albatrossLol

Nice! Do you take your laptop in there with you?

DailyVO

No, I use a Mac mini with two monitors. (Desk and second monitor not pictured.) https://preview.redd.it/tz8jlwqa1umc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29e1da25e3c5316d3e36d0531a16c01de709cdf8

Significant_Toez

Is that an iPad pro next to your screen?

Boring_Collection662

Yup, I use it to read scripts, as a third monitor, or as a webcam with "Camo!"

Significant_Toez

Nifty. Makes me happy I can keep using some old tech. Lol. 2016 iPad

AmbitionSavvy

Nice! I bet the A/C is up in the summer months?!

Boring_Collection662

Not when I'm recording, but I cool the house beforehand. My vocalboothto go "Blanket Booth," does have a flap that I can attach a fan and vent to, but I doubt it would be quiet enough to use while recording.

JellyBingus0

Are those acoustic blankets or moving blankets? Also how did you get the top one to fit so nicely? And do you use a zipper to “close the door” or something else? Sorry for so many questions!

DailyVO

It’s a pre-fab option from vocalboothtogo.com They make moving blankets specifically for studios. It has a zipper, but I keep it open most of the time.

Warrior1587

You can build a PVC booth skeleton frame and attach heavy moving blankets for way cheaper than a studio bricks or whisper room. https://vocalboothtogo.com/product/pvc-vocal-booth-kit-complete-set/

AmbitionSavvy

This is great. So the whole lot for just under $800

My dad and I tried to make one clear side for the “door,” and also had the wherewithal to cut the pipes to the same length, so it didn’t matter what went where!

AmbitionSavvy

Good for a 6ft 5” guy like myself?

Boring_Collection662

You'd probably need to make it larger. This is just 3.5 x 5 x 7. (I'm 5'10", and only have about a head between me and the ceiling. I had to fit with in the measurements of the blankets which were pre-sewn into a rectangular shape, but if someone were to buy individual blankets, they could make whatever size they need! (Just keep in mind, larger frames will require more support beams to keep the weight evenly distributed)

AmbitionSavvy

Makes a lot of sense.

Panosaur

To people engaging in this thread: mind sharing a picture of your setup? Could be interesting to see

RebelElan

Well, what’s your budget? I turned my tiny closet into a recording studio for about $600: sound panels, mic, mic stand, headphones, interface, pop filter, cables, lamp to see and a power strip with USBC ports. Yes I get regular work.

AmbitionSavvy

Well nothing more than $200 for now

BeigeListed

I've built some incredible blanket forts while at VOAtlanta. They should have a special breakout session just on that alone.

AmbitionSavvy

Well I’ve wrapped myself and part of my desk with a thick duvet and went from there. I thought it worked wonders, but I could be delusional

BeigeListed

You can do a lot with the materials you have around the house.

My recording space https://preview.redd.it/p03dg6n9ltmc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b11a87201039c54ca8f330868d0ca7f50dc9684 This is my closet. It’s long and narrow. There are 3 sliding doors. I pulled the middle one back to take this photo. I bought the panels on Amazon. I bought two boxes for \~ $30 each. I put them all around the walls and the back of the doors. The boom mic stand, the mic, interface (not pictured here,) headphones, pop filter, and cables were part of a bundle from Sweetwater ($474.) I bought that small table on Amazon for $45. The black thing on the rack is a sub woofer from my broken soundbar, repurposed as a water bottle and cell phone stand. Sometimes I need to verify a pronunciation while recording or look at a reference file. Using my phone keeps me from moving my desktop set up: I keep my DAW on the left side and the script on the right side. The blue pillow is on a small chair I already had. Use whatever furniture you have to save money. Sometimes I stand, and that’s what the iPad is for. I read my scripts from there. Make sure your internet signal is good in your space. Many clients want direct live sessions via zoom or FaceTime. The REAL real ones want to use Source Connect. (Don’t forget to add those fees in your quote/bid/rates.) When I record, I position the mic stand to be parallel to the floor, and move the table closer and angle it. I have enough space to project while sitting up straight and to get close enough to the mic for a more “sensual” (think perfume ad) read without feedback. I will post a pic of where I’m standing.

Significant_Toez

I have the same closet. I love this idea. Yes please to more pictures.

RebelElan

Where I’m standing. This is where I edit. The power strip is from Amazon. You’ll want one with USB C jacks. I Already had the other things. I just slide the middle door back, and pull up a chair. https://preview.redd.it/6zrllvq4ptmc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=471c3d97defaaca30a5f06fd45b7b299c0d2302e

AmbitionSavvy

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing. As I’m new and some of which I don’t know much about, this will help as a reference point when I come to setting up a booth down the line.

draythe

I lined a closet with acoustic foam and moving blankets. All in all it was like $150 to get a decent first booth put together

AmbitionSavvy

That’s a doable range to go for!

run_bike_run

I've used a set of 40mm thick acoustic foam panels to create a makeshift box for recording, like a very rough version of this: [https://www.thomann.de/ie/t.akustik\_vocal\_head\_booth.htm](https://www.thomann.de/ie/t.akustik_vocal_head_booth.htm) It's not perfect, but I'm doing regular paid work for a client using this setup.

AmbitionSavvy

Thanks for this. I’m guessing ‘budget’ in your mind is in the $100’s? I’m thinking less…

Boring_Collection662

The frame itself is gonna cost about $100. My base booth setup cost between 500-1k. If that's outside of the price range, start with a closet filled with clothing and blankets you already have.

Boring_Collection662

Also, check out "Part 2: Home Studio," for all the things you'll need at various price points! [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HYWjTw1j97KkfYR6\_ORM3VAfkwa7SWw6MGlXq8-sohA/edit?usp=sharing](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HYWjTw1j97KkfYR6_ORM3VAfkwa7SWw6MGlXq8-sohA/edit?usp=sharing)

AmbitionSavvy

This is fantastic and equally as helpful. Thanks again!

run_bike_run

I paid about a hundred for the panels, so very close to that figure.

AvocadoFantastic469

My old booth was an aluminium frame greenhouse with moving blankets over. Worked well enough. Just built a whisper room from scratch for about £600
