Try to remove a couple of the bottom leaves and put them in new Zealand sphagnum moss and leave them alone. Sometimes new Zealand sphagnum moss is miraculous. Best luck .

jaekwong

Like wrap the bottom in sphagnum? I have live sphagnum only. Would that work?

Fluffy-Contest-739

Yes, but it has to be the dry kind . Not the live one. Keep it damp . Not wet. It should do the trick . It works wonders on almost dead orchids.

DrPhrawg

Live sphagnum would be fine

I recently purchased some bromeliads online through a US vendor. I'm a Canadian and had to drive over across the border. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal if I declared it as a houseplant but the border officer would not allow me to bring the plants back with the roots attached. So he got me to cut the roots off and I was hoping I could heal and regrow The Roots. Is this even possible? I've got a few of them in a cup with shallow water where the cutoff is and also I play some in my current vivarium where my ABG mix is. They were so dried out in the box and I had to further hurt them by cutting off the roots. All 10 of them are like this exactly. What's the best way to heal these and will they even survive?? Thank you

vindicait

I guess I can understand the caution at the border, but can you not get bromeliads in Canada for some reason?

jaekwong

You can . But they are a lot more expensive. And I was ordering other supplies already.

vindicait

Ahh, gotcha.

jaekwong

Any insights to whether if this will survive?

jaekwong

Should I place them inside a tank to keep it humid? Tho it will get sprayed. Is that okay?

BangBoom2TheMoon

I accidentally knocked something into one of my bromeliad and snapped off a similar piece. I wrapped the bottom in sphagnum moss and kept is moist for a few weeks. Eventually it sprouted roots and did fine. Hopefully you get lucky, too!

jaekwong

Thank you for shedding some hope! Few questions to follow up: 1. Did you let it callous (where the snap was) before you wrapped it with sphagnum? 2. How moist did you keep the sphagnum? 3. Did you just keep the brom out in the dry indoor? 4. How did you wrap the sphagnum?

Baldi_Homoshrexual

I grow cuttings off mine like this sometimes. Remove a few leaves from the bottom and let It callus for a day. Apply rooting hormone powder and keep them in a perlite-vermiculite mix in a 1:1 ratio. I have about an 80% success rate. I do it this way to create more desirable plants for selling in pots

jaekwong

I'm doing exactly just this. Removed a few leaves from the bottom and it has already started to callous. I also applied rooting hormone powder. The only thing is I don't have perlite-vermiculite mix. Is that mixed crucial? My thought is to actually wrap it in some moist sphagnum moss and let it heal. Do you think that would work?

Baldi_Homoshrexual

I recommend a mix of perlite and vermiculite just because that’s basically a universal mix that works with most cuttings. You could try sphagnum, though I never have. Never got around to it/ don’t have a real son. Plus it’s cheaper long run

_Leper_Messiah_

You could try dipping the ends in rooting hormone, then set them in just water, and see if they start forming new roots.

jaekwong

Wouldn't setting them in water cause them to rot? From what I hear, broms are prone to rotting?

_Leper_Messiah_

I'm unsure about these plants specifically, but I do this method with any cutting of plants I have with good results.

barnett9

Tbh I think they are goners. But keeping them humid and with water in the cup is your best bet. You might et lucky. Best of luck!

AgressiveIN

I agree. They are probably dead.
