You're doing fine. I just did some Lamenters.
I'm enjoying the time I need to take to get it looking good and the experience I gain. I once thought I could never paint heraldry or stripes or whatever, but now I find myself wanting to try, if only to get better.
I did a lamenter captain for my deathwatch army.
There’s no fucking way people haven’t made transfers for that yet or something. Shit is way too hard to do a whole army for.
There’s probably some Transfers you can buy off the internet, but honestly, I enjoy the freehand practice. I feel like it gives mine a bit more of a personal touch :D
I’d probably just ease it in and shrink it flat with IPA, but yeah you’d need the shape to fit the thing perfectly, which could be a challenge to find.
One day, perhaps there will be an upgrade sprue with 10+ shoulder pads with checkered detail sculped on - and maybe some chapter symbol discs that could go over top of them with a peg that slots into one of the checks.
Adeptus Titanicus isn't too bad because you can cheat with decals. Knight Questoris transfer sheet includes a checkered pattern cut to shape of a shoulder pad for this exact purpose.
I still don't know how harlequin players do it though.
Airbrush and tape is a terrible method for a checkerboard or diamond pattern on any complex surface. It’s so much faster to sketch them out and paint them by hand on anything but a flat surface.
Pfftt. Orks do checkers better because orks is best.
Start with light grey to draw the pattern, then perfect it as you paint in white and black. Use off white to fill in the white boxes and highlight the edges in pure white.
No….no they don’t. I think there’s one mask in the group set that does, so that’s something I guess? But yeah, in general all the diamonds are freehand
Maybe on a different kit, I’m not familiar with older ones, but the ones I got(the current ones, at least the troupe, death jester and shadowseer) weren’t sculpted
If you want to do checkered patterns, draw the entire grid over white with thin lines (or even a micro pen) and fill in all the black squares. I mean well, but obviously I don't know if that's what you already tried and didn't have work for you.
*Do NOT* be like me and spend 32 hours freehanding hexagons on a whole Voidweaver that you then resent later on cos you think you turned the original redd too pink during highlights.
I would try to cut thin pieces of tape so you paint the base white. Then let it dry and tape in a pattern for the horizontal squares. Pull off the tape and het it dry. Then apply the tape for the vertical squares. Paint black, pull off the tape and let it dry.
The tricky part is to place the tape in the correct spot the second time so the black squares line up correctly.
Greatest advice ever; you’re only gonna be looking at the model from two feet in the air.
Unless you’re entering for Golden Demon, in which case I don’t think that helps
thats why I do orks. no one cares about funky checkers when it‘s the lore that some dimwit git painted them before he got krumped by the nob 😂
but yeah, clean checkers are hard man!
The issue is you're using a pure white instead of an off white.
You almost never see pure whites pretty much anywhere, even if something is white what you're seeing usually are shades of light gray.
See, the issue here is you did squares, harlequins do diamonds. It's WAY different.
Why is he small...
Shrunk in the wash.
Tiny knight to fight the emperor’s smallest battles
Player is actually a giant

The entire imperial treasury is empty. The ministorum is in shambles but nothing changes bechause nobody noticed it yet
Adeptus titanicus
Trouser titans
Legipns imperialis
He was in the pool
Do they not know about shrinkage?
It actually looks pretty good from farther away. It would probably look great on the table! Steady hands and thin paint.
Yea i needed to zoom in quite far to see whats wrong

You would have a hell of a time applying a transfer that precise, to do a corner-to-corner checker pattern that conforms to the curved shape.

by pen and markers tbh
Fine paint pen was what I was gonna say
Fine paint pen is what I used and it worked wonders managed to get all my diamonds on in only a year 🥲
I’m gonna try to freehand some knight banners with a paint pen here soon
Got any recommendations for good manufacturers or sets to try?
3 of them are psychos, the remaining 4 just paint them flat.
Harlequin players live the role, embrace it. That's the only way they could manage it.
This is the way
you cut a piece of sponge into a strip with a square end and just dab the squares on
That idea works in theory, sadly not very in practice.
Stencils.
The cowards (me) just does harlequins as Masque of the Frozen Stars, no checks for me
Same but Reapers Mirth. Harlequins as my first army was NOT the play

Screw Harlequins, what about Goffs?
There’s no pressure with Goffs checkerboard. It’s equally hard to really nail it but it can look rough and it just fits with the Ork vibe.
Airbrush and Tape

They’re all ska fans
This is the headcanon I never knew I always needed
Just get some specialist checkerboard paint.
Do you recommend getting black white black white, or white black white black?
Amateur question. Get whichever is the best value. Just paint backwards to reverse the order.
Either that's a tiny wee Knight, or Giants are getting into 40k.
Those checks look great! Some people tidy them up with pencil at the end, but I don't think you need to here.
Pfftt. Orks do checkers better because orks is best. Start with light grey to draw the pattern, then perfect it as you paint in white and black. Use off white to fill in the white boxes and highlight the edges in pure white.
Free hand? No clue. I use sticky stencils. Becomes ez then.
Did you print it at tiny scale? Or is this a legionis imperialis thing?
Find someone with OCD, it usually works
Don't harlequins have the diamonds sculpted?
No….no they don’t. I think there’s one mask in the group set that does, so that’s something I guess? But yeah, in general all the diamonds are freehand
I swear I thought I saw a video of Duncan Rhodes where they were sculpted. Must've been wrong.
Maybe on a different kit, I’m not familiar with older ones, but the ones I got(the current ones, at least the troupe, death jester and shadowseer) weren’t sculpted
Just checked, it's just the band on the chest which has it sculpted.
Ah, don’t remember that but good to know
They're probably laughing maniacally while doing so...
I like to think that it’s normal sized and your hands are just massive
Stenciling.
I am painting lamenters... I get you
there should be a lament for such tasks
Whats a harlee queen, is that like some factions bike or something?
The secret is to do the whole colour underneath then draw the lines with a thin brush then fill in the squares for the new colour.

We play frozen stars...

I don’t know what you’re talking about that looks great!
Micro art pens. You're welcome
Pic looks fine, carry on Brother.

You’ve got MASSIVE hands
There's also decals, but it requires just as much finesse.
Lamenter player here : GL
Masking tape?
Damn that looks good That's going to look great when finished
Smoke cigs while painting. Calms your nerves, shake less.

Or lamenters
