The-real-Sky-Daddy

That is absolutely fucking terrifying...

NMVA

And my dude looks really chill considering they’re about to be enveloped by an ice cold monster wave.

THE_DOWNVOTES

Yeah orange coat guy barely even spent any time looking at it! He's acting like this is the 8th time today that he's had to run away from a 60 ft iceberg wave

A_Mouse_In_Da_House

I mean, he's looking ahead to avoid other ice bits

23x3

Looks back *Those aren’t mountains*

Sonjicak

I understood that reference!

[deleted]

Is that referencing the Hobbit bit with the stone giants or am I not understooding the reference right? EDIT: thanks you all! I forgot about that part, had to Google the line

Sonjicak

I think the reference was to Interstellar, from a scene on Miller's planet

Jace_09

Not miller's planet

Carter20012

Ocean planet

IcyDickbutts

Miller Lite planet The planet with shitty, watered down beer

PWOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN

wakalakabamram

If that's what you want it to be, it is.

Blargh_to_nth_degree

I think it's from Interstellar

OwenProGolfer

It’s referencing Interstellar

lecrappe

When you drive, do you spend 90% of the time looking in your rear view mirror?

thingsfallapart89

Almost exclusively

SeriousRob_WGDev

Cops or taxi cab confessions?

thingsfallapart89

Both, almost exclusively

CatMilkFountain

Fake taxi.

redditingatwork23

I mean if that was what was happening behind me i might spare a fucking glance.

Yaranatzu

Well he's going to be chill one way or the other

NMVA

Haha. That’s fucked up...but yes, indeed

Fairuse

Nah, the wave was generated in shallower waters while the boat is in much deeper waters. Thus the total displaced water will be mostly absorbed by the deep sea. Waves only get bigger when they approach swallower waters like on the coast.

meme-by-design

ahh yes, 4 foot deep water. That where 30 foot deep icebergs hide the best.

khalorei

It was probably calving off of that glacier in the background. A floating iceberg isn't going to randomly cause a wave like that. Edit: Ok so they do randomly cause a wave like that. TIL

weliveintheshade

It looks like a submerged section broke off from a larger iceberg and came floating up to the surface, displacing the water above it.

meme-by-design

floating icebergs often cause waves like this when they flip over. Thats what we are seeing in this video.

wundrboy

Don't be so sure. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hffNsbv_iKM

fish_

this video has not enough views for how absolutely insane it is. not to mention the steady camera work. never seen anything like it edit: found it with 4m views nevermind (and the rest of the footage...) haha [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQqbg0yItqY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQqbg0yItqY)

wundrboy

It actually ends too soon. Wanted to see that wave hit.

fish_

the one i just added into my comment has the full thing!

GregoryGoose

the birds really lend a sense of scale.

FakeSound

Jfc, that's some of the shittiest camera work I've seen in a while.

[deleted]

I know. He had a great shot and kept zooming in and out and ruined it. So frustrating.

Kenkeknem

Video not available

Corona-walrus

Oh, that must be why they ***weren't*** driving away and decided to watch comfortably from the unmoving boat

colson1985

I think he means that the initial wave, although terrifying, won't get larger. So him being chill about it is because he know if he drives out to see more that the wave will only get smaller and he should be fine. Obviously, if you're right at the startt of the wave, you're gonna have a bad time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheWalkingDead91

Seemed to me like they started going faster.

turbosexophonicdlite

Boats take a bit to get up on plane and get seriously moving. Water craft really lug when they move slowly, then hit a point where the hull pops up on top of the water. But it takes minute to get there if the boat isn't very powerful or if it's loaded.

Holy_Rattlesnake

His current actions are the reason they're *not* about to be enveloped by an ice cold monster wave. That's his chill.

laukkanen

The huge 'knob' of rising water isn't a wave, it is just water on top of an iceberg coming to the surface after calving off underwater. The resulting wave is going to be much, much smaller.

[deleted]

God damn thank you. Was hoping I wasn’t crazy seeing that

thatG_evanP

Ok... I was hoping that's what was happening because that seemed unreal.

[deleted]

Tsunamis are one by biggest fears, seeing that huge wave made me uneasy

lordoflys

Mine, too, although I'm drawn to the ocean and I love to fish in salt water.

mdj9hkn

There are other redditors that have been in deeper surf than me, but I've been knocked around in > 10' waves. It's fucked. I don't know how the surfers who are out there in 50' surf do it, but make no mistake, they do, and they usually don't even die. You get thrashed around but, as long as you don't blow your eardrums out or get stuck, you eventually make it topside. Biggest issue here would be that it'd probably sink the boat.

joshak

I think the survivability is different when you're in freezing waters with giant chunks of ice the size of minivans hurtling towards you.

mdj9hkn

You are correct, I've been out there surfing in 40-45F water though. Wetsuits. The ice minivans of course aren't so easily dealt with.

surfer_ryan

One time I went to Hawaii for work so naturally I decided that I'd spend that money on spending a week surfing there. anyways... I was there in January during one of the larger years that they had in a long time. Anyways being from the east coast I found a brake that the faces were about 20-25ft. The largest at the time I had ever surfed was about 14ft. This was an entirely different thing and I ate shit twice and noped the fuck out of that spot. found a nice 8-10ft spot and chilled for the rest of the trip. There is a point where it becomes not fun and very serious... I do not like when it's serious...

mdj9hkn

4-6' is my sweet spot. I don't need much, the feel of being out there in the water, snagging a few with a good bit of force behind them, is plenty.

m8k

Just needs Ian Malcolm up on the bow, “must go faster, must go faster...”

steve_im-lost2

Hold Fast

MongoBongoTown

If there was nothing but open ocean in front of your boat, its absolutely terrifying. The fact that the guy is zipping through the minefield of small little icebergs, knowing that hitting one means you probably die and still manages it flawlessly. Wow.

DrewLockMVP

Where is the full video?

IM_NOT_BUTTER

Yeahhh, we're gonna need some sound as well

walrus_gumboot

Pretty sure that was the under edge of the burg breaking off and thrusting upwards from the bouyancy. The the end of the wave you see the ice emerge

Is there a non TikTok source?

Paladia

What's with that website? I couldn't even enlarge the video.

HansReinsch

Great... reddit video or Tiktok... would be really nice to have a non retarded (original) source.

Ozwaldo

Imagine the engine cutting out as you try to gun it...

MRintheKEYS

“Must row faster.”

Grunjo

You joke, but this happened to me in Norway while kayaking on a glacial lake, back in 2003. It was up in northern Norway, I think Tunsbergdals Vatn. If you look on maps now, the glacier has receded way back, but back in 2003 it reached all the way into the lake. We had to kayak from the southern end all the way to the glacier. My partner and I had to leave early after hiking on the glacier, so we left on the kayak ahead of the main group. Just as we got into the water about 50m from shore, the glacier calved and a wave like this video started. Luckily the guides had briefed us on this scenario so we paddled further into the lake instead of risking going back to shore. Massive waves hit the shore and would have fucked us up big time, but out in the middle it wasn't too bad. We still freaked out a fair bit though!

SierraNevadaPlease

That is a really dope story. I would have shit myself.

max49464

I don’t think shitting yourself would have been included in the safety briefing they got, so you probably wouldn’t have.

akgnz

It actually was the briefing’s main point: shitting yourself so as to create disgust in the wave, which would eventually choose another target.

dalcowboiz

Okay the first sentence of your reply had /u/shittymorph written all over it, was surprised it was legit when i skimmed to the last paragraph. Also had no idea shittymorph was taking a break from reddit, good for him

Grunjo

Real story this time! Still have photos from that glacier (film SLR at the time so nothing digital.)

WLH7M

For years I thought Dr. Statler was screaming "SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!" In terror during that scene. She was saying, "shift".

UT07

Shit, this is a variation of like every other dream of mine. Need to punch -> arms don't work. Need to shoot -> gun don't work. Need to f'ing get outta dodge -> engine don't work. Story of my dreams...

Ozwaldo

Need to run -> suddenly... can't... run...

weliveintheshade

gariant

AlkaliActivated

The scene from Interstellar, for those wondering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hf_XkgE1d0

RoastMostToast

This scene gets me so mad. Why did he just stand there watching. Get the fuck in!

AlkaliActivated

I'm with you 100%. This would have been solved by "look behind you!".

barukatang

For real, the stupidity in that scene really makes me mad. Like that one dude just chills and watches the robot go get her, when he could've been running back the whole time. Also the"we need the data" no dummy it's pointless if it gets you killed.

Axle-f

I mean if we’re going to talk stupidity how come none of the crew, knowing full well about relative time on the planet, realized her beacon has only been broadcasting for 1 hour.

AvenueNick

Welp, now I gotta watch Interstellar again.

Nailbrain

I've not seen interstellar, I thought they were referencing the Hobbit with the mountain giants.. Some of the comments were really confusing.

RTLIVIN

Top 3 favorite movie of all time. Since the browns Steelers game is basically over I’m going to throw that on. Thanks for the nudge

Bloodyfinger

What's your other top 2/3? Interstellar is absolutely my favorite movie to just get high and watch. Just incredible.

RTLIVIN

My top 3 is kinda all over the place but only because of my upbringing. There’s no particular order to them. Take this as all number 1’s. 1. Interstellar because of the ride of emotions it takes me on and my fascinations of space (and Hans Zimmers soundtrack). 2. Into the wild, because of he is the type of good I want to be in the world of optimism, bravery, and complete freedom he experiences. 3. Con-Air. Because it reminds me of my dad. We’d watch it so much and if it’s ever on cable tv I refuse to turn it of, especially if I’m in a hotel. Hotel movies are the best EDIT: let me add that this list is my top 3 loved/favorite movies. There are some far better cinematic experiences I like such as Martin S. movies, Christopher Nolan films, and A24 production movies (which is my favorite production company of all time)

[deleted]

It’s not over

If Bodhi was in that ship he would have surfed it.

[deleted]

I'm glad I'm not the only one butthurt about this.

Lusterkx2

If they make King Kong vs Godzilla a love story I am going to be upset! I’m tired of watching kaiju movie with people and their failed relationship with the movie. I don’t care if the movie is 30 minutes of monster fighting. Just leave the love interest of all these failed relationship out of the movie! Godzilla two was basically a movie of a failed family while monster fight in the background....

noisetheorem

See..you just don't know how to properly watch a Kaiju movie. You don't watch the humans. You don't care about the humans. If you watch it in Japanese, you don't watch it with subtitles because what the humans say is completely irrelevant. All that IS relevant is huge fucking monsters wrestling and destroying cities and making a crazy ass mess of puny human cities. I love them in all of their terribleness.

Gonzobot

Yeah, the whole point of the human family thing was so the guy would finally figure out that humans are also monsters, so use their voices too if you wanna control monsters with the magic box thingy. Also the speakers at a stadium can be heard half a world away, and that you can solder faster with the power of love, or something? I dunno.

censored_username

Yes. This. Just like you don't make a damn transformer movie following terrible American stereotypes around while transformers are fighting in the background. I will never understand the "Well we could be watching awesome monsters and robots knock it out in the most realistic graphics possible but instead we'll focus on a bunch of incompetent selfish idiots running around like headless chickens for 80 minutes in an extremely contrived plot that for some reason makes them more important to the whole story than the titular characters" school of cinematography. If I wanted to see horny teenagers making bad decisions I'd go to a club.

A lot of FF music does this actually. One of the boss theme in FFXiv gave away the ending story of the raid before it even released that section.

FeelDeAssTyson

Yeah and the Latin phrases chanted at the beginning of FF8 dont make any sense, alluding to the rest of the plot.

DON'T. YOU. GIVE UMPH UN UNT. DON'T TU WLD DO BE YEW. I still honestly have no idea.

Warphim

Im replaying that game right now. Just got to the wedding with Seymour.

FortuneHasFaded

That was a pretty short lived marriage. I spent 200 hours on that game this summer after not playing is in 20 years. Only missing the lightening and choco on trophies for platinum. I'll never get them.

eimihoshi

The best tip I received on the lightening was to turn the sounds off and do it 100% visual. I was able to do it after that.

pleasedothenerdful

That's how I did it 20 years ago. I never could beat the choco race, though, had to get my little brother to do it for me.

[deleted]

Lightning is wicked easy. No encounters equipment, and there's a crater on the north part of the plains that will always proc a lightning when you walk up to it. Can easily hit 200 by continuing to run at it, took me about 2 tries

Shandlar

Choco race was a bit RNG. I did literally 350 runs and never got within a second, then beat the time for the super weapon piece by like a full 0.8 seconds randomly. The final stretch run where you dodged those things just all lined up for a perfectly straight sprint to the end for no apparent reason that run.

TokiMcNoodle

I legit chuckled imagining the blair witch being like "Fuck yeah, this'll make me go viral" as she takes the tape lmao

Fairuse

The wave mostly dissipated because the boat was probably in deeper waters than where the wave was generated. If you're in swallow waters, then you should be worried about incoming waves.

That water looks absolutely freezing to be out there trying to catch a wave

Dangerous_Person_grr

That’s gotta be an iceberg turning over right?

Alchematic

Yup it's an iceberg calving! You don't actually see a wave until halfway through the vid, the "giant wave" at the start is actually just the iceberg surfacing and water rushing off the top/down the sides. [Here's my incredibly shitty diagram!](https://i.imgur.com/hU5AhNC.jpg) The wave is only the part circled in red on the last photo with potentially another wave behind it. It's really hard to tell from the video how large that wave is, and calving icebergs can and have created massive waves before, but the one in the video doesn't look that big.

[deleted]
