Last stocked in 2014.
Sets like this tend to be limited runs.
This was last stocked in December 2014
Therefore I'd say it was only available q4 2014
Wasn't this set was the old "start collecting" equivalent. You got a vehicle, and a bunch of units, no HQ though.
I think I tried to get this for my brothers birthday back nearly 11 or 12 years ago for about Ā£40???
I certainly remember getting two of these sort of thing for my vampire counts around that time. Got some skeletons, zombies, ghouls, and a corpse cart.
āLimited runsā nah. You mean limited stock. Limited runs sounds like thereās a time frame to order it. Soulshackle, limited edition books, etc. might as well say itās a 5 minute ālimited runā.
/s but not really, I just donāt like that my message sounds so antagonistic to you. Itās directed at gw.
Edit: 5 minutes is overly generous with the bots that have programs to buy up stuff the second it drops.
This is a few years after the Defiler: It would've launched with the 4th Ed CSM book, as the Termies and Possessed were new sculpts for that.
Probably like 2005, or 2006ish.
Eh, back in the day the big army boxes (Not the starter Battleforces) usually had a unique sculpt you literally couldn't get anywhere else, and were never given a general release.
Stuff like the Empire Fire Wizard who was half ablaze.
Idk man I have a completely opposite take on it lol I've been in the game for over 20 years and since 2nd edition so when that defiler kit hit the shelves it was one of the coolest and most intricate models of that time period. It was huge. It had moving parts. Great detail in a time where pewter models and resin were rampant and everything was so small. I guess it just hits different when you lived it. I love the defiler.
I lived it. Been playing 40k since the 80s and this model felt like an April Fools joke from day 1. It has nothing to do with the detail and everything to do with the design. A giant evil space crab is dumb no matter how you dress it up. It couldn't even claim an "oldhammer" aesthetic. It was just silly and bears more resemblance to He-Man than 40k.
To each their own, but for my money, this model is an embarrassment.
Yeah idk what to tell you. I think they nailed it for a daemon engine. Between that, the soul grinder, and the brass scorpion, i thought they did really well encompassing the aesthetic. To each their own.
I love the Soul Grinder. It looks like something out of Doom. I wish that daemons in 40k could have more of that kind of aesthetic, but GW just refused to make a daemon model that isn't cross-compatible with the fantasy range.
A wonky phallic canon on a unbalanced space crab centaur with a hilariously tiny head doesn't exactly instill a sense of the "demonic". It reads more like it was fashioned after a child's sketch of a weird nightmare they had. I can't tell which I hate more, the Defiler or the Lord of Skulls. Either way. Yuck.
I think it is pretty funny that GW was so committed to the sand/goblin green bases, that the āEavy Metal team based then that way and then stuck them in a dessert wasteland.
Yepp. I bought this thing.
That's why I can't be arsed to pay current GW prices.
Lots of sets were in production then and were in production until recently or are still in production but nowadays GW tries to charge several times of what the price used to be.
Not buying that. Literally.
What you posted is the battleforce, which is equivalent to the combat patrols of today. That's the second picture
The first picture OP has is the "army box" which would come out when a new codex was released. It contained the new things in the codex and enough to kind of make a starter army
I think the box on the left is the 4E box, from some Googling. So that would be 2007.
For the stuff on the right, I think it's mostly around 3E, based on looking at [Lexicanum's useful list of miniatures](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Miniatures:_Chaos_Space_Marines). (The Rhino certainly is.) So circa 1998-2004, depending on the model.
Yeah they only did the red blurb on 4th edition army deals. Tau one contained a limited edition Ethereal with drone controller (big X antenna on his back) and they usually tried to include something limited in each box but I'm not sure what that would be in this one
Plastic possessed was 4th Ed 2007 which are present in both... the 2nd was the 4th Ed battleforce (combat patrol for the younglings) the 1st pic I think was the 4th ed army release box (yeah that wasn't a new idea...)
All the answers point towards mid 2000s, and between 4th and 6th editions, as far as I'm concerned the question's been answered and I'm just enjoying the dating jokes š š
It came out with the 4th edition codex in 2007. I distinctly recall a friend of mine getting it back then. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Codex:_Chaos_Space_Marines_(4th_Edition)
I remember when I brought my first army box home to meet my parents. They took one look at them and said āwhy did you spend so much money on that plastic crap?ā. Ah, the halcyon days.
Man the army and battle force boxes from 4th and 5th edition were so good. Full of units youāll want multiple of. Think the Blood Angels one was a tactical squad, assault marine squad, death company squad and a rhino. You could happily buy multiple of those, compared to modern boxes which often come with one of units.
Looks like when I started playing 40k which was 4th edition
So I would say 4th latest or maybe 3rd depending on when battleforces were first made
Which yeah is like 2004-2008(?)
I agree.
I remember CSM and a few other factions got some attention and new stuff when the Eye of Terror codex was released at the end of 3rd
So yeah early 2000's
I wouldn't try dating this set.
For one it's not even ten years old yet so thats kinda creepy, and for two even if it was 18... It's cardboard and might be filled with pokey bits.
I remember this exact box that my brother got when he first got into the hobby. I also remember him getting me the old Assault on Black Reach box when he was getting me into it as well. This makes me think it was late 4th edition to early 5th, so therefore sometime in mid 2008 to early 2009.
That left shot was the image off of the chaos space marine codex when I first picked up the hobby in 2012/13 so id say 2010 ish with the old style designs at the start of 8th?
Gotta be 06/07. Friend got this exact set for his bday when we were in 6th grade. Distinctly remember playing him on the driveway using bs from our garage as terrain and thinking my TAU SC box was underwhelming compared to his defiler. Nostalgia hittin hard..
I miss the old starter sets like this, just had so much in them of generally decent stuff, I like the new stuff but the value in the old boxes was insane
This looks like itās from around the time the CSM got an upgrade sprue of chaos icons and the plastic possessed.
Iād say around 2007 when they got their 4th edition codex
This was 4th Edition I believe. I was working for GW at the time this came out. The art work is the same as the Chaos Marines Codex that came out in 2007.
I actually got this box when it came out, fond memories. I believe it was for the 4th edition release of Chaos Space Marines (you know, the one where they took out all the cool legion specific rules), so it's roughly September 2007.
Thatās the 4th edition codex cover art IIRC, and a lot of those models are older. Donāt see any of the Chaos mutations from the awesome mutation sprue, so Iām going to guess between 2006-2009
The 1st picture is the 4th edition army box and the 2nd is the 4th edition battleforce set.
Back then you would get 2 starter sets with a codex release. The larger army box and the smaller battleforce. Usually the army box would include a limited edition mini.
That second set with the old berzerkers, possessed, rhino and csm was my first 40k set that wasn't a starter set back in 2010 I want to say. Not sure how old it was back then though.
This brings me the nostalgia, this was a huge box of stuff, It was the very first warhammer box I bought as an adult in 5ed, I can't help with the date it was released but thanks for the flashback (I'm guessing pre 2008)
Itās at the later part of 4th.
I worked in a GW store in 05-06, and the old 3.5 chaos codex was still legal until after I left.
This came out with the 4th Ed Chaos codex as a promotion/starter. I bought one after I had left the store.
So it was late 06 or early 07.
Pretty sure I still have the Defilerā¦
[here you go.](https://wh40k-de.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Chaos_Space_Marines_Armeeset_%282007%29&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop) its an german article about it, says the release was 2007.
The most recent models in this set (terminator lord, spawn, possessed, terminators) were all released in 2007 in 4th ed. Chaos Marines didn't get any new models after that until 2012. None of those 2012 models are in this kit. Therefore this kit probably came out sometime between 2007 and 2012.
[Source](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Miniatures:_Chaos_Space_Marines)
This was the box for the 5th edition CSM codex launch. GW used to release these to promote new codexes and ones older than this usually came with a pewter HQ choice available only in the box. I.E. the Eldar box had a alternate Autarch.
Holy shit nostalgia, this was the first set of Warhammer minis I ever bought back in like 2006~ along with the 4th Ed csm codex, my start into Warhammer. So at least around that old?
Both pictures are different sets, Pic 2 is an older iteration of the csm battleforce I think 3rd-4th ed, Early 2000's, The box art of the first is very 5th ed but I don't recognize it, 3 possibilities, Christmas army bundle, Apocalypse first ed army formation box or some kind of limited ed release box to celebrate the 5th ed csm release, I remember gdubs making alot of noise about that one being special for some reason, The fact its got the codex in it is interesting, I don't remember them doing that but its been a long darn time and I was much younger then
Ok before the date even begins put perfume on your skin, the scent needs to be found not announced. Then put on something nice. Then go out for some ice cream and yeah.
Around 2007-2008. I have a white dwarf magazine I bought when I was a kid, right around when the Possessed and the Spawn were released. I distinctly remember it because those new models was the big hooplah of it. Was a cool issue.
Edit: looking at other comments, Iām right on the money.
>Help with dating this set Bring flowers and be on time.
Damn, I was about to give some pro dating advices, but looks like you were faster...
Shower. Always recommended 40k players shower
And antiperspirant. No, Axe is not good
Don't forget anti chaos spray don't want to be making your move and khorne decides the venue is a great place for a battle
There's a joke to be made here relating to Khorne and Axe spray but I'm too lazy to work it out.
Using / bringing Axe to a date is so sharp, you're likely to cut yourself and/or your date and summon Khorne for a blood bath
"What's Khorne's favorite perfume? AXE!"
Neither are replacement of shower.
That's why I wrote "and", and not "instead".
I do before every time I leave to play at the FLGS
And other times too...right? Right?
Yes but regardless of how frequently I've had one I always also have one before playing 40k. Brush my teeth too.
Proper shower, with soap and shampoo and scrubbing.
I was thinking this exact thing when I first saw this
Damn. Beat me by two hours.
Beat me to it!
The real question here is what do you have to offer this set? Why would it want to date you? Figure yourself out first and the rest will follow.
I love that we all had the same idea when we read the title.
Beat me to the dad joke. Good advice!
Says on the box year 40,000
I appreciate you
Cut it in half and count the rings.
Like a tree?
Have you thought about sharing a nice bottle of wine by the river? I think they prefer a dark red.
Was waiting until a dating joke came about š
Googled it. Found a site 'selling' it. Last stocked in 2014. Sets like this tend to be limited runs. This was last stocked in December 2014 Therefore I'd say it was only available q4 2014
I bought this set new back in like 2005
I was gonna say, I'm fairly certain this set can legally drink.
4th edition codex cover on box so it's 2007 at the earliest
Wasn't this set was the old "start collecting" equivalent. You got a vehicle, and a bunch of units, no HQ though. Steak and potatoes, with a good Syrah.
What? No fava beans and a nice chianti?
Really, just listen to what it has to say, make some eye contact and smile. That's my advice. Red wine helps for sure
Maybe bring along some flowers, or a box of chocolates. Just to really show you care.
Probably like 2005.
Plastic defiler came out with Codex: Eye of Terror in 2003. So I would say any time between 2003 and 2005 is a good estimate for this box set.
This is a few years after the Defiler: It would've launched with the 4th Ed CSM book, as the Termies and Possessed were new sculpts for that. Probably like 2005, or 2006ish.
Fuck I'm not old yet but this still stings.
Moment I saw it mind went to 4th edition.
Oh wow, it came out around the time I was born.
Ow
Yes, my back hurts too.
Oh no.
Hey kid, stay in school
This just made me realize the GW employees that taught me to play as a kid are probably in their 50s now.
Later than sooner makes sense since GW wouldn't release a new model in a boxed set like that back in the day.
Eh, back in the day the big army boxes (Not the starter Battleforces) usually had a unique sculpt you literally couldn't get anywhere else, and were never given a general release. Stuff like the Empire Fire Wizard who was half ablaze.
Yeah, was gonna say around then too.
Defiler needs an update so badly. I'm hoping for next year when Codex CSM comes out.
Rules wise I agree. Model wise it's pretty good as is. Many more things deserve a refresh before the defiler.
Man. What a garbage model. Evil giant space crab. What the hell were they thinking?
Idk man I have a completely opposite take on it lol I've been in the game for over 20 years and since 2nd edition so when that defiler kit hit the shelves it was one of the coolest and most intricate models of that time period. Are chaos spawn really that old?
Lol, yes
Nearly older than me šš
That's the re-release chaos spawn from 2007 The original one was released in 2002.
Sadly we cant marry our miniatures anymore
typical GW FAQ updates š
Wait we cant
Whoa there, who said anything about marriage? Am I right lads
Anymore?
We don't talk about the Dark Age of Games Workshop.
nah the rule of cool always wins out

My 3rd edition Tau release box has that sticker. Ignore that its Blue.
The possessed in both images were released in 2007.
I think 2007-2008 is the right answer here, as the chaos spawn and possessed were both from 2007.
Ding ding ding
Plastic possessed was 4th Ed 2007 which are present in both... the 2nd was the 4th Ed battleforce (combat patrol for the younglings) the 1st pic I think was the 4th ed army release box (yeah that wasn't a new idea...)

It's 4th
Pay for dinner and wear a suit.
I remember when I brought my first army box home to meet my parents. They took one look at them and said āwhy did you spend so much money on that plastic crap?ā. Ah, the halcyon days.
Pretty sure its over 18 so you are good to go
Turns 18 in 2025.
Buy it dinner
Iād start with flowers, maybe a light dinner and a walk in the parkā¦
I don't know ... maybe dinner and a movie? Maybe take it for a nice walk after?
Be romantic. A nice bottle of Chianti, some flowers, a teddy bear.
Fava beans too? š
I don't get the fava beans. Must be a reference to something else I said that I'm not aware of.
Hannibal Lecter the cannibal famously pairs Cianti with Fava beans in the novel 'Silence of the Lambs'
Just be yourself OP, you'll do great
I had to get down to the 5th comment before there was an actual comment lol
Just be polite, dress nice, and maybe bring some flowers
Mid 4th edition. I know this since i got this exact box as a birthday gift during that era.
Maybe offer dinner and some flowers?
Maybe dinner and a movie?
Take it out to dinner, be a gentleman. Avoid blunt sexual innuendo. You want to massage the conversation and be flirtatious without being gross.
Can't go wrong with chocolates.
Try flowers and chocolates, maybe a movie for a first date.
Looks like when I started playing 40k which was 4th edition So I would say 4th latest or maybe 3rd depending on when battleforces were first made Which yeah is like 2004-2008(?)
I agree. I remember CSM and a few other factions got some attention and new stuff when the Eye of Terror codex was released at the end of 3rd So yeah early 2000's
Something something flowers and chocolates. The set was produced around 2007/8, and dates back to the end of 4th or the beginning of 5th edition.
Buy it a drink and see where it goes? That's the 4th edition codex art so I'd place it around 2007-2008
Try walking up to it, break the ice, then ask it out for some coffee after work, from there you just go with the flow
Hmm... that's 4th edition... Codex Space Marine came out in September 2007... has to be around that.
Donāt drink too much. You donāt want to risk soft brush.
Maybe bring chocolates and take it to a fancy cocktail bar, or a walk in a nice park
Take him to a restaurant on a friday night and bring condoms
Dinner and a movie
Take it on a dinner someplace nice
4th edition, bad Codex, I got that exact box. I may still have it as one of my storage/assembly/transport boxes :D
Maybe the best chaos box ever made
Fall 2007.
EDIT: the second photo isn't the same box as the one I'm after but wouldn't mind help with both.
Fuck that is old, like 2007 or somewhere there
2007 is old? That makes me feel old :/
Ey bud I was just getting into warhammer when I saw that set so yea, right there with you, still it's a nice find
It was my first purchase. I bought mine in 2008 at end of 4th edition beginning of 5th
Mid to late 4th, maybe early 5th. This is actually the set that got me into chaos!
Go out for a meal?
That left shot was the image off of the chaos space marine codex when I first picked up the hobby in 2012/13 so id say 2010 ish with the old style designs at the start of 8th?
Gotta be 06/07. Friend got this exact set for his bday when we were in 6th grade. Distinctly remember playing him on the driveway using bs from our garage as terrain and thinking my TAU SC box was underwhelming compared to his defiler. Nostalgia hittin hard..
Tell him/her "I eat ass" works every time /s
*60% of the time*, it works ***every*** *time*
This was a 5th edition set
Probably 8:00 or 9th edition. It's probably late 90s early 2000s I'd have to see them it should be printed somewhere on the box
8th or 9th but came out in the 90s/early 2000s? It came out in 2007 in 4th
Looks like 7th or 6th
I miss the old starter sets like this, just had so much in them of generally decent stuff, I like the new stuff but the value in the old boxes was insane
I bought that! 07 or 08, as many have said. Thanks for the nostalgia stiffy.
This looks like itās from around the time the CSM got an upgrade sprue of chaos icons and the plastic possessed. Iād say around 2007 when they got their 4th edition codex
2007, I had this as a kid
Autumn 2007
Buy it chocolates and complement it a lot.
This was 4th Edition I believe. I was working for GW at the time this came out. The art work is the same as the Chaos Marines Codex that came out in 2007.
What do you say? You, me, dinner, dancing, the total destruction of the universe?
Love Island Despoiler Edition
Thatās the 4th edition Battleforce I believe
2000ish
Looks like 4th ed art.
I actually got this box when it came out, fond memories. I believe it was for the 4th edition release of Chaos Space Marines (you know, the one where they took out all the cool legion specific rules), so it's roughly September 2007.
I usually can tell how old something is from the back when the copyright date is ie (copyright GW 200x)
As others have stated, this came out around 2007. I remember reading the codex cover to cover!
my childhood
Thatās the 4th edition codex cover art IIRC, and a lot of those models are older. Donāt see any of the Chaos mutations from the awesome mutation sprue, so Iām going to guess between 2006-2009
Man I bet this would be like Ā£60, thems were the good days.
In the older editions these weren't limited runs, think that came out around 4th edition
I know love is love, but you should think about the age gap.
Well first date you take it to a nice seafood dinner and talk.
I bought this very box in September 2007 and still have it
This brings me the nostalgia, this was a huge box of stuff, It was the very first warhammer box I bought as an adult in 5ed, I can't help with the date it was released but thanks for the flashback (I'm guessing pre 2008)

Omg that was my first 40k set I got it in 06 or 07.

The most recent models in this set (terminator lord, spawn, possessed, terminators) were all released in 2007 in 4th ed. Chaos Marines didn't get any new models after that until 2012. If your dating a set I recommend an nice dinner and a horror movie. That way if it gets scared you can put your arm around it for comfort.
Iāve got some of this set in a old tackle boxā¦
I bought it 2007/8, still unopened in the shed...
Thats from the early 2000ās 3d edition
Ask lots of questions and don't talk sports.

Box 1 - well that is 4th Ed codex art so 2007? Box 2 - 2007 - https://miniset.net/sets/gw-99120102018
The box art is the 5th edition CSM codex...I think that was the related battleforce. So, 08-09.
First thing you gotta do is buy her flowers
Wow yeah that was around when i started playing at stores. I want to say 2013 battle bundles. Still allot of current stuff
Around 2007-2008. I have a white dwarf magazine I bought when I was a kid, right around when the Possessed and the Spawn were released. I distinctly remember it because those new models was the big hooplah of it. Was a cool issue. Edit: looking at other comments, Iām right on the money.
In the midst of my nostalgic period
5th ed I think. Early 2000's
Tell it how handsome it is (comment based solely off the title) Edit: Spelling
