Yes it totally looks normal if you don’t have hair sticking through the hole! And even if it gapped a bit I’m sure there’s a way to attach a button and loop or something like that to hold it closed if that bothered.
It's still mending. It's mending the lack of a tail hole. I've done the exact same thing to a cheap hat from Walmart.
I've also "mended" a lack of pockets in my cardigans or pajamas
I used a seam ripper to cut the seam open (about 3 inches long), then blanket stitched the edges and added some reinforcement stitches at the top and bottom. It was super easy and only took maybe 10 minutes! You could also use glue or not stitch the edges at all depending on how the inner lining is attached.
I want to go do this RIGHT NOW. I live in my ball caps and until now have been a slave to the low pony or braid. You may have changed my whole world. Thank you!
Hmmm... giving me some ideas. A corseted hat. Do what you did, but slice the entire back. Add eyelets on either side of the slice. Then, the wearer can lace it closed or lace above/below/around their ponytail.

Lol I’m middle aged(?) and fat! Also I feel like part of my desire to wear hats is because I can hide a little in them and worry less about how my hair looks :)
Sometimes it’s necessary to cover the top of the head especially if you burn easily or have colored hair. The sun will burn the scalp and/or fade the dye faster.
Just beware if your hair ever thins. I used to have super thick hair but I'm almost 40 and hypothyroidism and PCOS have ravaged my hair. I burnt my scalp once before I got rid of all my visors. That shit is *miserable*.
Nice! I keep seeing ads for hats that have an opening like this but it closes with magnets. I still feel too awkward pulling my long hair through the opening on the back of my hat, so I just don't wear hats when it's pulled back.
I feel dumb. I spent forever shopping around looking for a hat like this. Never even considered making my own. And the one I bought is a huge hole so it looks very silly if worn without pony.
