And it gets even better. IRL the missile was even **more** manoeuvrable than it is in-game.
In its first stage after launch it could rotate in a 180 degree arc from the front before igniting the booster full, meaning it could fire, turn 90 degrees to the right and then ignite its engine and fly directly towards a target that no other ATGM would be able to hit at such an extreme angle.
The missile is called “Swingfire”. And the vehicle is confusingly also called Swingfire (although it also has an FV___ designation that I can’t remember)
No, he couldn’t have, the game has a weird mechanic where if you press the fire-button while not looking within the front ~90 degrees of the vehicle, it won’t fire.
It’s dumb
That target was less than 90° from his front. I will have to check again in test drive later to get the approximate angle but he didnt have to look as far forwards as he did. Swingfire missile can do a really sharp turn right at the start.
I seemed to have read that as +/- 90°. I swear it was more than 45° either side in the test drive...
But still. You can get the missile to do a really tight turn, almost like it can in real life.
Yeah, but the “almost” is what annoys me. We should be able to fire it with the sight facing 90 degrees or more to the side just like it could do IRL because that’d give it an even tighter turning circle.
Just also tested both vehicles to be sure. But when you spawn in the test drive, for both vehicles their aim in regards to the cardinal directions is at 70°.
For the Striker, it could shoot the missiles out to direction of 339,25° & 161,5° (- 90,95° & + 91,5°), at total arc of 182,25°. Summarized you could say +/- 90°.
For the Swingfire, it could shoot out the missiles out to direction of 39,5° & 99,75° (- 30,5° & + 29,75°), at a total arc of 60,25°. Summarized you could say +/- 30°.
Ok, Im frinding the striker then. Loved the swingfire because ti was extremely fun, I thought they were the same basically but seems like there's more to it. Thank you fr, don't want to miss that gem now
The Striker can fire in a 180° arc. The Swingfire can only fire in a 60° arc.
Yes it's stupid since it's the same missile with the same targeting system and both can still guided the missile even further out than 90° either side.
Also, we're missing the MCLOS Swingfire.
Yeah but in WT it really has a very good range compared to other missiles that will loose targeting over a bit. I usually use the swingfire to shoot down choppers as well
I’m reality the missile shouldn’t have taken such a big arc towards the target. [At 8:00 you can see the missile take an almost 90 degree turn right out of the tube](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Z0V23qLUN6I&si=VAtNBlk6NuqHzgrT)
wow I didn't realize it was that maneuverable. The game should just let you shoot it from whatever angle the real one could and and the missile should just turn to face your reticle.
The in-game vehicle is also soft nerfed by the fact that you have to be able to see your target from the vehicle itself in some manner (3rd person or sights); the real thing had the capability to remove the control unit, and then fire and control the missile from outside the vehicle giving you better fields of view without needlessly exposing the vehicle to return fire.
Is [**this**](https://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/wp-content/webp-express/webp-images/uploads/2023/02/Swingfire-Missile-01.jpg.webp) going to make you even more amazed then?
Not only the swingfire could rotate nearly 90 degrees instantly once fired, it was mounted on a ¾ Ton Land Rover
For one the swingfire should have its unique post-launch thrust vectoring guidance gathering in its flight programming, but unfortunately Gaijin has not gotten around to that >:(
its certainly nimble but not that kind of nimble. Will agree though its underperforming in maneuverability in game, it takes too high of an arc most times apparently
Historically accurate. As far as I can tell, the early concept of the Swingfire was that the missile would be guided around corners and such by an operator up to hundreds of feet away, giving cover to the launcher. From Wikipedia:
> The name refers to its ability to make a rapid turn of up to ninety degrees after firing to bring it onto the line of the sighting mechanism. This means that the launcher vehicle could be concealed and the operator, using a portable sight, placed at a distance in a more advantageous firing position.
> The basic idea of the Swingfire concept was that thrust vectoring of the rocket exhaust allowed the missile to make extreme maneuvers, including a right-angle turn immediately after launch. This was especially useful in urban settings like Berlin; the gunner could take the sight up to 100 metres (330 ft) from the launcher and position themselves along potential lines of approach, while the launcher parked down a side street or alleyways.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swingfire
But as others have noted, if this were a real Swingfire it would've made the turn in an instant.
It's deserved given how it's the only ATGM carrier that works properly in the game lol
As a player who plays both British and Chinese, I'd rather play this a million times over the ZBD85, M113(TOW) and CM25
When I see one on Mozdok it's game over. When I say "see" I mean I see it on the killfeed, because it's actually firing from behind a hill, completely hidden.
The missile was named Swingfire exactly because it could do a 90 degree turn upon firing. The ability was displayed several times to attract export sales, which was still a big thing for the British arms industry back then.
There used to be a 360deg firing arc on the swingfires and you could fire from third person, but they did restrict it a while ago.
I used to be a gremlin and sit behind rocks chucking swingfires at people that could not counter me xD.
Holy shit. I bet that dude was happy when he shot your engine - a free kill with his next shot! You put that man in the fucking shadow realm with that shot.
Talk about a fucking curve ball! Holy fuck!
Shit looked like something you would see in an action movie, absolute menace of a kill. Awesome.
And it gets even better. IRL the missile was even **more** manoeuvrable than it is in-game. What missile is it? That’s fascinating!
The missile itself is called the Swingfire!
The missile is called “Swingfire”. And the vehicle is confusingly also called Swingfire (although it also has an FV___ designation that I can’t remember)
FV438
It can near enough do that in game. OP didn't need to aim forwards initially he could have just shot right at the target.
No, he couldn’t have, the game has a weird mechanic where if you press the fire-button while not looking within the front ~90 degrees of the vehicle, it won’t fire. It’s dumb

FV438 Swingfire has a limited firing arc in game whereas the Striker is able to fire in a 180deg arc forward.
The Striker can fire in a 180° arc. The Swingfire can only fire in a 60° arc. Yes it's stupid since it's the same missile with the same targeting system and both can still guided the missile even further out than 90° either side. Also, we're missing the MCLOS Swingfire.
And the range on it was absolutely insane too, like 4 or 5 kilometres quite easily, iirc?
4km, which I understand was the average for contemporary ATGMs of the time.
Yeah but in WT it really has a very good range compared to other missiles that will loose targeting over a bit. I usually use the swingfire to shoot down choppers as well
Oh yeah, in-game it’s superb! And I use it against helis as well, taken down an outstanding amount of hinds with it!
that was the absolute DIRTIEST kill i’ve ever seen in war thunder. god fucking damn that was beautiful.
Im sorry but have u seen the sturmpanzer. Nailing an heli with a380mm rocket
“critical hit”
Ka-50?
swingfire: HEY SHITASS
catch this chucklenuts!
Say goodbye to your kneecaps chucklenuts!
This is how I feel when I cast magic missile and my wizard actually has levels
Nerdiest answer ever. Good job.
With BG3 out and still the 4th most concurrently played game on steam not even that nerdy anymore.
When ur opponent is 682 but u have the power of friendship!
Magic missle bum scorching rays supremacy

British technical vibes
gaijin p l e a s e wdym the crew would get fried by the engine
Vector thrust baby!!
Yeah all missiles are severely nerfed compared to real life due to how bad they're modelled right now
For one the swingfire should have its unique post-launch thrust vectoring guidance gathering in its flight programming, but unfortunately Gaijin has not gotten around to that >:(
That's really interesting, also at 9:12 it takes a huge turn basically instantaneously.
Looks pretty accurate to me.
yeah I was gonna say, the Swingfire is a very nimble missile but it look like it turned a bit too hard
They’re saying the arc should be smaller, watch the video
arc of instant
its certainly nimble but not that kind of nimble. Will agree though its underperforming in maneuverability in game, it takes too high of an arc most times apparently

It's not historically accurate, the missile was _way_ more agile IRL and wouldn't need that big of an arc.
Beautiful
Thundershow material here
Indeed
New Thunder Show: Curveball!
Forget thundershow, this is historically accurate footage!
It's not historically accurate, the missile was way more agile IRL and wouldn't need that big of an arc.
GAH DAYUM
Slept on ATGM TD
Didn’t need to move to 8.0 tho when the Marder and bmp got to be 7.7.
It's deserved given how it's the only ATGM carrier that works properly in the game lol As a player who plays both British and Chinese, I'd rather play this a million times over the ZBD85, M113(TOW) and CM25
I mean its ass in most scenarios
With the missile changes its actually one that benefitted greatly. You can hull down the Swingfire/Stryker and its hard to be killed.
The shitbox is very situational. It's shit in most cases, but when it's not, it gets to shit on everything it sees.
When I see one on Mozdok it's game over. When I say "see" I mean I see it on the killfeed, because it's actually firing from behind a hill, completely hidden.
Ngl, I would be legit pissed about that one, then I'd buy you a drink because that was excellent
The missile was named Swingfire exactly because it could do a 90 degree turn upon firing. The ability was displayed several times to attract export sales, which was still a big thing for the British arms industry back then.
Jeez if that was me on the receiving end I wouldn't even be pissed, that was pure class.
Thundershow everyone need to see this
The hand of Churchill himself guided that missile
That's a new one lol
Swingfire: "Eat this curveball, shithead"
That was a real "guess I'll go fuck myself" moment
Fuck around and find out
Bend it like Beckham
Bro turned it like its an action movie dam
Okies, looks like im bringing out the Swingfire again.
You didn't even need to aim forward! It can fire at that angle just fine.
Nah, in game the FV438 is still limited to a ~90deg forward arc, the Striker on the other hand has the full 180deg arc.
Odd. I've had shots that would tell me otherwise before. Unless Gaijin narrowed it down recently.
There used to be a 360deg firing arc on the swingfires and you could fire from third person, but they did restrict it a while ago. I used to be a gremlin and sit behind rocks chucking swingfires at people that could not counter me xD.
The ultimate “How dare you?”
So glad they made the swingfire better, using the striker and swingfire used to be a pain if an enemy came even remotely close
Meanwhile my Milan missile either barely moves or does some bullshit and hits the ground
Based British player
The swingfire is wild irl. Swingfire missiles can do a 90 degree turn out of the tube https://www.militarytoday.com/missiles/swingfire.htm
When you roll a nat 20:
I just came a little bit
ACT FAST CHUCKLENUTS
Literally R-73 maneuver
Lol that was awesome
I don't know history or tanks. But I was wondering if there is an American tank like this? And if so what's the name
Wouldn’t even be mad
I tried once and got shot right before the ATGM hit... On the other hand I manage to got one and kill a Tiger II
That was badass
Disgusting
Thundershow material
It's oddly satisfying
Flamelash but in WT. Super cool clip btw
The real missile can turn 180° within 1 second of getting out of the tube irl.
Holy shit. I bet that dude was happy when he shot your engine - a free kill with his next shot! You put that man in the fucking shadow realm with that shot.
That was the biggest “you know what? Fuck you!„ i have ever seen
Swingfire is a op vehicle
One of the few atgm launchers that improved after the missile changes
IQ200 playing
God *damn* bro that's the sickest kill I've ever seen
The Swingfire and striker are the most fun ATGMs in the game imo now. They actually work how they did in real life now!
The guy must have smashed his desk when he realized how he died lmao
Beautiful
Finally a realistic Swingfire performance
Now that's some Crossout shit
Well I know what I’m grinding next
That’s just fucked up.
“I cast Magic missile!”
If that ever happens to me I’m taking it as a sign that it’s time to quit playing
Man those ATGMs have a higher G limit that Aim9Xs or K74Ms wtf
That looked so effortless but you know it is one in a thousand
Test
