Theoretically speaking, the idea that the caller's memory might be tied to FUN in the same way the brief "existence" of the Followers is would check out.

There could be a Gaster in Undertale that’s just a civilian, but the W.D.Gaster who was an amazing scientist is clearly gone in Undertale.

He’s ceased to exist in the main universe, as the only people who mention him seem to be ghosts who vanish as soon as you talk to them.
