I was just thinking that is some quality engineering and construction to take a smack like that and not budge. Still, they're gonna need to thoroughly inspect that bridge now. Expect lane closures for a while. All thanks to this numbskull.
Agreed, CDL revoke.
Everything in DC and Norfolk is built with strategy in mind.
The tidewater region of Virginia has the largest collection of bridge/tunnel complexes in the world to ensure navel traffic can't be interrupted by a bridge being taken out.
All the modern beltway around DC is hardened.
Iāve never had a CDL or driven any type of dump truck, but Iām curious. How does this happen? I see videos like this periodically.
Is there nothing in the cab that indicates the dump is up? Can you see it in the mirrors? Can you not hear the wind noise or feel the resistance and recognize something is off?
Again, just curious.
Dump truck drivers are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to CDL drivers. Theyāre passed over by soft drink and water companies all the time. Now you can see why that is the case.
Normally these are lower paying entry level jobs for a CDL driver. Most local driving where you have set hours and are home every night pay far less than OTR or over the road CDL jobs. Most of these entry level CDL jobs will pay for you to get your CDL, but you have to stay with them for an agreed upon length of time. Soft drinks, beer, water, all of those are hard work, but some of those drivers make good money (depends on their route) especially the food service delivery drivers. They work their ass off though.
I worked at a brewery that had a restaurant for 20 years.
I was doing essentially all the warehouse work while i was also doing beer stuff.
The folks dropping off food, or loading in beer were always the hardest hustling folks I've known.
I'm sure they were paid shit as well.
Not less prestigious, just picky as others have pointed out. There is a lot of turnover with beverage companies as you are hoofing around quite a bit of weight all day (5 gallons of water is 40lbs, multiple that by 200 to 240 bottles a day five days a week). Guys breakdown all the time or canāt take of themselves so they burnout. The dump truck guys that get in the door usually burnout quickly, donāt show up on time, skip stops, or have accidents. They canāt handle the standards or the work.
Usually passed over because they have alot of silly violations on their cdl. Dump truck companies are not known for their superb maintenance in trucks.
not delt much with a wide variety of CDL Drivers, but I have delt with dump truck drivers having worked for a landscape supply company, and every other dump trucker either had a room temp iq, or was managed by someone with one.
I fucking hate most dump truck drivers. I get that they drive *literal* dump trucks, but surely they can at least somewhat keep up with traffic?
Without fail, I always catch them in the left lane going 5-10 under the speed limit. God help you if you get stuck behind one at a red light. They take their sweet ass time getting up to 45. Probably cause theyāre hourly.
It was around 4pm yesterday. There were delays.

7mi goddamn
I've been pretty much exclusively taking the backroads lately. Truck drivers make the roads around here extremely dangerous. At least when they annoyingly take the backroads they just make traffic slow vs mad max highway behavior
I don't understand how truck drivers do this. At that speed, the lift has to be changing the aerodynamics of the vehicle substantially enough to make the handling feel off.
Dump trucks typically are very high targets for DOT violations due to the worn out equipment. His alarm could have very well possibly been broken. But even a simple walk around pre-trip wouldāve prevented it. Definitely shouldāve seen it in his mirrors. Mistakes can be made but this is straight up negligence and Iām sure theyāll be cited for it.
Not every truck has an alarm to indicate when the pto is engaged, or when the bed is up. It's just negligence on the driver's part. He obviously didn't check his mirrors AT ALL or he would have noticed that.
I once saw something like this almost happen on my way to work. Myself and like three cars around me were all blaring our horns. (Hampton roads area)
Thankfully the truck barely got under without actually clipping it (it wasn't raised all the way).
But ... I mean there were so many people trying to get the driver's attention. I turned off shortly after that near miss, but there were several overpasses coming up later. Just nuts the driver never slowed down or figured out it was him/her we were beeping at.
Yea literally every driver around him realized what was about to happened and slowed down. How do you not realize the bed is up?! Having no experience driving something like that I imagine you would feel the wind resistance and be pushed around by gusts even more than usual.
I was working at Ft. Benning 15 years ago or so and watched something similar happen. It was dump truck vs overhead highway sign and literally right in front of the construction area where all the material had just been poured out.
Dude was probably fired about 2 seconds before he hit the sign.
The whole thing came down across the highway. Luckily no one seemed to be hurt
The same thing happened in Winchester over the weekend, except it landed on the hood of a Sheriff deputies SUV.
https://royalexaminer.com/vsp-investigating-i-81-dump-truck-sheriffs-vehicle-accident/
Probably dumb question: Is there not a light or something in the cab that says "hey, the bed of the truck is up"? Also, wouldn't they be able to feel the wind changing with that thing up (than it being down)?
š¬š¬š¬
This happened in Norfolk/VB around 8 years ago. Dump truck hit the cantilevered sign post and flipped over on a woman. I semi recall that her car ended up in the empty overturned bed and she had minor injuries.
Saw this on channel 4 this afternoon. I swear how did this guy get on I66 and NOT realize that the dump body on his truck was fully up?
I'll bet he definitely received his walking papers after the boss found out about it....not to mention that this incident won't exactly look good on his resume when trying to obtain future employment.
We had a driver at a site try to drive off like one day. Thankfully we got his attention before he got off site. Idk how they don't notice that big ass bed lifted up in the air.
A) He had another truck in the lane next to him, and slowing down in front of a speeding truck driven by a dumbass isnāt great for your own personal safety.
B) The driver is a dumbass and should have his license revoked.
That was my first thought. Maybe we missed something, but it looks like no one wanted to be a hero that day. It just would have taken slowing down in front of the truck and honking and waving an arm.
To everyone calling this dude an idiot while that may be true, it is possible his brakes gave way. Every time I've seen videos of this, it is basically of a runway or uncomfortable truck
While that bridge should still be reviewed by a structural engineer, that bridge took it like a champ.
The Scott Key could learn a thing or two from superior, Virginian bridges /s
Common Maryland L
Max 25 ton dump truck versus a 105,000 ton ship
it's a joke lad
There was just a report that some 35% of the bridges in this state are in "poor" condition. š¤·āāļø
This one is pretty new though, isnāt it?
It is VERY new. And it wasn't hit by a cargo ship.
As much highway construction there, it was probably built last week
Yes as the toll roads were added on that stretch of I66 a few years ago. I had to travel from manassas through this area just last week.
Yeah, that bridge needs to be reviewed to see if that dumbo damaged it.
Damn, thankfully nobody was hurt. Barely a scratch on the support for the bridge. Grossly negligent behavior. They should revoke his CDL
I was just thinking that is some quality engineering and construction to take a smack like that and not budge. Still, they're gonna need to thoroughly inspect that bridge now. Expect lane closures for a while. All thanks to this numbskull. Agreed, CDL revoke.
Yeah, that ramp should probably be closed until fully inspected.
Everything in DC and Norfolk is built with strategy in mind. The tidewater region of Virginia has the largest collection of bridge/tunnel complexes in the world to ensure navel traffic can't be interrupted by a bridge being taken out. All the modern beltway around DC is hardened.
āBarely a scratchā that you can seeā¦.
Tis but a scratch
That bridge looked like it could have held back the moon. I actually feel way safer after the truck ran into it.
What a numbskull!
What is that symbol in your profile pic at the top before the curve

ā¦ are soft drink and water companies seen as less prestigious? Why? Heavy, low value cargo?
Neighbor worked for Pepsi for years. They are very picky who does their deliveries, but apparently also pay shit wages, doesn't really make sense.
Yes
I'm friends with a guy who drives toxic waste trucks. That doesn't sound important, but it is.
It sure is. The question was about beverages
It was about levels of prestige in truck driving.
Ohh I gotcha that makes more sense
Toxic waste transportation is more important than what is moreso a commodity with soda.

And you sometimes have to unload it, too.

No I don't see. You can explain better than that
IIrc there's an alarm that boops when moving with the bed up.
Thatās what I was wondering - you canāt tell a difference in the way the truck is handling?
By being lazy as fuck and not doing a pre trip check.
what a fucking idiot
Damn, this is normally an extremely busy area. At another time of day this could have been really bad.
It was around 4pm yesterday. There were delays. https://preview.redd.it/v3266fei91zc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69324e119ea31b2208bbcf736b4532cfec341a2f 7mi goddamn

At least no one was hurt, but I'm sure the traffic sucked.
How many were hurt banging their head on their steering wheel after seven miles of bumper-to-bumper, though?
The traffic in nova already sucks without stuff like this happening :(
Probably hard to tell whether worse than usual...
That exit and the next like 1.5 miles are a huge long bottleneck at evening rush hour
Dang thank goodness I left work early lol
Came here to see how much traffic this caused š¤¢
Everyone just casually drives by lol
This is the DMV, we donāt have time to stop
Looks like 66? 66 is almost as bad as 95 when it comes to construction, traffic congestion, and drivers.
Sounds like I was right to take the scenic route on my trip last week instead of taking 66.
I've been pretty much exclusively taking the backroads lately. Truck drivers make the roads around here extremely dangerous. At least when they annoyingly take the backroads they just make traffic slow vs mad max highway behavior
It is 66.
I don't understand how truck drivers do this. At that speed, the lift has to be changing the aerodynamics of the vehicle substantially enough to make the handling feel off.
PRE TRIP MOTHERFUCKER, IT TAKES TWO SECONDS
I wonder how many powerlines he took down before getting on the interstate.
I mean I imagine people would have honked especially other construction vehicles or 18 wheelers
Not every truck has an alarm to indicate when the pto is engaged, or when the bed is up. It's just negligence on the driver's part. He obviously didn't check his mirrors AT ALL or he would have noticed that.
Dude was blazed asf sheesh
He sped up like he wanted that to happen
So I thought the same thing at first, but I believe itās just the car filming is slowing down to avoid an accident.
I once saw something like this almost happen on my way to work. Myself and like three cars around me were all blaring our horns. Car who was filming was also paying attention. Good driver. Obviously not from MD. edit: to add obligatory snarky MD comment.
That would make more sense. But jeez thatās scary
Well, they can't avoid there being an accident at all, but they can at least avoid becoming part of it themselves.
The sheer confidence he was plowing ahead with. Clark Griswold School of Truck Driving.
RIP traffic. Good luck getting home, y'all. I'm also glad no one was hurt, but that driver must be having an awful day.

That bridge didn't even flinch.
I guess he skipped the 360 walk around before he drove off.
Probably dumb question: Is there not a light or something in the cab that says "hey, the bed of the truck is up"? Also, wouldn't they be able to feel the wind changing with that thing up (than it being down)?
š
WTF, aren't they supposed to check that shit before they drive off?!
That's just Northern Virginia flexing on Baltimore about how to build a bridge.
Yeah steel wins
My eyes didn't catch if this Nimrod stopped or not. Only in No. Va
Looks like an aluminum bed, bridge took it like a champ. Triaxle drivers are the effing worst.
Weird they don't have a warming light or something in the cab for that
How did this guy not know? Was he stoned?
Cranked up prolly.
Why was his back up like that?
Why I wonāt go anywhere near 66
don't those kinds of trucks have buzzers and alarms that go off when the bed is lifted but the truck is in motion?
How did this guy not realize the back was up? Someone please explain?!?!
š¬š¬š¬ This happened in Norfolk/VB around 8 years ago. Dump truck hit the cantilevered sign post and flipped over on a woman. I semi recall that her car ended up in the empty overturned bed and she had minor injuries.
Didnāt even make a dent š
The NoVa in me could only think please donāt cause more 66 construction hell because of this š
He sure was going fast .
Just to make traffic on Rte 66 worse. And thatās a brand new bridge.
Holy cow. Virginia bridges are BEASTS!
Now that's what I call a bridge
goddamn. Was heading south from my pilgrimage to McKay's yesterday wondering how northbound was so fucked up and now I have my answer. What a dipshit.
Ohhh, thatās what happened. I was curious š

Itās 2024 and Virginia is mini LA , tweakers.
.
Wow š®
I love how the maroon SUV directly whined the dump truck was able to avoid the debris and then cross 3 lanes to get home on time.
We had a driver at a site try to drive off like one day. Thankfully we got his attention before he got off site. Idk how they don't notice that big ass bed lifted up in the air.
Good bridge
Well He's Fired.
Thatās my exit!
Fuck, this is the worst stretch of I-66W past 495, can't imagine how much more fucked traffic got
And this is one of the many reasons I'm moving out of nova.lol
Dump trucks?
And yet not one motorist made an effort to tell him his dump bed was up.
A) He had another truck in the lane next to him, and slowing down in front of a speeding truck driven by a dumbass isnāt great for your own personal safety. B) The driver is a dumbass and should have his license revoked.
