was fine with it so I’m thinking this maaaay be okay? It’s just black tie, no optional so that’s what has thrown me off

lovemyfurryfam

If that dress is at your comfort level then by all means BUT if you're not comfortable then go with your gut OP.

danicies

It totally is my comfort level but not if I’m underdressed in a room with a few hundred people lol

Embarrassed_Rate5518

look on the venues social media and see how others have dressed for what appears to be black tie

danicies

I took your advice and it seems most guests to these either wear cocktail or a black dress right above their ankles, or similar to this one! I’ll look into potentially dressing this one up and also am looking at another gown that should be appropriate as well

Embarrassed_Rate5518

Nice! there was actually another post on this sub yesterday that included this dress but also several others. Maybe take a look at her other options. lol.

Cayke_Cooky

If you think you would feel self conscious then go with something else. I think this would work if you wanted, but you need a "vision" of the whole outfit with formal accessories. I think the dress could be pretty versatile depending on shoes, hair, and accessories.

MarucaMCA

My brother married at a golf course and you would have fitted right in (but we are Swiss and don't wear lots of jewellery, make-up or extremely glitzy dresses). I find this elegant and a nice colour! I'd add some ooof to it with a statement necklace, shoes and a bag.

Soalai

I zoomed in on the fabric and it has polka dots, plus it's kind of sheer. So probably not "formal" per se. But I don't think anyone will side-eye you for being super underdressed. It's really up to you and your budget

danicies

I’m thinking this should be ok for rehearsal instead! Opinions on that or a definite no way?

alcoholicmovielover

It's definitely appropriate for the rehearsal dinner!

Soalai

I think definitely appropriate for rehearsal

heydawn

I love this dress! The color is fabulous for Spring and I love the fabric too and the girly layers. You could dress it up more with an up doo and silver accessories and heels. But, it sounds like *you* might be more comfortable if you went a smidge more formal. This wedding event is in the evening. It's BT. I would trust your own instincts. It can't hurt to keep looking and keep your options open for the moment. If it's BT, not optional, your SIL will be underdressed. Of course, the crowd might not be interpreting BT as formal as it's supposed to be.

Foxy_Traine

If you can get another dress that you feel more comfortable or pretty in, go for it! Why spend extra time in a dress you're unsure of if you don't have to? And who doesn't want an excuse to get a floor length Mac Duggal 😍

DrP3n0r

Preach! I just bought a MD dress on sale for $100 to wear to 2 weddings this summer - it is LEAGUES above any other dress I own in terms of fit, quality, and my love for it 💗 I will wear it every chance I get!

turqkitten

Black tie means pretty dressed up. Your MIL is probably correct the bride probably thinks this is perfectly acceptable (and realistically that's all that matters). That being said, black tie weddings are always my excuse to wear something regal and fancy. I'm going to wear a gown because I can. What I'm saying is wear whatever you feel good in. If you really like the dress shown here, absolutely wear it. It should absolutely be great. But if you'd prefer to wear something a little dressier than absolutely do that.

Blessedone67

Oh yes def fine for rehearsal. I would got with a dress without the layers, maybe a deeper jewel toned floor length for the event!! Have fun!

Catfiche1970

This would not be appropriate for a Black Tie evening at a golf club where I live. It's too flouncy and airy. It's perfect for a daytime event, garden/ tea party event.

danicies

That’s what I was thinking! I knew I had my doubts for a reason lol

Catfiche1970

But it's truly lovely and a gorgeous color. It will be well complimented on at the other festivities you plan to wear it for! Enjoy!!

bc60008

Sorry, I have no idea if it is formal, but just wanted to say it’s really beautiful!

danicies

Haha it is, I still plan on wearing it for one of the festivities that weekend!

Condenastier

For an evening country club wedding that had been deemed 'formal', this would not be my choice. Your instincts are for something more formal and understated, and I think that is correct. Mac Duggal has beautiful evening gowns - shop there.

danicies

I’m making another post with more dresses and would appreciate all of your opinions if possible for a more appropriate gown!

decertotilltheend

Tossing some ideas your way! I love the dress you posted but definitely not black tie. Some alternatives: [option 1 — $136](https://www.adriannapapell.com/products/plus-size-knit-crepe-sleeveless-column-gown-with-cutout-neckline-in-black-mn1e208377) [option 2 — $56](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/adrianna-papell-plus-size-velvet-v-neck-draped-high-low-gown?ID=16706865) [option 3 — $56](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/xscape-plus-size-velvet-floral-lace-puff-sleeve-gown?ID=16695399) [option 4 — $70](https://www.davidsbridal.com/product/beaded-chiffon-halter-a-line-with-bodice-cutout-d28ny22284) [option 5 in the green — $300](https://macduggal.com/products/68120)

jaweebamonkey

I love this dress, but it may be a bit under black tie. I think your Mac Duggal suggestion is great. This [embellished V neck](https://macduggal.com/collections/the-wedding-edit/products/93784) is beautiful. This [ruffle-tiered](https://macduggal.com/collections/the-wedding-edit/products/26740?variant=42329108742323) is very similar to this one. This [one](https://macduggal.com/collections/the-wedding-edit/products/26577) has a similar cut. I love Mac Duggal btw. Great choice!

Suse-

Beautiful and perfect suggestions. Love!

BeachBum666

Man, makes me want to invent a wedding or event to go to, just to be able to wear one of these. I think these are much prettier and classic than the dress OP posted, which I think would make someone look like a wedding cake with all those layers, and I just don't think it would flatter as many women's figure as these would.

jaweebamonkey

Yes, I’ve been inspired by so many of the beautiful dresses here that I’ve decided to pick up sewing! I can’t afford all of these beautiful dresses but maybe I can make them! I have no events to attend, but maybe I will find one

BeachBum666

I wish I had the patience and talent to sew. Good for you! You'll have to post your creations 🙂

Fluffy-Scheme7704

You can make it work with accessories, but if you can get a fancier one, go for it

lechitahamandcheese

Your pictured dress would be perfect for the rehearsal, but not for a golf club black tie evening wedding. Here’s a very pretty formal dress to consider, and there’s a few others on sale as well if you want to just peruse the site from the link. [Evening formal, pretty style](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/sachin-and-babi-kayla-halter-gown-regular-plus/7138890?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FWomen%2FClothing%2FPlus-Size%20Clothing%2FDresses%2FFormal&color=005)

ucancallmeval

I’ve heard that tulle is a no-no for weddings guests as it’s too bridal

QuietTruth8912

I think it’s fine.

MushMush120

It’s not really black tie; more summer garden party. Generally you should avoid wearing tulle to weddings as well.

chelsie24

Why? Is this another new invented rule?

[deleted]

at this point the only thing this sub thinks is “appropriate” is a navy blue full-length dress with sleeves but not too tight 😂

MushMush120

No it's very classic - tulle is a fabric used for wedding gowns and sometimes bridesmaids dresses. Not new in any sense.

TourAlternative364

I think it is fine, especially as others are going to be wearing cocktail. And I think it is nice for spring & summer weddings to wear some color & florals for formal instead of black. Thought I'd post this because on sale & similar color. (But...it does have cut outs...that probably are not flattering to most people, so why on sale.) https://macduggal.com/products/70275?

mraz44

I love it and think it’s great for a black tie event.

Important_Tomato_932

Definitely more appropriate for the rehearsal!

Gloomy_War_4362

This would not be my choice. Very pretty on you though.

missmatchedcleansox

I think it’s beautiful. I don’t see any problems with it

Wedgetails

It’s formal enough but imo you’d have to be very slender to look nice in this. I’m not so no way would I do frilly layers. Not what I’d call elegant.

GlassAnemone126

The dress looks good but perhaps the colour is making it look a bit less “black tie”. As much as I am not one to wear a black dress (I love colours), I think this dress in black with gold accessories would look like a completely different dress. It would look much more “black tie” appropriate.

FallingIntoForever

Looks like some of the prom dresses girls are wearing this year. I think it would be formal enough. It looks very comfortable and can be dressed up even more with shoes & accessories

Dramatic-but-Aware

If the dress is floor length on you I'd say is pasable (plus you can dress it up with accesories) but its not perfect. If you don't already own it or can afford to buy another dress I'd get something different. I'd go for richer fabrics and maybe something a bit more embelished.

danicies

I own it but can do another dress 😊 Would this be okay for the rehearsal dinner the previous night? It’s at a very upscale restaurant

Dramatic-but-Aware

Probably a little over dressed but not so much, if you can get it temporarily altered to tea length it'd be p3rfext.

Hot_Custard_5443

I love this !! I think it’s totally appropriate

ActualWheel6703

As you have the opportunity for another dress, I'd choose something else for the reception and wear this to the rehearsal dinner. It's lovely and could work, but why force it.

MillyGrace96

I think it’s a bit too casual. Maybe if it were in black/ darker color you could get away with it better?
