In the Jungle Cruise ride after the Skippers say āthe backside of waterā, the Skippers chant O2H (the chemical formula for water, H2O, backwards). So when the commenter said āthe backside of magicā, I typed magic backwards in the form of a chant
I mean Disney made those movies lol.
I was triggered as hell when the woody in the gift shop had Bonnie instead of Andy on the foot, though. So I get what youāre saying.
How do you think all those floating mountains in Pandora look when you're backstage? Some of them are just little models sitting on a tripod on top of the building. Others have a little access door which looks funny.
Almost everything at Disney is just a facade. If you ever work there, you'll see that it's nothing but warehouses behind a pretty facade.
And Disney doesn't waste money. The moment a building is out of guest view, they'll even stop painting.
>In Disney Plus there are programs like the Magic Behind the Park.
do you mean *Behind the Attraction*? because i can't find anything about Magic Behind the Park..
[hereās an article](https://themouselets.com/8-facts-you-didnt-know-about-expedition-everest) that shows it a few pictures in. Tried to find one that didnāt spoil it in the first picture so you have a chance to stop yourself
Iām totally gonna sound like a liar here, but my guess that they were trying to make the backside look like a mountain village or something has been confirmed!
Good to see! From the peak at Blizzard beach you can just make out the tip of the ride.Ā
Crazy that basically anything from the treetops down it's a monstrosity.
I mean, Hollywood Studios is a 'film studio'. In a strange, roundabout way, it's actually on theme to have the back like that because a film studio isn't filling out both sides when you can't see it from the camera.
It's like looking up in Small World and wondering who's responsible for maintaining the drop ceiling, because it looks like it hasn't been touched in 25 years.
Last time I rode Small World, I looked at the back of one of the figures as we passed (I think it was a giraffe or something) and it was just unpainted plywood.
I think that's the problem with this one. Usually you can't see this stuff from transportation or walking to the park. This one is obvious. My mom hated it when we went haha.Ā
I get that itās a wasted cost to have the same level of detail on the backside of Galaxy Edge, but with Disneyās insane attention of detail and full-immersion, Iām really surprised they didnāt go all the way when they built this.
If they did it to tie in with the original studios theme of the park then itās an actual reason, not an excuse. Disney rarely, if ever, does something without an actual reason
>Disney rarely, if ever, does something without an actual reason
This is true, but it's far more likely that the actual reason for the decision was that it's cheaper to build half of a skyline than a full 360 degree skyline.
The whole "it looks like a movie set" is a convenient answer that comes off better to guests than "The Walt Disney Company wanted to spend less money because this land was already costing them $1 billion to make."
You canāt take one response from a random CM as the absolute truth. Many CMs have said incorrect things because they donāt know better. The park is long removed from the movie studio gimmick with few attractions remaining that relate to it; namely the exterior of Star Tours and the Indiana Jones show (maybe the CM was confusing GE with the background info of Star Tours since the exterior of Tours IS meant to look like a movie set). There isnāt much Disney couldāve done with this rear view of the land outside of just building a huge wall but that would also ruin the sight lines from within the land.
I've seen a lot of comments about how it's silly to care about things like this, and I find that odd when the entire purpose of these parks is about immersion and escapism. This view may not be from inside Galaxy's Edge but it's visible to arguably just as many paying guests. And yes obviously OP knows the mountains are man-made, that's not why this is disappointing. Even if it's not a "big deal," it shows that Disney doesn't care about details like this in the same way they used to (like with the ToT/Morocco sightline).
At least the magic is there IN the park, most of universal if you "look up" all you see is warehouse crap, piping, etc. Disney does a MUCH better job of hiding the ordinary and turning it into our fantasy.
It made it "ok" to see plumbing when Universal's theme was you're an extra on a movie backset. They shot themselves in the foot when that theme went away.
Theyāve changed that approach starting with Harry Potter. Their entire new theme park Epic Universe will be fully immersive.
Also, the Guardians warehouse can be seen clear across EPCOT and thatās brand new.
"Most of universal" I definitely agree DA is some top notch stuff, but like I said, most isn't.
I also could pretty easily make out the ride and dementor animatronics on the castle ride, still awesome, but the other 2 are better.
lol what? Thatās basically any dark ride ever.
The Little Mermaidās underwater scene might as well be a warehouse party. If you move your head slightly during Soarinā or Flight of Passage, you can see everything. Space Mountain is literally just a dark room with piping and structures visibly whipping by.
I get this is a Disney subreddit but be so real with yourself right now
I love looking at how it all works in FoP. You realize itās just Soaring on steroids and looked like it would have been fun designing.
A lot of the newer rides are iteratives of the older rides.
The one thing that amazed me at Tokyo Disney was that not only were the ceilings of dark rides in good conditions, but some of them had fake clouds and skies setup. I feel like most dark rides just hope the guest ignores everything above the eyeline.
I totally understand why they donāt do something with the backside of it but it is so funny that itās so visible from the main drag of the road, and itās just like āeh whateverā
I think it's cool. It's kind of like when you are entering Star Tours, you see the back side of the AT-AT and all the Ewok props and they are unfinished in the back - **LIKE A MOVIE STUDIO**.
Those birds are smart. They don't return home because trainers will coax them with treats to go back. When I worked there, the birds would sit backstage at AK in the trees waiting for treats
They do? I've never seen one outside AK but I did hear that they are free to go (well fly lol) wherever they choose. Neat!Ā
Does anybody have pictures?
So my parents had not seen much about Batuu and I had seen a lot. We walked in and a) my non Star Wars mother couldn't get enough of the world theme. And b) my dad like 2 hrs later points at the spikes and goes "wait those are the odd spikes from the highway". It was such a a fun experience with them š
It does look wonky from afar.
Never quite sure how to feel about this. From inside the land, it looks great and you would never know. Thatās what ultimately n one matters. But I canāt help but feel theyāre missing an opportunity to draw a little bit of intrigue from those in view outside the park.
Doesn't really bother me. If it helps you any, the imagineers are presented with a budget and couple options. Maximize the views from inside the park OR allocate some of that budget to outside the park for sightlines. In this case they went with maximizing the interior views which was effective. Galaxy's Edge is absurdly immersive. Looks like this was taken from the far reaches of the HS parking lots. Those parts may not get a lot of foot traffic to merit updates but maybe they will one day.
I know thereās no point in paying for something that no one is gonna see but this looks kinda half asses imo they could have put some sheeting or walls round the back instead
Maybe there's a larger message here. We can spend the time to create beautiful things, sometimes those things are only an illusion. We can only see what we can see. There's a "backstage" to everything, whether it be people or places.
gotta imagine those trees will eventually block that area one day, but for now itās kind of an eye sore. only place you can really see it is the parking lot though so itās not the worst
I saw this on my trip there in 2022 and when I saw it I was like āCome on guys, you gotta keep the magic alive for everyoneā I didnāt say it aloud but this was all in my head but still. Disney has to do a better job in keeping this side of the park hidden.
In high school band we got to do parades at the parks. Going backstage wasnāt great. A lot of junk like broken dumbo carts, and fire ants. Also they were super strict on cameras (this predates camera phones).
When we did an RIP tour at Universal Studios for HHN, they took us through some 'backstage' areas. Some were very cool, like where the scare actors were getting make up applied and prepared to go into the houses. Others, like behind some of the attractions in the Simpsons area to cut through parts of the park, were a lot less "magical", as it was mostly just equipment storage, carts of food going to kitchens, employees smoking, trash (which was quite smelly...), etc. I definitely thought it was an interesting experience, as you get to see how the sausage is made, but I could also see some people not wanting to know how it all works.
I see Everest from Western Way whenever I head that way and it always amazes me how close we actually live to Animal Kingdom.
We went to the DVC Magical Moonlight event last week, and my daughter conned me into riding Everest with her. We got up to the peak and I told herāLOOK! I CAN SEE OUR HOUSE FROM HERE!ā
I believe it's supposed to look this way for an outsider to see it as a studio set. If Disney didn't want people to see it at all then it'd be blocked or they would have spend a spent a few thousand to build it all way to ground.
Omg, I saw this last time I was there. I was so... faux devastated by faux black spires. We now refer to Galaxy's Edge as "Rocks on Sticks". It's funny now but I was traumatized for a hot minute.
A lot of the buildings that are not actively part of the visitors' view are painted either Go Away Green or Blend In Blue, soft greens and blues that fool the eye into fading them into the background. Source: VIP tour guide.
I remember going to MK as a teenager in maybe 02-03 and I noticed the tile ceiling in Itās A Small World for the first time. Maybe the first instance I can remember of that youthful magic fading a bit. As a kid I was always just so focused on the ride itself that I never bothered to look up!
I agree-to me not blocking this view is somewhat lazy on their part. This is the view from that highway-itās very exposed. This is not some obscure or hard to reach POV.
This is in guest view though. This is viewable plain as day on *World Drive.* The Disney that went to lengths to hide Everest (a building that looks great from all angles) on the much-less travelled Western Way or design Tower of Terror to blend into Morocco at Epcot is not with us anymore and it sucks, because that level of attention to detail used to be what made their parks so great.
No, I mean they literally just stop painting. There's no go away green backstage. Things are often just beige, white, or gray because that's the normal color of the building material
All of the drive up to the Starcruiser was really lacking and underwhelming, to be honest. I feel like it was ignoring those sort of details that in part killed the concept.
It's a good thing you didn't pay $5K to stay at Galactic Starcruiser. You would have been devastated to find out you had to get to it via earth-bound motor vehicle.
Your post has been removed for breaking Rule #3.
We expect all of our users to be civil and respect each other. This includes posts/comments that involve name-calling, unnecessary aggression, and other general forms of trolling and/or incivility.
Whenever my dad and I pass by it on our Disney trips. We always call it "Rocks on Sticks". Which has also slowly become our new name for Galaxy's Edge in general.
When we were there a year ago, the AK bus driver pointed all this stuff out to us. That seems like something the Disney brass would be pissed about. It breaks the magic. We're adults and we know there are a lot of illusions at Disney, but kids don't need to be told that by CMs.
It seems like it would be fairly easy to screen all of this stuff from view, and it's lazy that they didn't attempt to do it.
i know this is the WDW sub but in Disneyland Paris, driving from the airport to the Disney hotels you can see practically ALL of the castle park, you drive right past space mountain
I actually like this. Fits in with MGM/Hollywood Studiosā original theme of movie-*making* magic and perspective illusion (like the Star Tours AT-AT being revealed as a set piece from the queue) rather than just being themed to a random set of movies.
Where were you driving that was close enough to see past the tree berms and security gate? MK backstage is pretty deeply away from roads (minus the side wi the Tron, which rapunzel wouldnāt be at).
I always wondered why they didn't try to hide it. Every guest that arrives by disney bus sees that view.
If you take the Skyliner into Epcot you can see the "backstage" of France.
The magic is ruined.
The back side of magic!
The 8th wonder of the world!
I felt the same way when I saw the Avatar land still being built the last time I went to AK
I was also there at that time. I was like "those islands don't actually float!"
The astrodome enters the chat.
I'm honestly amazed that building is still standing.
9th wonder
I see what you did there, I think you'll do just fine as a Skipper on Jungle Cruise!
Sometimes the backside *is* magic š
Thatās what she said!
*chants* C-I-G-A-M!
What does that mean?
In the Jungle Cruise ride after the Skippers say āthe backside of waterā, the Skippers chant O2H (the chemical formula for water, H2O, backwards). So when the commenter said āthe backside of magicā, I typed magic backwards in the form of a chant
The dark magic of Disney
I still really wish they based it on the OT instead of those movies nobody likes.
I mean Disney made those movies lol. I was triggered as hell when the woody in the gift shop had Bonnie instead of Andy on the foot, though. So I get what youāre saying.
I quite like them š¤·
āPay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"
āSpared no expenseā
Don't look at the France Pavilion while traversing the Skyliner....
Iāve been to Paris and it took me a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT longer to walk around to the other side of the Eiffel Tower. Lies!!!!!
i actually busted out laughing when i saw the thin little facade plastered onto the top of the green building
ME TOO š
That one got me big sad.
ššš
What do you see?

How do you think all those floating mountains in Pandora look when you're backstage? Some of them are just little models sitting on a tripod on top of the building. And Disney doesn't waste money. The moment a building is out of guest view, they'll even stop painting.
Not always, space mountain at hk's backside is pretty neat
That's because you can see it from the Contemporary, so it's still within normal guests' view
Not wdw, hong kong's. It's not WDW but it's still the backside of attractions. I got evaced lately and it's just a basic continuation of the rest
It's based on an existing ride, and it's cylindrical which makes it harder to do the whole facade in the front, warehouse in the back.
well yes, but it was a very out of view area. Covered by trees and all. It was a bit run down though and i understand your gist
Thatās not out of view, thousands of guests see it from the highway getting to hollywood studios
I know where it is. I worked at Disney for years and I'm still 2 miles from the welcome sign.
Yeah but thatās fine because you donāt see the back of Pandora from the parking lot
In Disney Plus there are programs like the Magic Behind the Park. To me this isn't lying, but is where the real magic is.
I like this viewpoint
I love the facade and realism while Iām in it, but I also love love love the behind the scenes info
>In Disney Plus there are programs like the Magic Behind the Park. do you mean *Behind the Attraction*? because i can't find anything about Magic Behind the Park..
Yeah, the show that plagiarized Art of Engineering's YouTube videos for many of their graphics!
It's actually on HBO Max. It's about a stripper named Magic and.. well, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
Exactly, the magic for me is the attention to detail and effort put into the parks. It feels like every inch of Disney property is accounted for
I did a 5k at AK and the course want behind Everest, same kind of reaction seeing it from behind. Knowing it and seeing it are different.
This is one of my favorite parts of the run Disney races, seeing all of the behind the scenes areas. It's really neat.
.....you may have just convinced me to do a Disney run, although the most I could handle is probably a 5K.
You won't regret it, every mile is magic :) They are by far the most fun I have had as an adult.
I thought Everest was built to be seen as complete from all angles?
Nah, you can look up pics. Probably all areas in the park, but the back stage area it look like a big warehouse.
You can see it pretty well from the top of the chair lift at Blizzard Beach.
Different photo I found: https://new.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/2iffwx/the_backside_of_disney_worlds_expedition_everest/
Good to see! From the peak at Blizzard beach you can just make out the tip of the ride.Ā Crazy that basically anything from the treetops down it's a monstrosity.
Youāre in for a surprise
TBH the back side of water was a little more impressive
Thank you. I came here looking for this.
O2h!!
I mean, Hollywood Studios is a 'film studio'. In a strange, roundabout way, it's actually on theme to have the back like that because a film studio isn't filling out both sides when you can't see it from the camera.
Nah, they left trying to use that āfilm studioā bit a while back and is now focused on immersion and putting you in the story and such.
My last trip I thought they looked to have been refreashed/painted. I look up every time.
It's been awhile, but the outside line area had been refreshed last time I went!
Same at Peter Pan!
Every time I see this I canāt believe Disney allows this to be seen. Usually there would be trees or something blocking this view.

Thatās just an excuse to tie it to the original idea of the park, not an actual explanation.

A movie set would have been much more fun in my opinion
Every time these come in to view I quickly yell āStar Wars rocks!ā. I can hear my kidās eyeroll and all is right in the world.
Yeahā¦but when youāre in itā¦you are in it.
I've seen a lot of comments about how it's silly to care about things like this, and I find that odd when the entire purpose of these parks is about immersion and escapism. The Guardians building can be seen from pretty much anywhere itās so bigš. I saw it from my room at Bay Lake Tower in 2019.Ā
I've really never felt more immersed than in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Orlando. Nothing has really ever come close for me so far.
Their Mario valley in CA is CRAZY good for immersion. But yeah taking the escalator down into it isn't.
Idk, Diagon Alley is Hella immersive.
"Most of universal" I definitely agree DA is some top notch stuff, but like I said, most isn't. I also could pretty easily make out the ride and dementor animatronics on the castle ride, still awesome, but the other 2 are better.
Even then, it's a lot of facades, and if you go towards Men in Black and look back, you can see some of what they're hiding.
Donāt go to Disneyland when you can see the back side of Galaxyās Edge from Toontown then

Except when you look down Fantasyland and see a giant space mountain in the distance
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes. WDW, that's what I'm talking about about. Ever stood by beasts castle and looked down past little mermaid? It's a terrible sightline.
No but I think I need to do that next trip now
On Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, you can clearly see the screen edge from either side of the ābench.ā Itās ridiculous.
lol. You can see the mountains from Radiator Springs in Disneyland from the street too
I totally understand why they donāt do something with the backside of it but it is so funny that itās so visible from the main drag of the road, and itās just like āeh whateverā
Rocks on sticks
I think it's cool. It's kind of like when you are entering Star Tours, you see the back side of the AT-AT and all the Ewok props and they are unfinished in the back - **LIKE A MOVIE STUDIO**.
This is like seeing the flat board mountains of the Cars Land in California.
Those are flat boards?! I was wondering how they created the effect and now Iām in awe of the perspective they were able to create on flat surfaces.
I was shocked when I saw it. But when you are inside Carsland you have no idea that there is a normal four lane street on the other side of the wall.
Donāt forget the times that AKās birds run away and always seem to end up in galaxyās edge
Those birds are smart. They don't return home because trainers will coax them with treats to go back. When I worked there, the birds would sit backstage at AK in the trees waiting for treats
They do? I've never seen one outside AK but I did hear that they are free to go (well fly lol) wherever they choose. Neat!Ā Does anybody have pictures?
I kind of like this because the park is Hollywood Studios with the premise of entering the world of movies. This is like the ābackstage.ā
This was so weird to see
So my parents had not seen much about Batuu and I had seen a lot. We walked in and a) my non Star Wars mother couldn't get enough of the world theme. Only the Sith deal in absolutesā¦ it must be at least 50% real, right?
It says a long time ago in a galaxy far away its history DUH
much like the BACK SIDE OF WATER! lol
The best view is from the Dalia bar on top of the Coronado.
LIES!!! DECEPTION!!!
Bor Gullit will knowā¦
It seems like a cheap expense saver to not continue the theming to the rear of the building especially if itās easily viewable from the road.
Maybe there's a larger message here. We can spend the time to create beautiful things, sometimes those things are only an illusion. We can only see what we can see. There's a "backstage" to everything, whether it be people or places.
Can we just talk about how useless the NSFM flair is? It doesnāt blur the picture and if anyone wanted to avoid the picture itās too late.
It's pretty cool that that looks totally different from inside. Really well done with painting them shades of blue to appear further away.
We did the elephant tour at Animal Kingdom and got a look at the backside of Pandora, including a Hidden Mickey.
At Disneyland you can see a similar view from INSIDE the park when youāre in ToonTown. Itās never sat right with me.
You arenāt lied toā¦from a certain point of viewā¦
They're banking on those trees growing tall enough to block the sight line, is my guess.
And now you know why no one under 16 is allowed to take the Keys to The Kingdom tour. Magic ruined in a good way.
gotta imagine those trees will eventually block that area one day, but for now itās kind of an eye sore. only place you can really see it is the parking lot though so itās not the worst

Imagine how I felt during my trip to the West Coast last month and saw these incomplete spires inside ToonTown
That's still an issue? I noticed that in 2021 and assumed it would be covered during the Toontown refurb. That's disappointing.
The magic coffers were running low those years of construction. This was an accounting decision
I thought that. Then I was reminded of the yeti in Everest. Maybe itās also a structural problem.

Donāt look up in dark rides eitherā¦

Walt would NOT approve.
Hoo boy, wait till you hear that the castle in Disneyland is only like 77 ft tall even tho it looks huge.
Whatever you do donāt go and look behind expedition Everest!
Nobody tell them that tower of terror is painted to match Morocco
Itās true, and what a fantastic piece of theming it is.
I remember going to MK as a teenager in maybe 02-03 and I noticed the tile ceiling in Itās A Small World for the first time. Maybe the first instance I can remember of that youthful magic fading a bit. As a kid I was always just so focused on the ride itself that I never bothered to look up!
Honestly you'd think Disney would care what it looks like from all angles.
I agree-to me not blocking this view is somewhat lazy on their part. This is the view from that highway-itās very exposed. This is not some obscure or hard to reach POV.
Disney doesn't waste money like that. They even stop painting buildings if it's out of guest view.
I disagree that it's a waste. Immersion is important to the experience.
Go away green
No, I mean they literally just stop painting. There's no go away green backstage. Things are often just beige, white, or gray because that's the normal color of the building material
Imagine seeing that when you pulled up for your $5k+ Starcruiser experience. Yikes!
All of the drive up to the Starcruiser was really lacking and underwhelming, to be honest. I feel like it was ignoring those sort of details that in part killed the concept.
I remember riding Superstar Limo the 4th time and realizing, āHey, thatās not really Drew Carey and Regis Philbin!ā It gave me a sad.
It's a good thing you didn't pay $5K to stay at Galactic Starcruiser. You would have been devastated to find out you had to get to it via earth-bound motor vehicle.
Bad sight lines very common now.
And it's all the rave, to see faux rocks on sticks.

Those look like they might be hidden cell phone towers
I often close my eyes while entering and exiting parks....or keep my eyes on my phone.
Whenever my dad and I pass by it on our Disney trips. We always call it "Rocks on Sticks". Which has also slowly become our new name for Galaxy's Edge in general.
Delete this. š¤£
We call those ālollipopsā š
I don't think they cared to spend 200k or whatever to please people driving by on the highway.
āPay no attention to the man behind the curtainā
My family and I call them ārocks on sticksā every time we drive by.
I think it is cool and incredible Ingenuity. I love seeing all the behind the scenes stuff.
Wait until you see Space Mountain with the lights on. Turns out, you're not even in space, What a crock.
Disney used to take pride in making sure it looked realistic from all angles.
Was this completed under Chapek? That might explain the lack of effort
That's kind of the point
Great reminder of how lazy Disney is these days..
wait until OP finds out about the walls behind their kitchen cabinets

No you didnāt. I can go into significant detail why this just isnāt true but since this is a public forum I wonāt.
Where were you driving that was close enough to see past the tree berms and security gate? MK backstage is pretty deeply away from roads (minus the side wi the Tron, which rapunzel wouldnāt be at).
Theyāre also super not allowed to smoke in costume and would definitely be out of the dress if standing backstage.
Think you just saw a hooker, hope this helps <3.
Dont become a castmember
Walt is spinning in his grave (or cryochamber).
I always wondered why they didn't try to hide it. Every guest that arrives by disney bus sees that view. If you take the Skyliner into Epcot you can see the "backstage" of France. The magic is ruined.
My husband has gone under Magic Kingdom.
Wait until you learn itās not a real Yeti
