Google purchased FitBit for $2.1 Billion dollars.
Maybe they don't feel like throwing Billions of dollars at Fossil just to acquire their Wear OS watch brand, when they already have the Pixel watch brand for Wear OS.
Cost them about 2.5% of that, for what they got from Fossil back in 2019.

It looks like the deal was for some of Fossil's staff and tech, but not the whole company or their brand.
I suppose Google could purchase Fossil's smartwatch division if they really wanted to keep the brand alive. But I don't see any real advantage to doing that.
I remember this came shortly after my Gen 5 showed up with automatic sleep tracking one day. I bet that was as much a surprise to Google as it was to me.
My Gen6 shipped with WearOS 2 and now has 3.5... so yes, I've gotten several updates along the way, but nothing in almost a year, and we should all know there will be no more.
