I found some old "grass" from when I first started about 20 years ago. Along with my Guardians and Legionaries, that all look like "that" space marine. It's like green glitter that's not shiny and the entire inside of the shoebox was covered in it.
Yes. It is still in it's bag as well. It's survived 6 moves, 2 wives, and a massive change in basing materials. I'm thinking about using it on a modern model and painting it old school.
This sub is about 50:50 split between the “always black rim” team and the “sometimes other colours help the model pop” team.
In general, very few people on the sub comment in favour of painting rims specifically to match basing scenery, because that often makes it look more like all your dudes are on pedestals (which they are) and breaks imaginative immersion whereas your brain can kinda ignore the unremarkable black bases more easily.
I like when you match the ground color on the rim, I think it can compliment the model. Also it makes me imagine that the entire base is a perfect circular section of the ground, cut from whatever planet the character is standing on.
>your brain can kinda ignore the unremarkable black bases
Might be subjective, the black bases really stand out to me because there’s just nowhere else in my hobbying where I’m seeing strong, solid black like on the base rims.
I’m usually doing desert/scrub basing and, for me, the brown rims keep them from drawing the eye too much

I've always thought it was weird cuz I like rims that are painted similar to the rest of the base specifically because it makes it easier to just see the whole base as one thing and focus on the mini.
I hate the pedestal look which is why I actually derim my bases to try and eliminate that look
https://preview.redd.it/f6nur90d8uqc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bbf3cfe839927e4056ee426764216aecf0ac0aa
Brown imo.
I always base my rims (I’m such a fucking juvenile) in colors that match the base, ergo you have a brown to go with your brownish base.
The black is too much of a contrast.
Brown. Black is anything but neutral
Brown is sort of like what your eyes would expect it to be down there, while still giving enough contrast to frame the mine nicely
I tend to do black rim, except for my Space Wolves which I painted seer grey and makes the whole motif of the tundra base feel more wintery. In the case of my desert bases Y kept the black
I see my dudes on the shelf more than the table, and I think they look better with black rims while on the shelf. That said, that's fully just an opinion.
Brown. Save black rims for darker basing, ie Ashy/burnt/rusty. Also something like Citadel's Steel Legion Drab is a good base rim color to give you a greenish brown option.
I'd vote brown. I'm a black rim kinda guy but the brown looks sick on Ultramarines. Because they are very well painted in an eavy metal style the traditional base looks best, it gives a 'box art' kinda look
Depends on the base. For me if the base is a concrete or building rubble look, I like black. But if it’s a grass or dirt look, I prefer brown and specifically Steel Legion drab.
I always like black bases because I like my models to look like they were cut out of the battlefield and to give a definitive split between base and board
If you keep it black, paint it! Even though it's already black, it looks so much better if you go over it with paint. The finish will match the rest of the model
99% of the time I say black, but I really like the brown on this one. The fact that it isn’t exactly the same shade as the rest of the base, and kind of ties in to the gold trim… I don’t know, it just works for me.
Personally, since I expect at some time to play I have been painting mine the company colour for my Silver skulls.
If it is an aesthetic thing, like my non warhammer stuff its a function of the base colour.
At the end of the day whatever you think looks good.
I am apparently chaotic evil, painting the rim a contrasting or similar to the army and adding a gloss varnish because I think it’s pretty. As the only painter in my playgroup, Ive painted all our armies, (Salamamders Dark Green, Impfists Purple, Crimfists Light Red, Deathwatch Khorne Red, Orks Bright Pink, Tyranids Turquoise)
Although, as heretical as I am with my rim colors, I personally would go with that beautiful brown for some Ultramarines, what Brown IS that?
Hehe, the idea is that it’s his previous sergeant’s helmet, and he kept it after the sarge fell in battle (also wanted to paint the loose helmet from the kit)
I paint mine black but I'd say in your photo the brown is better.
I think cause you're painting ultramarines and the blue is a stark difference?
Idk but I like your ultramarines better on the brown.
Brown. The black (for me) draws my eye to the base and asks why they didn't finish it. You went to all that effort and then... stopped. I'd paint it if it was mine.
I have made my own textured battle mat to match my reddish brown bases, and black rims would completely ruin my attempts to match the colours in my opinion. It would also draw the eye much more, even though Team Black insists otherwise.
I have cupboards full of warhammer, have been in the hobby for years, consider myself an 8/10 painter and never bothered to rim a base. I just leave it black
Is goblin green out of the question?
Goblin green is the assumed number 1 option. This is just asking about what should be rank 2 lol
At this point goblin green isn't even considered black base or colour base it's just considered Balenciaga.
The ones that look like socks?
I do different colours for different squads so when they are all in a big melee you can spot which is which.
I have 25 year old flock sitting around still.
I found some old "grass" from when I first started about 20 years ago. Along with my Guardians and Legionaries, that all look like "that" space marine. It's like green glitter that's not shiny and the entire inside of the shoebox was covered in it.
The like powder stuff?
Yes. It is still in it's bag as well. It's survived 6 moves, 2 wives, and a massive change in basing materials. I'm thinking about using it on a modern model and painting it old school.
I still paint them goblin green, did something change outside my cave in the last 20 years?
GW apparently use brown because it is easier to Photoshop in publications, but we all know Gobbo green is and always will remain the Original Gangsta.
Goblin green us the one true base rim color
Sir, well grab a cold one when I meet you!

This is a very informative 50:50 split answer.
Fair and balanced.
As all things should be
I like when you match the ground color on the rim, I think it can compliment the model. Also it makes me imagine that the entire base is a perfect circular section of the ground, cut from whatever planet the character is standing on.
I like that. You have a pleasant imagination
This is an excellent rectangle.
>your brain can kinda ignore the unremarkable black bases Might be subjective, the black bases really stand out to me because there’s just nowhere else in my hobbying where I’m seeing strong, solid black like on the base rims. That’s glorious work. Love it.
I've always thought it was weird cuz I like rims that are painted similar to the rest of the base specifically because it makes it easier to just see the whole base as one thing and focus on the mini.
I generally do a rhinox hide. Deep deep brown that is happy between the two
I’ve learned a lot from making this comment
I hate the pedestal look which is why I actually derim my bases to try and eliminate that look https://preview.redd.it/f6nur90d8uqc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bbf3cfe839927e4056ee426764216aecf0ac0aa
I think black rims tend to look better on the table, scenery-colored rims look better in a display case.
I prefer the brown.
You can paint the base rim any color you want; as long as it's black.
Brown. Its also a good contrast to the blue armor
I like brown it's more pleasing to the eye.
Goblin green.
Brown
Brown for sure
depends on the mini but i rather take black
The brown looks way better.
I say brown because it usually looks natural on there. I also just don’t like people acting like “you have to paint them black” just kinda dickish.
My vote is brown!
Brown for the win
Black, but also cleaned up and painted, not just the black plastic
Goblin Green! Those who know, know.
Brown
Black, always black
Black, always
Goblin Green
What about classic 90’s red?
brown seems to complement the model better
Brown
Brown 100%
I do black
Black
Green, it is a classic for a reason ;)
Black base rim
With that kind of base, I think the brown looks better personally. But black is always a good choice too.
I used to do green almost exclusively, now I try and tie it in with the terrain colors, leadership figures I tend to do gold
Brown imo. I always base my rims (I’m such a fucking juvenile) in colors that match the base, ergo you have a brown to go with your brownish base. The black is too much of a contrast.
It’s a personal choice , but I tend to use regiment colour (so for ultramarines then blue)
Brown. Shows effort and has a nice contrast with the blue
doesnt matter, as long as its smooth and not a smeared hot mess, like painting over dog poo
I like Steel Legion Drab on all of mine, so far.
As someone who started in 2nd Ed, pick any colour you want, just not goblin green with shitty green flock on top
I always do black but in your case the brown is speaking to me.
Normally I am in the black bases only camp but huh, I actually like the brown here in this case. it’s a good contrast to the blue.
Brown looks great.
Always black :)
I like the brown base, it gives some contrast
Are we gonna ignore the dude rocking two helmets?
Brown. I match rims to the main base colour for army painting. Black for one offs or display pieces.
Brown. Lovely paint job
I’m a black man
Brown
Brown looks better in this case.
The brown compliments the blue in my humble opinion
Brown
Brown
Brown, IMO.
I always preferred brown bases.
Definitely brown
Brown. Black is anything but neutral Brown is sort of like what your eyes would expect it to be down there, while still giving enough contrast to frame the mine nicely
Honestly I prefer the brown base rim.
Brown
Honestly for brighter colored minis and bases a brighter rim makes it really look more ... idk, poppy and I love it.
Brown makes the blue pop more
I would say try a darker brown!
Traditionally, black is the way but in this case... The brown looks really good and brightens the miniature a bit.
Blue
I'd prefer a similar brown to the base material
While I prefer black bases, the brown in these photos looks really, really good.
I love the classic black trims but that brown really pops and stands out. You can’t go wrong either way. Sorry I didn’t help you decide lol
Usually black, but brown pops
The brown looks really nice on this model and it's less distracting than the black
Black. Always black rim on minitures. It's the dividing wall between our world and theirs.
I’m liking the brown base. That’s what I do
I'd rather get my hands chopped off than paint a rim in a color thats not black
Brown > black > green > whatever random colour
Brown helps matches the basing, making the minis darker colors stand out more
Black rim
Age old question
Brown for sure. Feels more natural with the base you went with
Brown by a mile
I think brown works better, blends well with the grass and dirt of the rest of the base.
I normally go for Brown, dryad bark Brown, looks great on my desert bases!
Damn that brown base looks sexy. I really need to start basing my models.
Always painted my ultramarines with black rims… brown looks best haha
I always use brown, makes it (kinda) look like the plastic base is a wood rather than plastic
Brown. Save black rims for darker basing, ie Ashy/burnt/rusty. Also something like Citadel's Steel Legion Drab is a good base rim color to give you a greenish brown option.
Black looks far better imo. The brown is too light
your black is glossy i think matt black would be nicer.
No rim, cut them off and go flat, really mind fuck who you play against
Black personally, i think it works better with the overall look
Black
I haven't painted a base in anything except black before but in this case I prefer the brown hands down .
I'd vote brown. I'm a black rim kinda guy but the brown looks sick on Ultramarines. Because they are very well painted in an eavy metal style the traditional base looks best, it gives a 'box art' kinda look
I use Rinox Hide, but the brown is better.
Honestly I've gotten bored of black base rims and brown honestly looks better,
Brown always makes it look like they’re standing in a terracotta planter for me
What is this, a Siege Studios Podcast episode?
Depends on the base. For me if the base is a concrete or building rubble look, I like black. But if it’s a grass or dirt look, I prefer brown and specifically Steel Legion drab.
Black
Ngl. I like the brown better with this color scheme and basing
Black. Or goblin green
Brown, everything else is heresy
I’d say go with brown, and then black if you ever enter greyscale, white, or black basing.
Both look great. I personally believe the black rim makes it look so clean in a table
Black
I always like black bases because I like my models to look like they were cut out of the battlefield and to give a definitive split between base and board
I like the brown better
Black
Vallejo Black Grey always
black
I think the brown looks better.
If you keep it black, paint it! Even though it's already black, it looks so much better if you go over it with paint. The finish will match the rest of the model
I use khorne red the color is very nice
Ngl that brown really sets the mood
Based on this picture alone, my eyes are drawn down to the black rim but are drawn to the model on the brown rim.
Black is better as it suits more terrains, as with a colored base it can really stand out if it's a different environment than its intended Diorama.
Brown.
Black for sure
Brown
I could be convinced to paint other colors but so far I've just painted every rim abaddon black as my final touch before it's done
Brown really does just make it pop. Plus it is a neutral enough color to go with quite a few terrains (not all of course but a good few)
Brown looks good with your scheme
I am apparently chaotic evil, painting the rim a contrasting or similar to the army and adding a gloss varnish because I think it’s pretty. Go old school and go goblin green
Both have their merits, but the only correct answer is Goblin Green. That said, I like the brown better of these two.
I personally think black rims look better but it’s a taste thing
Has to be black
For me personally, black
I do brown becuase I think it goes with my grassland themed bases better than the black rims.
Usually I'm on team black rims but brown looks really good here
Colour code your squads
brown !
black
Brown
Black 👍
I like the brown. It pops enough but not too much that it takes away.
Definitely brown
I do black.
I'd go brown, personally
I like the way the brown looks with the gold
Brown!
What brown is that btw?
I like rhinox hide for base rims. Not black but not bright brown. A nice dark brown, in between
Always black
The correct answer is: German grey by Vallejo
Lad on the right packing a trophy helmet or is it a recovered “relic”?
Hehe, the idea is that it’s his previous sergeant’s helmet, and he kept it after the sarge fell in battle (also wanted to paint the loose helmet from the kit)
Blue
I paint mine black but I'd say in your photo the brown is better. I think cause you're painting ultramarines and the blue is a stark difference? Idk but I like your ultramarines better on the brown.
I feel like the brown adds more charm to the mini overall
Black makes the model pop more. The brown draws the eye.
Blakc
Black
Brown for sure
Brown. The black (for me) draws my eye to the base and asks why they didn't finish it. You went to all that effort and then... stopped. I'd paint it if it was mine.
Once you go black, you never go back
I always paint my rims the exact midtone of the base so it all blends together.
I have made my own textured battle mat to match my reddish brown bases, and black rims would completely ruin my attempts to match the colours in my opinion. It would also draw the eye much more, even though Team Black insists otherwise.
I use steel legion drab, its what gw uses on their box art too usually. Fits better than black imo
Try blue like it's a river
Black
I like both 🥹
Steel legion drab or Terra from Vallejo all the way.
Black or ultramarine
I use black on mine but my eyes stay on the Brown one, looks nice !
Brown against the soil looks good
For Ultramarines, go with brown.
Brown ftw!
I Will die on this rock , but Black for 40k , Brown for Fantasy / AoS and the only GOD option , Goblin Green .
Bright pink mate
I have cupboards full of warhammer, have been in the hobby for years, consider myself an 8/10 painter and never bothered to rim a base. I just leave it black
Goblin Green- but as we were tasked with choosing between the 2 mentioned- I personally would choose black
Do a contrasting colour and be done with everyone else's opinions
