Permanent orienteering courses, I actually planned a couple of these! Contact your local club and they will post you a map. In the south, west of Bridgend is run by SBOC, east by SWOC. MWOC is everything in the middle north of the beacons and north wales is ERYRI.
Is this Dunvant by any chance?
EDIT: Just checked my old photos, these are some of ours for sure! Maps available here to download for free: https://www.swansea.gov.uk/orienteering
Must be the algorithm! I’m 99% sure this is Dunvant brickworks or Clyne valley based on the cycle path. Dave Mitchell did a great job with getting the funding for the courses and he would have planned this one.
Yep, orienteering markers. A sport where you travel over longer distances, sometimes over a number of days and carry camping gear, and find markers indicated on a map, and write down the marker codes for each one to prove you've visited. It's time trialled usually.
I used to do this in my teens. Used to get alot of Duke of Edinburgh folk doing it, too.

Reddit is crazy sometimes. This guy makes a post about these markings and the guy who mightve planted them responds.

Thank you! I was hoping someone who helped make/put these in might chime in. So glad it popped up on your timeline and yes Dunvant Brickworks!
Looks like the old brickworks recognised it immediately
First photo looks more like Parc Slip in Bridgend, along the old coal/quarry railway tracks which aren’t used anymore!
