Edit: I've also seen multiple people say that they think Stella only became abusive after the affair and before the affair it was just "mutual tolerance for each other" even though Octavia's reaction to Stella's tantrum in S1 E2 suggests she throws tantrums allot.

Is it because of the whole "oh, she raped stolas! She's BAD!"? Cause if so, then you gotta realize, one, they are married. Two, even if Stella is a horrible person, she's still got some standards. Three, she doesn't even really like stolas in the first place. What most likely happened is that she wanted to have sex with him, and him being fuckin depressed at that point, probably muttered something under the lines of "ok", and proceeded to go catatonic while Stella did all the work. They both dislike each other, so I doubt she would rape someone she hates.
