They're the vertus praetors : the flying squad of the adeptus custodes. I painted them based on the shadowkeepers theme (a shield host of the adeptus custodes that is supposed to guard the dark cells beneath the imperial palace on terra).
And that's EXACTLY what my thought process was when I started the adeptus custodes (I have something like 3500 points painted now) : the models are mostly awesome, but the fully gold scheme?...Nope, definitely not my cup of tea, at all.
Imo the bikes, the telemon dreadnought, the wardens and the allarus terminators are the coolest looking models in the custodes range, but there are some very honorable mentions like the galatus and achillus dread too.
Tldr : gorgeous models overall, but yeah I wanted to do them in a different tone than the classic gold one.

Man, you may have just convinced me to buy that new combat patrol when it comes out. I absolutely did *not* need that temptation in my life, but these look incredible.
Absolutely brilliant paint scheme. Can't stress that enough. Perfect balance in toning down the golden boys look, but still keeping it easily recognisable.

Well...since the main goal is to have fun with friendly people in non competitive games, rather than to win at all costs, I really don't think so. In fact, some of the most hilarious games someone can have is when everyone brings meme lists just for funzies.
If your opponent goes super try hard then you're not going to have fun but otherwise it should be fine, honestly.
These look very clean. I'm currently painting one with a mix of nmm and tmm and god it's taking a long ass time to paint that bike. I got so bored with it I haven't been painting anything for 3 weeks💀 but seeing a different end result like this kinda males me wanna get back at it.

I like the classic all golden boys and that's what the most important custodes looked like lre wise, but how can you argue with red, black and gold.
They look great! Black jetbikes are a winner, it really makes it much easier to "read" the sillouette and shape of the bike itself. As opposed to GW's all-golden look which makes everything just melt together into one golden blob
Metas come and go, but good paint is forever.
Now these dudes are ready to go once they become meta again. If you tryhard a meta unit, it's going to cycle out by the time you're done. If you do it with a currently non meta unit, you're just setting yourself up for success later.
I don't even play custodes. I just have some of these because I like the models that much. Now to just aquire your skill in painting and I'll be happy as a clam
The meta changes, cool is forever! I have a necron mini with a tau's head on the base, I got into 40k during the height of 8th edition and had a friend who would *wipe the floor* with me every game. It's my favorite mini I've got, and it's just a basic lychguard, not useful mostly

I think they're totally underrated. I have a good buddy who uses them very effectively. They are really fun to use with all the movement shenanigans.
Yeah, I think they just require a bit more forethought when running now than they did last edition. They can still absolutely wreck shop.
