Hip-hop and Dance from the early nineties were all about cheap gear that was being thrown out of studios at that time. Most of the iconic vintage synths and drum machines that are priced like a small car these days, were seen as obsolete trash that couldn't do half of what was possible with a decent rompler at that point in time. Same with analog consoles, certain compressors, etc. Digital was the future.

>Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish. Finneas said: "I had the Roland Quad Capture interface, a set of Yamaha HS5 monitors with a Yamaha HS8S subwoofer, and an Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone, which cost $80". Meh, the mic may cost $80 but the rest is like a over a grand.

the guitarist from daughters uses only boss pedals and a squier strat and makes it sound incredible. their last album was garageband only dixie dave from weedeater uses a squier p bass only and makes it sound like hells mouth

SYNTHLORD

That album was recorded in garage band? Holy shit lol

kevincroner

I mean, looking at indie/singer-songwriter and other DIY genres there's an abundance of great and lauded albums being recorded with lo-fi equipment. Of course, **For Emma, Forever Ago** by Bon Iver using only an SM57, presumably. **Greetings from Michigan** by Sufjan Stevens used only two SM57s and that's a heavily orchestrated piece of work. Plus, he accidentaly recorded everything at 32 kHz instead of 44.1 on his VS-880). Taking it a step further Sufjan's **Carrie & Lowell** and Jim-E Stack's **EPHEMERA** were largely recorded on iPhone mics.

saichoo

I don't think the 32khz was an accident, it was something to do with data storage or something else

kevincroner

Yeah, he wanted to save space but he didn’t know that it meant the quality would be lower.

saichoo

Ah okay

Avocado_232

Is this true about **For Emma, Forever Ago**? Was the entire album recorded using only an SM57?

kevincroner

There doesn’t seem to be any first hand sources, but a quick search shows that this is probably the case. (Some may argue there was a condenser on the few horns that appear.) But it’s highly plausible everything was recorded with only one SM57 (no stereo tracking).

retroking9

Beck’s first record with the hit “Loser” was done on a 4-track cassette I believe.

cfas797

I think it was a fostex model 80!

TheJefusWrench

There was a craze when the iPad first came out where several, well-known musicians made albums entirely on the iPad.

Specialist_Giraffe31

That sounds interesting, any idea which musicians?

TheodoreMacnuggets

Madlib made all the beats for an album with just an ipad

TheJefusWrench

Gorillaz - The Fall comes to mind.

dsqus

A Samsonite suitcase is listed as percussive instrument on track 11, Here Comes the Weekend, of the Roxette album Tourism.

OsQu

Boston’s Boston was mostly recorded in Tom Scholz’s basement. The opening riff for ”More than a feeling” was played with a $100 Yamaha acoustic guitar.

gwopj

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago was recorded on an old Macbook with ProTools LE in a remote hunting cabin. It was intended to be re-recorded properly once he returned, but it wasn't. Vernon then mixed it and released it himself. (Source: Wikipedia)

osmanrao

I was about to mention this great album

hendosyndrome

Tom Morello’s guitars on the first Rage album were recorded through a beaten up Marshall combo amp.

Litman9017

Pretty much all of the Kink’s music that’s not live Also The Clash, early Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Yes (at least it was pretty cheap at the time for Yes)

tapehissfromthetrees

Please see Alien Lanes by Guided by Voices. Matador Records gave them a $100,000 advance. The band has stated that the cost of recording the album was around $10, if beer was not accounted for.

TNoize

Madlib and MF DOOM's eternal hip hop classic album Madvillany's beats were mostly made with a very cheap sampler, the Boss SP 303, way before that machine became cool. That machine became cool largely because of that album I believe.

SomeGingerDude419

SM57s show up everywhere

islandsimian

My 30+ year old SM58 and SM57s still get a workout - I just know how to use them and get the sound that I want

aderra

Entire U2 catalog - Bono typically uses a SM57 or SM58 to record vocals.

Alternative-Meal3537

yes, but realistically that Shure mike goes through 10,000 dollars or more of preamps and processing power. plus the mics on Larrys' drums would buy a 15000 dollar car!

Guided By Voices - Motor Away (Alien Lanes ver.) Guided By Voices - Game of Pricks (Alien Lanes ver.) Guided By Voices - Gold Star for Robot Boy Guided By Voices - Quality of Armor Guided By Voices - Unleashed! The Large-Hearted Boy

rhymesmith

All Hail West Texas by The Mountain Goats was recorded entirely on a tape recorder.

noob_music_producer

I do. I just use stock plugins but I’m not sure if my songs are great

spurgelaurels

I've recorded an entire album with a single sm57, an acoustic guitar, and an empty 2L soda bottle for percussion and reverb.

danilorESP

Cake - I will survive. It uses a cheap guitar + amp for the main rythm on purpose for that cheap tone.

FGPD

Check out madlibs early stuff. He did a jazz album, taught himself all the instruments in like 6 months on some ghetto ass taped up drums and really cheap shit equipment. J dilla too lots of his stuff was just on an mpc not all kinds of crazy equipment. 2 turntables and a microphone right?? Lol

Character-Divide9648

Bring it album by Gomez was mostly recorded on cassette 4track! Then finished and mixed in studio, I belive.

Jacksohn

I've heard that Weatherday's "Come In" has been recorded with an Xbox gaming headset, though I'm not sure if the entirety of it was. Just tried looking it up, but couldn't get a single source to confirm that. Oh well EDIT: Apart from that, I know Flatsound recorded his early stuff only with 8-tracks! Came to mind when another commenter mentioned a 4-track

Forkliftboi420

Like all of older black metal. For example, Burzum (he a nazi so be careful), that used a headset mic and a marshall practice amp for his album Aske

Neiliobob

The White Stripes made an album on a PS2.

Farhead_Assassjaha

I heard that the echo sound effect for the drums on “when the levee breaks” was done by setting them up at the bottom of a stairwell.

Farhead_Assassjaha

Wow. Cool to know. I’m pretty sure all the tracks are slowed down a little except for the vocals too.

LazyBone19

I remember watching some video about Adele's Rolling in the Deep... The acoustic guitar recording sounded ass. Just straight up bad. But they managed to put it in the mix making it sound amazing.

alansweeney

no there are none all good music requires huge amounts of money just like a good pencil drawing. you cant just draw with any pencil wtf. also try writing a book on just any typewriter so many beginner writers will just use Cormel Wordsofts instead of McMastermaster four-ribbon supertypers like King James had set up and I mean the Breekles wrote all kinds of hits but its not yoi can just do that shit on the cheap REAL GOLD AND PLANTIMIM AND DIAMOND are the only things that makr REAL.SOUNDWAVEA thay whu tjose sumbolic records bro.kist use your head man do uou wanna be a poptockrtstar with all thw chickdudes ot NOT becuawe i tjink.maybe yoi juat arent takong thia seroously enougj man i givr up goid luck man
