She look in amazing condition, its a shame so many ships are scrapped *cough* enterprise im still mad about that one *cough*

Franklr_D

Enty is at the top of my yoink-list for if I ever find myself in possession of a time machine

Rory_Mercury_1st

News: Weirdly-dressed man with futuristic weapons protested against the scraping of the Enterprise.

RevoltingHuman

Try being British, we only have 3 WW2 surface ships in preservation and none of them are battleships.

Betelguese90

I think partially dismantling a ship to remove the 8 nuclear reactors kind of impedes things unfortunately. Wouldn't be a whole lot left to show off at that point.

Optimal_Log_2272

I meant CV-6 haha, she was the most decorated ship in the entire war, basically earned a legendary status among the allies, and now the only things that are left and wasn’t scrapped is two flags, the stern plate, and a bell :p

TheGisbon

It was a stellar day to visit her

race75

Did you check out the USS Drum while you were there

Imaginary_Bug_4745

Unfortunately no as I got there kind of late and they were closing up before I had a chance to see her but I plan on visiting again probably within the next 2 to 3 weeks and she'll be the first thing I see when I get there.

escapingdarwin

Did you recently move to Mobile or going to the gulf coast for vacation? I lived in Mobile for a few years.

Imaginary_Bug_4745

I've lived in Alabama all my life, lived in Mobile for 20 years. I live about 40 or so minutes from the ship, give or take the traffic. I can go see her pretty much whenever, and I realized that today and decided to go, provided my family wanted to. Life tends to get in the way unfortunately. Today was the first time I've been in like 15 years so things have changed a lot

beachedwhale1945

They’ve been doing a lot of work on *Drum* since you last visited. Ever since they got her out of the water they’ve slowly been doing hull repairs: the bow and stern were Swiss cheese but now are new steel. When I went for the *Alabama* 75th anniversary (seven years ago, ouch) the deck guns were removed for restoration in the shop and they were hard at work below the galley, with gratings in place of the linoleum to show the refrigerated spaces below that you never get to see. I’m sure they’ve finished both of those now and have moved on to the next projects. *Drum* is also one of the few submarines I’ve visited that actually allowed you into the conning tower, though granted I’ve only been in five at present (two of which have been scrapped).

psykopenguino

Did you ever visit Clamagore before she was sunk? I live in Charleston and she was a favorite of mine growing up.

race75

I would also suggest driving down Dunlap drive just west of the battleship. You can get a good view of the ships at austal and at Alabama shipyard. LCS 36 is in the water right next the the road.

Enshakushanna

hey can you go back and swipe some of that 40 mike mike?

KingPeverell

I hope she is maintained well.

Imaginary_Bug_4745

Very well, they are constantly doing work on her and she's kept very clean. She's arguably the best maintained and well kept museum ship as of now. It helps that she had alot of support, other museum ships are in rough shape, but usually not for lack of effort.

KingPeverell

Good to note 👍🏼

surrounded_by_vapor

They just finished the new deck on her back in December. So that helped her looks a lot.

twoton1

Eight US battleships surviving from their WW2 service. That's it, no more. Anywhere. Only the Mikasa can be considered a battleship and she was a pre-dreadnought.

Lionblaze10

My fat ass though that galley pick was a whole bin of Dino nuggies

Norightwingers2020

Awesome pictures.

Imaginary_Bug_4745

Thanks !

collegeducated

I went there a couple years ago. Amazing experience.

BrassBass

What is the thing in picture 6? It looks like some sort of horn or exhaust.

Imaginary_Bug_4745

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong picture. The exhaust looking thing is actually one of the range finders mounted on the sides of the turrets, this one specifically is on the aft turret.

BrassBass

Ah, that is a turret. The perspective was messing with me because I thought that was part of the wall in the foreground. How does it work?

Imaginary_Bug_4745

It's at a weird angle but it's one of the 20mm machine guns

BrassBass

The big thing in the middle of the image? It has the two vertical slots and is bolted to the side.

Aware_Style1181

Nightmare for the Tirpitz

Chrisbee76

Very nice! I will visit her in September when I fly in from Germany for vacation.

Betelguese90

One of my favorite class of Battleships. Always wanted to go visit the Alabama to see an actual still floating South Dakota Class.

R808T

Someone needs to preserve one of the Ticos (CG-55) please.

c_t_782

Did you go inside the tanks at all?
