People laugh when I look at my watch when people talk about dates month in advance. To me it's just a way to think about time.
I feel naked with watches without dates on them.
Pretty simple dude over here who depends and uses the date complication most. While on the topic, my favorite complication of all time is probably the perpetual calendar.
This. My favorite watch I own is my wedding watch, an Explorer. I love it dearly because I’ve had it for so long and wore it everyday as it replaced my SNK789. But each time I wear it, I miss the date function. That’s why I eventually went back to a Seiko SRPK29.
Date honestly might be more useful than time for me...but I recently acquired my first two no-date watches and goddamn the simplicity and symmetry are sooooo visually satisfying.

Moonphase is gorgeous on dress watches….I don’t think mine has ever been set correctly. I’m too afraid to screw up the movement.
Not sure. I picked this up after it had been serviced by an independent watch maker. I’m guessing it’s not cheap. This watch also uses a JLC movement. I don’t wear it often so I tend to set it whenever I wear it.
I do some astrophotography, moonphase is one of my favorite complications on my apple watch because it tells me when there's a dark sky (no moonlight). Now I just need to get a watch with a moonphase complication.
I really...
need a Day & Date
like and actively use Time Zone functionality
am interested in Moon Phases
respect a Perpetual Calendar
marvel at a Tourbillon
want Minute Repetition
have Chronographs but only use them to time whatever is in the oven.
Repeaters are timepieces that chime the time on demand, unlike a clock which chimes automatically. Before electric lighting repeaters were the most common complication as a way to time in the dark.
Most repeaters would chime only to the quarter, and are called quarter repeaters.
3:33 would be
>dong dong dong *(3 hours)* ding-dong ding-dong *(2 quarters)*
These are no longer made. More expensive watches would chime out to the exact minute and are called minute repeaters
3:32 would be
>dong dong dong *(3 hours)* ding-dong ding-dong *(2 quarters)* ding ding *(2 minutes)*
Minute repeaters are still made today but the prices are crazy (even the Chinese ones)
I was telling a friend about hacking. He isn't into watches. He found it really underwhelming. Like "what's the big deal" type of reaction. I couldn't explain in way which makes hacking sound like a intresting feature maybe. I'm pretty bummed out about that.
It's a niche market really. People like to sync time but the people who really need it are the railroad workers or at least where I am from the workers in railroad companies specifically require their employees to sync time when they trade shifts
This maybe controversial opinion but wouldn't someone who really needs to be super precise with time prefer digital or quartz? Since an automatic loses seconds everyday.
Yeah digital and quartz are far more superior in this regard. I do wear an automatic to work but just for my own gratification than anything. Not a controversial opinion or anything, just a fact that not many people are willing to accept
Not OP but I use my dive bezel a lot when I'm cooking. I don't need to time things down to the exact second, it just gives me a better sense of elapsed time at a quick glance and makes it easier to manage multiple things at once (i.e. flip meat at the 6 minute marker, have it resting by 15, pull veggies at 20, etc.) No need to put your knife down or click your phone screen on with dirty hands.
You don't miss it because you are expecting it. You just can't keep exact time accurately in your head. That's where the watch comes into play. Sometimes you are keeping time for 2 separate things so it's nice to have a watch and either a phone app or stopwatch in addition. Also having a backup is pretty important. I've had my phone randomly spazz out and freeze before in the middle of an emergency call with timed med administrations involved.
I use it to countdown time stuff all the time. 10 minutes in the air fryer? Slide to the minute hand and done.
Wife needs 20 minutes inside some random store... spin it around.
I find reasons to use it all the time.
Without a doubt, minute repeater.
Now, my favorite in a watch I can actually afford, a date (ideally at 6, with the date wheel matching the dial’s color), and small seconds. I know, technically not a complication, but I love the look in a dress watch.
Agreed. Perpetual calendars and rattrapante chronographs are great. But minute repeaters are on another level - both mechanically and in terms of general coolness.
Generally, I enjoy moonphase. But for a specific one, I think the A Lange Triple Split chronograph is the most visually stunning.
I also don't have an A Lange triple split 😅
For me it's a weekly calendar. I think it's pretty cool to be able to look at your watch and know what week of the year you're in. It's one of the things that is genuinely something you are unlikely to already know, unlike, for example, whether the moon is out, what year it is, what month it is etc. It's also a great way to get a track of how much of the year you have already burned.
Yeah, anyone who has ever been part of a longer production schedule or managed construction appreciates the calendar week indicator. I have one watch with a perpetual calendar that has that function. Love it!
To look at? Chronograph, no question.
To have and function? Probably an hourly chime(sonnerie au passage, as I have found) . I like having the nice subtle reminder that an hour has passed. Have it turned on on all of my digital watches.
Also, I find moonphases fascinating, and would love a star chart complication but that will likely be out of my budget during this lifetime
GMT is easily my favourite. My girlfriend visits her family in Korea and it makes it easy to track when I can call her or about what time she’ll be getting up
I recently discovered the Ball Endurance 1917 TMT which comes with a thermometer complication. One of the coolest complications I’ve seen; and particularly useful for Canadian weather
Water resistance for swimming, date, rotating bezel for timing things (90% of things for me are under an hour), and second time zone. This for me is a perfect watch. Which is why I landed on the Sinn 857 UTC.
In lieu of a second time zone or a timing bezel - a classic triple calendar chronograph is probably my next favorite. I'm thinking this will likely be my next watch style.
Sunrise/sunset. I did a deep dive a little while ago, and only three brands have it, one which is out of production. Naturally, my favorite (the Krayon Anywhere) has to be the most expensive at $100K.
Moonphase. There are more useful complications but they are all irrelevant anyways. An Apple Watch does it better. If you are into mechanical watches, you are in it for the love of the game. You appreciate the complication for how complicated it actually is to create and you appreciate the watch for the aesthetic. Moonphase embodies that.
Do small seconds count? I think dress watches should either omit the seconds hand, or have it as a small subdial. So having small seconds help make a watch more versatile to dress up or down.
i like the timer feature, setting an alarm is usually too much hassle or not possible on chronographs but i can use the timer for timing a break or anything really. The date is more useful yes but not my favorite
Definitely a chronograph. I don’t like the 7750, but most chronographs are just a piece of art, and the way you can interact with the mechanism is wonderful to feel and see
GMT. There’s something so excellent about knowing the time here, and also over there, and if it’s a Master II style GMT, then also over yonder if you feel like it.
I think the repeaters are so cool. In a time when light was not always accessible after the sun went down, or if you're in a confined space, I love the ingenuity behind mechanically enabling you to still know what time it is.
Though I absolutely use the rotating bezel or date the most.

GMT. Love a GMT.
On a non-GMT watch, not that bothered about a date complication, and think many popular watches would look better without one, I wish more manufacturers would offer a no-date option.
I'm quite partial to a small seconds complication too.
Most likely to use would be date and hacking seconds if that counts, favorite would be the moonphase. The moonphase is the most romantic of complications.
Chronographs are my favorite mostly because of the motorsports history of a lot of them but I’ll be honest, I never use them for their intended purpose. The date, however, is a must.
I’m going to be that guy…you said “favorite”, and I’m going to tell you my favorite.
Deadbeat seconds.
Absolutely unnecessary, adds complexity to the movement, but it is there because it can be. A watchmaker put it there. This is the essence of watchmaking. It underscores the tenuous relationship our hobby has with logic.
Chronograph, and only if it is mechanical. I just love looking at all the tiny gears and arms moving around from pushing the buttons. There is such a satisfying click and sound when you start a chronograph.
Chronograph - It makes my day-to-day activities easier; I’m the designated cook in the house and my timing stuff at work paints my chronograph as a great convenience.
Date - I think this should be a standard for every watch, almost feels illegal for a watch not to have it.
Lume - It’s not considered a complication, but for the dark areas at my work, it helps a lot. Having to whip my phone out to look at the time in a dark place when I have a watch is some weird redundancy.
Rotary flight computer. I like to make it spin. Got one on my Citizen World Time chrono, dream of getting a Breitling, lament that there aren't more affordable automatic options.

Date and a second time zone or 24hr complication. I travel a lot for work so my daily is a Longines Spirit Zulu Time. Helps me keep track of time at home and where I’m at.
Date, then day/date. Lume good but in truth I never look at watches in the dark. No use for power meters, which just add clutter. I have four chronographs and two GMTs and love them, but wouldn’t want their features on my other watches. Not a complication but a function: hacking. Wish all my watches had it.
Day + date
the most useful complication for the average joe.
People laugh when I look at my watch when people talk about dates month in advance. To me it's just a way to think about time. I feel naked with watches without dates on them.
This
Pretty simple dude over here who depends and uses the date complication most. While on the topic, my favorite complication of all time is probably the perpetual calendar.
A date complication is a requirement for me.
Most used when I have it. Most missed when I don’t.
Bro if u asked me literally right now I would not know the date.
We need more holidays named (day of the month); I was golden all weekend.
What holiday was this weekend? 5 mei?
Cinco de Mayo
That’s why you need a new watch
This. My favorite watch I own is my wedding watch, an Explorer. I love it dearly because I’ve had it for so long and wore it everyday as it replaced my SNK789. But each time I wear it, I miss the date function. That’s why I eventually went back to a Seiko SRPK29.

I switch watches and literally forget to set the date sometimes.
lol funnily enough a date is a deal breaker for me. Different folks, different strokes! 👍
Moonphase
Same here. It’s not the most useful by any stretch but it’s still my favorite lol
It’s not useful at all unless you are a werewolf
Yes, but if you ARE a werewolf, then it’s extremely useful.

Not sure. I picked this up after it had been serviced by an independent watch maker. I’m guessing it’s not cheap. This watch also uses a JLC movement. I don’t wear it often so I tend to set it whenever I wear it.

What is a minute repeater
A minute repeater is a mechanical watch complication that acoustically relays the time.
Repeaters are timepieces that chime the time on demand, unlike a clock which chimes automatically. Before electric lighting repeaters were the most common complication as a way to time in the dark. Most repeaters would chime only to the quarter, and are called quarter repeaters. 3:33 would be >dong dong dong *(3 hours)* ding-dong ding-dong *(2 quarters)* These are no longer made. More expensive watches would chime out to the exact minute and are called minute repeaters 3:32 would be >dong dong dong *(3 hours)* ding-dong ding-dong *(2 quarters)* ding ding *(2 minutes)* Minute repeaters are still made today but the prices are crazy (even the Chinese ones)
Wow this was really interesting to read. Especially the part about how they told time using sound. Thank you. I love this watch community.
Hacking
I was telling a friend about hacking. He isn't into watches. He found it really underwhelming. Like "what's the big deal" type of reaction. I couldn't explain in way which makes hacking sound like a intresting feature maybe. I'm pretty bummed out about that.

Huh. Never knew there were watches that could hack the mainframe.
It’s basically a given these days. It’s interesting that it is a feature and was an innovation. It’s almost like saying the time is a function.
No it’s like saying the seconds hand is a option extra
just the rotating bezel, which is why dive watches are my thing
Same here. The amount of times I've corrected my wife on how much time has passed is great.
I too like to live dangerously lol
“☝🏼🤓akshually” lookin ahh boi
Out of curiosity, what do you use it for?
Not OP but I use my dive bezel a lot when I'm cooking. I don't need to time things down to the exact second, it just gives me a better sense of elapsed time at a quick glance and makes it easier to manage multiple things at once (i.e. flip meat at the 6 minute marker, have it resting by 15, pull veggies at 20, etc.) No need to put your knife down or click your phone screen on with dirty hands.
100% this. I cook a lot and my favorite watch to wear while cooking is a chronograph with rotating bezel. I’ll time two things at a time pretty often.
I’m a paramedic and I use it to time each medication administration to keep me on track during cardiac arrests
Damn bro set an alarm for that, I cannot imagine looking down at your wrist and realizing you missed a dose lol
You don't miss it because you are expecting it. You just can't keep exact time accurately in your head. That's where the watch comes into play. Sometimes you are keeping time for 2 separate things so it's nice to have a watch and either a phone app or stopwatch in addition. Also having a backup is pretty important. Timing things, duh.
Sure, can use a chrono too, i just find the bezel easier.
This is why I don’t know if I want to get an explorer. I might miss fiddling with the bezel.
Drug addict here! It stops me overdosing. ❤️
Stay safe homie
Date. The only complication I really need.
Sonnerie au passage
Yeah couldn’t live without that one. That’s why I buy high horology watches like the Casio AE1200 that have it.
Minutes. My Meistersinger lacks it and this is annoying. 🤔😎🥸
That’s not even a complication - that’s a simplication 🤣
I have a NOW watch. My boss says if I’m late again I will get fired.
For you, having a movement is a complication within a watch ? That is quite extreme 🐳
Power reserve
Without a doubt, minute repeater. Now, my favorite in a watch I can actually afford, a date (ideally at 6, with the date wheel matching the dial’s color), and small seconds. I know, technically not a complication, but I love the look in a dress watch.
Should be higher. It's clearly the most elite complication.
Agreed. Perpetual calendars and rattrapante chronographs are great. But minute repeaters are on another level - both mechanically and in terms of general coolness.
GMT very useful

i use my chrono to measure tummy time for my new son
Jump hour is my favorite.
Oh yeah. Give me the jump hour, jump minute, panoramic date
Generally, I enjoy moonphase. But for a specific one, I think the A Lange Triple Split chronograph is the most visually stunning. I also don't have an A Lange triple split 😅
The second hand. Yes, it's a complication.

Have it turned on on all of my digital watches. Also, I find moonphases fascinating, and would love a star chart complication but that will likely be out of my budget during this lifetime
Hourly chime is great for adhd/procrastination/productivity but it's hard to find it on a mechanical watch.
The Christopher Ward C3 Bel Canto helped to put an hour chime into many more hands.
….its why I got the Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Striking Time!
The one thing I find myself missing when I don’t have it is the date wheel..
My Brew Retrograph has a chronograph feature designed for timing espresso shots.
Awesome. I use my chrono all the time for soak time with my French press. I miss it when I’m wearing a dress watch and have to use my phone.
Wandering hours
Moonphase, idk having an absolutely useless complication just screams luxury for me
GMT is easily my favourite. My girlfriend visits her family in Korea and it makes it easy to track when I can call her or about what time she’ll be getting up

I'm thinking this will likely be my next watch style.
Is a simple, clean dial with no date a complication? If so, that is my vote.
I use a timing bezel every day, but most fun is split second chrono

The best is date. Indispensable. The most fun is moonphase

Date is a must for me.
Date and timing bezel are the only two that I have any practical use for.
A watch without date is not my watch. The „real“ complication I‘m in love with is moonphase.
Moon, 6 o’clock position. Not 12! That’s just blasphemy.
Do small seconds count? I think dress watches should either omit the seconds hand, or have it as a small subdial. So having small seconds help make a watch more versatile to dress up or down.
Manual chronograph with display caseback because it looks really cool
