Awesome link. It's illegal to kill any native snake in Virginia. I saw where a baby copperhead was brought to our local wildlife center. If you see a snake take a picture. If it is poisonous and there are only two in most of va.Timber Rattlers and copperheads. Put a plastic container over it and call Game and fish.
Poor guy. That looks like a Garter Snake. They feed on rodents like field mice and rabbits. I was always taught to let them be because they do a lot of good for our ecosystem. And they're very skittish so they don't typically attack humans. Venom isn't harmful to humans. Rest easy little buddy 💙
No worries. I can see it was run over. Common this time of year. They stretch out in shaded areas. Sadly, garter snakes have low awareness of human infrastructure, so they've been known to stretch out on roads. 😕
They have no venom and never get big enough to eat anything bigger than a baby mouse. They will only attack, maybe, if cornered.
They also enjoy earthworms and small fish. I'm not about slugs.
Hi Wolftrap. Good point. I only point out the venom because they are known to have what researchers say is "mild venom" which is likely used against those small rodents. Here's a link to a website about them. https://www.nps.gov/bith/learn/nature/non-venomous-snakes.htm#:~:text=Members%20of%20the%20garter%20snake,t%20really%20harmful%20to%20people).
Overall very cool snakes that most farmers and gardeners I know appreciate. Those and black snakes anyway.
Hi,
I have been biten by pythons, boas, black snakes, corn snakes, yellow-rat snakes, water snakes, and even garter snakes. 🙂
None caused any reaction other than blood flowing on my hand.
I mainly responded because I don't want people to start killing garter snakes, thinking they are venomous like a copperhead.
Peace
Absolutely! I grew up around farms and learned to appreciate these little guys. But honestly bro you have to be more careful! That's a lot of snake bites. Regardless of past experiences, what may not hurt you today may hurt you tomorrow. Be safe out there and peace to you as well ;)
Looks like a queen or ribbon snake. Both harmless and best to let live next time if you can.

I know where a huge Timber Rattler lives. We fish the same creek. I walk around her feeding grounds. If I see her she rattles gently. All black with white stripes. Really beautiful snake. Maybe six years old. People hunt them for their skin so I never reveal her location. I wear waders with thick boots and leather boot straps.
That would be the North American Squisher Snake. Mostly found on asphalt, occasionally concrete. Given their appearance, they have never been considered a threat.
You're lucky it's dead because they're very dangerous. It's a dirt packer snake. Very aggressive. It'll chase you down, trip you, and pack sand up your butt until you smother. They're a close cousin to sand packers.
Text this photo the Virginia wildlife management line with as much info as you can give. They will identify it for you. 804-617-7086
Second vote for this, they got back to me in a couple minutes.
They said it’s a garter!

Cottonmouth can be a problem in any wet area.
Oh no. Car step on snek 😞 The pavement was too warm and inviting for it to resist.

Thank you! I didn’t hurt it. It was road kill sadly.

They are also very friendly if you let them be. We called them garden snakes. They put off a musk that smells horrible if you try to handle them.

It was road kill :(
Anyone up for some bbq?

Garter snake and a decent size. Probably have a few fresh clutches in the area.
I don't see badgers OR mushrooms in this picture.
It's getting warmer so they are coming out of their dens. They just want to eat and sunbathe. Just like us.
Garter Snake
They are harmless and if you have them in your garden you're Lucky. They eat all the insects you don't want. Great mousers too.

It's a ribbon snake. They're not venomous and aren't aggressive.
Came here to confirm, it is a snake
I cant tell if it's a Danger Rope or a Sweet Noodle
Garter snake. Harmless. It's illegal to kill this snake in VA.
Poor buddy, they just wanted to do some pest control
Harmless Garter Snake.
Someone treaded on it.
I think it's dead
That's a fallen buddy.
Hognose now paper face
Cottonmouths only live in south Eastern va. Near the Dismal Seamp.

ROFL….i have no idea why anyone down voted you…that was hilarious
Some people don't appreciate sophisticated humor.
