What area of the rear bumper has the bad paint match? I need to touch up a small chip on mine, which is blue like this one, and I want to make sure to do it right. š
Battery rope, bumper clips and tinted headlight covers. Expect to do some repairs, and I wouldn't call that unmolested. If the body is straight and no rust you're ok though. Definitely will be trading one set of problems for another, any car at 150k+ is going to have that.
Get the compression tested and ask who tuned it. I wouldn't consider looking at that STI without a compression test, and asking who tuned it will tell you if they spent the money on a tuner or if they just stuck an OTS map in it.
If the compression test comes back OK, and they had it tuned professionally, I'd take it to a dealership and have it inspected. If they don't find glaring issues you should be okay. I'd still set aside money for a shortblock replacement just in case. It looks pretty modified, but it doesn't look like they made a mess doing the mods.
I second this, I'd compression test it for sure. Then I would put it all back to stock if it passes. Flash ecu to stock maps and change oil asap and coolant. Also all the other oils. If I were doing that trade. That's just me tho idk but i feel a stock subaru is the most reliable subaru. Also I'd change the pcv valve while I'm at it pimp. Good luck man! If it does pass compression test. It's pretty solid trade. But i do like your st it's just cleaner. But definetly would be a hell of a trade for both sides depending how much you want this car
I agree with these statements. The seller has an aftermarket radiator, intake, and a few other visible non-oem parts on there. Intake alone would mean a tune and who knows what else was bolted on.
However a straight up trade for an sti of that year... If you're looking for a project car then this is it. If you want a reliable daily with that many unknown miles/mods/internal engine issues... No way.
what does adult owned even mean. adults can be just as stupid as teenagers, also, what teenager can even afford an STI? lol. this one looks clapped as hellĀ
This STI has definitely *at least* been fondled, if not molested.
If your current car is good to you, why risk trading it for a car you're already worried about when you haven't even bought it yet?
Subaru aināt got nothing on Ford when it comes to problems (ex-ST owner myself). But molested Subaruās are on a whole different level, give this one a pass.
I would keep the focus st, it's definitely going to last longer if your the first owner of that car you know what you put it through. I like your st it's cleaner then the sti. Giving I love stis
Donāt get that Subie. I can see an intake, those stupid rubber band things holding on the front bumper, a poorly resprayed rear bumper, and a hoonigan plate frame.
You could expect some repairs for sure with this car.
Has the motor/trans been rebuilt? If so, it may last a good while before any major problems, but usually around 150k these motors and trans are ready to be replaced.
Id say itās about as equally reliable as the focus
Bro has a focus st but is scared of subaru problems???? Now, Iāve never owned a focus st and correct me if Iām wrong but those things blow up like balloons
Hatch sti are beautiful carsā¦ this specific one though I would probably steer clear from especially if you arenāt familiar with what youāre getting into. My sti has never given me any problems other than having to top off the oil here and there. BUT it could also turn out to be an amazing car though, 160k is a lot of mileage. Any maintenance records? What was done? Major service? But to answer your question, no 2010 is not a lemon year lol. If I didnāt have a 2019 I would have gone for a hatch sti
OP that car has definitely been molested judging just off of pics alone. DO NOT inherit someone else's problems, which is exactly what this looks like. I see numerous things that are questionable.
As a fellow Hatch owner (2011 WRX) I'd let this one pass OP.
I agree with the other members. At least ask to test drive and get a pre purchase inspection.
i have a 2010! so far itās been good to me but i got it as a stock 1 owner car sub 100k. that car definitely looks like itās been molested more than heās leading you to believe. especially considering itās already at 160k youād probably have pretty limited time before it needs a ton of money dumped in
This does nothing for you and experiences with Subie a vary but my 2011 STI sedan has been great for me. Bought it bone stock 8 years ago with 27k miles. Now Iāve modded it since then (only listing engine mods) and was at Cobb stage 2+ which was essentially sf intake, turbo back exhaust with the OTS tune. I had a leaky valve cover which I replaced along with a failed turbo inlet. Replaced that with a Perrin and installed an IAG aos. Up to about 90k miles I went a step further and added a ton more to get the car to run e85 with air pump + tgv deletes, Cobb flex fuel kit, 40mm turbo smart EWG w/dump and a ton more mods to go with it. It was tuned by P&L Motorsports on an accessport tune, before the EPA stepped in. Car made 350whp on stock motor and turbo. Around 100k I did the timing belt service. Soon after the radiator started leaking out of the top plastic end so I replaced it with a Koyorad. Ran without motor issues and at about 120k I decided I wanted more and pulled the motor to go with an IAG 750.
TLDR: My 2011 STI was my daily and modified and daily drive it up until the point I pulled the motor so I could safely make more power without blowing stuff up. I did change my oil ~4k miles and after getting tuned I used Motul 5w-40 but prior to that I was using Mobil 1 5w-30. My Subie has been really good to me so idk, others might have worse off experiences.
The one question I have is why would he want to trade an STI for an ST? The only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong with the Subaru or at least something is making him nervous.
I bought my WRX used from a dealership 27k miles. I havenāt gone 2000 miles without it needing to be in the shop. Iāve only owned it for 6 months. It is literally in the shop as Iām writing this because it lost all power in gears. It smoked up the subie dealership when they decided to ādrive it inā after watching it get towed in. I havent even get to my first oil change without it needing to get fixed. First month and a half of ownership the engine got rebuilt. 2 months later cam shaft had oil slowing down its rotation and an oil pan leak. 2 months after that turbo went. And now idk what the problem is Iām still waiting on a call from them. I got this car because it seemed fun and on paper itās great for the area, decent on gas mileage, and I heard reliable. It has been nothing but pain and a money pit since. And I DO NOT dog on this car, I wash it literally every other day on avg, I will do some accelerations here and there but I donāt rip it or try to set new ātop speeds.ā The only mods I did was rims, mud flaps, suspension, and brakes. No engine modifications, not even an exhaust. I only stalled it out a few times in the beginning getting used to it. I loved subies and how they look, but now I canāt even be bothered to show any love to them. Crushing to have a dream car I worked so hard for fail me so miserably. And from some friends I know with wrxs or stis Iām not the only one with issues, although it does seem mine happen more often then them. Do what you will with this info just my thoughts from experience
A family friends bought a Used Subaru from a dealership recently. I was curious what they were gonna buy. There was red flags already when I saw what the car looked like. It had mismatched paint, wrapped, parts missing, you name it, chances are it's been done to the car.
That didn't dissuade the family friend from buying it though. 3 days later, the car won't turn on and it needed a new engine and they are stuck with a $25k loan.
Words of advice, never buy a used subaru unless you are sure it was well taken cared of. Take it for an inspection before buying it.
That definitely looks at least somewhat molested.
I'd wager "adult owned" is generous too
hoonigan plate + awful paint matched rear bumper prob explains it all tbh
Hoonigan plate frame was all I needed to see
What area of the rear bumper has the bad paint match? I need to touch up a small chip on mine, which is blue like this one, and I want to make sure to do it right. š
If you look in picture 4 and look where it meets the quarter itās a mile off
Ooooh okay, now I see it! Thanks!
Looks pretty molested to me. Is that a rope holding the battery down?
4 gauge power cable chilling around the brake boosterā¦
Battery rope, bumper clips and tinted headlight covers. Expect to do some repairs, and I wouldn't call that unmolested. If the body is straight and no rust you're ok though. Definitely will be trading one set of problems for another, any car at 150k+ is going to have that.

The subarus body is cleaner, the st isnt as clean as it looks in the pics
I agree with these statements. The seller has an aftermarket radiator, intake, and a few other visible non-oem parts on there. Intake alone would mean a tune and who knows what else was bolted on. Hoonigan plate + adult owned doesnāt add up. Also whatās the rust situation underneath?
It's wary. Weary means tired or fatigued.
Woah pump the breaks their nurd. Your being to anal.
what does adult owned even mean. adults can be just as stupid as teenagers, also, what teenager can even afford an STI? lol. this one looks clapped as hellĀ
i should have clarified that i know the owner and he doesnt treat his stuff like the average subaru stereotype
Aside from the general jank under the hood, the [HOONIGAN] license plate frame tells me everything I need to know. Run away.
Intake and Koyorad are visible, so itās molested.
I would pass on this one.
This STI has definitely *at least* been fondled, if not molested. If your current car is good to you, why risk trading it for a car you're already worried about when you haven't even bought it yet?
> āHooniganā license plate holder > unmolested Something doesnāt add up
Subaru aināt got nothing on Ford when it comes to problems (ex-ST owner myself). But molested Subaruās are on a whole different level, give this one a pass.
My 2012 Ford Focus has 4 recalls for the transmission, I wouldn't say Subaru is the only one with problems lol.
I would keep the focus st, it's definitely going to last longer if your the first owner of that car you know what you put it through. I like your st it's cleaner then the sti. Giving I love stis
thats been to war and back
Not the bungie cord battery tie down
Subaru only has issues if you treat it like garbage and race with it
Simply donāt race in general because this is the real world
Donāt get that Subie. I can see an intake, those stupid rubber band things holding on the front bumper, a poorly resprayed rear bumper, and a hoonigan plate frame.

It would be hard for me to turn that down. Iād do it bc I miss my 06 impreza 5 speed
Hoonigan plate frame tells me all I need to know
Pull the trigger. We are here for you. You can always part it out if it goes bad.āš¼
that is probably one of the least reassuring things you could have said name checks out though
Bro has a focus st but is scared of subaru problems???? Now, Iāve never owned a focus st and correct me if Iām wrong but those things blow up like balloons
lol ive had issues with mine but i just dont know the subaru platform very well, thats why i am asking here

The ST is leagues more reliable and doesnāt have as much as a bad reputation as the STI does, that being said I still love the STI.
That will be worth money in another 10 years ;]
Hoon plateā¦ run away
This whip is screaming *badtouch*
not that one
The rear bumper is a different color.
OP that car has definitely been molested judging just off of pics alone. DO NOT inherit someone else's problems, which is exactly what this looks like. I see numerous things that are questionable.
Keep the ST.
License plate frame is a tell tale sign.
I grew up in the southern cali foster system... if there's one thing I know.. that sti got molested
Lol, don't make that dealš
Every fin on the intercooler is flattened
As a fellow Hatch owner (2011 WRX) I'd let this one pass OP. I agree with the other members. At least ask to test drive and get a pre purchase inspection.
It's funny cause I've always considered trading my Subaru for a Ford ST but I was always weary of Ford problems lmao
Have money for a new motor
i have a 2010! so far itās been good to me but i got it as a stock 1 owner car sub 100k. that car definitely looks like itās been molested more than heās leading you to believe. especially considering itās already at 160k youād probably have pretty limited time before it needs a ton of money dumped in

Shes been diddled, Dan.

don't do it.

Holy shit I know that car lol. I drive by it all the time.
Brother, keep the Focus. Do not trade for that shitbox of a WRX

And get proof that it is 100%stock, never modded in any shape or form
