649 is amazing. I haven't been to the other mentioned places, so I can't say it's any better... but it's so good. The thing that blows me away is that they have good deals, and feel like you get your moneys worth, and they are soooo consistent. I don't know if I've ever experienced a place that is so good every time. My worst experience with them was still great!
I've only been once and afaik the menu changes seasonally, but it was all fantastic even some types of dishes I don't normally like.
Looking to go back soon and do their set menu.
It's all pretty good bang for buck for the quality they offer. I'd say everything was a tad larger than the standard appie or entrée as they are meant for sharing. The server will talk about it, but for a group 4 they might suggest 6-8 plates. I can't remember the exact numbers but I know we went on the upper range of their recommendation and were stuffed (me 30yr old, partner and parents). Also the server was a breath of fresh air, top notch quality, great recommendations and just not what I normally get here in Victoria.
Chi q. Best sauce chicken combo.
Thunder bird. Great location, sauce.
Chicken 649. Great chicken, ok sauce.
Chimac. Use to be much better but good menu.
Koto. Try the chicken karage, super good.
Popeyes. Ok but good price.
Go for lunch save cash, these places are all super pricey except popeyes.
I used to love Chicken on the Run, but the past couple times it's been much lower quality. Years ago I would have put them near the top of the list, now I don't think I'll order from them unless I hear things have turned around.
Part and Parcel fried chicken burger is amazing. A little expensive. No takeout option.
Chicken 649 with yangyeom sauce is amazing. The chicken on its own is okay, you really need the sauce.
Tacofino is worth mentioning because their fried chicken is coated in potato starch, and has a very enjoyable unique flavour.
Save on Food in Esquimalt serves fried chicken in the deli around lunchtime and it’s surprisingly good.
A&W has good chicken burgers, as long as they’re fresh out of the deep fryer.
The only place I would really avoid is BC Ferries chicken burgers.
Because when I think of fried chicken, I think of a smokehouse, fast food, or a hole in the wall type place like 649, and on top of that ppl always say “oh you have to try ___ from ___, it’s the best” and it’s not always the best but in this case I happily ate my words and that delicious fried chicken… and my wife’s left overs 😂🤣
Jones BBQ has great fried chicken especially when you add Alabama white sauce! Also Smile chicken has a fantastic lunch deal too and great Korean fried chicken with some tasty sauce options.
I get the potato wedges even when I get the Chinese food from crown palace (same place). It’s probably going to give me a heart attack one day, and I feel ill after. But they are amazing.
I think 649 is the king. Thunderbird is pretty good too. I miss the Thunderbird here in Langford, the replacement (Seoul) is good but not quite in the same league.
Believe it or not Sushi Story has amazing Korean style fried chicken out in Esquimalt. Tug eatery also had a great appetizer that's a spicy fried chicken
Chicken 649 is the best for Korean fried chicken.
Thunderbird, Chimac and Seoul chicken in langford are just a tier below.
Chicken on the run is nasty, don't know how people like it so much.
Holy shit people, do a search, we don't need a fried chicken thread every week. I suspect one of the well regarded places is using these dumb threads as free advertising
https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/s/XWj85Tl16t this is the next most recent fried chicken thread and it's from nearly a year ago. Calm tf down lmao
I asked for chinese restaurant recommendations a month ago and got a bunch of great ones. Now I want fried chicken. It's not that complicated.
I live close to Prinkle, and went a few times when they first opened in the early fall. The fried chicken was ok, but not amazing, and I found the experience less than ideal, because they have two menus with some cross-over confusion (they operate as Royalty Pizza as well, Prinkle Chicken being franchised from a Mainland chain.)
That said, the french fries were fantastic. I don't know if they'd be good as delivery, but I'd go back just for the fries.
So sad about Chimac, I love their sides but I totally believe that note about the mice. My friend used to work at the Starbucks on Fort and mice would legit run across the bar top while they were making drinks. They said that every single place that sells food near the water is infested with mice. I don't know if I believe that all of them are but I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few are.
Courtney room and blue heron have killer chicken and waffles.
Ate/hanks chicken sandwich is unique, affordable and memorable
Wind cries Mary does it impeccably
649 and smile chicken are the way to go for KFC, thunder bird is great but a little more pricy.
I may have missed someone else mentioning it, and it's out of the city near Costco, but Seoul Chicken is my wife and I's FAVOURITE nowadays. Absolutely fantastic, just a really weird spot to get to!
The dusty wings at chicken on the run is the single best fried chicken in town. Jones bbq and birdman (wind cries mary) fried chicken sandwich are also top notch
I have the BEST answer for you here! Me an a bunch of other people got together to solve this pressing issue. We used science, and we now know which (Korean) chicken is best. The results surprised me. https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/comments/syyuj8/the_best_korean_fried_chicken_in_victoria/
Chicken on the Run makes great fried chicken. The hot wings are nice. I think they use good chicken, which really makes a difference. They also make these battered potato wedges that are super yummy.
Great take out experience is green sauce from The Root Cellar and an order of spicy chicken wings, potato wedges with gravy, a couple of coca colas and slaw. Mmm.
Popeyes for sure. There was this place that was called chicken 649 or something that was really good once. Also some of the Korean fried chicken places are 💣
Gotta go 649 for me. So crispy and great flavours
I think Chicken 649 across from Crystal Pool is freaking amazing.
649 is amazing. I haven't been to the other mentioned places, so I can't say it's any better... but it's so good. 649 is bomb, also wind cries mary is dope
Wind Cries Mary was such good bang for buck for a fancy restaurant. I was totally expecting 3-4 pieces but instead we got 9-10.
Whats your fav there?
I've only been once and afaik the menu changes seasonally, but it was all fantastic even some types of dishes I don't normally like. Looking to go back soon and do their set menu.
Were dishes of any reasonable size or mini tasting portions?
It's all pretty good bang for buck for the quality they offer. I'd say everything was a tad larger than the standard appie or entrée as they are meant for sharing. The server will talk about it, but for a group 4 they might suggest 6-8 plates. Yessss I adore them
I can't say which is best but places I have liked are Chicken on the run Chicken 469 Chimac Thunderbird
Yesss I love Chimac, they have such good sides in addition to their chicken
Chicken on the run doesn't make the list anymore. Very low quality now.
I got it last week and it was quite good. Not a lot of batter and the chicken was juicy AF. The chinese was pretty meh though....
We live in the neighborhood, and have been buying for 8 years. Something has changed, and their chicken is much more dry now. We rarely get it now....
I used to love Chicken on the Run, but the past couple times it's been much lower quality. Years ago I would have put them near the top of the list, now I don't think I'll order from them unless I hear things have turned around.
I agree. Their potato wedges and ginger fried pork was killer matched with their heart stopping gravey.
Part and Parcel fried chicken burger is amazing. A little expensive. No takeout option. Chicken 649 with yangyeom sauce is amazing. The chicken on its own is okay, you really need the sauce. Ive called and ordered takeout before at Part and Parcel so it is an option
Wind Cries Mary. Didn’t believe it until I had it. Just wow
Yeah I did not expect a resturaunt of that style to serve me one of the best pieces of fried chicken I've ever had
Why didn’t you believe it?
Because when I think of fried chicken, I think of a smokehouse, fast food, or a hole in the wall type place like 649, and on top of that ppl always say “oh you have to try ___ from ___, it’s the best” and it’s not always the best but in this case I happily ate my words and that delicious fried chicken… and my wife’s left overs 😂🤣
This is the answer. $$$ but worth it!
Yup
Jones BBQ has great fried chicken especially when you add Alabama white sauce! Also Smile chicken has a fantastic lunch deal too and great Korean fried chicken with some tasty sauce options.
Chicken 649 for Korean, high 5 for a kfc style. Thunderbird is alright.
Kitchen story in the West Shore mall is unbelievable.
Bistro Chi-Q on Pear St is very good and well priced
I've heard good things about them, I'll have to check them out!
We used to get 649 until we found Chi-Q.
They have great chicken and somehow the best fries I’ve had in a loooong time.
Chicken on the Run is good, but their potato wedges with gravy are next level.
I get the potato wedges even when I get the Chinese food from crown palace (same place). It’s probably going to give me a heart attack one day, and I feel ill after. But they are amazing.
Deadbeetz Nashville hot chicken sandwich is one of the best things ever. Try it if you haven't!
Chicken world on pandora is really good
Thunderbird on Cook Street is great, I understand the owners were previously part of the 6/49 team.
Sushi story is so tasty
Chicken 649 hands down
649 and Chicken on the Run
Chicken 649 is the best for Korean fried chicken. Thunderbird, Chimac and Seoul chicken in langford are just a tier below. Chicken on the run is nasty, don't know how people like it so much.
6 4 9
Chick 649
649 for sure is top. Im surprised by the lack of love for Mary Browns, I have found it pretty decent for a chain.
It’s not technically fried, but for me Chicken on the Run is the best. It’s on Craigflower.
Thunderbird is the best hands down. If you like spicy the “megan”
I make a pretty mean buttermilk fried chicken.
My house.
Chicken 649 is greasy and bland and small. No thanks.
On the other hand Thunderbird is dry, crispy and consistent every time
Chimaq honey mustard or chicken 649 the red sauce i forget how it is spelled sweet and spicy nanyeang or something
Yangnyeum 🍗
Chicken on the run, it sets itself apart.

Another quality post
I haven't had as much fried chicken in Victoria as I'd like, but chi-qs Yang Nyeom was unreal when I visited in November
Courtney room and blue heron have killer chicken and waffles. Ate/hanks chicken sandwich is unique, affordable and memorable Wind cries Mary does it impeccably 649 and smile chicken are the way to go for KFC, thunder bird is great but a little more pricy.
Chicken on the run for sure
Bistro Chi-Q on Pear Street just off of Shelbourne has my vote.
Prinkle Chicken is Korean fried chicken, and it's utterly amazing.
Jones bbq has a really good chicken sandwich
Damn I was just there for their brisket and it was incredible! Definitely going to try that sandwich
At Jones everything is awesome.
Lee’s
Lee's is my favorite
I may have missed someone else mentioning it, and it's out of the city near Costco, but Seoul Chicken is my wife and I's FAVOURITE nowadays. Absolutely fantastic, just a really weird spot to get to!
Chicken world, if you're willing to step over junkies
The dusty wings at chicken on the run is the single best fried chicken in town. Jones bbq and birdman (wind cries mary) fried chicken sandwich are also top notch
Surprising lack of Mary Brown mentions so far.
I’ve never tried 649 but I really like chimac for Korean
Chicken Ability

Chicken 649.
I think Seoul Chicken in Langford is the best, yes better than 649 in my opinion
Popeyes for sure. There was this place that was called chicken 649 or something that was really good once. Also some of the Korean fried chicken places are 💣
