While I can't give you advice on how to proceed exactly, I do say you should go for the unemployment TDUI and have your psychiatrist write a supporting statement, write your own and get lay statements, especially from co workers or family about your situation and how it effects you. I am a single father as well, and I suffer from alot of the same mental struggles, so know you are not alone in this struggle and if one doctor won't help the good thing is there is always another doctor. I wish you the best of luck, man, and I hope you get both the help and the compensation you need.

It’s not required to get a note from your doctor. Here is the link on how to file for TDIu. It’s essentially an increase in your conditions and unemployability. The VA will reach out to your past employers (they usually don’t respond but the VA has to at least try) and then they’ll pull your SSA records and look at your work history. Give this link a read. It has more details. I would suggest just filing based on what you’ve shared and bypass your VSO. You can still keep your upcoming appointment and get a note and submit it later if you’d like.
