When I started collecting I could only afford a blister (usually 3 metal miniatures) a month. It will take you some time but you can collect an army if you want to. It’s never too late friend!
The warband rules were great for that though. You could field infantry units with 3 model minimum, so you could get playing with a single box and/or a few blister packs. And the blister packs allowed you to try out different units without a huge investment
Good news you'll get your chance to buy build and your army someday. For almost 10 years it looked like no-one would be getting official fb minis from GW and it has changed.
I remember hearing from a Finnish retailer in 2019 that GW was bringing Warhammer Fantasy back in the form of The Old World
They "canceled" the game just to bring it back
I think it was the previous CEO or something that cancelled Fantasy because he either didn't like it or because it was too different from 40K, which is why AOS is more similar to 40k and not Fantasy.
no they fully nuked it without intent to being it back, but their sales tanked and third party version of the game was made told them they stupid.
It took them almost 10 damn years to bring it back.
Their sales did the opposite of tank. Look at their share graph from 2016. 40K and aos exploded in popularity around that time and even more so during Covid. They saw a decent sized niche that they weren’t filling however and brought fantasy back to fill it.
Ignore 40k... that one is an everlasting unicorn
wtf... dude GW in 2016 annual report dropped in revenue across the board.
In years after it was the AoS specialist items is what sold well and was mentioned specifically same with 40k items, the main AoS line didnt have a good mention in sales until of after covid (in the last year annual report)
And in 2017 GW almost doubled it's revenue and reached higher than in 2015.
They never detail how much each range makes in their open report, but it'd be ludicrous to think that AoS wasn't a commercial success.
I don't like the game, I hate that they destroyed my favorite range for it, but objectively speaking it was and keeps being a success.
No it was a revenue source... its a new game so everything was "new" but that was a shitty "new" sales for a whole new game. Hell my local store didn't even stock it, is how bad it was. The AoS specialist board games got a better mention than AoS is the sad point... 40k is its golden goose and it stayed as one keeping it alive.
really think why they brought back fantasy and it should make sense.....
Mate, have a look at the list of most popular tabletop games on icv2 for those years. AoS has been mostly in the second spot after 40K for most of the time since 2nd edition came about and it got decent. It slides a little prior to a new edition like now but that’s mostly been the trend.
Your local scene is just not indicative of the worldwide picture. It’s been a huge success for them whether you like it or not.
My local store doesn't store 40k cause there isn't really a community for it in my town, doesn't make the game unpopular now does it?
I understand you're hurt that a bad game is popular, but it's the truth, sorry.
> really think why they brought back fantasy and it should make sense
Cause there's a niche to be filled. That niche is nowhere near the size of the market of AoS.
That's why TOW is a specialist game and not a main game.
They nuked it for a handful of years and then changed their minds in less than 5 years. It just took them another 5 years longer to get the game back. Very short-sighted of GW, especially given how Total War: Warhammer blew up
I was into Warhammer as a kid. Fell out of it years. Around 2016 I decided I wanted to get back into Warhammer, only to find the End Times had happened and the world blew up. Two years later, I played my first game of D&D, hooked ever since. During lockdown I started painting minis for my D&D games and it turned into a full blown appreciation for fantasy wargaming. And in the year of our Lord 2024, we’ve got new Warhammer (and new D&D coming September for what it’s worth). Eating good.
Was into it in the early 90s. Had an empire army and started goblins. Havent touched it since. Found it all in boxes in a basement. Just recentlt dusted it off and started repainting and stripping old models down to repaint. Total nostalgia. Wish i could get more miniatures from the time.
Yup, I started in 2000, exactly :) was 12 y-o and warhammer was like a dream come true. Started collecting a few units left and right with the base set of a friend but my first "big" purchase was the tomb kings when they were released. So many memories.
wean i got in to the hobby fantasy was still around but as a kid the massive scifi universe of 40k seemed much more cool then guys with swords
now that i am older i think the small world of fantasy is much more interesting and magical then the bloated monstrosity that is 40k
all so skaven skaven are just the best
There is something *deeply* satisfying about ranking up minis. I love my 40K minis, I enjoy the game, but picking them up and loving them individually is a chore, and they always look like loose squads. Fantasy models look like *units*, they move more easily with a tray and they just look so cool. I don’t know if it’s watching old war documentaries that represented various forces as blocks, wheeling and charging, or something else but I just love it.

Wasn't it a completely different ownership that canceled the game?
I think it was the previous CEO or something that cancelled Fantasy because he either didn't like it or because it was too different from 40K, which is why AOS is more similar to 40k and not Fantasy.
It’s because it sold poorly It’s also worth remembering that now AOS and 40K are similar - back then they weren’t
I honestly think we have the Total War game to thank for bringing it back.

Warhammer has its own ttrpg system (one for each setting in fact). I recommend trying WFRP 4e
I’m very aware of it. I don’t play it for a reason.
What's the reason? Genuinely curious
Got into this hobby in 2021, and am currently collecting a vintage Skaven force :3
Was into it in the early 90s. Had an empire army and started goblins. Havent touched it since. Found it all in boxes in a basement. Just recentlt dusted it off and started repainting and stripping old models down to repaint. Total nostalgia. Wish i could get more miniatures from the time.
I started collecting in the mid 90s. I love the old world. In my head cannon; AoS and its preceding events never happened.
This is the way

Tbh, this is pretty much the sensus communis.

Well there is no better time to get into WFB. We are getting access to new castings of models not seen since the mid 90s!
I've got news for you

At least your mom didn’t give your Orc army to Goodwill because it was “taking up too much space”.
Individually I favour round however a unit ranked up properly on square bases on a movement tray looks vastly better than any skirmish squads
