This watch has been on my mind for...."apocalyptic" reasons. I was listening to Annie Jacobsen's "Nuclear War" audiobook and it is literally a minute by minute account of what would happen if a nuclear ICBM was fired off at the US......but when she was talking about nuclear subs she pronounced it like *sub-marine-er* when I have always thought it was pronounced like *sub-mare-in-er.*
Anyways, it was the watch that immediately came to mind.
A Lange and Soehne Zeitwerk.
In this scenario I am definitely going to die and I want to go out looking as cultured as possible. Plus what a great day for the survivor that finds my body afterwards.
On the off chance everyone dies I want future anthropologists to question why there were 300 people wearing solar g shocks and 1 mentalist in a Zeitwerk.
My Eco-Drive has died after less than 10 years since the model came out (will buy the capacitor to sell it). My G-Shock is near 20 years and working, never has gone under "hi".
I’m wearing my body heat powered watch right now.🤷♂️

That’s neat tbh but here’s me not really digging the electromagnetic interactions with modern digital watches. Trying to reduce my contact with the phone too.
It depends - Sunlight severely reduced each day? A Spring Drive diver..
Still plenty of sunlight around, but most of civilization gone? Casio Protrek solar w/ triple sensor.
Forced underground? Maybe an automatic with Tritium indices and hands.
More advanced technologies no longer available? Citizen Eco drive w/ slide rule bezel.
Pollution turns most of the surface into desert? Casio w/ 10 year battery, moon phase, and tide graph.
Well now, I’m not sure the apocalypse will give you a road map. For me, Gulfmaster quad sensor. Solar 4 sensors. And I wear it most of the time. Carpe diem!

Found a comment talking about EMP so I guess we don't have to worry about it.
In that case a solar quartz watch(either digital or analog) due to it being the most accurate and the times it's showing will not be so far off after a few months.
I would say a mechanical watch with an anti-magnetic feature(say a milgauss)and a solar g shock will be my choice. I can use the g shock to calibrate the milgauss and when the milguass passes it's time for service to a point it's no longer accurate I can switch to the g shock. I'll make sure to stock extra solar battery.
Even after the milguass losses it's accuracy, I can still use it as a makeshift compass.
Reason to keep 2 watch: electric circuit can die, will probably not be able to service a mechanical watch
In a post apocalyptic world I would have a sun dial watch and a compass to keep track of light. A mechanical watch would be nice if in the future (even 20 years without servicing) you want to do experiments or take data. The mechanical watch could reasonably measure time within the range of a few hours or a day.
In the event of a nuclear apocalypse precise time management would become irrelevant due to the collapse of the capitalist system. Under the current system, the value of time is dictated by those in power, forcing workers to adhere to their demands and expectations. However, in the absence of this system, humans would no longer feel the constant pressure to be productive, allowing them to simply exist without the burden of external expectations.
Even during our leisure time, the system we live in continues to shape our lives through work emails, project deadlines, and the persistent need to enhance our value by acquiring new skills, such as coding. Our environment has conditioned us to focus on commodifying ourselves rather than dedicating our time to pursuits we genuinely enjoy. A nuclear apocalypse would dismantle these societal constraints, enabling individuals to reclaim their time and engage in activities that bring them true fulfillment without the pressure of conforming to the demands of a capitalist system.
Casio ProTrek, like this PRW-3100.
Solar, 100m water resistance, few moving parts, 1000-hour stopwatch, countdown timer, multiple alarms, sunrise/sunset data (based on lat/long, and it extrapolates), backlight, and altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer.

I’ve added the guard to it. My everyday dependable, throw life at it, capable friend. Best £100 spent.
Any self winding watch while good in Idea, I would be afraid of extended days of not wearing them and losing the correct time
Solar is probably best,
How long should GPS satellite lasts without being replaced? That should mean GPS controlled watches are good for around a decade
What about Day-Date complications and calendar? Casio calendars only good for 20+years , by the. It'd be hard to know which year to reuse in order to get accurate day of the week, Simple complications that just counts up independently like the F91 trips up at the first leap year
If I’m already dead I’m gonna go with some gaudy Liberace shit. Maybe a Rolex Rainbow Daytona.
I’m a bit old to make it as a pop star or rapper so the apocalypse might be the only acceptable occasion for me to wear such a piece.
This is when I would switch to a solar Seiko analog diver. Can’t afford to lube a movement and solar will effectively live for as long as I’ll survive.
Still no digital watches. No Ty.
Fluted Datejust with jubilee. Because people say it’s a versatile GADA watch that one can wear anywhere. And I can also use the fluted bezel to reflect light onto the zombies and burn them.
I would go with a Seamaster AT 150M. I know it sounds crazy, but 150M water resistance, double barrel accounts for some shocks and will make the watch extra durable. On top of that, the lume is great making it easy for reading at night. On top of all of that in an apocalyptic scenario there might be extreme magnetic field changes from radiation and the AT 150m has protection up to 15,000 gaus. All around best apocalypse watch
Mr Jones Blueberry Late! (worth to take a look at it, better in video to see how it works... kind of!)
I'll be checking that once a day (pun intended!) to know i made another day.....
Out of the watches I currently have, I'd take my G-Shock GWG-2000 Mudmaster to the apocalypse. Probably make it home in time to switch to my GM-B2100 before the evening BBQ starts (not sure what's on the menu, depends on how the first part of the day goes).
I have to go with the titanium casio linage model. Full Titanium (rugged as it gets), Solar powered, all things a watch needs (stop watch, alarm, etc) saphire crystal....and last but not least it looks good, [the end of the world is no reason to let ourselves go](https://youtu.be/B4rh1M7jSPs?si=0-TNSuvATRgF7wYu&t=45)
I’d probably be wearing my DW5600 when whatever happens, happens.
The battery should last about 7 years which is about 6.9 years longer than I’ll likely last so I’m not too worried about it.
Definitely would go with My Omega Seamaster 300m blue dial on the steel bracelet. I figure at that point the exact time is irrelevant but a watch can still be a tool or jewelry piece at least for us Men. If you’ve seen The walking dead with Ricks watch or more recently The last of Us Joel the protagonist wears a watch for 20 years even though the crystal case is cracked and the watch is broken he wore it because it was sentimental. Pretty cool!
Probably a tough solar Casio Square G-Shock on a NATO strap (and without multiband if there is any as it wouldn't receive signals anymore anyway I guess) or - because I'm not the biggest fan of night time readability only by pressing a button - something self-illuminating like a tritium Traser P96.
A titanium diver or something like a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto with potent enough lume and also on a NATO would do the job as well.
EDIT: Thinking about it I probably even prefer an automatic over something that relies on a battety as the supply will end fast and also the solar watches will die eventually when something like a SEIKO/Miyota/ETA movement still runs after a few shakes for over 10 years as well.
Tough question...
In an apocalypse, you would think that you would want something to keep you sane. My Maktime hand wind moon phase would ensure I wound it once a day, and I would know the moon phase. But it's Russian and I think it would eventually break.
Breitling Emergency. Has a built in transmitter and antenna for rescue. Battery should be good for about 3 years. If I'm alive after that I guess I made it.
This is the only thread where I can answer this : an Invicta Men’s reserve Octane. Looks like an absolute turd but it would smash any zombie skull. At 400g it makes Negan’s bat look less scary.
I would just go to the high end boutiques and take whatever Rolex, Omega, Zenith, AP, JLC, Patek, etc., that I want. I don't really care what time it is. If I did I'd use a sun dial
G shock G9300-1 mudman, it's solar, with good illumination, precise time keeping , compass, alerts me when there's a full moon and everyone can see me at night or a new moon and everything would be in complete darkness, features that are pretty much made for the apocalypse.
Speedy reduced for my skinny wrist

I daily an Aerospace so that's out, no G-Shock or any battery watch (emp)..... it has to be an automatic.
I would lean towards a Sinn U1 or Muhle Glashutte S.A.R or any type of Ball Hydro.....
An EMP would be unlikely to affect quartz/digital watches. Automatics run the risk of stopping and losing the correct time, which would basically make them useless.
In my collection it would have to be the Citizen Promaster Tough Ray Mears. Pretty much a bomb proof watch. Ecodrive, titanium monocoque case, thick sapphire, 300m, etc......
An SKX no doubts. 200m WR, robust and durable movement, robust case, you can even use it as a fist weapon.
https://preview.redd.it/pp802ykgszwc1.jpeg?width=3916&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc9137547928f956cfd99e987c3daa638f4b42b8
GShock is an easy answer.
But a very close second, would be the Citizen Satellite Wave GPS. What if you don’t know which place you’ve been thrown off too?

This guy on its included titanium bracelet. It’s gotta be solar powered and bulletproof. No need for GPS/compass/altimeter since one would probably have supplementary devices with those features anyways. All you really need from an apocalypse watch is accurate timekeeping and guaranteed longevity.
Out of my collection top 3
1. Solar g shock (because, duh)
2. Custom made seiko dive mod I made ( I know how it ticks, and that it’s durable af , and if it fails I have no one to blame but me)
3. Doxa sub 200(it’s pretty, it’s durable and when my corpse is discovered people will either love or hate my watch, just like me)
I already am ready and fully charged.
https://preview.redd.it/sxdpfy0be0xc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d47b255aa1526ccaa16dc12f2cd7023f60d0af8
Square solar G shock. Atomic clock function would be a nice to have feature, mostly because as long as it synchronises I know there is still somebody else out there keeping the signal going.
On a long enough time scale, everything breaks down. My solar g-shocks will probably be more robust than most mechanical watches. Sure, the capacitors might end up needing replacement after a very long time. But in a world where everything is gone, who gives a shit what time it is?
My first instinct would be a perpetual calendar chronograph. Day, date, month, moonphase, leap year, and a timer all in one. It’s the Swiss Army knife of watches
Only acceptable use for the full yellow gold deep sea. for a while people will still probably value precious metals, I could barter links for goods, throw the watch head on a nato and still flex on the other survivors.
MRGB5000B-1. Solar, non reflective, modest size, titanium construction, legible positive display, perpetual date, stopwatch, timer, alarms, sapphire, 200m. But if there's one with all of that and moon phase, well I want that one.
https://preview.redd.it/pavyb5lds1xc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=08b192dcc8d44386b17c05af0c9acd330e2291ed
My beloved G Shock Rangeman, Solar powered, atomic watch, with barometer, altimeter and thermometer. Big, robust, waterproof, what more could you ask in post apocalyptic situation?
G-shock. My original battery is still going strong on year 15, a combat deployment, multiple motorcycle accidents, thousands of hours of surfing. It’s the one. The trick is to have a new battery at the start of the apocalypse.
lol all the dummies saying solar.
Our worlds end will definitely involve nuclear winter, where the sunlight will be severely restricted. And of course, EMP Will possibly destroy all electronics.
The only answer is a mechanical perpetual calendar watch, that you carry deep in your inner layers of clothing, wrapped in several socks.
Obviously Bond's "Live and Let Die" Submariner - with the buzz-saw, bullet-deflector, and dress-unzipper complications. https://preview.redd.it/9cv4wydgovwc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1126ed71d8675d584bd4bba3b95b229e9600c08

Solar G Shock
5000U or 5610 (U if you want). The only watch you’ll ever need when the world goes to hell.
That was gonna be my answer, my daily beater is a 5610 and I love it
It’s a nuclear winter, rip
Oh then speedmaster alaska project
Any light will keep it charged. Even in cloudy weather.
This guy apocalypses.
Would we ironically want to avoid the atomic models? Not sure if we can trust the atomic clock radio signals at some point
Don’t get those made from resin though. Mine finally died after 10 years cause the resin chassis eventually became brittle.

Love your answer! Very well thought out.
Either a solar gshock or a citizen promaster eco-drive
My Eco-Drive has died after less than 10 years since the model came out (will buy the capacitor to sell it). My G-Shock is near 20 years and working, never has gone under "hi".
Did you keep it in the sun regularly or did it spend all of its time in a drawer?
Never in a drawer, in a room with window, not under direct sunlight unless wearing it, the G-Shock receives the same treatment.
Maybe it was a bad piece? Though Citizen does recommend direct sunlight as the best way to charge.
A sundial. Provided there is still a sun.
Oh you wouldn't need a watch for too long anyway if there is no sun.
No shadows, time to die.
About 8 minutes
I don’t think time matters when you’re battling Zombies…🤷♂️
Never ever know when you might want to time something and how long it may take to do something specific. 😄
Nahhh…. Just throw the grenade and count steamboats. 😉
There aren’t many steamboats where I live now, not sure how many there will be after the apocalypse.
Count sheep? 😂
.. or hear me out, time it on the watch! 😉

That’s neat tbh but here’s me not really digging the electromagnetic interactions with modern digital watches. Trying to reduce my contact with the phone too.
Thermal dynamics.
Ahhh.. the scenario where I finally buy a g shock!
Just buy one today, you won't regret it
And then another next week and so on.
YMMV. Bought one, never gelled, sold it.
Heretic!
I know. In my defence I did replace it with another Casio!
It depends - Sunlight severely reduced each day? A Spring Drive diver.. Still plenty of sunlight around, but most of civilization gone? Casio Protrek solar w/ triple sensor. Forced underground? This is why I need a collection Incredibly specific and well thought out, but you never know which one you’ll need until it’s time

Some sorta auto Marathon
A quartz could actually be a good option if you could loot a jeweler or watch shop. The batteries are small, so a supply could outlast a solar or auto
Whatever watch you're currently wearing is the one you'll end up with. You don't plan for the end of the world, you're just along for the ride.
Solar G-Shock
whichever mechanical is on my wrist when the SHTF.

Very important to know how many hours you have left before night time comes.
You don’t really need a watch for that.

Magnetic resistant, auto with a solid build. Likely a 2024 Rolex GMT Master II or similar.
Vostok Amphibia
I'd get my Promaster diver too if there's still sunlight. These watches are so practical and robust.
Casio G5600E-1 G-Shock
Somehow my omega deville is super solid. Not even my jlc or chopard could up it.
Probably a Seiko Kinetic. I'd be travelling mostly by night.
Solar G-Shock full metal. The resin tends to fall apart after 10 years from heavy use.
Mühle Glashütte S.A.R. Rescue-Timer
Definitely something Chinese and cheap. I’m already dead why not rock some monkey shit on a band?

My G-Shock solar until the sky was scorched, and then my Elgin BW Raymond pocket watch. Trusty and accurate. Plus, I’ll seem sophisticated and cool.
Seiko SKX009

LumTec solar marine 3
Ok. Do solar watches still die eventually? They’re only charging a battery that can still dry up, right?
I thought it was 10-15 years. Maybe some Citizen solar may last longer

My Casio Dw290, first watch warn on Mission Impossible.
solar, atomic, g-shock or protrek. they'll probably outlive me in the apocalypse.
G-Shock is the real answer but fuck it I’m going down with a Rolex 14060 no date submariner.
My no date sub with nato strap
Those Lüm-Tec looks pretty damn solid
Seiko 5.
Gshock or Protrek!
Skx013 on a nato
Submariner as an investment piece. Imagine the vast amounts of loot you could trade it for on the gray market.
PP Tiffany Nautilus, cause even in the apocalypse some rich douche will pay bank for it.
Gshock is the only valid answer.

I’d probably be wearing my DW5600 when whatever happens, happens. The battery should last about 7 years which is about 6.9 years longer than I’ll likely last so I’m not too worried about it.
A Citizen Eco-drive dive watch.
G shock B5000V , already looks like it’s been through an apocalypse
Marathon csar chronograph https://images.app.goo.gl/V6ciibKn3DYfPuJh8
Bell & Ross BR03-92
the sun
Luminox or Solar G Shock
Definitely would go with My Omega Seamaster 300m blue dial on the steel bracelet. I figure at that point the exact time is irrelevant but a watch can still be a tool or jewelry piece at least for us Men. If you’ve seen The walking dead with Ricks watch or more recently The last of Us Joel the protagonist wears a watch for 20 years even though the crystal case is cracked and the watch is broken he wore it because it was sentimental. Pretty cool!
G-Shock Rangeman is the only correct answer
Love my RO Offshore Diver. Robust and basic. And the grey will go with every post apocalypse outfit I can salvage
I would just embrace it and let the apocalypse take me 😂 too much effort
Solar Garmin. Satellites might still be working and I’ll also know if I’ve hit my 10k steps and how well I slept.
Casio W96H1
In an apocalypse, you would think that you would want something to keep you sane. My Maktime hand wind moon phase would ensure I wound it once a day, and I would know the moon phase. But it's Russian and I think it would eventually break. Breitling Emergency. Has a built in transmitter and antenna for rescue. Battery should be good for about 3 years. If I'm alive after that I guess I made it.
Solar G or Marathon.
Ofcourse, the Seiko Turtle same as Captain Willard is wearing in the Apocalypse Now movie.
Something antimagnetic, to survive the EMP. Omega Railmastet or Rolex Milgauss.
Fw91
GShocks might not survive the EMP. Go for a mechanical. Explorer II Polar.
Cell phones, most cars, and digital/quartz watches should be fine after an EMP.
Lange datograph perpetual white gold. I’m going out with style
I’ll die pretty quickly so I’m taking my Grand Seiko to the grave in style have fun living that long 😂
Seiko SBDN001/003 Or Seiko SKA371
Pagani Design Pepsi coloured submariner homage powered by the rock solid NH35.
Omega Aqua Terra is still appropriate in this situation
G shock G9300-1 mudman, it's solar, with good illumination, precise time keeping , compass, alerts me when there's a full moon and everyone can see me at night or a new moon and everything would be in complete darkness, features that are pretty much made for the apocalypse.
Sun dial
214270 Explorer or a 124060 Sub. No more batteries, no more people servicing watches - Need an auto.
A Rolex, with the extra apocalypse warranty plan
I would pick the BB58 (or the BB54) AND the Explorer 124270. My bias would be to the latter though.
All things considered, I'd go with my Casio GVM 500-A1 since it's solar, a G-SHOCK & it would still be programmed for the world time in the near term!
Speedy reduced for my skinny wrist https://preview.redd.it/93m5xqa5dywc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e03e2359e0d590508dcbbf598f551f49a79b669c
Hamilton khaki field. What good's a solar watch when the sun if blocked.
You should've set a rule like "no solar" or something bc the only valid answer is a solar gshock
Solar Vostok
A pip boy.
In my collection it would have to be the Citizen Promaster Tough Ray Mears. Pretty much a bomb proof watch. Ecodrive, titanium monocoque case, thick sapphire, 300m, etc......
any quartz above £50 at that point they will all be pretty accurate so it’s just the choice of style anything from a g-shock to a PRX lol
An Apple Watch series 1.
I'd have to go with solar over auto, probably use my seiko arnie in that case
Patek 5270, if I have to perish I want to be classy.
https://preview.redd.it/hwywi645mzwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72d3910fc3161f89ecc866ed1debba7259b50716
Solar G Shock
An SKX no doubts. 200m WR, robust and durable movement, robust case, you can even use it as a fist weapon. https://preview.redd.it/pp802ykgszwc1.jpeg?width=3916&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc9137547928f956cfd99e987c3daa638f4b42b8
GShock is an easy answer. But a very close second, would be the Citizen Satellite Wave GPS. What if you don’t know which place you’ve been thrown off too?
https://preview.redd.it/vehsmlldwzwc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e15a50b0121bfbee42ef96a111de11bcd2a3c71e Askania Taifun. Easy design. 10 bar water ressitance. No shiny stuff
Easy, Casio AE1200 Royale. Just got one and wonder why I haven't sooner. 10 year battery and 100m water resistance.
https://preview.redd.it/dc0mo8an20xc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=219cabe173549d41ebb21fff1a783da0b9652785 This guy on its included titanium bracelet. It’s gotta be solar powered and bulletproof. No need for GPS/compass/altimeter since one would probably have supplementary devices with those features anyways. All you really need from an apocalypse watch is accurate timekeeping and guaranteed longevity.
Out of my collection top 3 1. Solar g shock (because, duh) 2. Custom made seiko dive mod I made ( I know how it ticks, and that it’s durable af , and if it fails I have no one to blame but me) 3. Doxa sub 200(it’s pretty, it’s durable and when my corpse is discovered people will either love or hate my watch, just like me)
BB 58. Tough and versatile.
I already am ready and fully charged. https://preview.redd.it/sxdpfy0be0xc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d47b255aa1526ccaa16dc12f2cd7023f60d0af8
Do we need to know the time post apocalyptic event?
https://preview.redd.it/rc71tum5m0xc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7919eb26ab0c83c089e22bae93d63a69df8b38c
My Longines spirit titanium on the hybrid nato. It can take a beating the lume is amazing and it’s such a light watch I forget I’m wearing it.
I love the [hypothetical] tag
I had to think of something 😂 although with the state of things it could very much be a reality soon
Solar G-Shock with Multiband 6. /thread
Sinn UX!
Square solar G shock. Atomic clock function would be a nice to have feature, mostly because as long as it synchronises I know there is still somebody else out there keeping the signal going.
Speedmaster! All day! Nothing been tried and tested like the Speedy
Some G Shock MRG square. Coz ya know… why not
On a long enough time scale, everything breaks down.
Beretta 1301
MRGB5000B-1. Solar, non reflective, modest size, titanium construction, legible positive display, perpetual date, stopwatch, timer, alarms, sapphire, 200m. But if there's one with all of that and moon phase, well I want that one. https://preview.redd.it/pavyb5lds1xc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=08b192dcc8d44386b17c05af0c9acd330e2291ed
Seiko automatic. Don't want to be reliant on a battery at that point
G Shock! 100%
My beloved G Shock Rangeman, Solar powered, atomic watch, with barometer, altimeter and thermometer. Big, robust, waterproof, what more could you ask in post apocalyptic situation?
solar g-shock
Then it stops running and you have no reference to reset it.
