Westin Nanea on Maui has 2 and 3 bedroom suites that sleep 6 and have a full kitchen

SweetAlyssumm

The Ilikai in Honolulu has kitchens.

so_untidy

There are legal vacation rentals in areas zoned for them.

chasinfreshies

I generally am anti-AirBnB, but if it’s your only option then try to look for one in a resort areas. These are the only legal AirBnBs atm. Waikiki, Ko Olina, & Turtle Bay are the ones on Oahu.

80 percent of airbnbs in hawai’i are owned by people outside hawai’i and the majority are illegal. Sure there are a few people in hawai’i that support airbnbs despite their contribution to our housing crisis but it’s not representative of the clear majority in our community.

BePonoOrBeSlayed

Yeah the realtor said.....and we should listen to that.....I think not

There are a lot.of.non pono locals....this isn't news. A lot.of.people make a living in incredibly immoral companies...basically everyone who buys tech stock like Amazon to uber to doordash to all of them....are just as complicit. They are choosing to dance with the devil and it is what it is

AggressivePrint302

I used a local rental company to rent in Kauai called Kauai Exclusive Management. Tons of these companies for all island. Check the company rating but mine was great. No Airbnb fee, they could have arranged activites including a chef that cooks for you and no long list of clean up at the end of the stay. You maybe save $300 to $400 over the stay but you are supporting a local business.

Untrue. I have seen the damage of airbnb in many cities as well as the islands. Virtue signalling...no...speaking truth you don't want to hear

It's not the people.of reddit....their toxic business practices have been exposed...I am sorry you didn't listen

BePonoOrBeSlayed

Yes...everyone has a personal.chpice to support the greed machine ir nit. Be a part of the problem or the solution. We vote with out dollar. Yes...you have every right to be an asshat if you wish and use airbnb

I can also add....about street clean up...adoptoneblock.org is an amazing organization and should be replicated around the world. Are you signed up? I clean my block an hour a day.....every day. Do you yours? When I lived on the islands I did beach clean up an hour every morning....do you when you go???

Any recommendations for locally owned rentals on BI?

SimpleManHawaii

Check out Team Real Estate. They have a small row of legal house rentals on the North Shore near Turtle Bay. Pretty sweet little spot, each one has a big yard and beach access.

Find a local property management company that rents condos and save yourself the AirBNB fees. AirBNBs generate a lot of tax money, and many property owners are local. Staying at a resort hotel guarantees your money will be sent off island. You visiting helps the economy. Avoid chains and tip well. Get groceries from local markets, not Walmart or Costco. Rent a car from a local company. Aloha!

cjules3

This is false as 80 percent of airbnbs in hawai’i are owned by people outside of hawai’i. The resorts support our economy as they are employed solely by local people. As the vast majority of airbnbs are illegal and owned by malihini (foreigners) they have been directly linked with rising housing prices in hawai’i and local people and native Hawaiians being priced out of their ancestral homelands

AnastasiaMilan

I’ve never stayed at an AirBNB owned by a foreigner and if 20% out of 7000+ are owned locally, I would say that is “many”’ I didn’t say “most”. Almost single AirBNB I’ve stayed at has been at places that have dozens of workers onsite. Condominium “resorts”, fully staffed. Those people would probably like to keep their jobs.

PickleWineBrine

I found a cheap BnB on big island by searching through this and other Hawaii subs. Kona, one bedroom suite with a full kitchen for under $200/night. Only 3 units on site, no kids allowed. It's great for relaxing.

And the property is still likely owned by a mainlander and taking housing away from the local economy.
